Neil Gaiman Runs Out of Cash

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:57 PM PDT

Neil Gaiman has reached a point that many first time Doctor Who writers come to when creating their script for the show, in terms of his imagination on the page and the budget that has been allocated for the episode not merging well!

Neil Gaiman, Doctor Who writerThe writer has been blogging recently about his experiences when writing for Doctor Who:

"The wonderful thing about books and comics is your budget is infinite: it costs the same to draw one thing as another, to write one thing as another…That's not true of television, where a budget might stretch to prosthetics or CGI, but not both…

"Truthfully, I'm not grumbling, I'm loving writing Doctor Who, and so far, each draft really has been better than the one before."

His final draft is almost complete and should commence filming soon. It's also worth noting that Neil's episode is rumoured to be "episode 3" of the 2011 series of Doctor Who.

Sapphire & Who?

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:05 PM PDT

Did Steven Moffat watch Sapphire & Steel prior to planning his first series in charge of Doctor Who and writing The Eleventh Hour – or did certain elements lodge in his head back in 1979 when the ITV fantasy adventure series started?

Doctor Who - The Eleventh Hour features plot similarities with Sapphire & Steel's first episodeKey elements of Doctor Who in 2010 include more than one mysterious house, a young girl with apparently no parents living alone in her bedroom, a crack in the universe situated within the house and of course, the timey-wimey characteristics of the Doctor himself, and a famous rhyme used to conclude the story.

So why not cast an eye over this precis for the first episode of Sapphire & Steel (created by PJ Hammond, writer of Torchwood's 2006 story Small Worlds and the 2008 episode From Out of the Rain, as well as Big Finish adventure Paradise 5):

"The first story really set the tone for the next five -there were six in all- whilst Robert Jardine is doing his homework every clock in the house stops ticking. Robert runs upstairs to tell his parents only to find his young sister alone in her bedroom, mother and father it would appear, have vanished. Enter two strangers, Sapphire, a beautifully elegant woman with a pleasing nature and the ability to turn back time for a few seconds -and Steel, like his name suggests, cold and hard and with an aptitude to offend with his no-nonsense unemotional approach to work.

"Together and with the help of the children the two time agents work out that the house is the focal point for a tear in time itself, the trigger being an old nursery rhyme 'Ring-a Ring-a Roses' (from the time of the Black Plague), recited by the young girl, Helen".

Doctor Who - The Eleventh Hour features plot similarities with Sapphire & Steel's first episodeYoungster(s) left alone. Empty house. Disappeared parents. Tear in time. An old folk rhyme to resolve things.

So – Amelia Pond and her mysteriously empty (too big) home, the crack throughout time and space and the famous "something old, something new" rhyme that is something of a tradition for weddings across the western world.

It's all there! Interestingly, Sapphire & Steel – which starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum as the titular lead characters – was created by PJ Hammond after a night spent in a haunted house. It's certainly a great source to draw inspiration from, too, and while the visual effects don't stand up well in today's TV drama environment, the storylines of each episode are certainly enough to cause a few noghtmares.

Doctor Who US Whirlwind

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 06:48 PM PDT

Doctor Who has come to an end on BBC America with The Big Bang bringing the series to a close last Saturday night.

Thanks to BBC America, here's the link to the final Doctor Who Confidential of the season, which can be viewed on the BBCA Doctor Who mini-site.

Doctor Who Confidential – Episode 13 is a 15-minute behind-the-scenes look at the season finale. This week's Confidential also includes footage shot during Matt and Karen's whirlwind press tour and fan screening in NYC!

BBC America – despite some oddly placed gaps in the series – have given Doctor Who its best home on US television. Their promotion of the most recent series has been superb, and reaction has been appropriately favourable.

Well done BBC America!

Dalek Plans to Capture Vintage Aircraft Revealed!

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 05:52 PM PDT

News is reaching Kasterborous of further diabolical designs by the dastardly Daleks. Not content with invading village fetes,  the sociopaths from Skaro are now planning a show of force at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Presumably they're still miffed at being whupped by laser-toting Spitfires, and are planning to wreak their inimitable havoc on historic aircraft and visitors to the Somerset attraction. The assault is planned for the 7th and 8th of August.

Daleks at Fleet Air Arm Museum Our intel indicates that the alliance formed between alien races in order to incarcerate the Doctor may still be holding – it appears that the Daleks will be supported by Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and Ice Warriors.

Should visitors to the Museum survive an encounter with the Daleks, they may just get the chance to get their photo taken under the legendary Concorde with the aforementioned aliens, along with Davros and Miss Hartigan. We've also been advised that K9 voice artiste and bear impersonator John Leeson will be on hand, alongside former wrinkly wheelchair user David Gooderson.  Our sources seem quite adamant about Miss Hartigan's involvement, but at this time we are unable to confirm whether M&S aficionado Dervla Kirwan will be hypnotising unwitting punters with her sultry tones.

Should you wish to form a resistance movement, you can find full details of the Dalek invasion here, and there's also a scary flyer to be distributed to the people.

Your intrepid Kasterborous correspondent will make every effort to join the fight, and will report in due course, should he survive. Chocks away, and tally-ho!

Briggs On Stage

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:39 PM PDT

Exec producer Nick Briggs will be away from the Big Finish office (but never out of touch - with email, you're never alone!) and in Nottingham for the next three weeks. Nick will be working for the Classic Thriller Season at the Theatre Royal Nottingham. He is directing the first play, Murder With Love (by Francis Durbridge) and starring in the second play, Murdered To Death, playing the aptly named Inspector Pratt.

Big Finish studio genius, sound designer and composer Toby Robinson has composed the music for both these productions, and the casts feature other actors you'll recognize from BF cast lists down the ages. In no particular order, Sam Clemens (Blue Forgotten Planet, Holmes and the Ripper), Adrian Lloyd-James (Dalek Empire), Jo Castleton (Brotherhood of the Daleks, The Marian Conspiracy), Karen Henson (Dalek War, The Apocalypse Element) and Patric Kearns (Curse of the Daleks). So, autograph hunters, head for that stage door now!

'The plays are done in the old tradition of weekly rep,' says Nick. 'And this season has been going for twenty-two years now, under the stewardship of the indomitable Colin McIntyre. The local audience has been so loyal to us over the years; loving the potential for cock-ups with such a short rehearsal period as much as they love the twists and turns of the thrillers.

'I've played Sherlock Holmes there for the past two years, but this year it's a complete change,' Briggs notes. 'Far from being the most brilliant detective in history... I'm playing a man who is completely without a clue. In fact, he's such an idiot, he actually manages to shoot a policeman when reconstructing a murder. He's kind of an English version of Inspector Clouseau.'

Murder With Love runs from Monday 2nd until Saturday 7th August.

Murdered To Death runs from Monday 9th until Saturday 14th August.

Moaner!

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:17 AM PDT

It's always tempting to moan when you're snowed under with work. But then I remind myself of several things. I'm doing a job that I love unreservedly. So, Briggs, stop whining about the fact that you were directing Colin Baker for six days when you were behind on your writing tasks! First off, it was a joy to spend that time with Colin and the great guest casts we got (no spoilers!) and our lovely studio man, Toby Robinson. And secondly, those writing tasks aren't that far behind. And anyway, they're not a chore! They're Doctor Blinkin' Who, after all! It's my favourite thing.

And it's when I remember that, that I suddenly have a flurry of brain activity that results in script progress... when I remember that my 'job' is to think up new and exciting ways for the Doctor to have adventures and defeat his foes. That's not a chore, it's a privilege. And then I remember how totally understanding my wife is about it (she's one in a million) and how lucky I am to have such a great little boy for a son. Okay, okay, no need to reach for the sick bucket! This is just my lucky life. It wasn't always this way, so I've decided to enjoy it while I can.

And then, to top it all, I find out that Frazer Hines has been secretly suffering with cancer for years and that he's finally beaten it. I can't tell you how happy I am for him. I can have a go, though... I'm incredibly happy. I felt elated when I read that news. And I wrote and told him so. That kind of suffering really puts any silly moans about workload into perspective, doesn't it?

So even though this isn't January 1st, I just wanted to make a public statement that there will be no more moaning from me about my 'job'. All I have to do is remember exactly what my job is and how joyous I really find it. So there.

And by the way, if you really want to see me enjoying myself, come to the Theatre Royal Nottingham in a couple of weeks' time and see me playing Inspector Pratt in 'Murdered To Death', a comedy murder thriller. Which reminds me, alongside writing a story for the Seventh Doctor, some scripts for the Fourth Doctor, a series for Charley Pollard and a whole new Doctor Who series for... (ah, that would be telling), I've got some lines to learn!

So, I'll be back in the office in three weeks' time. And then there'll be another podcast to do. I'm rather looking forward to that.

Good Lorrrrrrrd!

Dark Shadows Update

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 02:08 AM PDT

Big Finish is back from Los Angeles and this year's Dark Shadows Festival, which gathered over a dozen actors from the show, including Jonathan Frid and David Selby, for its annual weekend-long celebration. The audio dramas were the subject of two stage panels, the first of which marked the convention debut of Andrew Collins, who plays vampire Barnabas in the new stories.

Producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and Stuart Manning discussed the range and future plans, alongside actress Ursula Burton (Susan Griffin), writers Eric Wallace and Debbie Smith and regular director Darren Gross. Meanwhile, a rare promotional poster for The Night Whispers was a hit at the collectibles auction, raising over $200 for charity.

Thanks to everyone who visited the Big Finish table and supported the range. The new full-cast mini-series Kingdom of the Dead is out now, featuring a mammoth cast, including David Selby, Lara Parker, John Karlen, Jerry Lacy, Kathryn Leigh Scott and David Warner. The box set is available on CD and download. Apologies for the delay to the appearance of the download editon to buy; it's available o the site now. Also just released is Dark Shadows: Music from the Audio Dramas, collecting the best of Nigel Fairs' scores from the CDs.

The next Dark Shadows release is The Doll House, starring Marie Wallace and Terry Crawford, exploring the fate of the doomed Collins bride Jenny. The story is in the final stages of post production and will now be released in August.

The Fifth Doctor and Friends

Posted: 18 Jul 2010 09:55 PM PDT

It's been a wait of 26 years, but at last the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa are back together this month in Cobwebs, a four part audio story by Jonathan Morris. And there's more to come in The Whispering Forest and The Cradle of the Snake.
Many people have asked whether this will be a one-off reunion, or whether there are plans for more. We're delighted to reveal that the dream team will be back together in a new run of stories to be released in 2011, as Peter, Janet, Mark and Sarah have committed to a run of new recordings later this year.
