Posted: 21 Jul 2010 08:17 AM PDT Writing in Doctor Who Magazine, Steven Moffat has confirmed the key members of the production team for Series 32 of Doctor Who, the sixth series since the programme returned in 2005. The team at the top will remain the same with Piers Wenger and Beth Willis continuing their role as Executive Producers on the series. As previously reported, Sanne Wohlenberg will take over as producer on the first two filming blocks of the series, following the departure of Tracie Simpson who has left to work on The Fabulous Baker Boys. The new Production Designer is Michael Pickwoad who takes over from Edward Thomas who is now working on Outcasts. Pickwoad has recently been working on the ITV production of The Prisoner, for which he was nominated for an Art Directors Guild Award. Other series he has worked on include Miss Marple, Sweeney Todd, David Copperfield, Kavanagh QC and Murder Most Horrid. He designed the 1987 film Withnail & I, which starred Paul McGann.

Posted: 21 Jul 2010 06:40 AM PDT Former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy has been unveiled as a chieftain for a Highland games event! The Scottish actor, who played the Seventh Doctor in the cult BBC series in the 1980s, said he was "absolutely delighted" with the role for the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon. In what amounts to the busiest period of Seventh Doctor news since he appeared in the 1996 TV movie – McCoy has also been linked with a star role in The Hobbit – Sylvester will be on hand for various ceremonial tasks at the event, such as presenting prizesto the winners of the Cowal Pipe Band Championships and the World Highland Dancing Championship. McCoy will also take the salute during the pipe band march past during the event. We don't know if there is any requirement for Sylvester to rrrroll his rrrrs, but we're certain he will, given the excuse. (Via PA)

Everything That’s Evil (And Counting) Posted: 21 Jul 2010 05:06 AM PDT If you've been on any Doctor Who fan or news site during the past week, then you're likely already aware of the Guardian's ambitious goal of compiling a list of every single villain, monster, or general antagonist ever to appear in the televised part of the franchise. In a thus-far analysis of the project that's worth a read, the Guardian's Simon Rogers shares,
Most of the comments pertained to the enemies that the list still lacked: The Zarbi from The Web Planet, the Zygons from Terror of the Zygons, the Silurians and the Sea Devils. The Guardian has since listened to many of the firestorm of comments you've given them, and has updated accordingly. The aforementioned enemies have all been added to the database, as well as Lady Adrasta of The Creature from the Pit, the Anti-Matter Organism from The Three Doctors, Aukon from State of Decay, Axons from The Claws of Axos, Bannermen of Delta and the Bannermen, the Blowfish from the Alliance in The Pandorica Opens, and the most important Doctor Who enemy of all time: the San Francisco street gang that felled Sylvester McCoy in the TV Movie! Sadly, we have no complete record of all the baddies who have been added to the now 238-creature-strong force, so other than those foes we've already discussed, most of which we figured out by contrasting the two images below, it's difficult to say who else is there now that wasn't before. We're now saving records of each update, so that in the future, starting with the next version of the list to be made available, we'll be able to tell you exactly how many monsters have been added and which ones they were! In the meantime, have a glance at this visual of the number of enemies that have been thrown in the boat, courtesy of Many Eyes: Here's what the compilation looked like before the update: And here it is now: And just think – they still haven't named 'em all! Who's Left? Take a look at the new database, and tell us in our comment section who's missing, for conversational purposes. Then leave a comment here or a tweet @guardian informing the makers of your findings!

Daily Telegraph Offer was Misleading Posted: 21 Jul 2010 04:54 AM PDT The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld two complaints against The Telegraph Media Group over its free audio book offer which took place in April and which was promoted in the The Sunday Telegraph as a Free Doctor Who Audio Book read by David Tennant. One complaint said the offer was misleading as it did not make clear that the audiobook came in two parts and that part two would be included in Monday's paper. A second complainant said the claim that the audiobooks were "free" was misleading, as under the terms and conditions customers who did not live near a WH Smith store would have to pay £12.99 to receive the audiobooks by post. Both complaints were upheld with the paper instructed not to repeat the offence.

The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation Posted: 21 Jul 2010 12:48 AM PDT Scheduled for Spring 2011, Alwyn W. Turner's The Man Who Invented the Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation is a biography of the Dalek creator and prolific TV adventure series writer. Cardiff-born Terry Nation was one of the most successful, prolific and celebrated writers for popular television that Britain has ever produced. His science fiction series Survivors and Blake's 7, from the late-1970s, have been durable cult and critical hits, one being re-made thirty years on and the other constantly rumoured for return, while his villainous creations the Daleks ensured, and at times eclipsed, the success of Doctor Who. The Man Who Invented the Daleks will focus on Nation's work in the 1960s and 1970s, charting a career that also saw him join the legendary Associated London Scripts, become chief writer for a troubled Tony Hancock and play a key role in hit international adventures series such as The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders!. Aurum's Sam Harrison said:

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 10:22 PM PDT New series, new Doctor, new production team. Following Matt Nida's 2010 series critique (Geroni-Meh!), the reviewers of the individual episodes got together to provide their own thoughts on season 31 (aka Series 5 and Series Fnarg) as a whole. (We really did get together. There was cake.) ChristianTime… time…TIME? Future jackets vs continuity errors, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey intricacies – that's what summed Doctor Who up for me in 2010. Matt Smith was great of course, and I'm quite fond of his leggy companion, but what most impressed me were the intricacies of Steven Moffat's arc plotting, from The Eleventh Hour through to The Big Bang. I'm under no illusions that some episodes were pale shadows of what they should have been, and perhaps the added load of fitting in elements that can then be referred back to later on was too much for certain writers. Certainly as far as Victory of the Daleks and The Beast Below go, there was little to recommend subsequent viewings despite show-stopping moments like "Spitfires in Space". But where Steven Moffat's first season in change has impressed is with the extrapolation of the confused-time themes of The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and Silence in the Library into a full season. I totally love stuff like this, and while there were moments in The Big Bang that perhaps didn't make sense, the same can be said of one of its thematic stable mates, Back to the Future 2. Seeding that "Future Doctor" moment from the finale into Flesh and Stone was particularly effective, as were suggestions from River Song that she's a bit of a bad'un, and this represents the other side of the The Grand Moff's plotting. He's not only brought the season together with timey-wimey brilliance, there's even more to come! One thing that I always disliked about the previous series was how everything was tidily sorted out with the "do too much" finale of the Russell T Davies era. Moffat didn't even try to sort everything out, leaving the nature of the "Silence", the entity controlling the TARDIS, the identity of the owner of the TARDIS in The Lodger and various River Song-related bits and bobs to the next season. Episodic, ongoing, timey-wimey – great stuff! You can read Christian's reviews of The Eleventh Hour and The Big Bang. BrianFrom the start of the season it was clear to see that Moffat knows Doctor Who. In the beginning, while The Eleventh Hour was a great episode, I thought he might have just known past Doctor Who a bit too well with all the reused ideas in that story. But as the series progressed it got better and better. While, as a fan, I had small issues with certain episodes along the way that by no means meant they weren't good, just that it was not my vision of the show and I had to get passed that as I did with the Russell T. Davies era. Once I got to The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone my issues all took a back seat. I enjoyed every minute of that story and am proud to say that I noticed the Doctor walking through his own past – although admittedly I did wonder at first if it was a production error – but then started to wonder if it was more. And it was! As the series moved on ever further, we got reintroduced to Rory and the TARDIS had a team again. A team that got along the way that friends do, meaning sometimes there is tension but on the whole they are there for each other. Just like the good old days. Then Rory died. I was really taken aback by this. Half expecting it but hoping it wouldn't happen. When the time came for the Doctor to meet Vincent Van Gogh, the series just seemed like it could do no wrong. And now that The Big Bang has come and gone I am left with the feelings I've wanted to feel at any of the series finales. Joy. Not sadness, not tears, not emo stuff. Just joy. The heroes are together and read to take on the universe again and loving every minute of it. Perfect. Brian reviewed Amy's Choice and Vincent and the Doctor.
