Who's on the Radio Times Cover?

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:01 AM PDT

This week's Radio Times which goes on sale today, Tuesday 12th April, has an exclusive preview of the new season of Doctor Who and includes an interview with Matt Smith as well as Steven Moffat's exclusive episode guide to the thrill-packed new series!

Beyond these details we know very little right now, but one thing that is interesting is how the show is being promoted with the issue of the Radio Times from the week before Series 6 begins.

The issue of the Radio Times you see on the right (featuring Karen Gillan and Matt Smith as Amy Pond and the Doctor) features the date in the top right-hand corner: 16-22 April 2011.

Yet as we all know, Doctor Who begins on April 23rd (on both BBC One and BBC America). So what is going on here? Why is Radio Times giving Doctor Who cover space the week before it's on TV? Have they moved The Impossible Astronaut forward a week?

Sadly, no.

Rather than being an interesting promotional plan as we initially suspected, it seems likely that the true cause is the Royal Wedding of Prince William and his distant cousin a commoner known as Kate Middleton, which takes place on April 29th (and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the last you'll hear of it from us).

Still, nice to see Matt, Karen and A.N. Other on the cover!

(Thanks to Neelam)

OMG! They Killed Rory!

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 08:14 AM PDT

As you should have realised by now, we're taking a look at each of our time travelling heroes to see if we can work out whether it is the Doctor, River Song, Amy or Rory who will meet their much-advertised end in The Impossible Astronaut.

Possibly the least likely of the four – heralded by Steven Moffat with the cry "We're not lying, we're not cheating. One of those four people is going to die. The Doctor's darkest hour is coming," – is Rory Pond, a man quite happy to take his wife's name following marriage.

But hang on, haven't we been here before?

Didn't Rory die last year? Twice?

That's right, he did. Slain by a Silurian in Cold Blood and then destroyed as an Auton replicant with Rory's memories, the poor Mr Pond has been killed more times than South Park's Kenny (well not quite, but it seems like it).

So surely he won't die this time around…

…or is that what The Grand Moff just wants us to think, eh?

He's a fiendish chap that Steven Moffat, creating monstrous enemies that move when you have your eyes closed, that manipulate recording and communication devices, with some mad timey-wimey element thrown in to play with your head while you're trying to work out how the Doctor can overcome this particular challenge.

As we don't yet know how this death is going to occur within the narrative, if The Impossible Astronaut features any non-linear elements (either within it and the second part, Day of the Moon or within the season as a whole) we're pretty much left to speculate.

However if Rory is set to meet yet another sticky end, then there is bound to be a lot of chatter about this after the event. After all, without an interesting undoing of his death (at which point one begins to wonder if death has lost its meaning in the Whoniverse) Rory is still appearing in later episodes of the series, unless Steven Moffat paid Arthur Darvill to hang around on set for 9 months.

Nice work if you can get it…

Amy Out for a Duck?

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 06:45 AM PDT

"One of them will die…"

This was the prophecy that Dalek Caan gave the Doctor and Davros in 2008's The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. A foretelling of Donna Noble's fate. Or was it? We've been promised (or threatened depending on how you look at it) by Steven Moffat that one of the four main characters in episodes one and two of this year's series of Doctor Who will perish. Either the Doctor, Amy, Rory or River will meet their maker and breathe their last.

But who will it be? Chances are that Amy's time is up and she's going to feel the sour touch of the grim reaper before anyone else. Why? Because let's face it, every other lead has died already! We've already seen River's noble and dramatic death; Rory (Arthur Darvill) died twice last year and the Doctor? Well he's died more times than Ron Dixon from Brookside has had heart attacks (nice topical reference there – Ed).

Amy is the only member to have died for less than a few minutes (she was back to her old self after the cliff-hanger of The Pandorica Opens) and so the potential is there for her death to have the most impact. And after all, she means something special to each one of the leads so it would be a massive loss for them all. Somehow you can't quite imagine Rory being beside himself with grief if River was to somehow kick the bucket again; he just doesn't know her that well.

But you know what, all will be well anyway. This is classic Moffat getting anyone who may casually watch the show to tune in and see the results of his claim. Hardcore fans will always watch Doctor Who week in, week out, even if a hurricane was taking place outside ("Is the Number 23 hovering in the air outside?" "Ssshhhhh! The Doctor's explaining about his last regeneration!") whereas this "someone will die" promise has to be a clever ruse to bring in casual watchers only to be solved at the end of the adventure.

Obviously.

Right?

I mean, when has Doctor Who ever killed off a major character for good…?

Every Song Must End…

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 04:50 AM PDT

As you may recall from last week, Steven Moffat will soon drop a bombshell on us and kill off one of the four main characters (the Doctor, Amy, Rory, or River) in the opening two-parter of Doctor Who Series 6:

"We're not lying, we're not cheating.  One of those four people is going to die."

Frankly it's difficult to imagine how he can keep his word and abstain from lying and cheating in order to pull this off, as we already know from previous reports/trailers that all four of them should be popping up again at least once following the The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon.  For instance, we've known for weeks now that the Doctor, Amy, and Rory are all to appear in The Curse of the Black Spot, the story that immediately succeeds the American adventure.

With that information, and that information alone, it's easy to conclude that River's song will be the one to end.  But wait – think back to November, when the Grand Moff had a chat with New York Magazine:

"I'm writing the episode right now where the Doctor finds out who [River] is.  We're not just going to endlessly tease."

As I recall, principle photography on the opening U.S. story had already begun at that point.  Which means the script for that story was very likely at least 95% intact.  Which means it's highly probable that the episode Moffat was writing was meant for further down the line.  Which means River will surely be back, in some form.

Will River be the one to die?  I think so.  Will Moffat end up "cheating" her death somehow?  I don't see how he can't.

Of course, there's still the argument (surely you've heard it by now, if not made it yourself) that River can't be the one to perish, because her fate, as we witnessed in the latter half of Series 4, is in the Library with the Tenth Doctor.  But a good chunk of Series 5 and A Christmas Carol was spent addressing the concept that time can be rewritten.  We saw it happen ourselves, twice, with the erasure of Rory in Cold Blood and his return to existence (the proper Rory, not the Auton) in The Big Bang.  So who's to say that the events in Forest of the Dead can't be undone?

Like I mentioned before, the fact that we know the Doctor, Amy, and Rory will be back in Episode 3 (and 4, for that matter) makes me certain that River will be the one to sell the farm.  But it's difficult to picture this happening without impossibly unfortunate consequences for everyone else, especially the Doctor.

As always, your take is much appreciated!

Matt, Karen and Arthur in America

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 11:17 PM PDT

The recent appearances by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in the USA caused quite a stir, with the three Doctor Who stars causing fans to lineup in their hundreds to meet the trio for a DVD signing!

While stateside, the time travelling trio also took the time to take part in a few interviews, such as this one with BBC America, in which you will discover that they're being put up in flash hotels and that Matt would like to live in New York City one day…

The brave fans who queued from 6.30 am, meanwhile, were featured on a Manhattan-based news website, with 18 year old Shelby Maniccia stating:

"Matt Smith is my favorite doctor, I'm totally in love with him."

Meanwhile the much older Andy Stamat, 57, who has been a fan since the 1980s, believes:

"The writing, although comedic, definitely deals with philosophy, science fiction and mysticism in a way that other shows don't."

It's great to see that Matt, Karen and Arthur had such a good reception once again in the USA – but when are they going to tour the UK…?
