| Karen Gillan's West End Theatre Debut Posted: 23 Jul 2011 10:24 AM PDT The play is to be performed at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre and will be directed by Jamie Lloyd. Gillan will play the character of Shirley, the hard-done-by secretary to middle-aged laywer Bill Maitland, to be played by Douglas Hodge; other cast members include Esther Hall, Amy Morgan, Daniel Ryan, and Al Weaver. The Daily Mail reported that Lloyd had been very impressed with the Doctor Who actress: Karen read twice for him at auditions and he was impressed with her charisma and her natural instincts. "More importantly, she can do the text convincingly and she feels as if she comes from that Sixties British Mad Men world," Lloyd added. Originally performed in 1965 on Broadway, the play featured Nicol Williamson as Maitland and Jeanne Hepple as Shirley. It was subsequently made into a film with Williamson reprising the role alongside Eileen Atkins in 1968. Synopsis: Bill Maitland, a middle aged lawyer, struggles to avoid the harsh truths of his life and keep a hold on reality. As those closest to him begin to draw away, he puts himself on trial to fight for his sanity. The play runs from 13th October to 26th November - for more details see the theatre website. | ||

| Eccleston Expands on Reasons for Leaving Posted: 23 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT In comments to students at an acting master class in London, and reported by Bad Wilf, he told of how he left the series after falling out with those in charge of the show. I left Doctor Who, because I could not get along with the senior people. I left, because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye, with them. I didn't agree with the way things were being run. I didn't like the culture that had grown up, around the series. So, I left. I felt, over a principle. I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay, was to eat a lot of shit. Despite his reasons for leaving Eccleston is still proud of what he achieved in the role. I'm not being funny about that. I didn't want to do that and, it comes to the art of it, in a way. I feel that if you run your career and-we are vulnerable as actors and, we are constantly humiliating ourselves auditioning. But, if you allow that to go on, on a grand scale. You will loose, whatever it is about you and, it will be present in your work. If you allow your desire to be successful and visible and financially secure – if you allow that to make you throw shades on your parents, on your upbringing, then you're knackered. You've got to keep something back, for yourself, because it'll be present in your work. A purity or an idealism is essential or you'll become– you've got to have standards, no matter how hard work that is. So it makes it a hard road, really. You know, it's easy to find a job when you've got no morals, you've got nothing to be compromised, you can go, 'Yeah, yeah. That doesn't matter. That director can bully that prop man and I won't say anything about it'. But then when that director comes to you and says 'I think you should play it like this' you've surely got to go 'How can I respect you, when you behave like that?' So, that's why I left. My face didn't fit and I'm sure they were glad to see the back of me. The important thing is that I succeeded. It was a great part. I loved playing him. I loved connecting with that audience. Because I've always acted for adults and the suddenly, your acting for children. Who are far more tasteful, they will not be bullshitted. It's either good, or it's bad. They don't schmooze at after show parties, with cocktails. During the master-class Eccleston revealed that he had recently been informed that he was a victim of phone hacking during his time as the Doctor, and he said will be taking legal action against the parties involved. | ||

| Posted: 23 Jul 2011 04:49 AM PDT Another year and another Comic Con is upon us. It seems like only yesterday we were watching David Tennant strut his funky stuff on the stage, gathering huge rounds of applause and giving subtle hints about the Tenth Doctor's final adventures. This time round, we had the weird and wonderful Matt Smith illuminating the stage with his quirky personality as he talked about Doctor Who and captivated the audience with his natural charm! Matt was on a panel alongside stars of the fantasy television show True Blood (the one with vampires and werewolves and all that…what?…no, not Twilight!) and proved that even stars in a show as big as Doctor Who can get starstruck as he commented "I get to sit next to Pam and Lafayette!". Matt's a True Blood fan?! Receiving a huge number of questions from the audience, which Matt answered with his usual diligence, one such question that was asked was whether Captain Jack Harkness would return, to which the actor replied:
The Eleventh Doctor trying to keep Captain Jack in line? That'd be worth seeing. When asked about the second half of series six, which is due to air later this year, Matt made some interesting comments to dwell on:
For all of you who are able to attend, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan alongside writer Toby Whithouse and executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Wills will make up a panel for a Q and A session in Hall H. | ||

| You've Never Had A Hangover Like This... Posted: 23 Jul 2011 04:11 AM PDT ![]() Anjli Mohindra to appear in a production of The Curse of the Devil's Verse, by Nic Harvey, at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe from the 3rd to the 13th of August. Rob is an ordinary bloke, spending his days lifting heavy objects around and talking about cars over a pint, he struggles to see the value of his girlfriend Lucy's quest to become a writer. Storming off to the pub after another argument with her, Rob rages loudly and drunkenly against the state of modern male/female relations and those who champion creativity. Unfortunately he's arrived on poetry night, and a mysterious stranger has more than a few wise words of advice for Rob... Waking alone in the morning with no memory of the previous night and the mother of all headaches, Rob discovers he can only speak in perfectly-formed rhyming couplets. Humiliated at home and at work, Rob must tackle his sensitivity issues head-on to drive out the ancient curse and become a new-age man. The production is presented to you by Sheep Soup, a theatre company formed in association with Nottingham's BAFTA award-winning Television Workshop. Bringing together the most promising young actors and creative talent from the region, the company is led and developed by its diverse and ever-changing field of collaborators. The Curse of the Devil's Verse is a lively, silver-tongued new comedy, a surreal drama laced with the perils of everyday life. Poetry, spoken word, disco dancing, psychiatry and whipped cream all come together for Sheep Soup's Fringe debut. This revival for the Fringe 2011 stars Anjli Mohindra, more commonly known as Rani from The Sarah Jane Adventures, and members of The Television Workshop. Tickets can be booked for the 50 minute production, at 6.45, through the Fringe box office on 0131 226 0000 or Online here. | ||

| Doctor Who in Comics Exhibition Posted: 22 Jul 2011 10:12 PM PDT A really fantastic exhibition of Doctor Who comic strips is set to open over the next few days, featuring the Doctor in all of his sequential art guises from TV Comic through to the America Doctor Who comic books from IDW. Doctor Who in Comics: 1964-2011 takes place at the Cartoon Museum from July 27th to October 30th, features over 100 works and is the first to showcase the Doctor in his many incarnations, demonstrating how the character has evolved in comics over the last 47 years. The museum hopes that during the exhibition the public will help solve the mystery of who created a number of early comic pages including iconic images of the Daleks and Davros. The show includes all eleven Doctors – plus his early film incarnation played by Peter Cushing. Doctor Who in Comics is of course intimately connected to the TV programme, but the comic stories have also taken fans on imaginative and far‐flung adventures which would have been way beyond the budget and special effects capacity of the BBC. Frames from The Crimon Hand illustrated by Martin Geraghty, David Roach, James Offredi. From Dalek Omnibus, 1976, artist unknown. Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks, artist unknown. It is amazing to consider that the Doctor has been appearing in comics for 47 years and has been drawn by many great comic artists including Frank Bellamy, Martin Geraghty, Dave Gibbons, Dave Lloyd, John Ridgway and Lee Sullivan. Between 1989 and 2005, when the programme was off the air, apart from a one‐off TV film in 1996, the Doctor lived on in comics, the only place where fans could continue to see their hero in new adventures. While Doctor Who first appeared on BBC television on 23 November 1963, what is less well known is that on 14 November 1964 the Doctor featured in his own strip in TV Comic and he has continued to appear in comics in every year since. In 1979 he finally got his own title with the arrival of Doctor Who Weekly, the publication that became Doctor Who Magazine, the biggest selling SF magazine in the UK. In his comic life the Doctor was sometimes ahead of his time. In 1980 he was accompanied by his first black companion Sharon – 25 years before Mickey Smith or Martha Jones appeared on screen. Favourite villains such as the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master make several appearances and many important characters such as Sarah Jane Smith, K‐9, Brigadier Lethbridge‐Stewart, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Martha Jones and Amy Pond all feature. The exhibition features plenty of examples of how the comics have influenced the TV show, such as original illustrations from the 2006 story which went on to inspire the famous TV episode Blink, and artwork from the only story to be written by a 'Doctor' – The Age of Chaos by the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker. The Usual Suspects Revisited, Lee Sullivan. From the Brilliant Book of Doctor Who, illustration by Martin Geraghty. From the Tides of Time, illustrated by Dave Gibbon. Visitors to the exhibition will find samples from stories that first appeared in classic publications such as TV Comic, and TV Century 21 as well as Doctor Who Weekly, Doctor Who Monthly, Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures and the American Doctor Who magazine. Additionally, the museum is also running special Doctor Who themed workshops for kids over the summer. Artists whose work appears in the exhibition includes: Frank Bellamy, Doug Braithwaite, Mark Buckingham, Mike Collins, John Canning, Paul Crompton, Vincent Danks, Al Davison, Dave Gibbons, Steve Dillon, Martin Geraghty, Paul Grist, Gerry Haylock, Walt Howarth, Dicky Howett, Richard Jennings, Daryl Joyce, Roger Langridge, Dave Lloyd, Paul Neary, John Ridgway, John Ross, Andrew Skilleter, Ben Templesmith, Ron Turner, Barrie Mitchell, Adrian Salmon, Lee Sullivan and Andy Walker. You really have no excuse not to attend this fantastic collection, which runs from July 27th to October 30th at The Cartoon Museum, 35 Little Russell Street, London, WC1A, 2HH. Opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30-17.30, Sunday 12-17.30, and admission for adults is £5.50 – under 18s enter free. Find out more at www.cartoonmuseum.org. (With thanks to Anita) | ||

| Caroline Skinner's ‘Baptism of Fire' Posted: 22 Jul 2011 07:57 PM PDT Most people's first day at a new job consists of awkward greetings and being handed all the tedious menial jobs that no-one wants- Well not on Moffat's watch! New Executive Producer Caroline Skinner (Five Days) has been promised a baptism of fire when she takes over. Speaking to the BBC's Doctor Who site Moffat praised his new 'Prime Minister'- calling her out as one of those rare breed of producers that the show needs:
Skinner's first episode will be the Christmas special – working alongside the departing Piers Wenger (who heads to Film4 Productions) and both are looking for a big bang to signal the end/beginning of a new era. Wenger, just like Russell T. Davies, though won't leave the show to just anyone:
Just what is happening with the Christmas Special is a matter of conjecture but as far as the words on the page go Moffat hasn't made life easy for his Exec's:
