Time Leech Scripts!

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 10:01 AM PDT

Better late than never! As part of the Time Leech project – and to clear the boards for the upcoming Ghost Train (more on that later!) we're publishing the final draft of the scripts used by Justin Abbot, Colin Brockhurst and Rick Lundeed to illustrate and letter the strips.

Doctor Who - The Time Leech! The Time Leech arc was scripted by Christian Cawley, from a story by Christian and Brian A. Terranova. Part one was also edited by former Doctor Who Magazine editor John Freeman.

Long-term readers and purchasers of Vworp Vworp! #1 will know that Time Leech part 1 appeared in the stellar pro/fanzine earlier this year. (Incidentally I was made up to see a copy of Vworp Vworp! #1 in the Middlesbrough branch of Forbidden Planet last week; 5 copies bought in, 4 sold!)

Time Leech continued on Kasterborous with the space-bound sci-fi horror story Hellstar before returning to earth with Time Bomb, the story in which the Doctor discovered the truth about Ruth and the Time Leech while preventing an army of Daleks from conquering Earth history!

(If you think that sounds good, you should have seen the episodes we didn't write!)

So – to the scripts! These are the final versions for each instalment, and feature some on-screen markup/highlighting. (Scripts are in PDF version; suitable reader required.)

  1. Time Leech
  2. Hellstar
  3. Time Bomb

As promised above, more on Ghost Train. Originally conceived as an entry into the Big Finish audio competition recently (see here for the slightly flat entry), it has been comprehensively re-imagined and is currently in development for our next quest to find a comic strip illustrator!

And that really is as much as I can say for now – in the meantime, enjoy the scripts in any way you can.

Sinbad vs Doctor Who

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 06:42 AM PDT

Sinbad the Sailor, Sky1's new £2 million an episode 13-part spectacular will go head to head with the brand new series of Doctor Who in Autumn 2011.

The show, which is set in modern times in Basra (which sounds awful) and produced by the team behind Primeval, has yet to start shooting but already The Sun have pitched a ratings war between the two shows despite Sky1 rarely breaking through the one viewer one million viewer mark.

TV bosses, paper talk for people what run the telly, have already been quoted as saying they're poised to launch a nationwide hunt to find a young, sexy unknown to play the titular character. Possibly because they don't want you ignoring their two million pound investment by staring at the  lead actors unsightly facial wart.

None faceless TV Boss, Sky1's Controller Stuart Murphy,  said:

"It is by far our biggest show next year.

"Doctor Who is aimed at one type of family – our show will be for a younger, cooler family who like sexy, cool heroes."

Eager to drop its reputation as a holding pen for American imports Sinbad the Sailor is part of a grander scheme by the network to invest in more home grown drama and comedies.

The channel has reputedly order more of SAS-a-thon Strike Back in a bid to show it too can produce drama if not like the BBC, then a bit like ITV 1's Ultimate Force.

However, the network has just landed a deal that sees them retain full rights to show new shows by HBO, including future episodes of programes like Big Love and Entourage when there existing deals with other networks expire.

Sinbad the Sailor has been adapted several times before including the frankly hard to top Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor.

The seven great voyages of Sinbad are set in Basrah and are told by Sinbad to a pauper also called Sinbad, who was overheard questioning Allah about his toil and strife in and amongst the care free rich.

Sinbad (thats the sailor, not the whiny pauper) tells his poorer friend that he too was once poor and goes on to recount tales including: taking refuge on a whale he believed to be an island, trapped by giant snakes that can swallow a man whole and being shipwrecked countless times.

Ssshh… Christmas Special Spoilers

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 05:48 AM PDT

How's everyone coping then? The newest series of Doctor Who has finished and now we wait five months until Christmas Day for some more Doctor Who-y goodness.

And of course while we're waiting, news and titbits about the 2010 Christmas Special (Matt and Karen's first together! The first special without Tennant!) are starting to leak out.

If you're spoiler phobic and want to know no details, please look away…….now.

According to tardisspoilers.blogspot, Michael Gambon's character will be called Kazran. His character is apparently intended to have multiple encounters with the Doctor over his lifetime via a wibbly wobbly timey wimey affair much like Steven Moffat's The Girl in the Fireplace. The special will have a Victorian setting which the Doctor visits

We will also see Karzan at various stages over his life, although whether this is through flashbacks or through the Doctor's travels we don't know. The special is also said to be loosely based on A Christmas Carol.

Where Have You Been?

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 04:14 AM PDT

New or recent readers of Kasterborous.com may not be aware that we've been going for over 5 years; our first Doctor Who article was published in October 2004, with an official launch in January 2005.

It all began with the first post, Kasterborous' first Doctor Who post, in which we recalled Paul McGann's very brief stint as the Doctor in the 1996 TV movie.

Over the years, we've featured many news items – to the point where we're now the most updated Doctor Who news resource on the web – and in that time there have been a few that I've really enjoyed writing. I think the one I enjoyed the most was my tribute to Tom Baker's fourth incarnation of our favourite Time Lord. Initially, it had been intended to be accompanied by some of Anthony Dry's wonderful artwork, but sadly this was not to be due to deadlines.

More recently on Kasterborous, we've been permitting comments on all posts, something that has been a great enabler of conversaton. One post that instigated some considerable discussion (and positive general reaction) was the post Geroni-meh! in which contributor Matt Nida expressed his disappointment with the most recent series of Doctor Who.

While we on the topic of great posts – this article about how Doctor Who is not just for kids popped up on Den of Geek recently. Thought-provoking is the term; perhaps Doctor Who in 2010 is better than we older fans think it is?

In amongst the news, reviews, interviews and opinion pieces on Kasterborous, we've also had time to offer help to our readers – with the worldwide release of the new Doctor Who games for PC, it turned out that there was no Mac option! Contributor Patrick Riley did a sterling job of pulling together many legal sources to download the game from, as well as attempting to clear up the confusion as to why the Mac version is UK only.

With 3-10 new articles today (be they news, opinions, interviews or reviews) it is easily to get lost in a sea of titles – however we like a little bit of wordplay here on Kasterborous, and it is probably fair to say that our most pun-tastic article title is Who Lotta Love in which Brian A. Terranova recalls the various Doctor Who-themed entries into the pop charts (or not, as the case may be with some of them!)

To finish, just a quick note about something that has recently appeared on Kasterborous – an interview with founder and popular illustrator Anthony Dry. You've seen his work on DVD box sets, in Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures, and you should certainly see what he has to say on the matter of merchandise design.

No Licence Fee, No Doctor Who

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 07:07 PM PDT

Right-wing think tank the Adam Smith Institute have said that the television licence fee should be scrapped – to be replaced by a "voluntary subscription service" that would provide revenue for popular BBC programming such as Doctor Who.

It is yet another in a series of focussed attacks on the BBC from right-wing media and now so-called think tanks. And it is around now that we say: you've gone too far.

It is yet another in a series of focussed attacks on the BBC from right-wing media and now so-called think tanks. And it is around now that we say: you've gone too far.

Rattling sabres from the ivory tower of News International is one thing; making noises in Whitehall to appease an all-too powerful power junkie with the power of life and death over showbusiness careers is another. Claiming the unique authority of a think tank – a body that is effectely a Quango – is nothing short of a fully fledged attack.

For those of you poisoned by the popular media's habit of obfuscation, the Adam Smith Institute were policy advisers to the Thatcher government in the 1980s; their contribution to Britain's industrial decline (as opposed to managed restructuring) is recorded in history.

The licence fee is unpopular – fair enough, as it is compulsory for anyone owning a TV – yet for 32p per day it provides access to 2 terrestrial channels, 4 digital, 5 terrestrial radio stations, a fuirther 4 digital stations, plus it funds the BBC's remarkable website and iPlayer. But what are the alternatives?

Adam Pettie of The Telegraph, reckons that a subscription model will be damaging for the BBC's most unique output.

"The good thing about the licence fee is that, because it is collected from everyone, it doesn't have to be populist," says Pettie.

"The main danger of the subscription model is that it is under pressure to provide lots of different packages – that could mean the loss of lucrative things like Doctor Who and things on BBC Four, Radio 3 and Radio 4," he adds.

However there is a valid aspect to Adam Smith Institute's argument – the licence fee has become outdated in its current form, with more and more TV being consumed online via phones, PCs and tablets.

So – should the licence fee be scrapped? What would be the future for Doctor Who?

Gold-en Sounds

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 05:34 PM PDT

MusicFromTheMovies.com have been singing the praises of Who composer/arranger/all round genius Murray Gold after the stellar reception for the Doctor Who Proms 2010.

The 2nd Doctor Who Prom gave fans the treat of hearing Gold's various themes performed immaculately by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and ably conducted by Ben Foster (Doctor Who, Torchwood) and also to see the stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvil in the flesh.

Commenting on the spectacle they said;

"Doctor Who is something very special, and deserves nothing less than a blockbuster presentation. And that's exactly what the promenaders got in this 2 ¼ hour spectacular. This fusion of two of the BBC's biggest brands was… ahem, out of this world."

Gold was praised for just how well his themes convade Steven Moffat's intentions of creating a 'fairtale'.

His medley "Liz, Lizards, Vampires and Vincent" was singled out for showing just how versatile Gold is;

"If ever there was proof that scoring this show is the best job in the world, just listen to the opportunities that it presents the composer. Different countries, different time periods and different genres all mean that no two shows are the same, and no two scores tread the same ground."

The event also saw Matt Smith performing as the Doctor enlisting the help of a youngster to defuse a 'timey-wimey explodey-wodey' gizmo.

To cap the evening the Orchestra played out Gold's reinterpreatation of Ron Grainer's classic Who Theme whose reception was captured by the article;

"As the final notes faded away the sound of the rapturous audience drowned out anything that could have been thrown at them. Standing ovations, cries of joy and whoops of admiration were showered on Murray, Ben, Yamit, Mark, Matt, Karen and Arthur, who must have felt like they were on top of the world."

The Doctor Who Prom 2010 will be broadcast on BBC Three later this month. You can pre-order Murray Gold's sterling work on last years specials, including Vale Decem ("Farewell Ten"), for just £11.99 at Amazon.

Bernice Summerfield: Animated Adventure

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 11:48 AM PDT

Big Finish have announced the an online adventure featuring Bernice Summerfield will be available from September.

Bernice Summerfield or Benny, is a character originally created by author Paul Cornell as a new companion of the Seventh Doctor in Virgin Publishing's range of original full-length Doctor Who novels. Since 1998 Big Finish Productions have been producing officially licensed audio dramas starring the character.

The latest adventure, Dead and Buried, is a 10-minute CGI animated adventure that will be available to view absolutely free of charge. Lisa Bowerman is back playing Benny, who is returning to her roots as an archaeologist – although it isn't long before she's being pursued through the ruins of an alien world by a deadly adversary.

Dead and Buried is animated by Alex Mallinson, who has been working on the project for months and says
I've created animated trailers for Cyberman and Dalek Empire in the past but this is a much more complicated prospect. John Ainsworth and Eddie Robson have
written a cracking yarn which is proving a joy and a challenge to animate. It's taken weeks of patient construction, animation, rendering and compositing but it doesn't truly spring to life until Matthew Cochrane's evocative sound design is added. However it's still proven more work than any of us imagined, which is why Benny Series 11 has been delayed a month. I hope this will make up for it!

There's a glimpse of what's to come in the teaser trailer, available at the Big Finish website.

The final animation will be available in September, completely free and will lead into the events of Bernice Summerfield 11.1 Resurrecting the Past.

Torchwood: “Digital Weapon”?

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 07:50 AM PDT

We at Kasterborous love a bit of 'chin stroking' about our TV crushes but Pop Matters have out done us.

Tochwood comic featuring story by John BarrowmanIn celebrating the launch of Torchwood #1 at Comic Con 2010 (featuring The Selkie, a story penned by John and Carole E. Barrowman and Broken by Script Editor Gary Russell) the website has rather sickeningly called John Barrowman:  'The Face That Launched a Thousand Stories'

Citing Russell T. Davies' quote to Entertainment Weekly that other mediums were the 'digital weaponary' of Torchwood, as it shifted and changed to meet storytelling demands, the website has made the actors association and love of the role of (Group) Captain Jack the bridge between old fans and new ones, starving for their first fix of Torchwood, commenting:

"They clearly identify and link actor with character. Above the title and stern-looking illustration of Captain Jack is the actor's name. The advert reports "John Barrowman brings you Torchwood the Official Comic." The line is accurate — the "Selkie" story comes from John and Carole Barrowman — but the implication is much stronger.

"The advert visually claims that Torchwood = Captain Jack, and Captain Jack = John Barrowman. Ergo, the advertisement implies, Torchwood equals Barrowman."

It is a compelling argument; you only have to look at TV of yesteryear to see a slew of stars associated with a certain show; Mr. T, Lou Ferrigno, Peter Faulk etc.  Where it falls down is in its hyperbole; take the following:

"With the highly publicized Torchwood #1, Captain Jack becomes more marketable as a hero and an image directed toward a specific comic book audience who may or may not have discovered Torchwood via another medium."

"Why anyone would invest in an entire run of writing, inking and printing a comic book solely to test 'how much more of a hero can we make him?"

Seems a little odd.

To use their maths: comic book + lead character = instant hero. Its a little reductive to say that comics naturally breed heroes.

True, an actor penned comic book does bridge the assiociation between show and other spin-offs but who would be that  'specific comic book audience'  Well they'd be Torchwood fans.  Would you as a non-Torchwood/Barrowman fan pick up a comic 'written by the man who hosts Tonight's the Night' ?

Torchwood #1 is released on 10 August and is a timely reminder of what the show was and a holding gap for fans eagerly awaiting the new series next Summer.

Anthony Dry Interviewed

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 05:03 AM PDT

Kasterborous.com began life as a collaboration between writer Christian Cawley and web designer and illustrator Anthony Dry back in 2004. As the site grew and Anthony's art became more well known, he found he was in demand as a Doctor Who illustrator; his work has appeared in Doctor Who Magazine and in the Doctor Who DVD boxsets since 2005.

Good news is, he's just submitted a sketch for approval for the Series 5 box set and has also completed "two illustrations for The Brilliant Book of Doctor Who – that's out towards the end of the year and two promo single covers artwork for Iron Maiden. It's been a crazy month or so."

"…my illustration is more graphic illustration because I treat the brief like graphic design…"

When Kasterborous started Ant was a lowly web designer, a job he found himself in after years of study. "I spent seven years of study from 92-2000 with a year break in-between. The first course was a foundation course, something thats really necessary in grounding your skills and finding a path you are interested in.

"The second was a HND in packaging design, but when I came home to find work, there was none, so I had to take a year out and assess my options. I managed to sneak onto the BA Hons Graphics course at Liverpool John Moores University and did what I should have done a few years earlier, got into graphic design.

This seems to have been the moment of realisation for Anthony who has become one of the most admired Doctor Who illustrators working today, something he attributes to his grounding in graphic design.

"I'd say my illustration is more graphic illustration because I treat the brief like graphic design rather than just a straight up illustration. "

All of this has come from a long standing interest in art which naturally stretches back to when Anthony was a young boy. "I spent a lot of time drawing when I was a kid, especially drawing Doctor Who stuff. I was okay at copying pictures but never really developed my drawing skills into anything concrete, but as I've always had an eye for commercial design I pursued Graphic Arts."

As is the case for many creative professionals, early in his career Anthony found himself in a job that promised much but delivered little. "The web was just taking off as a visual medium, rather than just simple pages of data, when I managed to swing a job just outside of Manchester. It was a nightmare! First off, on my first day I was looking for the company building, and this guy came out of a terraced house and called me in. The job was in his house!"

Kasterborous was launched after Anthony and I got talking in the old Outpost Gallifrey forum. As a creative outlet for both of us, it lead to Ant being noticed as an illustrator with a pretty unique approach, something that lead to freelance work. With early Doctor Who images on Kasterborous quickly evolving from striking monolithic images into detailed illustrations from the school of Chris Achilleos/Frank Bellamy, I imaged that reaction to  his work must have come as a surprise.  "I wouldn't say it came as a surprise as such because I just had a brainwave one night that I should try and bring that kind of work back but with a modern twist.

"I'd been doing those little pop art illustrations for Kasterborous so we wouldn't upset the BBC for using images, but eventually it wore me out doing them 2 or 3 times a week. Once I'd taken that pressure off and decided to experiment a bit I had the idea of bringing back a retro style but for the new series."

The FOUR Doctors at last!

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 12:10 AM PDT

Ok, OK! so it's not a TV episode, but it's something I've been wanting after realising we've had every other combination of numbers of Doctors up to five, but not four. I would have written earlier about this but there was one FACT that was unclear. Yes it's free to subscribers but! which Doctor Who ranges would be included? and as far as I can make out it's the Monthly Doctor Who Range subscribers who get this little gem in their fists.

Big Finish has done this on a regular basis last year saw the release "An Earthly Child" a 8th Doctor and Susan tale, but unlike that release, Big Finish has said as of going to press that this adventure would never be released other than to Subscribers. Now I see three points here 1.) Big Finish would make an absolute wad of cash if they eventually released this for general sale. 2.) That they must make enough that they can "AFFORD" to do this, but in fact this is very nice present to their subscribers if it remains so. 3.) Internet piracy, maybe at some point this is going to end up on a torrent site. Great for those who don't want to subscribe but bad for Big Finish, as they may havelawyers but I doubt they have the clout of the BIG Music labels, and I personally would rather see the money going into Big Finish's pockets because this is quiteliterately how future productions are funded.

Bernice Summerfield - The Big News

Posted: 01 Aug 2010 03:50 AM PDT

We're delighted to announce that September 2010 sees the online launch of Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried, a 10-minute CGI animated adventure that will be available to view absolutely free of charge.

Lisa Bowerman is back as Benny, who is returning to her roots as an archaeologist – although it isn't long before she's being pursued through the ruins of an alien world by a deadly adversary.

Dead and Buried is animated by Alex Mallinson, who has been working on the project for months.

"I've created animated trailers for Cyberman and Dalek Empire in the past but this is a much more complicated prospect," he says. "John Ainsworth and Eddie Robson have written a cracking yarn which is proving a joy and a challenge to animate.

"It's taken weeks of patient construction, animation, rendering and compositing but it doesn't truly spring to life until Matthew Cochrane's evocative sound design is added. However it's still proven more work than any of us imagined, which is why Benny Series 11 has been delayed a month. I hope this will make up for it!"

There's a glimpse of what's to come in the teaser trailer, available here. The final animation will be available in September, completely free and will lead into the events of Bernice Summerfield 11.1 Resurrecting the Past.

Season 11 of Benny is available for pre-order now.
