A Boy Called The Doctor

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 05:52 AM PDT

Good Grief! Ever wondered what Doctor Who would be like if it wasn't the centrepiece of the BBC's Saturday night line-up and instead was a 1950′s syndicated American cartoon strip drawn by Charles Schulz?

Well wonder no-more Peanuts fans as artist Larry Wentzel has mushed together the worlds of Doctor Who and Peanuts together in a series of sketches replacing Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Linus, Franklin and Snoopy with the Doctor, Amy and a whole Pandorica worth of Villians.

The whole Schulzifying of Doctor Who was inspired by this t-shirt design which took its inspiration from the classic strips featuring the dubious psychiatric help of Lucy Van Pelt - usually being received by the hapless Charlie Brown.

See Larry Wentzel's photostream for more fantastic sketches!

Torchwood's Mixed Heritage

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 02:33 AM PDT

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies is very much in the limelight this month as he wanders from town to town to promote the latest series of one of his (many!) labours of love.

Miracle Day is sure to take the Torchwood universe in a bold new direction and will surely prove to be amazing story telling. But as Russell revealed in a recent interview with website Den of Geek, Torchwood has changed so much over the years, it's difficult to know what kind of path it will ever take, it's certainly one of the most "constantly reset" shows available to audiences (bar Doctor Who of course) and that means that it will always be fresh.

Including an American production team has certainly changed the way that the show is made and has given it a fresh new road to walk down, as Russell noted:

"We ended up with half the American and half a British system. In theory, the full American system is that you work out, on a whiteboard, every single detail of every single episode. I don't like it all worked out in advance for me. I like to go home and be able to invent stuff on the spot…the half British system was that once there was a good layout, but not a detailed layout of an episode. We send them off and tell them to write. "Go and do what you're paid to do. Go and be brilliant."

Torchwood Miracle Day will be aired in the US and Canada in July.

Ianto: “Every Minority”

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:11 PM PDT

Torchwood: Miracle Day is coming soon, and with it a new adventure, an overarching conspiracy that drags Captain Jack, Gwen Cooper and a couple of new team-mates into a bizarre world where something isn't quite right.

Obviously, Miracle Day follows on from the show's revised style that we first saw in Children of Earth, a five-part serial that has proved quite divisive for Torchwood fans.

While the new creative team behind Torchwood surely have some twists and turns up their sleeves for Miracle Day, many Torchwood fans are still reeling from the death of Captain Jack's "special friend" Ianto Jones in 2009's Children of Earth. In fact, more seemed put out by the fact that Ianto died rather than the fact that Jack sacrificed his own young grandson to save the world but as Davies explained:

"Ianto… he's every minority. He's minorities within minorities. Him being Welsh, of flexible sexuality. He's even got a dead girlfriend… But then the final item on that list is kill him, and sit back and watch the result, which is exactly what happened."

Let's hope for more emotional scenes like that in this year's Torchwood!
