| Posted: 11 Jul 2011 07:51 AM PDT You would be forgiven for thinking that this was yet another commentary about the Series 6 split, but in fact we've just foudn out that comedian and writer Ricky Gervais' new sitcom series will feature an appearance by the Daleks and possibly even a Doctor… Life's Too Short stars actor Warwick Davis – well known for many roles such as the Star Wars trilogy and Willow, not to menion the Harry Potter films – playing a caricature of himself, and like The Office and Extras comes from the pen of Gervais and partner in crime Stephen Merchant. Little is known so far, but with plenty of images of Daleks and Ricky in a police box, it seems likely that the hints are pointing to another affectionate dig at Doctor Who…
It should be good… …and if it isn't we'll still have this from the Extras episode which guest starred David Tennant as the Doctor. (Via TVOvermind)

| Posted: 10 Jul 2011 11:16 PM PDT Former Doctor Who boss and Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has recently put worried minds at rest concerning the oft-mooted possibility of an American-produced series. Following the migration of Torchwood to a pan-Atlantic co-production, the more pessimistic and cynical fans among us have been bemoaning this move as a sign of things to come, a test bed for a future collaborative production of Doctor Who. While such a venture might finally extinguish the memories of what might have been back in 1996, the fallout from the TV Movie – a much loved but nevertheless disappointing failure – is still enough to discourage most fans. Speaking to Radio Times, Russell T Davies confirms this isn't something that we need to worry about any time soon.
Readers with long memories will recall that an insane rumour concerning an American Doctor Who starring Johnny Depp was doing the rounds last year, so it is good to see an official word coming from someone who would likely be one of the main players in such a production…

| Bif Bang Pow! Comic Con Exclusives Posted: 10 Jul 2011 10:32 PM PDT Its San Diego Comic Con time- that wretched hive of scum and villainy- and you know what that means? Tat! And lots of it! But in the midst of all that are a few items worth queuing behind a Klingon with poor hygiene for.
In there entire range- from Doctor Who to Dexter via The Twilight Zone- chances are that if it has a head, it'll bobble. Something that doesn't have a head is the TARDIS but that hasn't stopped them from releasing the resin Comic-Con exclusive TARDIS bobble head – a Tom Baker era TARDIS which stands about 6 3/4-inches tall on a themed base and wobbles to the dematerialising sounds of time travel which will set you back $22. More promising is the near 9 inch Doctor Who TARDIS Tin Tote – a metallic lunch box in the shape of the TARDIS that you wouldn't want near your lunch which will set you back $15. Both items are limited to 3000 units. However this has been mere foreplay (if your foreplay does include bobble heads and tin lunch boxes then you might want to question your life choices) when compared to the Fourth Doctor & Sontaran Field-Major Styre from The Sontaran Experiment. Each stands at eight inches tall, come with full articulation and retro 70's style fabric and are available at both the San Diego and New York Comic Cons with each again limited to 3000 units. Both items are available for pre-order at $39.99 each with the Fourth Doctor set shipping from August 2011 and the Cyber Leader giving chase in November 2011. The TARDIS bobble head is available to pre-order in November 2011 for $21.99 with the TARDIS Lunch Box coming in August 2011 for $12.99
| Doctor Who is an average person's favourite show Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT An "alternative census" has been carried out in the UK to determine what constitutes the "average" person's life in the United Kingdom, and reports that Doctor Who is the programme they most like to watch! The survey was undertaken in over 2000 households by energy management service AlertMe, with chief executive officer of the company Mary Turner explaining: The government census tells us information that is quite run-of-the-mill. We wanted to find out the bare bones of people's everyday behaviour. Looking into daily lives, the report uncovered snippets such as favourites foods of the week (with fish and chips being the obvious Friday winner), families eating together three times a week (at 5:54pm!), and generally getting home from work at 5:15pm. Eight out of ten families consider themselves to be "happy" or "very happy", with 70% of adults considering their household as "completely normal". Half of families surveyed also indicated that television is their main form of entertainment, with a typical family tuning in for some nine hours a day and citing Doctor Who as their favoured show. The survey also found that the average person gets up at 6:57pm and goes to bed at 10:50pm - so there's no reason to miss Torchwood this coming Thursday! | ||
| My San Diego Schedule (Updated!) Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:00 PM PDT I've just got back from a brilliant, exhausting weekend at the seventh Faringdon Arts Festival, which was all about luxuriating in my former hometown and enjoying the talent it nurtures, notably the r'n'b orchestra that my wife used to be in, Boogie Me, who played out the Festival to much applause and dancing from a packed market place. I also popped up to see the first ball bowled at the new cricket ground, which is going to be officially opened by Sir Viv Richards (!) in September. It's a good feeling for me that I helped start a Festival which is now continuing healthily under new management, its roots having been forgotten, it having become just one of those things that seem to happen every year, and will probably soon get called, in the way the British have, 'ancient'. Anyhow, now I'm back at my desk, hungover, sunburnt and a bit achy, it's time to confirm what I'm doing at the San Diego Comic Con this year. (Well, what I'll be doing that the public can come and see. My dance card is already getting full with meetings, meals and parties.) On Thursday, 21st July, at 11am, I'll be signing at the DC Booth (#1915). Then at 2pm, I'll be on the New 52 panel with my bosses, Dan DiDio, Bob Harras and Eddie Berganza, and doubtless many other creators, in Room 6DE. On Friday, 22nd July, at 11am, I'll again be signing at the DC Booth. On Saturday, 23rd July, at 11am, I'll be signing at the SFX Magazine booth (#1502). Then at 12.45pm, I'll be on DC: The Dark and The Edge in Room 6DE, which covers Stormwatch and Demon Knights, hosted by the editor of the former, Pat McCallum, and with luminaries such as Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire and Josh Fialkov also present. At 3pm, I'll again be signing at the DC Booth. Then, at 5.30 pm, I'll be on the 24th Annual Gays in Comics panel in Room 6A, run by founding moderator Andy Mangels, with Robert Kirkman, Greg Pak and many others along for the ride, including a video appearance by J.H.Williams III. I'll also do my best to hang around for the Mixer afterwards, depending on what else requires me to be elsewhere, and I'll be providing something for the charity auction. On Sunday, 24th July, I'll be on the Wild Cards panel in Room 6 BCF, with George R.R. Martin, Melinda Snodgrass, Carrie Vaughan, David Anthony Durham and many more of my fellow Wild Cards writers. And that's it! Well, so far, anyway. Until next time, Cheerio! | ||
| Posted: 10 Jul 2011 05:44 PM PDT Our review of Torchwood: Miracle Day episode one, The New World, may contain spoilers for anyone yet to see it, so tread carefully! Torchwood has always been a bit of a hit and miss series with me, and after watching the first installment of the Miracle Day story line, The New World, I am not sure if this one will start to show signs of life or die on the operating table. Last time we saw the Torchwood team we were embroiled in the 456 incident, and honestly Children Of Earth really was the best Torchwood series yet, with all of the shoed in adult themes such as sex, gore and violence that at times tainted the first two Torchwood series only being used to move the story forward, not just because it could. Miracle Day would seem to be using the same tried and tested formula as its predecessor with the still-living corpse of the bombing victim and Rex Matheson's odd swear word being used in context to the story, with the effect that (unlike with "classic" Torchwood) it's effect is not one that seems cheap or contrived. However, despite all the joy at seeing Gwen (Eve Myles), Rhys, Andy and of course Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) back in action, the first episode seems to suffer from being the first baby step of a much larger and complex plot. This episode is designed to make us aware of the immediate situation the team faces, let us catch up with old friends and introduce some new ones along the way. It does accomplish this goal but not in a manner that took hold of you and instilled a sense of mystery and the "I must know what happens next" mentality like the first installment of Children of Earth. While discovering the entire planet cannot die seemingly by any means we also find out the Captain Jack has been reverted to being a mortal Human male who can indeed be hurt, cut and bruised and also one would assume be killed. I feel personally that unless there is a reason for doing so, this was stated outwardly much too early in the narrative, it might have been better to try to keep as much of an air of suspense as possible to get viewers hooked whether they are Torchwood veterans or a new casual viewer on the Starz network. This is not to say that this episode is a failure, it did as said introduce the common concepts, relationships and events that we will be dealing with as this series moves forward. Russell T Davies has never lacked an ability to bring fictional people to life from the script to the screen and The New World is no exception, with Matheson (Mehki Pfifer) and company being excellent additions to the covert, rough and tumble roster of gun toting heroes Torchwood does so well. As far as overall concepts go Miracle Day shows a lot of promise and strength as Andy and Gwen's discussion on the repercussions of people not dying day after day for a prolonged period of time are really a testament as to how great this concept is and how many opportunity's there are for some really memorable moments and scenes. Of course, it remains to be seen if the series can manage to bring this to fruition, but hey, anything is possible. After all, the series is called Miracle Day, isn't it? |
