Terry Nation Biography Release Date

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 05:26 AM PDT

Terry Nation biographyWe've received further details about the new biography of Terry Nation, The Man Who Invented the Daleks – The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation, by Alwyn W. Turner…

Previously reported on last summer and again in January, the book tells the story of Nation's early career and his impact and influence on international television through shows such as The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders!, and of course Doctor Who.

Terry Nation was one of the most successful and prolific writers for television that Britain ever produced. Survivors, his vision of a post-apocalyptic England, so haunted audiences in the Seventies that the BBC revived it over thirty years on. Blake's 7, constantly rumoured for return, endures as a cult sci-fi classic. And his most fearsome creations, the Daleks, ensured and at times eclipsed the success of Doctor Who.

Indeed, almost half a century after their first appearance, new additions to Dalek mythology continue to top the Saturday-night ratings, while the word itself has entered the Oxford English Dictionary, passing into the language as the name of the most famous race of aliens in fiction.

But while his genocidal pepper pots brought him notoriety and riches, Nation played a much wider role in British broadcasting's golden age. As part of the legendary Associated London Scripts, he wrote for Spike Milligan, Frankie Howerd and an increasingly troubled Tony Hancock. And as one of the key figures behind the adventure series of the Sixties – including The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders! – he turned the pulp classics of his boyhood into a major British export.

Like Arthur Conan Doyle before him, Nation was frequently bemused by the appeal of his most famous creations, and similarly cavalier toward them. Now, The Man Who Invented the Daleks explores their curious and contested origins, and sheds light on a strange world of ambitious young writers, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look very different.

Alwyn W. Turner is the author of a number of acclaimed books on modern British culture, including Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s, Rejoice! Rejoice!: Britain in the 1980s, Halfway to Paradise and The Biba Experience.

Set to appear on shelves on May 25th 2011, The Man Who Invented the Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation by Alwyn W. Turner is published by Aurum Press and has an RRP of £20 – however you can pre-order from Amazon for just £12.69!

Has the Piper Played?

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 04:36 AM PDT

Bless poor Billie! The former Doctor Who hottie has apparently struggled to find work since the end of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, citing the financial crisis as a reason.

According to a popular red-top, she believes that the industry has become unpredictable.

"I'm just trying to find a job. We're back to the drawing board. It's frustrating, it's tiring. It's desperate. You slightly lose your mind.

"You have no confidence, then you have too much confidence. It's an endless frustration. That's the nature of the beast. You have to suck it up and get on with it."

Poor David Tennant, too. He's busy signing on, isn't he? Oh no, that's right – he's not!

It's a shame that Rose Tyler has rarely been seen since her numerous comebacks in Doctor Who, but given Piper's success in other roles such as Secret Diary, the Sally Lockhart adventures and a couple of costume dramas there is surely a major question that needs to be asked:

Is it time to sack your agent, Billie?

Apparently whoever advises Billie tells her that there is no work in the UK (something else attributable to the age of austerity we are now said to be in) and Billie is considering heading to the USA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen any TV stations closing. In fact we're in the middle of a period of some of the best televised drama in years.

"Things are getting made a lot faster for less money and there are a lot fewer opportunities for actors," she added. "There's not a lot of work in the UK – that's why everyone's moving to America.

"It's where the work seems to be. But it definitely feels like a lot more of a slog to get a gig these days. I suppose that's a lot to do with our current climate and financial messes. People seem to have to work harder with a lot less time."

It seems to us that former Kasterborous favourite Billie has two choices:

  1. Head to the USA
  2. Call Big Finish

What do you think? Have you got a job for Billie? Let us know!

Seismic High Stakes in Series 6

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 03:16 AM PDT

Ah memories, like Barbara Streisand once bellowed, are like the corners of our mind (though I think my mind is in fact an oblong, so there, Ms Streisand) and Matt Smith has been sweeping the skirting board of his mind corners, sharing some of his favourite and in yet more wobbly time nonsense will soon be our favourites too.

Matt revealed in his humble opinion that Series 6's new big bad will be one of the scariest:

"I think The Silence are one of the greatest monsters of recent years and certainly one of the scariest. They're also very clever and I love the fact they've been silently working since the dawn of time to make the Doctor come unstuck."

And with new monsters comes difficult decisions not just for the Doctor but everyone onboard the good ship TARDIS.

"Every character is faced with the most seismic and high-stakes choices we've seen so far."

But before the going gets dark there's the little matter of the Doctor Who teams first foray across the Atlantic to film the 60's set two parter.

Despite being relatively isolated out in the desert of Utah it didn't stop one Doctor Who fan from tracking down Matt on location:

"It was very strange. We were in the middle of the desert and suddenly there was a lady with a campervan and deck chair, holding an iPad up with a moving screen which read 'autograph please!' I mean how on earth she knew we were in the middle of the desert I have no idea, but it certainly proved her dedication to the show!"

It almost bring a proud tear to the eye…

Series 6 Trailer for CBBC

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Younger Doctor Who viewers have been treated to a slightly different Series 6 trailer this week as a new edit of the trailer appeared on CBBC.

Much shorter than the trailers you might already be familiar with, various "disturbing" elements have been cut out.

What this might been to the episodes themselves isn't clear. Perhaps the BBC are working on the assumption that Doctor Who is watched by families and CBBC is watched by children without their parents present, but this difference in the trailers and the previous trailer airing later in the evening continues to suggest that Doctor Who might be restored to the 7pm timeslot it enjoyed from 2005-2008.

Doctor Who on Xbox 360!

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 06:39 PM PDT

Doctor Who has hit the Xbox 360! Not quite in the way fans might want, however. While there are no games set to be announced (as far as we're aware) fans logging into Xbox LIVE this weekend will be able to catch promotional content for the new series of Doctor Who!

There is plenty of content in there too, split into three sections.

The first has four streaming videos.  They are:

1) New Season Trailer (The recent BBCA trailer)
2) New Season Extended Trailer (The one the BBC ran on Dec 25th)
3) Behind the scenes of the new season (Same recent bts video)
4) Exclusive Prequel to Season Premiere (Same prequel we saw)

In the second, there's also a link to download previous episodes of the show (all the stuff from 2005 onwards).

Finally, there's some downloadable stuff.  There's a Doctor Who theme for the Xbox 360 with four pictures (the theme is not a premium theme).  There's also a profile picture pack, with several pictures you can use in your profile as a gamer pic.  They are:  River Song, the Doctor Who logo, the TARDIS, sonic screwdriver, Amy, Rory, the Doctor, & the BBCA logo.

If I were you guys, I'd download this soon.  A lot of times, these promo packs for something like a TV premiere tend to disappear after the event happens.  No idea how long this will be up.  Also, since it's heavily promoting BBC America, I'm going to guess it will only be available in the US.

However, I noticed there is also a Torchwood: Children of Earth theme still available in the marketplace, too.  All free.  Still I wouldn't wait.  Go grab this stuff now.
