Sophie Aldred @ Vworp 3

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 08:31 AM PDT

Former Doctor Who companion Sophie Aldred is among the guests at this weekend's Vworp 3 event, in which she'll be talking about her 6 favourite things about the show.

Former Doctor Who companion Sophie AldredSophie was first seen as Ace in 1987's Dragonfire, and replaced Bonnie Langford's Mel as the Seventh Doctor's companion. Ace quickly became a popular character, with Sophie and Sylvester McCoy forming a memorable Doctor-companion combination, possibly the strongest of the 1980s.

In more recent years Sophie has reprised her role as Ace for Big Finish, and on Sunday at the PubCon Vworp 3 event she'll be chatting with Charlie Ross about the six things she loves about Doctor Who.

For more information, visit www.thelass.co.uk and to purchase tickets to the event, click www.wegottickets.com.

We're profiling each of the guests throughout the week, and I'll be at the event myself as scientific technical adviser, streaming and live-tweeting this Sunday, July 18th!

Cobwebs Preview

Coming soon, from Big Finish…

Doctor Who from Big Finish - Cobwebs starring Peter Davison…is the hotly anticipated Cobwebs, which reunites the old Fifth Doctor TARDIS team of Nyssa, Turlough and mouth on legs, Tegan!

"You know what cobwebs mean. Spiders…"

In search of a cure for a sickness that's so far claimed six billion lives, scientist Nyssa arrives at an abandoned gene-tech facility on the toxic planet Helheim. 'Hellhole', more like.

Nyssa's not alone. The TARDIS has also been drawn to the Helheim base – and in its cobweb-coated corridors, she soon runs into the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough, her travelling companions of half a century past. But who, or what, has engineered this strange reunion? The Black Guardian, perhaps?

The answer's here, in the dark. With the Cractids. In the cobwebs.

Starring Peter Davison as the Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough, Cobwebs is by Jonathan Morris and available this month from BigFinish.com on CD or download.

“John, I’ll Have Your Baby”

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 05:48 AM PDT

John Barrowman, also known as everyone's favourite "Doctor With Weapons," Captain Jack Harkness, in Torchwood and Doctor Who, has revealed that he was offered a child by Drea de Matteo, who played Barrowman's ex-girlfriend during his short stint on Desperate Housewives.

Torchwood star John BarrowmanSaid Barrowman,

"Drea said we're like brother and sister, separated at birth, and that she'd have my kids.

"She's got this amazing New Jersey drawl: 'I usually don't like actors, but I like you. You want a kid? Come to me, I'll have a baby for ya.' Brilliant!"

Of course, the response to this quote ought to be: "Should a brother and sister really be having kids together?"

But Barrowman and his partner Scott Gil are not against the idea of starting a family. In a 2008 discussion, Barrowman commented,

"We're building a house in Cardiff on the beach. We're going to have six bedrooms in it and we feel like we've got a lot to offer."

By now the house will have been built, so the fact that they still have yet to start raising children likely boils down to the busy schedules of Barrowman and Gil (an architect).

Moff’s Christmas

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 10:38 PM PDT

It might only be July, but the thrill of Christmas is already bristling hairs on the back of our necks at Kasterborous Towers as we look forward to the next episode of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who boss Steven MoffatLike a small child using the first week of their summer holidays to write a Christmas list, we're thrilled by Steven Moffat's enthusiasm.

"Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. "

However we do fee sorry for the people in Steven's neighbourhood. I wonder if he's sent property prices down with this behaviour?

I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."

Meanwhile, Ben Stephenson is Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, and he's looking forward to seeing the Doctor and Amy return – although while he doesn't mention Rory (Arthur Darvill) we understand that he too will be aboard.

"Matt Smith and Karen Gillan captivated audiences in their debut series and Doctor Who's clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol will thrill BBC One viewers this year with special guest stars Sir Michael Gambon and singing sensation Katherine Jenkins joining Amy and the Doctor for an unforgettable present!"

All we need to know now is whether its on Christmas Day…

Time Lord Inspiration

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 08:49 PM PDT

What do Doctor Who fans want to be when they grow up? Its an interesting question; do genre TV programmes breed fans who all migrate to certain jobs? Do Star Trek fans become scientist and cognitive neuroscientists like Dr. Daniel J. Levitin because of the shows progressive and egalitarian message?

Peter Anghelides - the Doctor Who novelist behind audiobooks Pest Control and The Chaos Pool and novels Frontier Worlds and The Ancestor Cell (which was placed ninth in SFX Magazines Best SF/Fantasy novelisation or TV tie-in novel for 2000) – believes that Doctor Who fans are more interested in the mechanics of television, and tend to badger careers advisers with bold plans for becoming writers, directors and producers more than any other genre fans.

Anghelides, posting off-cuts from his recent interview with Sci Fi Now Magazine, said:

"Doctor Who was an early childhood enthusiasm, so it certainly featured in my writing then, or the games I acted out, or the films I made on Super 8. Followed by fan magazines. Followed by the chance to get published professionally."

It's these professional routes that allow fans to get a foot in the door and contribute to the multi-platform world of Who. Writers like Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts, Robert Shearman have all previously contributed to other Who mediums; Anghelides concurs:

"The media is more varied, so with audios you have to work with the expectation that families listening to it on the car CD player have it as a shared experience like watching the telly, and aren't going to skip back a few tracks to work out what happened, whereas with a novel it's a solitary experience that you can scan back over if you wish. You can see a greater variety of styles and tone – yet paradoxically all still "true" to the TV series."

And as these mediums mix, their importance grows even if the metaphorical axe falls again on the TV series – Anghelides comments;

"I can't see it ever stopping completely, in one form or another. It's the show that comes back. But I don't really stop to think about that. Why worry about it? Be in the moment. Enjoy it wholeheartedly for what it is while we've got it, right now. The glass isn't half empty. It isn't half-full either, it's spilling right over the edges."

To Cut a Blade of Grass

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 07:31 PM PDT

The Herald-Mail.com has run a short question and answer article with Science Fiction author Cindy Garland, who recently won a competition to have her Doctor Who short story To Cut a Blade of Grass appear on an anthology CD by Big Finish productions.

Big Finish, producers of Doctor Who audio dramasCindy revealed a little of what her story was about:

"I had to in a short story, build up to saving the universe. I thought, 'Maybe I can narrow it down and make it personal and intimate.' That's what I tried to do. The title is based on the ancient proverb, 'to cut a blade of grass is to shake the universe.'

"It means, you do one little thing and it has this ripple effect and touches people in a way you couldn't even imagine. The doctor in Dr. Who (sic) is a time lord that comes in and does one little thing and effects the whole universe."

As a fan of Big Finish and their colossal output of work, Mary was quite shocked to be one of the 22 authors picked from 500:

"I was overjoyed. When I got the e-mail from the editor, I was like 'you're kidding me.' To think that someone from the U.S. could write something for ("Doctor Who") and have one of the original actors read it, it's very humbling."

Cindy isn't the first female novelist to write for Doctor Who; Australian Kate Orman has also written several Doctor Who novels for the Virgin New Adventures and the BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures.

Moff’s Christmas Defence

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 05:30 PM PDT

The Guardian has reported that while the English public have been enjoying the first proper Summer weather for quite some years, Steven Moffat and his team have been busy with the first read-through of this year's as-yet-unnamed Doctor Who Christmas special.

Doctor Who writer Steven MoffatMoffat promises "the most Christmassy Christmas special" of the hit science fiction drama series since its return to our screens five years ago and it is revealed that it will feature Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins in her first acting role and also heavyweight actor Sir Michael Gambon.

Moffat apparently hopes to emulate the success of the 2009 Christmas special The End of Time, Part One, which peaked with 10 million viewers. 2007's Voyage of the Damned attracted ratings of 12.2 million (although we're sure the appearance of Kylie Minogue as Astrid Peth helped a little).

The article also continues claims that this year's viewing figures were lower than those of series one to four and also hints that there may have been teething troubles for the new production team in terms of budget cuts. It does however go on to reassure readers that:

"The BBC maintains that the season's consolidated average was in excess of 7 million. What is more, the latest finale was forced to compete with Wimbledon and the World Cup, making the viewing figures "extraordinary."

Steven added:

"The BBC are massively happy with it."

It looks like Doctor Who is here to stay for the foreseeable future, no matter what some may say!

Knight and Squire

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 09:52 AM PDT

I'm very pleased to say that my second book for DC Comics is a very British one. Knight and Squire appeared most recently in Grant Morrison's Batman run, and they come from a deliberately over the top, tremendously fun DC Britain that had previously been only slightly explored. If Captain Britain was a more realistic take on British superheroics, Knight and Squire delights in Mary Poppins absurdity, in what I think is a quite 2000AD way. The artist on this six issue miniseries is the great Jimmy Broxton, who I've found shares my joy in all things Round the Horne and Carry On. Check out the story at DC's blog here. And here's Yanick Paquette's lovely cover to our first issue:

In other DC news, following the selling out of my first issue of Action Comics, here's the lovely David Finch variant cover for our second edition, featuring Lex in his regular power suit:

I'm loving these gigs. I'm sure you can tell. Until next time, Cheerio!
