| Big Finish's Doctor Who Licence Extended to 2014 Posted: 30 Jun 2011 04:35 PM PDT Big Finish is delighted to announce that its licence with AudioGO to make Doctor Who on audio has been extended for another two years, up to December 2014. "Doctor Who and the associated spin-off series have always been the cornerstone of the Big Finish audio ranges," says executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. "We all greatly enjoy working on Doctor Who and it is great to see that AudioGO have shown such confidence in our contribution to the franchise by giving us this two year extension on our license". "We've had a fantastic working relationship with AudioGO," adds executive producer Nick Briggs. "So we're very much looking forward to continuing that." "The great news means that we can plan for the next three and a half years," adds line producer David Richardson, "and there's so much to look forward to. "In addition to the Doctor Who Main Range and Companion Chronicles, there will be a fourth season of The Lost Stories, fourth and fifth seasons of Jago and Litefoot… and we'll be launching a brand new Doctor Who spin-off series too. "Plus there's The Fourth Doctor Adventures starring Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Mary Tamm and John Leeson. It's never felt more exciting!" | ||

| TARDIS travellers materialise at SDCC2011 Posted: 30 Jun 2011 08:43 AM PDT The two time travellers will be on a panel on Sunday 24th July, alongside writer Toby Whithouse and executive producers Beth Willis and Piers Wenger, as detailed below: 12:30 – 1:30 pm, BBC America's Doctor Who – Stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan make their first Comic-Con appearance for a panel and Q&A with Doctor Who writer Toby Whithouse (Being Human creator) and executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis. They're bringing with them exclusive new footage from the new episodes airing later this summer on BBC AMERICA. Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, the mysterious traveler who journeys throughout all of time and space, picking up companions along the way and almost always sidestepping danger. Doctor Who, from award winning lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, stars BAFTA nominee Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as his companion Amy Pond, along with Arthur Darvill as Rory and Alex Kingston who plays River Song. Part One of the new season, which premiered in April, delivered record ratings for BBC AMERICA and marked the first time Doctor Who filmed on American soil. Its finale ended with the unveiling of a massive secret and the words "Let's Kill Hitler" on screen. Part One of Doctor Who arrives on Blu-ray/DVD on July 19 and Part Two premieres late summer on BBC AMERICA's Supernatural Saturdays. | ||

| Posted: 30 Jun 2011 03:49 AM PDT Further stories in the sixth season of Companion Chronicles have been revealed, following Tales from the Vault (July), The Rocket Men (August), The Memory Cheats (September) and The Many Deaths of Jo Grant (October). November's release is The First Wave by Simon Guerrier, which stars Peter Purves and Tom Allen, and brings to an end the trilogy of adventures for Steven Taylor and First Doctor companion Oliver Harper. "It's a powerful story," says series producer David Richardson, "and it features the Doctor's first encounter with the Vardans – the aliens that would later invade Gallifrey in The Invasion of Time." December brings a fun return for the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker), Crystal (Claire Huckle) and Jason (Noel Sullivan) in Beyond the Ultimate Adventure – Terrance Dicks's sequel to his original stageplay. "There are no songs in this one," David promises, "but it's a jolly romp with the travellers off on a dangerous mission and facing up to a new enemy, and even the odd Raston robot and Rutan along the way." As has now become traditional, January brings a double disc release performed by two companions. 2012's offering is The Anachronauts by Simon Guerrier, starring Jean Marsh as Sara Kingdom and Peter Purves as Steven Taylor. The Selachian Gambit arrives in February, as Steve Lyons writes a new adventure for his popular shark monsters (last heard in Big Finish's The Architects of History). The story is performed by Frazer Hines as Jamie and Anneke Wills as Polly, both under siege in a bank vault in the far future. Caroline John returns as Liz Shaw in March, in Binary by Eddie Robson. "Binary is a break from form for the series," says David. "Last year's Solitaire took a step away from narrative readings and was a dialogue-driven two hander between two characters. This one follows a similar format, centred on Liz and two UNIT soldiers." The Wanderer by Richard Dinnick follows in April, read by William Russell as Ian Chesterton. The series rounds off in May and June 2012, with titles and performers yet to be confirmed. | ||

| PodKast Without a “C” Posted: 30 Jun 2011 02:51 AM PDT Taking a week off from the podKast (with a "K"), I was delighted to find that Brian and the other chap (James McLean, who else?) had done such a good job that I'm currently contemplating retirement! After all, what is a chap to do when his two subordinates are getting along very well without him? Sit back, I say, and let them get on with it. This time around, the discussion covers Torchwood scheduling, and some interesting views about the differences and similarities between the Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat eras of Doctor Who. Unsurprisingly, you will find nothing at all about Winnie the Pooh, Edgar Rice Burroughs or Voltaire, but of course, this is a Doctor Who podKast (with a "K"), so what do you expect…? Remember that in addition to the player above you can subscribe to the RSS feed or even find the podKast in iTunes, where we have attracted a couple of pleasing reviews! Feel free to leave us some feedback in the comments below or to add your thoughts to the iTunes listing! | ||

| Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer Posted: 30 Jun 2011 02:37 AM PDT A new book celebrating the Eighth Doctor's adventures on audio is to be published later this year, to tie in with the next series from Big Finish this Autumn. The book is by Will Brooks and Nick Mellish, and will be published by Pageturner Publishing. For a Doctor that only made one TV appearance, in the 1996 TV Movie, the Eighth Doctor has lead a long and eventful life on audio. Since 2001, Big Finish have produced more than sixty audio plays featuring Paul McGann giving the character a life beyond the small screen. In Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer, two dedicated Doctor Who fans set out to listen to each of these audio plays, one episode a day every day, in an attempt to experience a true 'Eighth Doctor Era'. Along the way they discover the highs and lows of the series, from 2001's Storm Warning through to 2011's To the Death, via a short series of Sixth Doctor plays featuring ongoing companion Charley Pollard. Written by Will Brooks (Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space) and Nick Mellish (Nick's Little Bit of Net), sometimes examining the literary origins of the Eighth Doctor's adventures, sometimes commenting on the strength of a story, and sometimes merely praising (or otherwise) a particular cast member, Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer is the definitive account of two fan's experiences of the Eighth Doctor's travels in time and space. You can read a preview of the book here. Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer is due to be published on 10th October and is available for pre-order from the publishers; a version for the Amazon Kindle will be available once the book is released. Everyone who pre-orders before 1st September will have their name printed in the book as a special thanks. (with thanks to Will Brooks) | ||
