Doctor Who writer Steven MoffatThe Grand Moff has been teasing the Twitterati from the set of the Christmas Special. The Writer/Show-runner used his brand new Twitter account to tell his followers that Matt Smith was back filming as the Doctor.

""Oh, he's back behind the bow tie – and better than ever."

The special, rumoured to be called Father Who? is based on Charles Dickens 1843 classic A Christmas Carol and will feature special guest stars Sir Micheal Gambon (The Singing Detective, Harry Potter) and 'singing sensation' Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role.

Speaking on her first day on set Jenkins said:

""I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas special.

"I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!"

In another message Moffat added:

"Best thing about this job, I get to watch Doctor Who FIRST. Ooh, look at that. And that. And blimey, THAT!!"

"Ooh, I didn't expect to write THAT. I love it when i manage not to spoiler myself."

Expect more 140 character gems over the coming months to Christmas from @steven_moffat.

Andrew Cartmel @ Vworp 3

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 05:19 AM PDT

One of the guests at Sunday's Vworp 3 Doctor Who event is former script editor Andrew Cartmel, the man who reimagined the series in the late 1980s and brought some renewed, if short-lived, kudos to the show.

Former Doctor Who script editor Andrew CartmelAs part of LassFest, the Vworp 3 event takes 7 Doctor Who personalities and asks them to present and talk about 6 things about the show. The "pubcon" event takes place on Sunday, July 18th at 9.30am at Manchester's Lass O'Gowrie pub.

Andrew Cartmel of course was script editor from 1987-1989, for the duration of the Seventh Doctor era. As well as introducing some new back story to the Doctor, Cartmel also brought a tougher, sharper and less self indulgent attitude to episode pacing, something particularly reflected in Seasons 25 and 26. He also contributed books to the Virgin range of New Adventures.

Andrew will be appearing from 4pm, and chatting to Gareth Kavanagh, about his 6 favourite Doctor Who moments. See Vworp 3 News for the full schedule.

If you require further information and directions to the Lass O'Gowrie in central Manchester, visit www.thelass.co.uk – meanwhile check out www.wegottickets.com to purchase a ticket for £19.50.

Don't forget – The Lass O'Gowrie is a pub, so food and drink will be available for purchase!

Cybermen on Big Finish

Doctor Who - Legend of the Cybermen from Big FinishOut in July from Big Finish is Legend of the Cybermen, a thrilling new Doctor Who adventure starring Colin Baker as the Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon… and someone else!

Written by Mike Maddox, the adventure is directed by Nicholas Briggs who also features as the Cybermen voices…

The Cybermen are on the march through the Hundred Realms, killing and converting as they go. Resistance is useless.

Trapped on the outermost fringes of the battle, the Doctor and Jamie are astonished to encounter an old friend: astrophysicist Zoe Heriot.

It's the happiest of reunions. But what hope is there of a happy ending against the unstoppable Cybermen?

Starring Colin Baker and Frazer Hines as the Doctor and Jamie, Legend of the Cybermen also stars Wendy Padbury reprising Zoe Heriot, who like Jamie was last seen on TV at the conclusion of The War Games in 1969 (phantoms in the Death Zone notwithstanding).

Look out for our review of the episode this weekend – meanwhile, Legend of the Cybermen is available from Big Finish on CD and download.

Torchwood 4 characters revealed

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 11:13 PM PDT

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has published details on some of the main characters that will appear in the new series of Torchwood:
I've gathered on the new season (airing on my new favorite cable network, Starz), the show is out to cast a new series regular — Rex Matheson, a wickedly funny (operative word: wicked) CIA agent born to make waves. Almost as key to the new season are recurring characters Esther Katusi, a CIA grunt in her early 20s who learns what she's really made of only when she's forced to, and Oswald Jones, a convicted murderer and pedophile who will be as shocked as anyone to learn how easily infamy and fame can be exchanged for one another.
A variant of the news also appeared in TV Guide:
And Starz's new season of Torchwood is shaping up with the search for one series regular and two supporting roles. Rex Matheson is a white, twenty-something CIA agent who sounds sort of like FX's animated Archer spy: a fearless, cocky thrill seeker. Recurring characters include Esther Katusi, a newbie Watch Analyst in the CIA who is deeply (and secretly) in love with Rex. And Oswald Jones is the dangerous psychotic villain. He's a forty-something murderer and pedophile who gets sprung from the slammer into the spotlight. Rex — catch this sicko!
John Barrowman - who is currently promoting his new series of Tonight's The Night - has reported that filming for the series will commence in January 2011. The series is expected to broadcast during that summer both in the UK and the US.

New Torchwood Characters!

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 11:07 PM PDT

According to Entertainment Weekly, details of new characters for the upcoming series of Torchwood Series 4 have been released.

TorchwoodWhile John Barrowman and Eve Myles will continue in the roles as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, they are set to be joined by a new regular character, Rex Matheson, who is apparently a "CIA agent born to make waves" who also possesses a "wicked" sense of humour.

It seems that there will be another two recurring characters – apparently Oswald Jones is both a convicted murderer and paedophile; meanwhile Esther Katusi, is a young CIA agent "who learns what she's really made of only when she's forced to".

These additional roles seem to be important, to the overall series dynamic and storyline, although of course at this stage it is difficult to speculate how things will fit together.

Torchwood Series 4 will be produced by BBC America, BBC Wales and Starz Entertainment, with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner continuing in their Executive Producer roles.

The Daleks At BBC Proms 2010

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 09:29 PM PDT

During what will probably be the intermission for the Doctor Who Prom, a twenty minute segment detailing much of Doctor Who's musical history will air on BBC Radio 3:

"How do you make a sink-plunger seem scary? Matthew Sweet investigates  the weird and wonderful sound world of Doctor Who's incidental music.

"Matthew Sweet spent the Saturday tea-times of his youth peering at the  television, from behind the sofa, to watch Doctor Who.

"He time-travels  through the programme's 47-year   history to investigate the weird and wonderful sound world of its  incidental music.

"He talks with some of the composers who have  contributed, in very different musical styles,   to the enduring success of the programme over the decades."

The segment will be named Dance of the Daleks, and sounds quite enlightening.  Music is part of what makes Doctor Who, or really any television or film production, so fantastic.  Pop open any new series DVD and watch the semi-edited deleted scenes.  While brilliant, they're missing the crucial pulses and melodies of sound that help to add just the right touch of drama or humour, causing them to feel more like a soap opera and less like the greatest drama in the history of television.  It should be interesting to hear the history of this "vital essence" of music in Who.

Tune in to BBC Radio 3 or iPlayer between 8:20 and 8:40PM on Saturday, 24th July, to hear all about it!  Heck, why not just listen to the entire Doctor Who Prom from 7:30 to 9:45 PM; same day, same channel!  And don't forget, iPlayer is not limited to the UK when it comes to radio!

K-9 MCs Proms Event

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 07:07 PM PDT

K-9 vocalist and former Bungle, John Leeson is 'unsure' how die hard fans will react to K-9 Adventures, the rebooted K-9 spin off to be screened this Autumn on Five.

Doctor Who and Sarah Jane's metal mutt K-9Leeson who has just finished recording the voice of K-9 for twenty six new episodes, was speaking to Get Wokingham on the eve of compering the Cantley Proms on Saturday 18th July.

The metal mutt has already undergone a less rights infringing upgrade and will soon be seen defending the Earth, along side tweenagers Starkey and Jorjie after they seek refuge  in the home of Professor Gryffen, who is the inventor of a Time Manipulation device brings K-9 Mark I and two Jixen warriors to a near future London.

K-9's spinoff series was jointly created by Bob Baker and Paul Tams. Baker, working with his then writing partner, Dave Martin, created the original K9 for the Fourth Doctor story The Invisible Enemy.

The old dog pulled a neat new trick earlier this year when the show debuted on the 3rd April on the Disney XD channel- the same day a certain new Doctor crashed his Tardis into a little girls garden.

Leeson has been voicing the character of K-9 since 1977 but still manages to amaze himself with his vocal performance.

"It must be something I take in my tea!" he said.

The Cantley Proms takes place in the Cantley House Hotel, Milton Road, Wokingham on Sunday, July 18th.

The grounds open at 5.30pm and tickets cost £21 for adults, £18.50 for concessions and £8 children. For more details, call (0118) 978 9912 or log on to www.cantleyproms.co.uk.

Go "walkies" to Get Wokingham to read more about the man behind the mutt.

Barrowman’s Glee

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 05:44 PM PDT

Even though he's appeared in everything and its spin off  John Barrowman is still chasing those precious few roles.

Torchwood star John BarrowmanThe Doctor Who and Torchwood star has apparently begged producers of the TV phenomenon Glee, to cast him as one of Rachael Berry's (Lea Michele) Gay Dads.

Barrowman told Z-list celebrity chum bucket Heat magazine:

"I have no idea if I'll be in it, I met with their casting people and I said I'd love to be in it – I'd be good as one of Rachel's gay dads!"

Barrowman was last seen terrorising Wisteria Lane as Patrick Logan, Angie Bolen (Drea de Matteo) in Desperate Housewives and according to his agents will donning the WW1 chic again to play Captain Jack Harkness and filming the new internationally flavoured brand of Torchwood from January until June in 2011.

Glee, the global post modern musical which follows the fortunes of a high school show choir as they belt out old show stoppers and chart toppers is set to return on 21st September. The show has a massive following, if not an unanimously positive critical response (which can be summarised by how much umbrage you take with this statement by the New York Times: "Blissfully Unoriginal in a witty and imaginative way").

Knight and Squire

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 09:52 AM PDT

I'm very pleased to say that my second book for DC Comics is a very British one. Knight and Squire appeared most recently in Grant Morrison's Batman run, and they come from a deliberately over the top, tremendously fun DC Britain that had previously been only slightly explored. If Captain Britain was a more realistic take on British superheroics, Knight and Squire delights in Mary Poppins absurdity, in what I think is a quite 2000AD way. The artist on this six issue miniseries is the great Jimmy Broxton, who I've found shares my joy in all things Round the Horne and Carry On. Check out the story at DC's blog here. And here's Yanick Paquette's lovely cover to our first issue:

In other DC news, following the selling out of my first issue of Action Comics, here's the lovely David Finch variant cover for our second edition, featuring Lex in his regular power suit:

I'm loving these gigs. I'm sure you can tell. Until next time, Cheerio!

Mervyn Stone Launched!

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 04:12 AM PDT

Big Finish Publications is proud to announce the forthcoming release of three original fiction titles by Nev Fountain. The Mervyn Stone Mysteries will be published in hardback and leatherbound edition in October, with paperback versions following in 2011. The individual titles are confirmed as Geek Tragedy, DVD Extras Include: Murder and Cursed Among Sequels.

So who is Mervyn Stone?
"Mervyn Stone is an ex script editor of an old BBC1 science-fiction show, which exploded onto our TV screens in the mid 1980s," explains the author.  "Vixens from the Void was a hot mix of gorgeous women, skin-tight lycra, and phallic looking ray guns. It was as 80s as they come; as sexy, sharp, mad and dangerous as the contents of Madonna's old knicker drawer.
"That's Mervyn Stone's only claim to fame - that he co-devised and wrote for this show. He doesn't have much of a career anymore, he just goes to conventions, tells his whiskery old anecdotes, signs his autographs... And solves murders.
"Mervyn just can't help it. It's that script editor brain of his - he just keeps spotting those plot-holes and discovering whodunnit."

The Mervyn Stone Mysteries are a witty combination of detective fiction and fuzzy CSO sci-fi, as Mervyn solves a seemingly unsolvable homicide wherever he goes.
"I love detective novels, and I love old sci-fi shows," says Nev. "The reason why I combined the two seems so obvious to me.  When you tap into that world of cult tv, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, you come across such an amazing cross-section of characters. There are old actors who can't remember what the shows are about, obsessive fans who know nothing BUT the show, bewildered producers, cranky writers, excitable stunt men who appeared as a giant space lizard from the plant Krark in 1973 and who've dined out on the experience ever since...

"It's amazing the secrets and rivalries that grow over the years. It's a fantastic setting for murder mysteries...that's why I wasn't able to stop at writing just one book!

"I wanted to create a 'real' world where we follow Mervyn Stone's odd life, connected to this old show via an invisible umbilical cord - going from sci-fi conventions, to DVD commentaries, to celebrity signings, to charity auctions, to sea cruises, even to a possible big-budget revival of Vixens from the Void. And there are murders everywhere he goes!

"I want the reader to meet these larger-than-life characters again and again through the books; Vanity Mycroft, the insane diva, Bernard Viner, the angry special effects guy, Graham Goldingay, the rich obsessive fan... In one book they might be a suspect, then who knows? The next book they might even be a victim..."

The three books are available for pre-order now. There are discounted special offers for people who buy all three in advance of publication from bigfinish.com: the leatherback versions are available for £60 for all three, the hardbacks for £30 for all three, and the paperbacks for £22 for all three.

Look out for the Mervyn Stone Podcasts – featuring behind the scenes material from the makers of Vixens from the Void – at www.bigfinish.com during the summer.

Nev Fountain is an award-winning TV writer whose credits include Dead Ringers, Have I Got News For You and The impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson. His work for Big Finish includes Omega, The Kingmaker and the forthcoming Companion Chronicle Peri and the Piscon Paradox.

Guest Stars confirmed for Christmas Doctor Who

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 12:01 AM PDT

Doctor Who: Christmas
NB: Press Release link contains spoilers for those who have not seen The Big Bang.

The BBC has confirmed veteran actor Michael Gambon and opera diva Katherine Jenkins will guest star in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special.

Production starts today and will continue until August.

Michael Gambon is one of the UK's most respected actors, best known for his role as Philip Marlow in BBC television serial The Singing Detective and for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series.

Katherine Jenkins is a Welsh mezzo-soprano who has sold more than 4 million copies of her studio albums. This will be her first acting role. Arriving on set for her first day of filming, Katherine Jenkins said
I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special – I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!

Steven Moffat, Lead writer and Executive Producer on the series commented:
Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically.

The Singing Guest Stars

The BBC have announced two major guest stars for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. The first is legendary British actor Michael Gambon - famous for playing Dumbledore in the last few Harry Potter films and for his starring role in The Singing Detective. The other name revealed is that of Katherine Jenkins (pictured above) - who is famous for singing. This will be the very first acting role for the famous Welsh opera singer, who learned of her casting on her 30th birthday just a couple of weeks ago.

The 2010 Christmas special is written by Steven Moffat, and we won’t say more about it for now for spoiler reasons as we wait for the current season to finish broadcasting on Space and BBC America.

At the recent Readercon 21 convention, Rob's book of short stories Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical won the Shirley Jackson Award for Single-Author Collection. Presented yearly, the awards exist to honour 'outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic'.

Rob was on hand in Boston to accept the award, and is thrilled to have won. He is doubtless even now building a new mantlepiece to accommodate it...

Australian ratings for The Big Bang

Posted: 11 Jul 2010 06:15 PM PDT

Matt Smith's debut series has concluded in Australia. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's decision to 'fast-track' the latest series of Doctor Who has been vindicated by excellent ratings, the series receiving its highest consistent Australian ratings since its return in 2005 (and probably ever). The series averaged 928,000 viewers in the five major capital cities over thirteen weeks (these figures also do not include regional, time-shifted and iView viewers) and was normally the ABC's top-rating program of the day. TV Tonight reports that The Big Bang averaged 976,000 viewers in the five major capital cities, again despite stiff competition from the commercial networks. Yet again it was the ABC's top-rating program of the day, rating higher than its popular Sunday 7pm news and Little Dorrit, being the ninth highest rating program for the day overall. The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated an exceptional 732,000 viewers in the five major capitals.

But just getting to Miggea proves tricky. Reality is collapsing, ships are disappearing, and Captain Cornelius and his pirates are looking for easy pickings.

Even when they arrive, the Doctor and Amy's troubles won't be over. They have to find out who is so desperate to get the Arrow of Law that they will kill for it. And uncover the traitor on their own team. And win the contest fair and square.

And, of course, they need to save the universe from total destruction.

A thrilling, all-new adventure featuring the Doctor and Amy, as played by Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in the spectacular hit series from BBC Television written by the acclaimed science fiction and fantasy author Michael Moorcock

Also, 8th July saw the three latest three Doctor Who novels published:

Doctor Who: The King's Dragon
by Una McCormack

'They called it Enamour. It turned minds, sold merchandise, and swayed elections. And it did its job far too well...'

In the city-state of Geath, the King lives in a golden hall, and the people want for nothing. Everyone is happy and everyone is rich. Or so it seems. When the Doctor, Amy and Rory look beneath the surface, they discover a city of secrets. In dark corners, strange creatures are stirring. At the heart of the hall, a great metal dragon oozes gold.

Then the Herald appears, demanding the return of her treasure... And next come the gunships. The battle for possession of the treasure has begun, and only the Doctor and his friends can save the people of the city from being destroyed in the crossfire of an ancient civil war. But will the King surrender his new-found wealth? Or will he fight to keep it...?

Doctor Who: Nuclear Time
by Oli Smith

'My watch is running backwards.'

Colorado, 1981. The Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in Appletown – an idyllic village in the remote American desert where the townsfolk go peacefully about their suburban routines. But when two more strangers arrive, things begin to change. The first is a mad scientist – whose warnings are cut short by an untimely and brutal death. The second is the Doctor…

As death falls from the sky, the Doctor is trapped. The TARDIS is damaged, and the Doctor finds he is living backwards through time. With Amy and Rory being hunted through the suburban streets of the Doctor's own future and getting farther away with every passing second, he must unravel the secrets of Appletown before time runs out…

Doctor Who: The Glamour Chase
by Gary Russell

'Why are you here? I mean – who are you, exactly?'

An archaeological dig in 1936 unearths relics of another time... And – as the Doctor, Amy and Rory realise – another place. Another planet. But if Enola Porter, noted adventuress, has really found evidence of an alien civilisation, how come she isn't famous? Why has Rory never heard of her? Added to that, since Amy's been travelling with him for a while now, why does she now think the Doctor is from Mars?

As the ancient spaceship reactivates, the Doctor discovers that nothing and no one can be trusted. The things that seem most real could actually be literal fabrications – and very deadly indeed. Who can the Doctor believe when no one is what they seem? And how can he defeat an enemy who can bend matter itself to their will? For the Doctor, Amy and Rory – and all of humanity – the buried secrets of the past are very much a threat to the present...
