Tennant the Vampire Slayer

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 08:12 AM PDT

Since leaving Doctor Who in 2009 (such a long time ago now) David Tennant has had multiple drama roles that have received him much acclaim. However, his big break in America has yet to come; Rex is Not Your Lawyer dwindled somewhat and eventually proved unsuccessful in being picked up for a full television series.

It seems that a change is in the air now, as the remake of the 1985 film Fright Night, a slightly tongue-in-cheek-vampire horror film sees Tennant star in one of the lead roles that of Peter Vincent, a Las Vegas magician who gets caught up in some trouble whilst trying to prove that vampires don't exist.

The plot of the movie sees teenage horror film fan Charley Brewster discover that his next door neighbour is actually a vampire, something that Charlie has a hard time convincing everyone else of.

It's a perfect role for Tennant who is something of a showman anyway and the poster showing off his character certainly looks dramatic and, if we're honest, quite cool.

The lead role will be played by Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in the most recent Star Trek film and Colin Farrell will apparently be playing the menacing vampire-next-door role.

Filmed in 3-D to make sure that audiences are given a good scare here and there, this could well prove to be David Tennant's role that lands him more and more parts in Hollywood and the film world.

We'll find out in October when the film is released!

The Love Doctor

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 07:23 AM PDT

Ah love is a many splendored thing but not as splendid as the universe for the Doctor. Any chance of our favourite Time Lord (take that Drax!) settling down in a cottage (hang on…) with his best girly by his side have been cruely crushed by Matt Smith.

They'll be no honeymoon from the universe it seems as Smith told the Radio Times the Doctor is "too much of a space bachelor" to ever give up the life of a time lord.

"The universe is his mistress and he's not going to give her up for anyone! He finds marriage all rather peculiar, I have to say. To him, spending his whole life with someone is an alien concept."

We've seen his reaction to a 'forward' Amy Pond and we know the speculation that at some point in his past/future/alternate life he gets hitched to River Song but Smith is still adamant that the love between them won't go any further than mild flirtation.

"The Doctor gets to flirt, he just doesn't get all the rubbish stuff. He doesn't have to clean up!

Maybe The Doctor will pack it all in and go and live in a shack with River, but I can't see it. I think he's always going to have the element of a mad man with a box, which I really like."

The Impossible Astronaut airs Saturday 23rd April on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.

Steven Moffat “Ups the Stakes”

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 06:51 AM PDT

Exciting times are nearly upon us, we've got a brand new series of Doctor Who that starts in little over two weeks and to add to that we've got some massive storylines for the TARDIS crew that promise to shake up their entire world forever.

From the off, things are different as we start the initial run of Series 6 with a two parter rather than the standard single episode. And according to Executive Producer and Head Writer Steven Moffat, it's the equivalent of a series finale with all the explosive twists and turns that the story takes.

Talking to the Radio Times magazine, Moffat commented on The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon and how he wanted to "up the stakes" in terms of what viewers would be given this year as Doctor Who started it's two part run:

"I said to our genius director Toby Haynes, 'Start like it's the finale', and my God, that's just what he's done…I'm not sure Doctor Who has ever felt bigger, bolder or madder."

As has also been talked about for this year, we face a massively huge cliff-hanger on episode seven that will "change everything" for the Doctor. What this will be remains to be seen. Will we find out that River is the Doctor's wife? Is Amy is an android? Will the Doctor decide that he's rather forget about all this time travelling malarkey and sign on instead? All the Moffat had to say was this:

"Our heroes will set out on the long road to the deadliest secret in the universe, and when it stares you in the face, you might just discover you've known about it all along."

Oh, just you wait and see….

Doctor Who returns to BBC One on April 23rd 2011. The new issue of the Radio Times with exclusive Doctor Who material is available in newsagents now.

Mervyn Stone Tweets at Act III

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 02:51 AM PDT

A new piece of Mervyn Stone news from his biographer, Nev Fountain:

'I am delighted to tell attendees of the Act III convention that they can all be part of the climax of Mervyn's latest murder mystery, currently being told on Twitter at @mervynstone.

I will be tweeting the end of The Pen is Mightier than the Nerd and, of course, the identity of the murderer, LIVE on stage, during the Big Finish panel on the 24th of April.

If anyone wants to guess at the identity of the murderer, they may tweet directly to Mervynstone until the start of the convention. Only one guess each, mind...

Out of those who guess correctly, one will be selected randomly to be written into the story and help in the unmasking of the murderer.

He or she will also get a signed photo of Mervyn Stone himself... assuming he's not been murdered by then.'

The first three stories detailing Mervyn Stone's faltering steps into the world of detection are available in hardback and leatherbound editions, and will be joined by a paperback this month.

Post Kapow Beard Illness Blog

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 02:23 AM PDT

I'be been ill, so I know, that isn't pretty. Only a week and a bit to go. I'll be pushing for some more cash at Eastercon, and there's still the business of dyeing it green... To respond to your comments on the site: indeed Gareth, I've found something else Larfleeze doesn't want; thanks to the Proud Lion comic shop for the donation from carrier bag sales and thanks Stefan!

The Kapow Comic Convention was very enjoyable, with the exception of the bug I picked up (possibly as a result of having shaken all those hands in two hours of signing). I didn't see as much of my UK comicker peers as I'd have liked, but it was great to catch up with my old editors Nick Lowe and Steve Whacker, and to be on a DC panel with Bob Wayne, Frank Quitely and Pete Milligan. The event itself seemed a creditable attempt to create a mid-size media/comics convention on the American model, without attempting to attract the huge anime audience that graces the MCM Expo.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was writing four pages of the special Superior comic that broke a Guinness World Record. One of them ended up being drawn by David Lafuente. I'll look out for my name in the next edition of the Guinness Book!

In other comics news, here's an interview with Pete Woods on his way out of Action Comics, where he's being lovely as always.

I'm looking forward to Illustrious in Birmingham, the Eastercon on the weekend after next. I'll be hosting the BSFA Awards, and also appearing on the following:

9pm, Friday, Space Over Time: 'How changes in our understanding of astrophysics and astronomy have changed the depiction of space in SF.' (It's great to be on a physics/lit panel.)

12pm, Saturday, Mirror Universe: 'Star Trek has its mirror universe but what would, say, the Paddington Bear mirror universe be like? Our creative panel discusses TV shows/books mirror universes nominated by the audience.' (Sounds fun.)

9pm, Saturday: A panel about audio SF.

10.30am, Sunday: A panel about comics for beginners. (I'll talk and talk.)

10.30am, Monday: And, just for a change, I'm playing rather than hosting Just A Minute!

And, date for your diary, my radio adaptation of Iain M. Banks' 'The State of the Art' will be repeated on BBC Radio 4 at 2.15pm on 29th April.

Anyhow, that's me for now, and until Eastercon, Cheerio!

Highlander Series Two Out Now

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:57 PM PDT

Released today is the second season of Highlander in one very swish little box set. It tells the story of Kronos, Silas, Caspian and Methos, otherwise known across the centuries as the Four Horsemen, and their fight against a powerful and dangerous foe holding several lifetimes of hatred for them.

The Horsemen first appeared in the Highlander: The Series two-parter Comes a Horseman/Revelations 6:8 and we've reunited the original actors - Valentine Pelka, Richard Ridings, Marcus Testory and Peter Wingfield - to return to their roles and deliver a dark, sinister and bloody tale that explores the long and varied histories of each Horseman. Add in the stunning vocal stylings of Toby Longworth, Tracy-Ann Oberman and John Banks and you have a cast to be revered throughout the ages.

Crossing the centuries, prepare for a journey into the minds of history's most evil men. Is there hope for redemption in any of them? How can the embodiments of War, Famine, Pestilence and Death be hurt? Find out in the four-CD and complete download set, available now.

As a bonus, there's also a free interview segment to download - but it contains spoilers, so be warned...

Apologies for the release being a little later than planned - but what's 13 days amongst immortals?

Gatiss on Series 6 Episode

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 07:00 PM PDT

Super-writer Mark Gatiss has spoken recently at London's Kapow! Comic Con about his two latest collaborations that are released this year, Sherlock and Doctor Who.

Working side by side with Steven Moffat on both, Gatiss first revealed some details about his newest co creation with Moffat, Sherlock, by revealing the three episodes that they will be adapting for a modern day retelling. We'll be treated to updated versions of A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Final Problem.

Interestingly enough, a 1982 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles starred Tom Baker as Sherlock Holmes himself! Regarding writing duties, Gatiss spoke about how the three tales were being portioned out and who would be writing them:

"Steve wanted to do the twisted love story [A Scandal in Bohemia], I'm doing the Gothic horror [Baskervilles] and Steve Thompson [who wrote Series 1's The Blind Banker] is doing The Final Problem."

Sounds like everyone is well suited to their individual scripts! Speaking of his Doctor Who script (possibly called What Are Little Boys Made Of?) for this year, Mark reflected on the fact that it was his first modern day story that he has written for the new series and talked briefly about what it would involve:

"It's set in a tower block, essentially about a little boy with kind of OCD whose parents are despairing of him because he's frightened of everything. And the Doctor turns up and tells him he's right…!"

Can't wait to see how that episode turns out!

A Doctor of Politics

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 06:43 PM PDT

Do the Doctor and politics mix? The Third Doctor was always something of an "establishment chap" and throughout his years, the Time Lord has always had connections within the political world. But where does Matt Smith stand with his views? Well, he's a bit coy about it to be honest.

Appearing on 5live's John Pienaar Politics podcast, Smith revealed no allegiance as such but more of an interest in the world of politics in general – something that has come to his attention since playing the role of a Labour researcher in the BBC drama Party Animals.

Focusing on recent budget cuts to the NHS and Shared Experience, a theatre company that recently had its £360,000 axed completely, the actor commented:

"Companies like Shared Experience were a way in for a lot of actors and directors and I think it's a shame…I believe the NHS needs to be protected. It's one of the few organisations in the world like it. It's always been very good to me – because I'm clumsy, frankly."

But Smith, who labels his own political views as "irrelevant" believes that Doctor Who does not necessarily have a specific political agenda as such but more an overall theme that it likes to comment on now and then:

"I don't think Dr Who [sic] is just about political investigations dramatically, it's about investigating the big ideas and big themes which can be recognised in politics."

Matt does reveal an interesting filming location for the new series – the Welsh Assembly, which was used for episode six which apparently has a huge cliff-hanger that leads onto episode seven.
