Radio Times Interviews

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Radio TimesBoth Matt Smith and Steven Moffat are interviewed in the new edition of Radio Times.

In a "School Holidays" special issue of the magazine, Smith is interviewed by Jack, 13:
What makes you different from previous Doctors?
- I'm younger, so my skin is a bit smoother. What would you say makes me different? Bigger ears?
You're crazier.
- There you go, I'm crazier.
How many marks out of ten would you give yourself so far?
- That's a tough one. Let's say eight. I've two episodes left, so I can still get to ten. I don't want to undersell myself.
We don't often see the Doctor eating anything. My favourite food is sausage and mash. What's yours?
- Spaghetti bolognese, banana sandwiches. I love biscuits with tea and am partial to a chocolate muffin or two.
And also in the magazine, Doctor Who Executive Producer and Lead writer Steven Moffat writes about his new project Sherlock:
When I was a little Beano-reading Doctor Who fan – about nine or ten – I was desperate to know more about Sherlock Holmes. It was a name I'd heard. I knew he was some kind of policeman, I knew he had a funny hat, and I knew he was in a film called The Hound of the Baskervilles, which once came on the telly and got me sent to bed because it was too frightening. I remember lying upstairs that night, too excited to sleep – because I could hear the baying of a terrible hound, and the rapid-fire voice of a policeman who fought monsters. I needed to find out more, because I knew already this was my kind of hero: if Doctor Who had been a detective, clearly he'd have been Sherlock Holmes.

Ianto’s Dead: Get Over It!

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 08:40 AM PDT

One man publicity blitzkrieg John Barrowman has told AfterElton that fans need to let go of former Torchwood's 'general support officers' death and look forward to (Group) Captain Jack's future sexual escapades.

Torchwood's Ianto Jones. Dead.Asked about his reaction to fans who felt 'cheated' by Ianto's death at the hands of the 456 in Children of Earth , Barrowman replied;

"Get over it. I know that's harsh but comes a point where you have to move on with the story. We had to do something that would create a massive drama and we didn't discuss it because everyone was happy with it and that was just it. But who knows what will happen in the future – that's John Barrowman speaking speculatively – nothing has been said."

In the aftermath of Ianto's death AfterElton, who placed him as third in the top fifty best gay and bisexual TV characters (in a list topped by Jack himself) responded to hurt readers comments, reassuring them that Writer/Executive Producer Russell T. Davies, like Joss Whedon before him, was not toying with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) fans affection for beloved gay characters by murdering them.

The gay website published a rebuttal (and its well worth a read) that saw Ianto's death as a sign that LGBT fans and characters were leaving behind their television roles as victims.

John Barrowman on Torchwood 4Barrowman believes that fans need to trust the show and look ahead to its bright new, international future:

"I can understand why people would feel that but just trust us. Jack will still be Jack and we will not put him back in the closet and people should let him have other relationships. I for one am excited by Captain Jack's future.

I remember I tweeted a couple of weeks back announcing the new series of Torchwood and from all the replies I got only one person said that they were not going to watch it because Ianto wasn't going to be in it, and I suspect that he probably will still watch!"

The all round entertain has also found time in between, acting, writing, performing,  judging and presenting to watch the first episode of Series Five of Doctor Who;

"I thought it was very sweet and I am looking forward to catching up with the rest of the series on my iPad when I can."

Click here to read more about John's time on Desperate Housewives, those Glee rumours and just what he hopes to see from David Cameron's government.

John can currently be seen in wish grant-a-thon Tonight's the Night on BBC1 at 8pm this Saturday.

The Ballad of (McCoy as) Bilbo Baggins

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 07:47 AM PDT

Despite the financial difficulties facing MGM and the subsequent departure of original director Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) several casting rumours have put Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, in line for a role in The Hobbit.

1980s Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoyNothing has been confirmed yet but Peter Jackson, who is close to putting pen to paper on directing both installments of the adaptation of  J.R.R Tolkien's seminal novel, was believed to have jetted across the globe to speak to his actors last month, taking for granted that Warner Bros deal to buy MGM's rights to The Hobbit was a sure thing.

Already confirmed to reprising their roles from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy are Sir Ian McKellen (X-Men, Apt Pupil)  as Gandalf the Grey, Andy Serkis (King Kong, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) as Gollum and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Transformers)  as Elrond.

McKellan had threatened to walk from the project unless he was informed of what was happening with the rights hampered, director-less and not yet greenlit films.

Rumours have already circulated that McCoy was to be cast as Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The Hobbit who 60 years later would return in the follow up; Lord of the Rings.

In The Hobbit Bilbo is charged with the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and stealing the Dragon Smaug's treasure. Along the way Bilbo avoids capture by Gollum after he finds the Ring and uses its powers of invisibility to slip away.

McCoy was said to have been close to getting the role in Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy but lost out to Sir Ian Holm (Time Bandits, Brazil).

Given that Holm is 77 and McCoy, a sprightly 66 (Bilbo was fifty in the novel) it seems likely that a second stab might be given to the former question mark zealot. The role is expected to be filled by a younger actor with an older Bilbo recounting the tale.

Actors rumoured for Young Bilbo have been Toby Maguire (Spider-Man, The Good German). James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland, Wanted) and the Tenth Doctor himself David Tennant (erh…Doctor Who).

Screenrush were the first to break the news after bumping into McCoy outside a theatre in London where they were given the exclusive that he may be  playing Bilbo by:

"a source 'close to him'"

Nothing has been confirmed by McCoy's agent yet, though frankly the man must be doing cartwheels around Piccadilly Circus with all the free publicity his charge is getting.

Who writer Paul Cornell has already commented on the news via his Twitter page:

"I think Sylvester McCoy would be a great choice to play The Hobbit. I hope it's true. I'd enjoy seeing the annoyable annoyed at that"

What do you think of the former Doctor, who has had his detractors, entering Middle Earth?

Fame Isn’t Lame For Karen Gillan

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 06:15 AM PDT

Doctor Who's Karen Gillan dressed downIt's always nice to see a celebrity treat her stardom with a sense of humour.  While most actresses daring to make public appearances would spend the whole of one of their twenty-digit paychecks trying to find the right outfit all in the name of vanity, Karen Gillan, who portrays the Scottish Scarlet-Haired Fury, also known as Amy Pond, in Doctor Who, found it perfectly acceptable to show up to the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup Final in an eye-catching blue shirt-dress-thing and clogs.

Even in the eyes of this contributor, who is male and has the fashion sense of a dung beetle, this is a very unusual look for, well, anyone.  But still, kudos must go to Karen for not altering her more-eccentric-than-the-Eleventh-Doctor personality just because she's suddenly famous.  It's a sign of excellent character on her part and it adds more weight to the argument that she's actually a human being, not a robotic Hollywood star whose sole function is to use her fame to buy clothes.  She's a fantastic role model for the military of pre-teen girls who look up to her (although if she continues to be one, we may have some very unusual-looking females in the next few years).

Karen Gillan's next appearance in Doctor Who will be the Christmas special, rumoured to be called Father Who?, which will most likely air on 25th December.  The episode is being filmed as we speak and is scheduled to continue production until August.

Gillan: Matt Smith’s Not Leaving

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 05:55 AM PDT

Myth debunking time!  Whether you hate his guts and want David Tennant back or think he's the best thing since fish fingers dipped in custard, it seems Matt Smith will be "Doctorin' the TARDIS" for many years to come!

Smith's co-star Karen Gillan, who goes by the name of Amy Pond in some show we've never heard of called Doctor Who, dismissed the recent tale spinning across computers that suggested Smith would be departing the series following his second season, saying:

"Matt will be sticking around.

"I think those rumours were made up."

It's short, it's sweet, it's to the point, and it puts to rest any fears of yet another bout of New Doctor Anxiety in the near future similar to what we suffered for the whole of 2009.

Smith and Gillan have been working on the set of the Christmas special lately, along with Katherine Jenkins, Michael Gambon, and presumably Arthur Darvill (unfortunately, very little news of Rory being in the special has surfaced, although Steven Moffat has mentioned the word "honeymoon" when teasing the plot of the episode).

(Via Digital Spy)

Is Smith a Baker, or a Baker?

Now that we once again have no clue how long we'll get to keep Matt Smith, for how much time do you think he'll don the bow tie?  Will he have the long-lived reign of the Fourth Doctor, or the one of the cut-short stints of the Sixth, Eighth, and Ninth?  Or will he be somewhere in the middle?  The comment thread below is a useful place for communicating these thoughts!

Moff’s Hate Mail

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 11:46 PM PDT

Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat has revealed that he receives hate mail from a David Tennant fan.

Moffat was speaking via Twitter, the micro-blogging service available on PCs, mobiles and games consoles.

Steven Moffat - now on TwitterDavid Tennant announced his decision to leave Doctor Who in 2008, although apparently wobbled in his decision to leave when Moffat tried to convince the Tenth Doctor actor to stay.

Apparently Steven Moffat is targeted by a sole David Tennant fan, to general bewilderment.

"I don't get much hate mail, but when I do it's always from a lady David Tennant fan. Why?

"He's a mate of mine and everything!"

Tennant last appeared in The End of Time, Part 2 on New Year's Day, and is currently filming romantic comedy Decoy Bride.

Constellation Awards 2010

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 09:39 PM PDT

Canada's annual science fiction awards, the Constellations, have now taken place. Doctor Who and its related shows had been nominated in a number of categories:

The Best Male Performance in a 2009 Science Fiction Television Episode category was won by former Doctor David Tennant, gaining 23% of the vote for his performance in The Waters of Mars; he narrowly beat Robin Dunne from Sanctuary at 22%. Torchwood star Gareth David Lloyd had also been nominated in this category, coming in at fifth place (8%) for Torchwood: Children of Earth.

However, Doctor Who itself did not fare so well in the Best Science Fiction Television Series of 2009 category; having won the award three years running, this time it only managed third place at 17%, behind Defying Gravity(22%) and Supernatural(23%).

In other categories, actress Michelle Ryan came fourth with 13% of the vote in Best Female Performance in a 2009 Science Fiction Television Episode for her role as Christina in Planet of the Dead; Torchwood: Children of Earth came third for Best Overall 2009 Science Fiction Film or Television Script (20%); and finally actress Aurora Buchanan came fifth(10%) in Best Female Performance in a 2009 Science Fiction Film, TV Movie, or Mini-Series for fan-made film Doctor Who: Victimsight.

Smith & Moffat in Radio Times

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:42 PM PDT

In a 'School Holidays' special issue of Radio Times, Doctor Who star Matt Smith is interviewed by 13 year old Jack, while Steven Moffat waxes lyrical about Sherlock Holmes.

There's plenty to keep Doctor Who fans happy in the new edition of Radio Times, out today, as Matt Smith and Steven Moffat both make appearances. Matt Smith was certainly put on the spot by young Jack:

What makes you different from previous Doctors?

I'm younger, so my skin is a bit smoother. What would you say makes me different? Bigger ears?

You're crazier.

There you go, I'm crazier.

How many marks out of ten would you give yourself so far?

That's a tough one. Let's say eight. I've two episodes left, so I can still get to ten. I don't want to undersell myself.

We don't often see the Doctor eating anything. My favourite food is sausage and mash. What's yours?

Spaghetti bolognese, banana sandwiches. I love biscuits with tea and am partial to a chocolate muffin or two.

That last question is a great one. Id like to see the adult version, wherein we find out what the Doctor does in the bathroom…

Meanwhile Steven Moffat's other BBC project, Sherlock, is given some attention, as the Doctor Who writer explains his love of Arthur Conan Doyle's enduring literary creation.

"When I was a little Beano-reading Doctor Who fan – about nine or ten – I was desperate to know more about Sherlock Holmes. It was a name I'd heard. I knew he was some kind of policeman, I knew he had a funny hat, and I knew he was in a film called The Hound of the Baskervilles, which once came on the telly and got me sent to bed because it was "too frightening".

"I remember lying upstairs that night, too excited to sleep – because I could hear the baying of a terrible hound, and the rapid-fire voice of a policeman who fought monsters. I needed to find out more, because I knew already this was my kind of hero: if Doctor Who had been a detective, clearly he'd have been Sherlock Holmes."

The new Radio Times is out now and available from all good newsagents/supermarkets/chemists/petrol stations and in my local dentists in 2015.
