| The Daleks Invade Earth Again! Posted: 13 Jul 2011 09:14 AM PDT The latest promotional escapade for the Doctor Who Experience is their most audacious yet – a recreation of the classic Westminster Bridge scene from the 1964 classic The Dalek Invasion of Earth! It should come as no surprise that this iconic image has already been replicated several times before, most notably by the Radio Times for their award winning "Vote Dalek!" cover of 2005, but the Doctor Who Experience have gone one better and used the actual location rather than a backdrop. You can see the results below, along with a black and white reference shot from the 1964 serial which starred William Hartnell, William Russell, Jacqueline Hill and Carole Ann Ford. If you haven't visited the Doctor Who Experience, or were unaware, the event is based at Earl's Court in London, and offers you the opportunity to step inside the TARDIS to take a starring role in your very own Doctor Who adventure! Within the experience you will also find special scenes filmed with current Doctor Matt Smith which combine amazing special effects and the chance to enter a recreation of the modern TARDIS interior topped off by a breathtaking 3-D finale. For more details, head to www.doctorwhoexperience.com – also, don't forget our review of the event from earlier this year. | ||

| Moffat: Doctor Who Will Always Be British Posted: 13 Jul 2011 05:41 AM PDT First Russell T. Davies shot down the idea of BBC Worldwide ever going halfsies with the USA and co-producing Doctor Who in a similar vein to spin-off Torchwood: Miracle Day but now – thanks again to our French correspondent Aurélie Demonchaux – Steven Moffat has weighed in with a characteristic response. Speaking to French television show "J'irai Loler sur vos tombes" (which translates into the frankly awesome "I Will Lol on your Graves": How exactly do you laugh out loud on someone's grave?) during his recent trip to France for the Paris Comic Con Moffat said he could never imagine anything other than the quintessentially British version of Who ever existing. The interview with Moffat begins at the 16 minute mark- followed by a French version of Doctor Who (in French) which is completely baffling but does feature the Doctor slapping the man who invented the Rubic's Cube. | ||

| Doctor Who Boosts BBC profits in the 2011 Annual Review Posted: 13 Jul 2011 01:03 AM PDT BBC Worldwide have published their Annual Review for 2011 which highlights Doctor Who as one of the 'most valuable' brands, largely responsible for the corporations commercial success. The report showed pre-tax profits rose 59pc to &ound;201.2m, or &ound;188m following disposals, on revenues up 7.8pc to &ound;1.16bn. The Doctor Who franchise saw revenues climb 49pc, following significant growth in the US. It is now sold to more than 50 territories. Doctor Who was also the number-three TV series purchased globally on iTunes in 2010/11. BBC's Worldwide's top five power brands include Top Gear, Doctor Who, Lonely Planet, Dancing with the Stars and BBC Earth. Headline sales from these brands were &ound;308.1m, a rise of 12.6pc year-on-year. The corporation also notes in the report how it has embraced the online social avenues. John Smith, the chief executive of BBC Worldwide, said Worldwide will increasingly use Facebook to both market and sell its content and events. Doctor Who episodes will be available for Facebook users in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and episodes will be available to view for 48 hours. [Source: BBC Worldwide] | ||

| Posted: 12 Jul 2011 11:09 PM PDT Whilst chatting away to promote the latest series of Torchwood, actor John Barrowman has revealed his thoughts about the identity of his show.
We're paraphrasing here but the point stands that the actor is incredibly accurate. When Russell T Davies and his mob created Torchwood back in 2006, the show was much more of a direct spin off. You can see that Davies had the whole Buffy/Angel idea in his head and wanted to play that out as he has gone on record as being a big fan. Torchwood started life very similarly to Angel. The handsome warrior relocating to another part of the world to fight the good fight, with a tortured soul and a mysterious past, trying to do good even though he has committed a multitude of sins. The first series even contains the same style of "sweeping over the city" shots that the Angel camera crew liked to do! But that all changed from the second series, as Torchwood found its footing it couldn't help but evolve. The show we now look forward to is in the format that it always should have been. Yes, it's a spin off from Doctor Who but it's a very loose connection – it's a big universe out there and everyone's story is different. This is where the first series fell down slightly; it was trying too hard to be something that it really wasn't. So here's to Torchwood being a different show to Doctor Who. Something that grew from it but is emphatically not the same at all. You might say that it developed a new life in The New World. Long may it continue. | ||
