Audio Offer “Misleading”

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 04:27 AM PDT

The Daily Telegraph's Doctor Who audiobook offer in May has come under fire from the Advertising Standards Authority for misleading readers about the nature of the offer.

Anyone buying the Daily Telegraph between April 23rd and 30th from WHSmith had the chance to pickup the following:
Doctor Who - Pest Control read by David Tennant

The Runaway Train - An original story, read by Matt Smith

Pest Control Part One – read by David Tennant

Pest Control Part Two – read by David Tennant

Slipback – Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Valentine Dyall star in this BBC Radio 4 adventure from 1985

Exploration Earth – Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen star in this special BBC School Radio episode from 1976.

Genesis of the Daleks – Tom Baker narrates an abridged audio version of the 1975 television adventure.

Mission on the Unknown – The soundtrack to a Doctor Who adventure from 1965, but which famously does not feature the Doctor himself, with linking narration by Peter Purves

This week long offer was apparently spearheaded by the Telegraph promoting the initial two-part release as a "free" giveaway; however many members of the public would have had to pay £12.99 to receive the majority of the giveaway by post.

Alerting readers to the giveaway, the Sunday Telegraph published a "Free Inside: Dr Who Audiobook read by David Tennant" banner – yet i was not clear until reading terms and conditions inside the Monday edition that readers were informed of the £12.99 charge if the postal option was taken up in preference to collecting the CD from a branch of WHSmith.

According to the ASA watchdog:

"significant qualification to the offer was not made clear to readers at the point at which they were introduced to the offer, the front-page flash was misleading".

The ASA also said it considered that the audiobooks were "not free to those consumers who took up the offer through the postal route".

"Because the audiobooks were not free to all respondents, we concluded that the claim that the audiobooks were 'free' was misleading."

The Man Who Invented The Daleks

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 03:21 AM PDT

Terry nation"The Man Who Invented The Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation" is a new biography on the life of writer Terry Nation by Alwyn W. Turner, and is due to be published by Aurum Books during the spring of next year.

The book will focus on Nation's work during the 1960s and 1970s, covering series such as Survivors, Blake's Seven, The Avengers, The Saint, The Persuaders! and of course Doctor Who, plus his involvement with comedian Tony Hancock and Associated London Scripts.

Says Sam Harrison from Aurum:
In his acclaimed histories Crisis? What Crisis? and Rejoice! Rejoice! Alwyn has proven himself one of the most stylish and authoritative writers on British popular culture working today. By drawing together the various strands of Terry Nation's life and career, this book will offer a captivating window onto the creative melting pot without which British television today would look very different.

The author Alywn Turner is interested to hear from anyone who knew and wishes to share their memories of Terry Nation, and may be contacted by email.

Doctor John Watson

Posted: 21 Jul 2010 10:07 PM PDT

Doctor Who - Matt SmithDen of Geek has revealed that current Time Lord Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Watson in the new Sherlock Holmes television series a week before he auditioned for the role of the Doctor.

The new take on the classic sleuth has been created and devised by Doctor Who gods Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and well known British actor Martin Freeman as his loyal sidekick Watson.

However, before Freeman was cast Matt Smith turned up to have a go at interpreting the famous literary character. Mark Gatiss commented about Cumberbatch and Freeman:

"They got on immediately… it just clicked."

And how lucky we are that we got fantastic Matt to be the new TARDIS key holder instead, things could have been so different. Looking at things from another angle, Smith has proved in the 2010 series of Doctor Who that he has all the qualities and quirks that make a fantastic Doctor but his acting abilities could also have worked to create a great take on Sherlock Holmes.

Looks like you were auditioning for the wrong part Matt!

"Pls follow my friend @dannyhorn who is also in the Doctor Who Xmas Special. Tho we can't tell you what he does/is or we'll have to kill you!"
