Chasing Amy

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 07:34 AM PDT

Now that she's a fully established part of the "Who-niverse", Karen Gillan has been appearing all over the news in any article that the press can get their hands on.

Doctor Who companion Karen GillanUnfortunately, rather than something that is completely news worthy, the articles are mainly "Heat" style reports. Still, it's always nice to see a picture of Karen to brighten up your day.

The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph (online) both snapped Karen dressed in a slinky dress and black coat headed out for a night out on the town with a friend, the Mail online kindly commented:

"You might think that the TARDIS had landed in Japan and she had disguised herself as a geisha girl.

"The very white make-up and slash of bright red lipstick made her look like one of the traditional female entertainers."

The News of the World website continues this story of Karen's night out by focusing on the after effects of the actress having a few drinks. One unflattering picture and a bit of stirring later:

"DALEKTABLE Doctor Who sidekick Karen Gillan slumps over a mystery fella after getting a bit tardissed in the pub."

Whilst celebrities are an unfortunate target for the press, you get the feeling that these articles take things just a little too far.

Meanwhile, www.DailyStar.co.uk reported on Karen's costume change whilst she was hosting the Doctor Who themed BBC Proms this year due to the fact that a skirt she was wearing caused some problems as she moved around. The article even called the change "her own Doctor Who style regeneration".

Why they don't make these articles front page news we'll never know…

The Doctor Loses?

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 04:59 AM PDT

Den of Geek has run an article regarding the 2010 series finale of Doctor Who, The Big Bang. Louisa Mellor has written that the finale was full of themes of loss and revival and was not for kids.

The focus point of the piece is that:

"The series was all about death. Or to be more specific and fittingly for the show, death's companion: loss."

This is backed up by the fact that Amy loses Rory a number of times in the season, once during Amy's Choice, once during Cold Blood and again during The Pandorica Opens. The article even talks about the eventual goodbye that Amy and Rory are going to have to say to the Doctor one day:

"Just how many times does Amy lose Rory in season five? Once in a dream world, once in an underground cave, once in Stonehenge some time AD, once, so she momentarily thinks, in the London Blitz during his two-thousand-year vigil over her sci-fi iron lung.

"And surely there's one to come…in their future, after they too have said toodle-pip to the Doctor and been replaced by whichever nubile lovely is interstellar hitchhiking that week."

One of the biggest things that can separate Doctor Who fans is interpretation. For example, there are lots of areas within the show that fans argue about in terms of whether something is "canon" or not. Whether the Virgin New Adventures are set in this universe or a pocket one. Whether Scream of the Shalka ever really happened (it did, but in a side step universe-so there!). But what can always be said of the show is that if it has an overall theme, it is one of "life goes on and isn't that brilliant".

But as Ood Sigma remarks just before the Tenth Doctor regenerates, "This song is ending, but the story never ends".

Yes, there's loss. If you watch any Doctor Who serial, someone always ends up kicking the bucket. The Doctor frequently loses friends and loved ones, to the point that when talking about it with Wilf in The End of Time, he nearly starts crying. But as Ood Sigma remarks just before the Tenth Doctor regenerates, "This song is ending, but the story never ends". This actually gives the Doctor the strength he needs to get into the TARDIS and complete the process. The clinging thought in his last moments that there's always a reason to carry on.

The 2010 series of Doctor Who carries this overall "mission statement" off with a wonderful new breath of life where the eleventh Doctor gains more friends to travel with, grows closer to River Song and by the end of the series, still has the same people with him in the TARDIS, bear in mind that this is something that the tenth Doctor never managed to do.

If anything, just as the Tenth Doctor got past a lot of the guilt that the Ninth Doctor had carried from the Time War, the Eleventh Doctor has resolved to "love again" and throw caution to the wind rather than travelling alone like his predecessor.

The article at Den of Geek also comments that the reason The Big Bang isn't for children not because of content but more because the themes of loss would be better understood by adults. This in itself is true, but as everyone knows when one door closes, another one opens.

And that's exactly why The Big Bang and the whole of the 2010 series is perfectly balanced for children to watch. It shows us that life goes on and whenever you're at your lowest point there's always something to bring you back up again.

Den of Geek's article isn't wrong as such; it's an opinion. But at the same time even though we as the audience know that nothing in the world of Doctor Who ever stays the same, there's always a new delight around the corner to keep a smile on our faces whatever age we are.

Barrowman Loses the Plot

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 02:11 AM PDT

Has Torchwood star John Barrowman lost the plot? Has the prospect of international TV stardom in Torchwood Series 4 gone to his head?

Torchwood's John BarrowmanWhat else is the explanation to his bizarre statement, in response to a question as to who should play him in a movie of his life.

"I would like to think Jake Gyllenhaal would be a good choice. It's too obvious to say Tom Cruise because people say we look alike."

To say this is diva-like behaviour is putting it mildly. Naturally as a presenter, actor, singer and dancer, John Barrowman is prone to moments of great self-obsession.

But who in their right minds would watch a movie about John Barrowman's life, nevermind make one?

Barrowman has also revealed that he would like to play a sibling of Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise in a movie together.

"I'd love to play Tom Cruise's brother in a movie. His younger brother, obviously!"

As things stand, Barrowman's head hasn't yet exploded, so you can still catch him in Tonight's The Night on Saturday evenings, while Torchwood Series 4 is expected to enter production shortly.

Seeds of Doom Coming to DVD!

Doctor Who classic The Seeds of Doom coming to DVD!

Following reports elsewhere online this week, Kasterborous have received confirmation from 2entertain of the impending release of the 1976 Doctor Who classic The Seeds of Doom!

Starring Tom Baker and Lis Sladen and hailing from the halcyon Philip Hinchcliffe era of the show, The Seeds of Doom is a 6 episode thriller in two parts. Kicking off in Antarctica, and the discovery of two alien plant pods, the action switches later on to the UK and the threat of global catastophe as the remaining aggressive Krynoid pod germinates and begins to turn plant-life against humanity…

Co-starring Tony Beckley (The Italian Job's "Camp Freddie") as Harrison Chase, John Challis (Only Fools and Horses' "Boycie") as Scorby and Mark Jones as Arnold Keeler/Krynoid voice, The Seeds of Doom also features a short appearance by Sylvia Coleridge as batty artist Amelia Ducat

In terms of pacing and direction, this is definitely one of Douglas Camfield's best pieces of Doctor Who (in his last job on the show) and is a rarity in that despite being 34 years old the majority of the SFX are well integrated into the story. Despite a previous double-cassette release on VHS in 1994, the serial has long been on the wish-list of fans and topped the Doctor Who Magazine poll for most wished-for DVD in the most recent issue.

As you can tell, we're pretty excited by the release of this episode, expected in late October, for which Tom Baker and John Challis have apparently recorded a commentary for.

While the cover art is yet to be released, you can pre-order The Seeds of Doom for just £14.99 on Amazon!

Cleaning Up at Portal

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 05:09 PM PDT

Airlock Alpha's 2010 Portal Awards have taken place and Doctor Who has come up trumps in terms of awards, after being nominated in many categories.

Tenth Doctor Who David TennantA breakdown of the shows winning categories is as follows:

-David Tennant earned Best Actor as the Doctor

-Russell T Davies won the Gene Roddenberry Lifetime Achievement Award

-Bernard Cribbins won Best Supporting Actor as Wilfred Mott

-Doctor Who itself won Best Series (closely followed by Torchwood)

-Eve Myles earned herself a virtual statue for Best Actress (in Torchwood) followed by Karan Gillan.

-David Tennant's finale as the Doctor, The End of Time, won best television episode.

-Alex Kingston claimed the Best Guest Actor category for her role as River Song in The Time of Angels.

It's worth noting that Tennant was up against some stiff competition including John Barrowman (as Captain Jack in Torchwood, Matthew Fox (as Jack Shepard in Lost), Zachary Levi from Chuck and Eddie McClintock from Warehouse 13. Tennant earned himself sixty eight per cent of the overall vote followed closely by Barrowman.

Bernard Cribbins was also a clear favourite as he claimed 59 per cent of the vote for his category whilst being up against the likes of Robert Carlyle from Stargate: Universe, Enver Gjokaj from Dollhouse, John Noble from Fringe and Terry O'Quinn from Lost.

Phew! It's not surprising that our favourite shows has cleaned up yet again as the time and effort to make each episode different each week is startlingly difficult whereas shows such as Lost or Stargate: Universe has a slightly stricter rulebook to follow (no disrespect to the actors and production crews involved, they do sterling work themselves, but Doctor Who was in such limbo before 2005 it's amazing that it can still have this effect on the viewing public to this day).
