Were They Right? Gillian Anderson in Doctor Who? Posted: 19 Jul 2010 09:00 AM PDT The date was 23 April 2009. The Telegraph runs the following story about Gillian Anderson being cast as The Rani in Doctor Who (see link and quote below). Since that time we have seen a year of specials starring David Tennant and a whole new series starring Matt Smith. Where's Gillian Anderson? We are still waiting...
Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:39 AM PDT A by-product of the ongoing IDW Doctor Who series featuring the Tenth Doctor is that it often feels like its trapped in two duelling time warps. On the one hand, it has to remain interesting and unique enough to capture the attention of fans already swooning over Matt Smith whilst on the other it has to bring the Tenth Doctors story to a conclusion without stepping on the toes of the TV series and its spin-off medium. So while there are limitless stories left to tell about any past Doctors adventures it can feel a little underwhelming being so far away from the shiny new era of Who and a definitive conclusion. According to a review by comicbookresources it all serves to work against the 2010 annual which it calls a:
The annual is comprised of four stories including a prelude to Final Sacrifice, the final Tenth Doctor tale which begins in issue#13 and is penned by Tony Lee and inked by artist Matthew Dow Smith. Dow Smith also writes and draws The Big, Blue Box, a story that follows a man who is told by the Doctor that his entire life is lie and is singled out by CBR for:
Faring less well, Screenwriter Jonathan Davis and artist Kelly Yates tackle the main 22 page story Ground Control, which sees the Doctor and a host of familiar faces (and a cloak wearing, spear carrying Panda) arguing over the status of the TARDIS as a weapon, which the website calls:
Despite a few knocks for its unoriginal story Al Davison's To Sleep, Perchance to Scream is praised highly for the artists "lush details and psychedelic landscapes" as well as his spot-on character designs. The Annual is only available in North America though can be picked up from Amazon.com for $7.99 (roughly about £5.23) Anyone wishing to catch up with IDW's Tenth Doctor Saga (and its recommended that you do) Volume one: Fugitive is available for £9.61 while Volume Two: Tessaract (which is currently unavailable) retails for £12.47 (Via ComicBookResources)

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 07:31 AM PDT As impressive acts of nerdom go, its up their with calling your child Harley Quinn or knitting the entire first level of Super Mario Bros on a scarf. For the past year Canadian Whovians Rob Green (I bet this Rob Green can holdonto a ball) and Peter Nesbitt have been building their own Dalek from toilet plungers, paint rollers and old Christmas ornaments. Work began last may, costing around $1,500 to complete and standing five feet and six inches tall, the gold Dalek features movable weaponary, a wheelchair motor and a voice modulator so the machine, called Auric, can authentically say the villains most famous catchphrase "Would you care for some tea?"…oh, i mean "Exterminate!" For the pair of big kids the idea was too go to pass up:
The idea orginated from Nesbitt after he stumbled Project Dalek, a UK based Dalek-building website. The pair hope to use the Dalek for charity events and conventions but not before Green invites it to a Block Barbecue near his Computer Store in Waterloo, Ontario. Cable channel Space will be airing the finale, The Big Bang, next Saturday followed by an interactive live show featuring an expert panel, never before seen interviews and a live web chat for fans. Posted: 19 Jul 2010 06:27 AM PDT What would happen if everyone's favourite Time Lord was not broadcast as live action, but sent over the air as anime? Paul "OtaKing" Johnson, a 32-year-old professional translator from Sheffield, has attempted to answer that question. Emulating the style of '80s Japanese Animation, Johnson has worked what must be exhaustingly long hours hand-drawing each individual frame for what will ultimately be an eleven-minute short featuring the Third Doctor, the first two on-screen incarnations of the Master, a horde of Daleks whose design resembles that of the Davies era, and a few slightly unrecognizable Cybermen, who look three times more brawny than we've ever seen them on television. With a total of thirteen minutes of video including everything from initial sketches to clips of the final project having been on YouTube for quite some time, this endeavour may not come across as news to some of those who like to scour the internet for Whovian videos, but the Anime News Network did announce that Johnson is almost finished, and is planning on showing it to the BBC (which, of course, owns the rights to Who) before any kind of release to the general public. Johnson has also warned his potential viewers not to expect a complete story, saying:

Series 5 boxset to include new TARDIS scenes? Posted: 19 Jul 2010 04:04 AM PDT The forthcoming Series 5 boxset will reportedly include two brand new scenes featuring the Doctor and Amy Pond. According to an LA Times blog exclusive, the new sequences, entitled ‘Meanwhile, in the TARDIS…’ are written by series showrunner himself, Steven Moffat, and serve as drop-in moments that help bridge the gaps between episodes. The article also suggests that the 6-disc set [...]

Posted: 18 Jul 2010 09:55 PM PDT It's been a wait of 26 years, but at last the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa are back together this month in Cobwebs, a four part audio story by Jonathan Morris. And there's more to come in The Whispering Forest and The Cradle of the Snake. Many people have asked whether this will be a one-off reunion, or whether there are plans for more. We're delighted to reveal that the dream team will be back together in a new run of stories to be released in 2011, as Peter, Janet, Mark and Sarah have committed to a run of new recordings later this year.
Frazer Hines reveals cancer battle Posted: 18 Jul 2010 08:05 PM PDT Frazer Hines has recently revealed that he had been battling bowel cancer for eleven years. The actor has said that he kept his illness secret in fear of finding that he would no longer be offered work, but has now been given the all clear and is promoting awareness of the illness through Cancer Research and the Bobby Moore Cancer Foundation. Only close family were aware of his illness, which also didn't feature in his recently published his revised autobiography Hines Sight. Speaking to the People, the actor talked about dealing with the illness: They said I had a 25 per cent chance of survival. The prognosis was terrifying. My brother Roy died of lung cancer aged 41, my dad of a heart attack at 62. I suddenly thought, The Hines arent going to live very long. It was like I was next in line to go. The actor is of course best known to readers of the Doctor Who News page as popular companion to the second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon - there is currently a facebook campaign to get the actor back into both Doctor Who and his other long-running acting commitment Emmerdale! When I got out of the hospital bed (after a bowel operation and chemotherapy treatment) I walked to the mirror and saw this grey face staring back. I told myself, "there's someone who's cheated death." After they discharged me I felt like I wanted to grab life by the horns. The first morning I was home, I went for a ride on my motorbike. Liz (Hobbs, Frazer's then wife) was furious and said I would rip my stitches out. During the period Frazer continued to work in a panto in Grantham. I did the chemo in the morning then, with a catheter in place, I attended rehearsals and went back for chemo in the evening. I did 13 shows a week. I never told anyone in the cast. I never felt sick and was full of energy. My hair actually grew so much that I could put a bow in it by the last show. I had chemo for four months. A scan later showed he was clear of cancer but doctors warned there was a risk it could return. For the next five years, I still didn't tell anybody and certainly didn't want it to become common knowledge in the showbiz world as I knew I would never work again. I thought if people in TV knew, they'd think "we can't have him, hes got cancer, too big a risk." I also didn't want fans to feel sorry for me and have everyone thinking I was at death's door. I wanted people to treat me like normal no matter what I was going through. I stayed away from TV but did theatre. On stage you always have an understudy, so if I took a turn for the worse I wouldnt let anyone down. On TV you would and there would be no coming back from that. I had six-monthly check-ups until this year when a colonoscopy confirmed I was in the clear. It felt I was finally free again. Now I can tell people and help inspire them. Bowel cancer doesnt have to be a death sentence. You can survive. I did.
