| Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:54 AM PDT Fantastic news for all you fans of Big Finish, the company has just had their licence to produce original Doctor Who stories renewed for the next three years, meaning that we'll have more audio adventures from past Doctors and their friends up until at least 2014! The licence has been negotiated with AudioGO (the company that produces the Doctor Who soundtracks for the missing 60's stories and also the new eleventh Doctor audio readings) and we're promised a lot more exciting adventures from the Doctor Who universe. As well as the rest of this year's releases and the plans for next year, Big Finish promise not only new adventures for Doctors Five, Six, Seven and Eight but also a fourth and fifth series of Jago & Litefoot and another season of Lost Stories. If that isn't enough to get you excited and starting up a regular subscription the company also has their new range of Fourth Doctor stories launching next year starring legend Tom Baker and also Mary Tamm, Louise Jameson and John Leeson. After all these years of waiting, over a decade, the man himself is back! Also announced is a brand new spin off from Doctor Who which is in the works. No other details have been given as yet but you can bet it's going to be good. Executive producer at Big Finish and voice of the Daleks Nick Briggs commented:
Here's to a bright Doctor Who tinted future, and if this isn't enough for you to wake up and smell the Big Finish magic, then, we don't know what is… (With thanks to David Richardson.) | ||

| Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:16 PM PDT Matt Smith is to star in a new 90 minute BBC drama filming this summer that will explore the true-life story of two men whose partnership brought them gold medals in the 1948 London Olympics. Entitled Bert and Dickie, Smith will play the role Bert Bushell, who alongside Dickie Burnell won the double sculls rowing event. [Daily Mail, 1 Jul 2011; BBC Press, 26 May 2011] Currently in the States, Smith was also seen to don Batman's costume in Los Angeles! The actor appeared in a play called Gotham Autopsy, part of the 24 Hour Plays event. [Telegraph, 20 Jun 2011] David Tennant is expected to be at the UK premiere of his new film, Fright Night, which will take place at the O2 Arena in London on 14th August as part of the Empire Presents Big Screen festival. The film goes on general release on 2nd September. [The Wharf, 30 Jun 2011] John Barrowman discussed the perception of being gay in the acting industry and how it can be changed with more openness: "We still have a whole lot of people out there who are not openly gay because they think it's going to affect their jobs and stuff. Now I'm not out there to out people, and if that's what you choose to do, that's your choice, and I don't see anything wrong with that. But I must say, if you're doing it because you think it's detrimental to your career, the more of us who come out and do things openly – I guarantee you, there's a lot of us in Hollywood. And if we all just come out and don't worry about it – in fact, not even come out, just live. If we could just be ourselves and live and not pretend and not lie and not have beards, things would be a lot different. And the public, in a way, has to accept that stuff. If a big Hollywood A-lister came out, do you really think it's going to affect the films? People are not that stupid. And I think we need to give the people more power in that sense. There might be an area of society that will never believe it, will never want to believe it, but that's their choice. I don't have a choice, they do." [After Elton, 27 Jun 2011] Doctor Who's head writer Steven Moffat spoke to Wired about making the shows, and commented on writing for the character: "When the new Doctor has worked, he's been in tune with the times, yeah. I look at Tom Baker's Doctor and that's the '70s to me. It's nostalgic and wonderful. But because Doctor Who is an old show, it must never look old. It must always feel new. I'm not trying to make Doctor Who for the old fans. I'm trying to get the next generation of children to fall in love with the show." And on the audience: " It's a big fat mainstream hit in Britain, and if you've got a big hit, you have to keep romancing the casual viewer. Keeping people happy who watch it now and then—that's the hard part." [Wired, 28 Jun 2011] Torchwood's head writer Russell T Davies put forward his view on why cuts in things like the BBC licence fee affect culture: "that is truly something of great cultural value - it's very easy to say that a school is more important than a play, that a hospital is more important than a drama, and that's because we're talking a totally false language in which these things are comparable and one reduces the other - that's the language of economics that simply does not fit cultural life. Reflecting on recent comments made by prime minister David Cameron on cleaning up the watershed, he said: "I'm delivering Torchwood to BBC1, we're delivering these episodes with weekly edits, it has sex, it has violence in it - (the watershed) does seem more stringent than ever, I have to say. I've always thought if your drama depends on a sex scene or a swear word that it's possibly a very slightly odd drama: I think that's true of some dramas, something like Queer as Folk, that's actually quite rare so I don't think we should automatically take a stand of saying these things are automatically good, because you've got to take it as it comes. It does seem more diligent than ever, that's why I'm surprised he is saying it needs policing - it seems to be policed ever since as we all know, with Jonathan Ross and the whole of the BBC came tumbling around our ears, compliance has been mad; but no matter how mad compliance gets, with diligence with hard work and with a very very close eye on the guidelines you can get strong material transmitted, I do believe that." [Front Row, 21 Jun 2011] Writer Neil Gaiman (The Doctor's Wife) appeared on The Late Late Show, ostensibly to talk about his writing and the new series American Gods based on his books, but discussion inevitably veered towards Doctor Who, being a fan, and of course his episode this year! [The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, 28 Jun 2011, via Ferguson's YouTube Channel] Russell Tovey (Frame, Voyage of the Damned/The End of Time) will be playing the role of Henry Baskerville in the new adaptation of the classic Conan Doyle tale being made for Steven Moffat's other current series, Sherlock. [Russell Tovey on Twitter, 20 Jun 2011] Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson was recently revealed to own one of the old Doctor costumes worn by Sylvester McCoy (who has a role in Jackson's The Hobbit). Actress Frances Barber (recently seen as Madame Kovarian in A Good Man Goes To War) reported: "Sylvester and I were in Peter's house and he said: 'Look in that cabinet', in there was Sylvester's Dr Who costume. Peter bought it on eBay. Isn't that wacky?" [Express, 28 Jun 2011, reported from Doctor Who Insider] | ||

| Big Finish licence renewed to 2014 Posted: 30 Jun 2011 09:22 PM PDT We've had a fantastic working relationship with AudioGO, so we're very much looking forward to continuing that. Line producer David Richardson commented on how the planned ranges can continue for the next few years: The great news means that we can plan for the next three and a half years, and there's so much to look forward to. In addition to the Doctor Who Main Range and Companion Chronicles, there will be a fourth season of The Lost Stories, fourth and fifth seasons of Jago and Litefoot... and we'll be launching a brand new Doctor Who spin-off series too. Plus there's The Fourth Doctor Adventures starring Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Mary Tamm and John Leeson. It's never felt more exciting! Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery added: Doctor Who and the associated spin-off series have always been the cornerstone of the Big Finish audio ranges. We all greatly enjoy working on Doctor Who and it is great to see that AudioGO have shown such confidence in our contribution to the franchise by giving us this two year extension on our license. | Get Behind Big Finish, and Get Ahead! Posted: 30 Jun 2011 08:06 PM PDT Big Finish doesn't complain enough. Personally, I'd like to see the likes of Nick Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery do a lot more moaning and hollering when it comes to the job that they do. We are all lucky enough to live in the "Golden Age" of Doctor Who, not only do we have new television episodes each year but we're also treated to three official magazines a month, countless novels, comics by IDW, toys and figurines, dioramas, posters, clothing and last but very, very not least- a monthly range of audio adventures featuring Doctors, companions and enemies from the show's initial 26 year run and the TV movie. Big Finish is very important in the world of Doctor Who, during the wilderness years it was one of the organisations that kept the dream of the show alive and introduced the whole world to a more sophisticated idea and take on the show. The novels and the official Doctor Who Magazine did more than their fair share as well but it was back in the summer of 1999 when Sirens of Time was released that people started to get really excited again. To hear Doctors Five, Six and Seven altogether for the first time was nothing less than a Big Event. As if that's not enough, we then get the Daleks back in their first original (and enjoyable) story in over a decade, facing off against the Seventh Doctor in The Genocide Machine. The moment that Dalek "heartbeat" within their control started up, it sent a tingle down the spine of many a Who fan. And it was the first time that the Dalek voice started to give continuity to the creatures as well, Nicholas Briggs providing what is surely the ultimate in ring modulation. During subsequent Dalek adventures, the Daleks finally sounded uniform, something that had been missing in their television adventures. It was so good that Briggs was eventually drafted to voice the metal menaces when the show came back in 2005. Some Big Finish audios have even been converted into episodes for the new series. Rob Shearman created his episode Dalek from his Big Finish story Jubilee, Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel gives thanks to the Marc Platt Big Finish play Spare Parts. Relatively small time actor (at the time) David Tennant appeared in a fair few adventures as a guest star before signing up to become the tenth Doctor. New series writers including Paul Cornell and Mark Gatiss have written several Big Finish audios before Doctor Who came back to our screens not just because of their general talents but also because the company had faith that they would produce good scripts and boy were they right. Big Finish took the weight of the world on their shoulders and did it all with a beaming smile. Locking down contracts and scripts, getting all the actors involved with the productions (big names as well, some seemingly impossible!) and dedicating recording time to produce quality Doctor Who adventures for us each month. Let's remember as well, before we had story arcs and event episodes, Big Finish had signed Paul McGann up to recreate his role as the eighth Doctor and came up with one of the best season of adventures culminating in the fortieth anniversary epic Zagreus, a gargantuan effort for the production team, the writers and the actors. And yet after all of this and all of these years, it seems that the company still aren't as recognised as they should be. But do they ever moan? Do they ever stamp their feet? No, instead they produce amazing stories and continue to push the boundaries in what they can achieve. Finally signing up Janet Fielding to recreate her role as Tegan? No problems. New stories for old companions? Easy! Signing up Tom Baker to play the Fourth Doctor? Finally! Here's what to do: visit Big Finish today and purchase one of their stories. They aren't pricey and they're certainly worth it. Need some help deciding? Try starting with Invaders from Mars or Spare Parts or The One Doctor or Project: Twilight or Seasons of Fear or Legend of the Cybermen or…well, the list could go on and on but check them out if you haven't, this is where twenty first century Doctor Who really began. Visit www.bigfinish.com for special offers that are currently running. | ||
