Character Building Time!

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 08:16 AM PDT

You might recall that Character Options have answered the prayers of many Doctor Who fans who have long sought after a Time Lord themed LEGO kit by releasing their own series of brick-building toys, known as Character Building.

Well things have moved on a lot since then – they're now releasing details of the sets, which start with the TARDIS Mini Set and the Dalek Progenitor Room Mini Set.

Note to brick-building enthusiasts: these kits have even got LEGO-style serial codes!

03850 The TARDIS Mini Set

Build your very own TARDIS and re-create adventures in time and space with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond! The TARDIS, or Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, is the Doctor's vehicle and home that can take him to any place and any time. Remember, it's bigger on the inside than the outside! Includes constructable TARDIS, fully articulated Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond micro-figures. 5+

03857 Dalek Progenitor Room Mini Set

Join the Doctor on the Dalek Spaceship where five brand new, powerful Daleks have emerged from the Progenitor Chamber. They have disintegrated the older "inferior" models and are now ready to destroy Earth! Help the Doctor save the day and finally defeat his oldest enemy! Highly detailed Dalek construction playset including a Dalek: The Supreme micro-figure. 5+

We're not yet sure when these kits will be released, but they're looking pretty good, we think you will agree!

It's a Miracle Day in the Neighbourhood!

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 06:28 AM PDT

Lots of Torchwoody things to talk about today, and at the top of the agenda, LOOK AT THIS!

It's the first promotional image featuring the full central cast (minus Bill Pullman's child-killing Oswald Danes)! From left to right: John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness (did I even have to say that?), Alexa Havins as Esther Drummond, Mekhi Phifer as Rex Matheson, and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper (blimey, she looks different with her hair like that!)

Of course, I suppose that lo-res cast image is nothing compared to the new Series 4 poster from the BBC below! It's been up and around the 'net for a few days now, but in case you've yet to see it, it features Captain Jack Harkness with a great big gun (nothing new then), a violet and orange backdrop of Los Angeles, and a new tagline: "Death is not an option." Click it to make it bigger:

Despite the fact that Torchwood: Miracle Day is a joint effort between the BBC and Starz, the two companies seem to prefer taking separate paths when it comes to the promotional campaign. Take this poster and try comparing it with the one recently unveiled by Starz. You can't.

They're completely different, right down to the logo. This is likely due to the differences between the BBC One audience and the Starz audience – one group is spread across a whole continent, mostly new to the series, and paying more than your everyday Jack (see what I did there?) for TV, while the other group, confined to a smaller space, has been following the show for a few years on a prime, high-rated network, and won't be fooled by seeing the words "A Starz Original Series."

In related news, we've been hearing further promises that Miracle Day will be bigger, bolder, and better from the production/acting team. Co-exec Julie Gardner has let slip that the budget for the season is three times what it was when Torchwood was a Wales-based show, and John Barrowman's been talking about all the reasons he thinks that's awesome:

"There is so much more we can do with Torchwood now having made the leap to America. It's going to be even bigger and better … the audience is going to need a forklift truck to pick their jaws off the ground. The stunt work is unbelievable. I used to do quite a lot of stunts except if it was jumping off of buildings but now I'm not allowed to because of the insurance policy. I'm much more valuable in America! … We're going to be bigger than cult, now it's about world domination."

And of course, where there's Jack, there's bound to be a bit of omnisexual romance in there somewhere:

"Jack will have his little dabblings and the audience will get exactly what they want. And I had a lot of fun doing it!"

Doctor what? Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres this summer on BBC One in the UK and specifically July 8th on Starz in the US!

SFX Issue 208 & Readers' Poll

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:52 AM PDT

This month's issue of SFX features the Doctor and Amy Pond on the front cover, plus a world exclusive preview of the new series of Doctor Who and results of the Craziest Ever Doctor Who Poll.

Doctor Who content in this issue:
 • World first TARDIS sound effect cover! If there's a problem with magazines, it's the not-insignificant lack of sound effects to accompany your literary journey. The good news? This is a problem of the past (for one issue at least…) thanks to the world first TARDIS soundcard tucked inside issue 208.
 • Look Who's Back! To celebrate The Doctor's imminent return to telly boxes across the globe we popped down to the big smoke to snap time-travelling trio Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill for our exclusive cover feature. There's some words with that Steven Moffat bloke in there somewhere too.
See a full list of non-Doctor Who related content from this issue here.

Issue 208 of SFX is on sale from Thursday 7 April.

A few weeks ago SFX.co.uk asked fans to vote in a number of categories for their Craziest Ever Doctor Who Poll. The results have been announced today on their website. Fans thought Helena Bonham Carter would make the best first female Doctor. She received 14.79% of the nearly 2,000 fans who voted. In second place with 9.5% is Tamsin Greig, who played a nurse in The Long Game.

Dave Golder, online editor of SFX.co.uk said:
Some might argue that Helena Bonham Carter's whole career has been one long dress rehearsal for the part. The Doctor has always been an eccentric and actresses don't come much more eccentric than Helena. Of all the Doctors so far she is probably most like a female Tom Baker, though we can see little bits of Troughton, Tennant and Smith in there too. What should she wear? A black wedding dress probably.

Helena Bonham Carter IS the Doctor!

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:27 AM PDT

It's happened only once, way back in 1999. The Curse of Fatal Death, a Doctor Who spoof written by one Steven Moffat, featured Joanna Lumley as a female version of the Doctor. We laughed, we sniggered and we generally didn't mind the change of the Doctor's gender as it was all quite tongue in cheek.

But if it were to happen, if we were really faced with the prospect that the Doctor was about to become female for the first time then who would be best to play the role?

Well if the poll administered by SFX magazine's website is any indication then the general public would like to see Hollywood actress Helena Bonham Carter try out the role as she is considered to be something of a "female Tom Baker"

The top 5 suggestions for the best female Doctor were:

1. Helena Bonham-Carter
2. Tamsin Greig
3. Emma Thompson
4. Keeley Hawes
5. Emma Watson

According to Dave Golder, the online editor on www.sfx.com:

"Of all the Doctors so far she is probably most like a female Tom Baker."

Coming in second in the poll was actress and comedienne Tamsin Greig, who guested in the 2005 episode The Long Game as a surgeon. Actress Emma Watson, famous for her roles in the Harry Potter film series, was the only actress under the age of thirty to make the top five.

However, it seems that the actress who has played one of the most Doctor-ish roles to date, Alex Kingston as River Song, feels that it's something that won't happen anytime soon stating:

"I think the Doctor will always stay a male."

What do you think then? Should the Doctor be able to change gender or should Time Lords and Time Ladies stay well out of each others way?

Episode titles for Season 6.1 finalized (poss. spoilers)

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 01:26 AM PDT

image
The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out in the UK this week (but not available in Canada for another month) has revealed a revised list of episode titles for the first half of Season 6, which debuts on Space on April 23.

Few of these titles are obvious spoilers, with the possible exception of Neil Gaiman's Episode 4. Of note is several episode titles have been changed from previous announcements. Of course, there's nothing saying any of these might not change again before broadcast:

1. The Impossible Astronaut - Steven Moffat
2. Day of the Moon - Steven Moffat
3. The Curse of the Black Spot - Steve Thompson
4. The Doctor's Wife - Neil Gaiman (of Sandman, Stardust and Coraline fame)
5. The Rebel Flesh - Matthew Graham (co-creator of Life on Mars)
6. The Almost People - Matthew Graham
7. A Good Man Goes to War - Steven Moffat

Of course for anyone not aware, episodes 1/2 and 5/6 are two-parters, and it's likely episode 7 and the first episode of the second half will be too.

So far the only confirmed episode titles (again subject to change) from the second half of the season are What Are Little Boys Made Of? by Mark Gatiss (the comparisons to Star Trek TOS's classic What Are Little Girls Made Of? will be inevitable) and The God Complex by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse.
