To whet your appetites we've included the introductory story text below:

The Doctor opened his eyes and took a sharp intake of breath as he clambered to his feet. Slowly looking around him, there was a distinct air of unfamiliarity about the environment. How did he get here? Where are Amy and Rory? What planet is this? And more importantly…Where is the TARDIS???

It's late at night and the starry sky above twinkles in an unnatural manner as it meets with the almost blue hue of the planets surface. The Doctor shivers and tries to gain a sense of bearing. Up ahead in the distance he can just about make out the lights of what appears to be a small city.

He starts off in the direction, when an asteroid lands 30 metres to his right, shaking the ground beneath him, forcing The Doctor to maintain his balance. Suddenly it becomes clear as to the unnatural nature of the stars as The Doctor realises an asteroid belt passes through part of the planets atmosphere. Quickly he gathers his pace and starts running towards the city.

As he gets closer, The Doctor finally realises where he is…The Maldovarium…

He gathers his wits and becomes mindful of the setting, which is famed across the galaxy for its reputation as a hive of opportunistic characters where strange things happen to even the most steadfast of travellers.

The Doctor needs to find some allies and piece together the events that are clearly missing from his memory.

An Open Letter to the Makers of Doctor Who Insider

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Dear Editorial Staff of Doctor Who Insider and Panini Publishing,

Doctor Who is becoming the hot thing in North America right now. There's a screening of the premiere in New York and Chicago (please let Toronto be not too far behind). Karen Gillan is the third Doctor Who guest to appear on Craig Ferguson. It's going to debut day and date with the UK in both Canada and the US.

imageApparently we even have a magazine all our own. Doctor Who Insider. The first issue came out last week. A magazine for North American Doctor Who fans. But here's the thing…

Where's the North American fan voice?

OK, a little bit of a declaration of self interest here. For ten years, I edited a fanzine for DWIN called Enlightenment. Over the past two years, I've co-edited two volumes of Doctor Who fan writing called Time, Unincorporated by Mad Norwegian Press (it got a great review in DWM, by the way!) In both products, over the years I have edited some fantastic North American fan writers who have great things to say about Doctor Who, its characters, and the ongoing story.

Not that I see any of them them in Doctor Who Insider. Or anything from the articulate people behind the great North American podcasts, such as Radio Free Skaro and Podshock. Or the people who broadcast Doctor Who in North America: BBC America and Space (I know the people at Space. They'd be amazing contributors).

What I do see are the usual blokes from Panini House in Tunbridge Wells, who make Doctor Who Magazine.

Don't get me wrong, great blokes, all of them—I love these writers. DWM is a brilliant magazine, and keeps getting better. But a Doctor Who magazine for the North American market deserves more than just a "fan zone" of piccies of lucky North American fans with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan

How about, I don't know, the radical idea of approaching North American writers, North American fans, who frankly know as much about Doctor Who as any Brit and in some cases love the series even more, to write for it.

How about having a presence at Gallifrey One, North America's, no, wait, the world's largest Doctor Who convention. I was astonished that Doctor Who Insider missed a great opportunity last February: you could have done a mockup "zero" issue and given it to fans and gotten great buzz or even come to the con and spoken at panels. I thought maybe you'd be at Wondercon instead since it had a big Doctor Who presence this year (less than a week before launch) but, from all reports, you weren't there either.

How about thinking about articles about Doctor Who's North American heritage, about the Canadian who created it, the Canadian and American sources that enabled the Jon Pertwee stories to be recolourized or returned to the archive, about the love from Craig Ferguson, all sorts of stories that might be of interest. I'm not saying these are cover feature-worthy, but it might actually provide some breadth.

Any of these things would be good ideas. Instead we get the same old blokes from Tunbridge Wells we know and love from DWM. (The only difference is the sort of breathless tone that makes Doctor Who Adventures sound like a scholarly journal. Seriously, guys, you could tone it down a notch.)

I honestly wish Doctor Who Insider the best of luck. But, really, there's a wide world of North American contributors, fans and ideas you're not even trying to tap, and that leaves me both confused and a little cynical. You want to do a magazine on Doctor Who for the North American market, get out of Tunbridge Wells.

Best,
Graeme

Karen on Twists & Pranks

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 07:45 PM PDT

Karen Gillan has joined Matt Smith in the practice of sharing memories from and teasing the next seven episodes of Doctor Who with the BBC Press Office.

For instance, it can be inferred from the following anecdote that the much-hyped chasm-dangling conclusion of A Good Man Goes to War may come as a surprise even to some of the production crew:

"The ending of this first set of episodes has been hidden from everyone!  Even I got given a dummy ending to episode seven and it was only at the read-through that Steven Moffat took me, Matt and Arthur [Darvill] into the corridor to read the proper version on his laptop.  We then all paced around going, 'oh my God!'  It's brilliant and viewers will just have to tune in to find out more.  It certainly provides a fantastic cliff-hanger to see us through until the autumn."

She also repeated the usual praise that's come from many of the cast regarding the Silence, the new monster for The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, mentioning again that they threaten to knock the Weeping Angels off their throne of Scariest New Series Monster, and adding:

"The concept behind them is ingenious because it feels like they are undefeatable, and this series also sees the return of some of the Doctor's oldest foes, but with an interesting twist…"

Non-spoilerphobic K readers have been aware of the identity of at least one of said longtime enemies for a while now, but it'll be interesting to see the context of this reappearance with a "twist."

Karen has also laughingly related the shenanigans that take place on the set of our favourite show.  Karen, I'd keep an eye on that Matt character if I were you – from what you're saying, he sounds like a bit of a creeper:

"Matt has also taken to hiding in my trailer and I'll go in, humming to myself, and then he'll just jump out at me and shout.  The first time he did it was hilarious because he scared me so much that I fell backwards against the wall and slid down it!  He also has an annoying habit of filming me when I fall asleep, while in make-up in the mornings, and it's a hideous sight – I'm not going to lie!  Arthur eggs him on and the pair of them gang up but don't worry, I give as good as I get.  Although it's brilliant when Alex Kingston is around because she knows how to handle them!"

Karen has also talked of her new-found love for sword-fighting and surviving the extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) in the Utah desert.

Doctor Who returns this Easter weekend with The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon on BBC One and BBC One HD – oh and BBC America too!
