Posted: 14 Jul 2010 07:06 AM PDT Doctor Who is on its way to its second Proms! On Saturday 24th July, a live Radio 3 broadcast of the event featuring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will showcase both classical music and Murray Gold's fantastic Doctor Who compositions!
(Via the BBC Press Office) If you've never seen or have a hard time remembering the last time Doctor Who was at Proms, which was in 2008, have a look at the first 10 minutes! The rest of the event is also on YouTube if you hunt around a little bit in the "related videos" section. The clip below managed to distract me from writing this, so it's definitely worth a watch! Listen to this year's Doctor Who Prom and hear the audience's reactions next Saturday from 7:30 to 9:45PM on BBC Radio 3 or iPlayer! Since it's the radio version of iPlayer, it's available internationally; everyone on the planet can tune in live so long as they account for their time zone!
Posted: 14 Jul 2010 06:09 AM PDT Among the superb guest list at this weekend's PubCon Vworp 3 at the Lass O'Gowrie in Manchester is former Doctor Who script writer, series script editor and novelist Terrance Dicks! Terrance will be giving us an insight into his 6 favourite Doctor Who things, and I can tell you now that he has chosen a great selection of clips. Dicks first worked on Doctor Who in 1968 as assistant script editor, moving on to the full role one year later and collaborating with Malcolm Hulke on The War Games. Of course, Terrance Dicks is best known for his hugely successful working relationship with Doctor Who producer Barry Letts from 1970-1974, not to mention the vast number of Target adaptations of TV serials that were popular throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Terrance is expected to appear from 2pm, where he will present clip and chat with John Cooper. See Vworp 3 News for the full schedule. For more information and directions to the Lass O'Gowrie in central Manchester, visit www.thelass.co.uk – meanwhile check out www.wegottickets.com to purchase a ticket for £19.50. Don't forget – The Lass O'Gowrie is a pub, so food and drink will be available for purchase!

Terraphiles To Come A Week Early Posted: 14 Jul 2010 05:42 AM PDT You may recall our enthusiastic report (and believe us, we're still still just as stoked a month later) concerning the fast-approaching Doctor Who novel: The Coming of the Terraphiles by Michael Moorcock (whose legendary status is right up there with Neil Gaiman's). Forbidden Planet has decided to up-the-awesome and host a book signing with Moorcock at their London Megastore… a week in advance of the official release! That's right – if you're a Londoner, plan to be a Londoner, or just happen to be in London on 21 October, you can not only purchase your copy of Terraphiles seven days early, you can also get the autograph of the author, who is, let us say it again – legendary! If you're still not sold on the necessity of reading this book, here's an excerpt of the publisher's synopsis:
If you still want a signed copy of the book but can't be in London on the day of the event, you can always pre-order one from Forbidden Planet for £14.99, which is two quid cheaper than the future autograph-free retail price of £16.99! Sounds like a deal to us! Look at us; we're turning into The-Coming-of-the-Terraphiles-ophiles. Again, the signing will be at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, which is located at 179 Shaftesbury Avenue in London, on Thursday 21st October from 6 to 7PM. All decent booksellers will put the novel on their stands on Thursday 28th October.

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 11:17 PM PDT Written at a time when peace and love was just about to turn into anxiety and hate, The Dominators is one of those Second Doctor adventures that not only reflects its time but is also a brilliantly constructed piece of drama. Directed by the legendary Morris Barry and famous for the new baddies known as the Quarks, this one has the three travellers (the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe) really up to their eyes in bother. The Dominators – self proclaimed masters of the ten galaxies, and their robot servants, the Quarks, arrive on the planet Dulkis with evil intentions as the Doctor and his friends touch down for a peaceful holiday. Life is about to change dramatically for the pacifist Dulcians who, with no weapons on their planet, soon become enslaved to the Dominators. The Dulcian Councillors refuse to retaliate, however Cully, the rebellious son of the leader Senex, has already joined forces with the time travellers. The fight is on! The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe join a handful of determined Dulcians bent on outwitting the Quarks and struggling to escape the violent brutality of the Dominators. Being an adventure in 5 parts (though it was originally to have been a 6-parter) it kicked off season 6 and is one of the few "long ones" that's actually worth its airtime, being a great adventure with some smart effects. As for the Quarks, well these shambling pieces of hardboard were never really going to capture the public's imagination in the same way as the Daleks did. As for their voices, well these are indirectly hilarious. The script from Norman Ashby (a pseudonym for Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln who also invented the character of the Brigadier) bounces along and though far from original for science fiction in theme they manage to recreate the idea so it has some nice, surprising plot twists. Patrick Troughton shows why in The Dominators, for many, he is the Doctor. He delivers each line with real soul and depth, drawing the viewer into the story. The rest of the regulars also play this totally straight with Frazer Hines being a particular stand out. But at times the atmosphere is spoilt by the Quarks. These really were a poor design and just come across as a bit silly. View with the mindset that they only appeared once and that there's a great story to be seen here. The transfer of this adventure to DVD is nothing short of wondrous. To me this is better than broadcast standard with the outlines of figures being sharper than ever before. The soundtrack too is far more clear than any I've heard from the Troughton era. ExtrasAudio Commentary – Wendy Padbury, Frazer Hines, Giles Block, Arthur Cox and make-up artist Sylvia James all contribute to a rather pacy gag-track that's moderated by Toby Hadoke. Hines is his usual upbeat self and there's streams of anecdotes flowing from all concerned. Recharge and Equalise – The cast and crew reflect on the making of this monochrome serial. There's quite a number of people on hand here including Radiophonic Workshop designer Brian Hodgson so its an interesting segment aimed squarely at the fanbase rather than casual viewer. Tomorrow's Times: The Second Doctor – Now this is a nice compact extra, a brief look at the media coverage of the Second Doctor's tenure. Set in the same style as such shows as What The Papers Say and Points Of View, Third Doctor era actress Caroline John, who played smart scientist Liz Shaw, delivers witty and informative selections from the newspapers of years gone by. Photo Gallery – A compendium of snaps from the making of this adventure. Coming Soon – A trailer for the forthcoming DVD release of the Cyber box set which includes The Revenge Of The Cybermen and Silver Nemesis. PDF Materials – Radio Times listings that can be viewed when you insert this DVD into your PC or Mac. Subtitle Production Notes – Always watch with these switched on! Another fine selection of text trivia that takes a sideways (and often bizarre) insight into the happenings in and around the production of The Dominators story. If you're a fan of the black and white adventures then this one will already be on your list. If you're against such releases then give it a try, you never know you just might like it, just don't think too hard about the Quarks! The Dominators is out now on DVD from 2entertain – with an RRP of £19.99, you can pick it up from Amazon for just £12.99!

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 10:06 PM PDT Doctor Who head honcho boss man "The Grand Moff" Steven Moffat has hit back at attempts to generate a pubic feud between himself and comedian and writer Stephen Fry, who recently commented that the popular family drama is "not for adults". Clearly the two men have a difference of opinion on the matter of whether Doctor Who is for grown ups or not; more than likely, Fry was misquoted/placed out of context, with his words possibly referring to the plaudits received by BBC One's Saturday night family shows acting as a barrier to more progressive, grown-up drama being produced. If so, Fry has got a point. As for Steven Moffat:
He's right. The Doctor Who Executive Producer is also naturally aware of the magnitude of the task of looking after the series, likening the Doctor to some of Britain's greatest heroes.
King Arthur, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, the Doctor. It's quite a list of legendary figures, don't you think?

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 05:41 PM PDT I think we're all pretty much agreed on the fact that your can't beat a bit of Bernard Cribbins; although I think any decision on badly-researched hacks can wait. Recently the Cribster was at the first night of The Railway Children at Waterloo station (no, really) and was asked by the press what made his list if credits so memorable. His answer? Without hesitation, Bernard Cribbins replied:
With typical deadpan timing, Cribbins was nevertheless on the nail. Of course he's a find actor but he has also been extremely wise with his choice of work, from The Railway Children of course through to the classic episode of Fawlty Towers ("The Hotel Inspector") to the recent (not "classic", Tim Walker) appearances in Doctor Who as Donna Noble's granddad, Wilf Mott, most notably in the David Tennant era finale, The End of Time.
