Posted: 30 Jul 2010 03:34 PM PDT Having arrived home from Bath at 10pm on Christmas Eve before wrapping my presents I just wanted to say a very Happy Christmas to anyone who is mad enough to want to log on to my blog over the Christmas period! When I say "mad" - it is a flattering 'madness' that you should even think about me at Christmas! I have been panto driven for the last two weeks having gone straight from Noises Off, via Chicago, into rehearsals for Jack and the Beanstalk - but I wanted to be sure to thank you all for your support and interest over the last few years and a special thank you to the wonderful, uncomplaining and diligent Rob Cope for keeping this website so informative and interesting even though I am not always that good at keeping him informed. To Rob and to all of you - thanks and have a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS! Come and see me in Bath until the 25th January if you have the chance - it is a fun panto and everyone in it is both good and lovely! More after Christmas - I promise!!! Colin
Demon Quest 1: Relics of Time - Details Posted: 30 Jul 2010 01:59 PM PDT The BBC Audiobook production comes in five parts and is a sequel to Hornet's News released last year. Tom Baker reprises the role of the Fourth Doctor and is joined once more by Richard Franklin and Susan Jameson, reprising their roles as Mike Yates and Mrs. Wibbsey respectively. The Doctor returns to Nest Cottage but lands in trouble when a key component from the TARDIS disappears. Mrs. Wibbsey is inadvertently responsible, but all she can offer in recompense is a bag containing four curious objects. It seems that each one is a clue, and the beginning of a chase through Time. In ancient Sussex they are apprehended by primitive tribesfolk, and mistaken for wizards. Can the revered goddess Wibbsentia get them out of hot water? Who is the fearful wizard in the neighbouring village, and why is the countryside littered with bodies? The Doctor and Mrs Wibbsey are about to discover that all is not right with history. The series also features Nigel Anthony as the Wizard and Rupert Holliday Evans and Kate Sachs as the Warriors with with Steven Pacey, Jan Francis, Richard Coyle, Finty Williams and Rowena Cooper. The series is written by Paul Magrs and the first part is released in the UK on 2nd September and in the US on November 16.

Posted: 30 Jul 2010 08:12 AM PDT Regular readers will know how much we like the quirky Doctor Who stuff, not to mention variations on the theme tune – so what better than a world music trio performing the legendary theme tune? This appeared on Australian music quiz show Spicks and Specks (think Never Mind the Buzzcocks) this week, and features a steel string acoustic guitar, a cello – and a didgeridoo! Get ready for Manta's interpretation of the Doctor Who theme tune! It's certainly a memorable rendition of Ron Grainer's classic tune, and while it is a million miles away from the Delia Derbyshire arrangement we all love, it's also quite different from the current incarnation of the tune. Now of course there is very little chance of the tune heralding a new adventure in this form – but wouldn't it be great to feature this superb trio in the show somehow? Manta are Russell Smith, Ashley Naylor and Theo Chen – and they're a signed act! To find out more, check out Manta's website at www.mantatrio.com. (Many thanks to Bridget!)

Posted: 30 Jul 2010 01:33 AM PDT Fantasy writer and contributor to Doctor Who's 2011 series 6 (season 32) Neil Gaiman reports on Twitter that he has submitted yet another draft of his headlining script writing turn on the show.
Gaiman is one of several big name writers to have contributed to Steven Moffat's era of Doctor Who. The 2010 series saw Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley and of course Vincent and the Doctor) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly and Amy's Choice) trying their hand for the first time at the science fantasy realm of the Doctor – to pretty impressive results. Neil Gaiman (whose successful works include Stardust, Neverwhere, Sandman and of course popular children's title The Graveyard Book) should have no problem thrilling viewers. But just in case, let's say a prayer. Twitter users can keep up to date with Neil Gaiman's Twitter account by following @NeilHimself. Moffat Writing 5 Episodes in 2011 Posted: 29 Jul 2010 08:08 PM PDT Steven Moffat spoke with Den of Geek this week, regarding the success of the first episode of Sherlock and of course, Doctor Who.
You know what – it is extraordinary. I think it is very easy to forget what Moffat has achived. In his first year as Doctor Who chief writer and Executive Producer has brought renewed the show, brougt in a new star and companions, a whole new atmosphere, AND brought a second show to life. Russell T Davies might have done something similar with Torchwood, but his first series of Doctor Who was in March 2005; Torchwood began in late 2006, nearly 18 months later…

Posted: 29 Jul 2010 06:55 PM PDT The Companion Chronicles have grown up over the last few years. At their humble beginnings, they were old companions doing impressions of the Doctor that they were teamed up with (specifically Doctors 1 to 4). As the range has proved so successful and popular, the bar has been raised so that any of the Doctor's companions can now be involved. And the more this world has grown the bigger and better the stories have become.
This reviewer will not hide away from the fact that he never "clicked" with Charley, finding that her upper class whinnying gave the Eighth Doctor airs and graces himself when he needed to be more grounded (which he later got with Lucy Millar). However, this is a fantastic performance by actress India Fisher who, when placed on her own, proves herself worthy of TARDIS travels. She comes across as intelligent, strong-minded and resourceful which is exactly what the Doctor looks for in a friend. David Ballie returns for another audio outing as the Toymaker (his last was The Nightmare Fair with Colin Baker) and he's equally brilliant as the sinister and elusive villain of the piece. The plot itself revolves around Charley trying to escape from one of the Toymaker's games whilst also trying to help the Doctor. And where is our favourite Time Lord? Nothing will be spoiled for you in this review but let's just say that India Fisher voices the Doctor without having to do an impression of Paul McGann (who is one of the hardest Doctor's to impersonate). Solitaire is recommended listening, a solid play with a simple plot that encircles the listener and rewards them with varying twists and turns. If you haven't listened to the series before, start here. Solitaire is available on CD and download at www.bigfinish.com.

Sherlock Holmes and The Freeman Promulgation Posted: 29 Jul 2010 05:19 PM PDT
Before turning to those moral and mental aspects of the matter which present the greatest difficulties, let the inquirer begin by mastering more elementary problems. Mr Freeman, who is in possession of the role of Dr. John Watson for Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' Sherlock, has neither the time nor the inclination for Doctor Who!
Mr. Freeman, of The Office, then eliminated the impossible, leaving the truth, no matter how improbable it was, remaining;
Mr. Freeman here is displaying a rare skill; to reason backwards. There must be one in fifty who possess such analytical skill. The Thespian can next be seen practising his considerable art in Sherlock 'The Blind Banker' in a performance for BBC One on Sunday at 8:30pm, prompt. (via Digital Spy)
