Series 6: Episode 1 & 2 Review

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 10:59 AM PDT

A spoiler-free review of the first two episodes of Series 6 -  The Impossible Astronaut & Day of The Moon, by Tom Colman.

Usually a Doctor Who series opener is very light in nature -  a quick introduction of the characters, some comedic moments, a threat to the earth, etc – this one is completely the opposite. It's scary, gritty and in my opinion, one of the darkest yet. Saying that, The Impossible Astronaut opens in a very comedic way, which helps the shock factor when the inevitable death scene that many of you will have heard about finally comes. By the time Day of the Moon ends, you'll have been shocked many times though.

Inside Doctor Who #2!

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 07:26 AM PDT

More behind the scenes clips and interviews from Doctor Who Series 6, featuring showrunner and cheif writer Steven Moffat, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston.

You won't find more than one or two new clips in this lot, but if you've somehow stumbled here onto Kasterborous looking for information about a BBC show called Doctor Who, what you have here is a pretty good introduction…

Many thanks to Rory at BBC America!

Off the Shelf DVDs?

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 07:07 AM PDT

Doctor Who Revisitations IIThose of you who pre-ordered your Revisitations 2 DVD box set or went to HMV to get it, you'll now be enjoying the sweet remastering and extras that make for fascinating new insights into some classic Doctor Who stories.

Those of you who went elsewhere, such as your local supermarket, may have been slightly disappointed, and you may have noticed a lack of the box set on the shelves, where it should have been sat waiting for you to throw at the checkout counter so you can race home to discover new and interesting things about your favourite show.

It seems that the box set, which includes the stories The Seeds of Death, Carnival of Monsters and Resurrection of the Daleks has had a small distribution problem.

Posting on Twitter, the social networking site, 2|entertain explained:

"2e is sorry to hear that fans have encountered problems purchasing the latest CDW release Revisitations 2…Although available through online retailers and HMV the release was not stocked by any supermarkets… 2e continues to seek the broadest distribution possible for CDW releases… and will be ensuring that sufficient stock is available instore and online to meet demand in the future." (message ENDS) :-) "

Unfortunately these things will happen from time to time and it can be a real pain and we at Kasterborous feel the pain of anyone who has not been able to get their hands on this (quite frankly brilliant) box set. However you can find lots of online retailers such as Play.com , Amazon (where you will find it for just £29.93) or DVD.co.uk that should be able to process your order in a relatively speedy manor!

Late Late Karen

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 06:25 AM PDT

There's been so much Doctor Who goodness on American talk comedy hour The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson ever since that fateful day in June when a casual conversation with Nerdist Podcaster Chris Hardwick turned into rants of praise about a certain awesome show.

Since that moment, The Late Late Show has featured a Doctor Who night with(out) an infamous viral cold open, excellent conversations with both Matt Smith and Alex Kingston, a miniature TARDIS sitting on Craig's desk every single night, and even a trip to the recent 2011 Gallifrey One convention which we'll get to in a minute.

So what's next for this comedic Scotsman's late night Who-fests?  According to Gallifrey News Base, her name is Karen Gillan!

Coinciding with the Doctor Who cast's 2011 promotional tour in America, Karen will appear in-studio on the Late Late Show on April 13th, for an episode to be broadcast on a later date.  This suggests that, like last year, the cast's US trip, whose announced events are currently only in New York, will eventually end up on the continent's west coast (The Late Late Show is recorded in Los Angeles).

If you want to see her live and in person (if you don't, you must be crazy), and you happen to be able to be at the CBS Television City in Hollywood by about 4 PM Pacific Time (the recording starts at 4:30) on the aforementioned date you can request non-guaranteed free tickets at 1iota.com, where there's also more information about CBS studio audience dress codes, policies, etc.

Since The Late Late Show is surfacing in the Who news universe yet again, we figured this would be the perfect time to show you this superb clip from the end of February when Chris Hardwick brought the show's non-Whovian intern Bridger to Gallifrey 2011.  As always be aware that this clip, originally broadcast on a late night program, may not be suitable for children:

Folks, there's a new Doctor Who fan among us… a Weeping Angel has gained her wings!

David Tennant stars in United

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 02:55 AM PDT

The BBC has released more information about the new BBC Two drama starring David Tennant as coach Jimmy Murphy.

United is based on the true story of Manchester United's legendary "Busby Babes", the youngest side ever to win the Football League; the 1958 Munich Air Crash that claimed eight of their number; and the extraordinary spirit of a city that rebuilt the team in the wake of the disaster. The Munich Air Crash killed 23 of the 43 passengers on board, including supporters, journalists and embassy staff.

The drama was shot between November and December 2010 in and around the north of England and was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by James Strong, both of whom have previously worked on Torchwood and Doctor Who.

Tennant was asked in an interview with BBC; "What attracted you to United?"
I've worked with James Strong and Chris Chibnall several times before and James sent me the script. I knew it would be worth reading because it came from him. I'm not a football expert but I was completely bowled over by the incredible story and journey that Manchester United went on. I thought that if it had grabbed and moved me as much as that, then clearly the story must be universal, worth telling and something I wanted to be part of.
You can read the full interview here.

United will broadcast in Week 17, 23rd - 29th April. An exact time and date is still to be announced.

The Pen is Mightier Than the Sonic

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 01:58 AM PDT

Have you ever written a Doctor Who story? Wished it could have been made into a TV episode, or perhaps an audio drama or book?

More to the point, have you been trying for many, many years?

Matt Smith hasn't, but he would revealed to SFX magazine that he would like to…

"I'd quite like to write a script one day, because I'm learning a lot from Steven [Moffat]."

"You've got to be really good to write a Doctor Who script, so it's a long way off, but one day."

Naturally this news recalls the fact that Matt has a habit of writing about the characters he plays in order to get a better understanding of them; he's done it with the Doctor, and also apparently did this with Christopher Isherwood who he so excellently portrayed in Christopher and His Kind.

However there may be some way for him to go if he's ever going to gethis work on screen. Matt doesn't like to share his work!

"I've got to get over that, if I want to be a writer."

TARDIS Trio on Series 6

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 01:33 AM PDT

To coincide with the return of Doctor Who, the BBC have released interviews with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, aka the TARDIS trio. Read on for their thoughts on what is coming up in Series 6…

Matt Smith

Matt Smith inhabited the role of the Doctor last year and instantly won a legion of fans with his kooky take on the iconic character. Here he reveals what lies in store for the Doctor and his fellow TARDIS travellers in 2011, and why the Fez is no longer his favourite hat.

"I think The Silence are one of the greatest monsters of recent years and certainly one of the scariest," reveals Matt Smith. "They're also very clever and I love the fact they've been silently working since the dawn of time to make The Doctor come unstuck."

Matt is talking about the new breed of monster which viewers will be introduced to in the opening two episodes of the series. He is remaining tight-lipped about what viewers can expect but he does offer some insights into the story arc for this series. "Steven [Moffat, writer] has a grand plan and some of the seeds he planted in the last series start coming to fruition and affecting the characters in drastic ways," explains Matt. "Every character is faced with the most seismic and high-stakes choices we've seen so far."

Doctor Who for Week 17 - time and date still to be announced!

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 12:26 AM PDT

The BBC Press Office have released details for Week 17 (23-29 April) which, though it confirms Doctor Who will be on that week, still doesn't give an actual time or date for broadcast!

Doctor Who Magazine reported in its new edition that the series will commence from 23rd April; Saturday programmes mentioned in the BBC press item include So You Think You Can Dance, on between 6:30-7:30pm, and Casualty at a time yet to be confirmed. This infers that The Impossible Astronaut could be broadcast either before or after the talent show.

In previous years, Doctor Who has premiered at: Rose (7:00pm, 45m); New Earth (7:05pm, 45m); Smith and Jones (7:00pm, 45m); Partners in Crime (6:45pm, 50m); The Eleventh Hour (6:25pm, 65m). If the time for So You Think You Can Dance doesn't alter, indications are that this premiere might be broadcast at either the earliest or latest time so far since the series returned!

The online version of the Radio Times publishes a fortnight ahead, so the BBC1 and other channel schedules for the 23rd April should appear this Sunday.

The Press Office synopsis for the episode:
Doctor Who – The Impossible Astronaut Ep 1/7
New this week
Day and time to be confirmed BBC ONE

Four envelopes, numbered two, three and four – each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but TARDIS blue – begin the latest series of the time-travelling adventures. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one?

This strange summons reunites The Doctor, Amy, Rory and River Song in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret that The Doctor's friends must never reveal to him.

Placing his life entirely in their hands, The Doctor agrees to search for the recipient of the fourth envelope. Just who is Canton Everett Delaware the Third? And what is the relevance of their only other clue: "Space 1969"? Their quest lands them in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former FBI agent Canton in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.

How Do You Watch Yours?

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:23 PM PDT

We've still got over two weeks to go before the return of Doctor Who, but already people are making plans about how they will be watching The Impossible Astronaut!

While the time is still to be confirmed, we're all working on the fact that the episode should air on BBC One on Easter Saturday (the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday) at some point in the evening after the football results have been read out.

As you probably know the episode is the first of a two-part story set in the 1960s and sees regulars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill joined by semi-regular Alex Kingston with guest appearances from Mark Sheppard and Stuart Milligan.

Hopes are high for a return to the 7pm broadcast time after a recent trailer was deemed "too scary" for childen earlier in the evening, but if you haven't got family and friends to invite round you can meet up with other fans at the Lass O'Gowrie on 36 Charles Street, Manchester M1 7DB from 6pm to 8.3-pm where they will be airing the first episode of Doctor Who Series 6 on a big screen in the Salmon Rooms!

Sounds like a pretty good option to me, and given the renowned menu and friendly bar staff at that very establishment, one that I'm seriously considering!

That's me at Anime Detour last weekend. Rather wonderfully, you guys have now passed the target for donations, but don't let that stop you. I'm told I'm going to be sent that enormous combat spoon if we double it (which I'm sure I'll find a charitable home for). And I still have to dye the beard green to double George R.R. Martin's contribution. So there's loads still to play for. Thanks to donations from the awesome authors Melinda Snodgrass and Martin Sketchley (who got us over the line). Alan, I am indeed a member of the Patrick Moore Appreciation Society, and Ian, thanks for the fill-up.

Anime Detour was great. It was interesting to meet an entirely new fandom. (I may start visiting knitting and railway enthusiast conventions.) Anime voice actors are an amazingly friendly group of people. (They basically hosted a panel asking me questions.) Just A Minute worked well, with anime subjects. I got to hang out with some of my mates from Convergence (the best convention in the world), and Caroline luxuriated in being at the heart of anime geekdom, and did well on her panels (including one on women in anime which dealt with some major issues).

While I was away, several things happened. One of my editors on Action Comics, Wil Moss, wrote this very kind article about my Lex Luthor run. I did this interview with CBR about the forthcoming Doomsday storyline. And another with io9 about the Lex run. DC revealed tons of details about the enormous forthcoming Action Comics #900. And Raymond Masters on Wired's Geek Dad has started Nine Articles about Action #900,

More Series 6 Episodes Titles!

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 08:04 PM PDT

Doctor Who Magazine has naturally come to the rescue of anyone dying to know the episode titles of Series 6, with the titles of the first half of the run featuring in issue #433.

It now transpires that the previously titled two parter from Matthew Graham The Rebel Flesh and Gangers is now known as The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People, while the Hugh Bonneville-guesting pirate episode by Stephen Thompson – who wrote the second Sherlock episode – is called The Curse Of The Black Spot.

Episode 7 is where Steven  Moffat earlier revealed we would see a "game-changing cliffhanger" and leads into the mid-season break which the The Grand Moff hopes will prevent anyone from missing the odd episode. This episode is titled, tantilizingly (considering what River Song told us last year), A Good Man Goes To War.

The full list of episodes as it stands:

1 & 2 – The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon by Steven Moffat

3 – The Curse Of The Black Spot by Stephen Thompson

4 – The Doctor's Wife by Neil Gaiman

5 & 6 The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People by Matthew Graham

7 – A Good Man Goes To War by Steven Moffat

Little is known about the second half of the series as yet, so stay tuned and we'll bring you the titles of episodes by Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts and Toby Whithouse as they're confirmed…
