On Filming In Wales…

Posted: 26 Jun 2011 07:43 AM PDT

As we've reported firsthand, Torchwood: Miracle Day has been premiering to live audiences around the nation, which of course means that Cardiff, the birthplace of the show, was privileged with a screening earlier this week that had been particularly anticipated by many involved in the making of the series.

Executive Producer Russell T. Davies spoke excitedly at the event about the slightly-lessened (as compared to previous series) Welsh shooting.

"One of the first scenes in the first episode is at the (white National Trust) house in Rhossili. I spent my life wondering what it was like inside and I never thought we would get it, but lo and behold we managed it. It was a joy to film there and it looks epic and huge."

Gwen Cooper actress Eve Myles added this extra-mild spoiler:

"It was unbelievable to film at Rhossili, it was wonderful. I had always wanted to live at that house and the beach is where I walk my dog, so it was unbelievable to blow it up!"

Look at you, you've read this far and now you know what happens; in episode 1, Rhossili blows up. Sorry to ruin it for you.

See if anything else blows up when Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres with The New World on Friday, July 8th on Starz in the US and some unknown later date on BBC One in the UK.

Manning it Up

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 08:34 PM PDT

All right, Whovians, time to play a guessing game. Which performer is THE hot ticket in the Whoniverse right now? Is it Matt Smith? Nope. Karen Gillan? Nuh-uh. David Tennant? Not quite.

Betcha can't guess: it's Katy Manning.

"What," you ask, "the lass who played Jo Grant, the Doctor's companion from forty years ago?"

Yep. Didn't see that coming, did ya?

Gotta hand it to her though… for someone who was famous for a Dalek picture role she played all the way back in the 70s, she sure is staying active in her career and in the Whoniverse. For one thing, she was in Death of the Doctor, the third story in the most recent run of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and she's got a movie coming out in 2012 called The Haunting of Harry Payne. Right now she's starring in a stage production called Death By Fatal Murder (anyone suddenly reminded of The Curse of Fatal Death?), a spoof on Agatha-Christie-esque whodunits, as a rather bizarre woman named Blodwyn Morgan, a part that she learned after receiving the script just two weeks prior to opening night!

It's implied in a review of the play at Sarah-Jane.tv that Manning's lack of time for practice doesn't show at all in Death By Fatal Murder:

Katy Manning's performance was always going to be the thing I adored the most, and I have to say that she didn't disappoint. She has this fantastic ability to effortlessly change her voice to suit any character she's playing in an instant.

Sarah-Jane.tv also has a list of times and locations for this travelling show, which runs until November. Head over there and check it out, because Katy Manning may be coming to a stage near you!

Of course, there's still another way you can see the Jo Grant actress live and in person… at a convention! Or in a pub! Heck, you could go all out and meet her at a convention in a pub! You have a chance to do just that if you're able to be at the Lass O'Gowrie in Manchester on July 3rd for Vworp 4, where Manning joins such Who legends as Andrew Cartmel, Bob Baker, and the YouTube sensation that is the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre!

This is the page to visit for information on attending Vworp 4… and believe us, you don't want to miss it!

Where's Our Torchwood?

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 07:34 PM PDT

With its layers of intrigue, double bluffs and a silent, hidden Corporation waiting in the wings to strike you'd be mistaken for feeling that the MacGuffin for Torchwood: Miracle Day is pinpointing and locating someone at the BBC to clarify when the brand new series is going to air.

Predictably co-producers the Starz Network were always going to have first dibs when it came to who airs the show first but now other nations have the jump over the UK- with Canada, joining Australia, with the announcement that SPACE – the sci-fi network in Canada – and SPACE HD will also air the show before the UK.

According to Channel Canada the premiere of the fourth season which sees Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and what'sleft of Torchwood fight against an unknown enemy enforcing immortality on the human race will take place on the 9th July- a day after the American premiere

It's not entirely unreasonable to expect that a show which has made no bones about the fact that its American and British counterparts clashing will form part of its dramatic thrust would air in one of those nations before others got the chance to see it.

Details on just when the UK chapter of the Torchwood fraternity would see the new series have been vague to say the least.

Come the end of last Tuesdays BBC Radio 4 programme Front Row's interview with writer/creator Russell T. Davies host Mark Lawson happily announced that Jack and the gang would be heading to our screens next month (July) while at the Davies was both more exact and more vague commenting to On the Box that it would air somewhere around the 14th/15th of July.

Two dates which have already been confirmed by the BBC programme highlights for week 28 (which run from the 9th up to the 15th July) as being Torchwood free.

The official line on those highlights is that they are 'subject to change' but potentially the earliest Torchwood could air would be the 16th July leaving the UK a full week behind the American, Australian and now Canada.

Not only that, the 16th is also a Saturday which itself would be an odd time to schedule a show which has a distinctly post-watershed week night feel – potentially then we could be waiting until at least the 18th until Miracle Day finally airs.

By then of course this won't matter as most people will probably procure the episode (and the next one) via downloads and torrents- that is of course if their brave enough to switch on a computer and potential stumble upon a spoiler or twelve.

One possible saving grace against leechers and seeders is that the UK and US shows will contain different footage from one another.

DWM Editor Tom Spilsbury's Twitter page, meanwhile, indicates that both UK and US audiences will get extra content in the scramble to make each episode acceptable for the BBC's guidelines governing what UK audiences can and cannot and to trim the episodes down for advertisements on the Starz network in the US.
