| Series 6 Part 2 Trailer Breakdown! Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:56 AM PDT So you've been watching the new trailer for Series 6, Part 2 solidly since its release, eh? Well, just in case you've missed something vital… They say a picture can tell a thousand words. Here's 22,000 (I make it closer to 1200 – Ed). "Follow that nurse": As Rory seemingly proves in episode eight, Let's Kill Hitler: Yes, he can ride a motorbike. "Stay out of trouble… badly": What resides in Room 11? The God Complex sees the Doctor and co. come face-to-face with their biggest fears. Writer, Toby Whithouse has said: "Each room contains a different nightmare. Some of these nightmares are the personal nightmares of the Doctor, Amy and Rory and the people in there, and other ones are nightmares of the people who have been in the maze before and died there." "KBO, of course": Ian McNiece is back as Winston Churchill, probably in one of the two as-yet-unnamed final episodes of the series. Churchill was last seen onscreen in 2010's The Pandorica Opens, keeping a painting by Vincent Van Gogh storage, ready to warn the Doctor of the TARDIS exploding. "No, sorry, what's happening? Are you going to live with monkeys now?": James Cordon returns as Craig Owens in episode twelve, by Gareth Roberts. Take a look at Doctor Who: The Brilliant Book 2011, pages 98-99; maybe this time we'll see Craig's mum, his ex-flatmate, Mark or Captain Troy Handsome… "Prepare to engage": This is Gibbis, played by David Walliams. No stranger to prosthetics, Walliams is a self-proclaimed Doctor Who fan! Let's hope he survives the experience. "I am definitely Mr Grumpy-Face today": Daniel Mays, best known as the evil Jim Keats in Ashes to Ashes, will play Alex in Mark Gatiss' Night Terrors. He doesn't look the heroic type, does he? "Everybody's got enemies": It looks as if Amy's main enemy isn't the woman outside Budgens with the mental Jack Russell anymore. Badder than bad, Madam Kovarian (Frances Barber) was always going to return, wasn't she? "I'm going to die": Episode twelve beckons the return of the Cybermen, last seen being threatened by Rory The Roman in A Good Man Goes to War. Looks like revenge is on the cards. (Cybermats not pictured.) "Oh, look at you! Five years later and you haven't changed a bit, apart from age and… size": Wow. Amy Pond has either aged quite a bit or had an allergic reaction. Either way, that's one odd-looking costume. This shot could be from episode ten, Tom MacRae's The Girl Who Waited. "Thank you. I think you have just saved my life": Albert Welling plays… well, you can probably guess who and in which episode. "I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams": Nice one, Doctor; looks as if you've just saved Hitler's life. In 1930s Berlin, maybe Hitler has to be saved to maintain the time stream. Still. Saving Hitler. Not one to boast about. And lest we forget to mention the Doctor's new (though probably short-lived) jacket. Matt Smith's previously mentioned wanting a long, flowing coat, but remember: harris-tweeds are cool. "I am definitely a madman with a box": It's the TARDIS, and it's apparently crashing through a window. What more do you want? "The Legs, The Nose and Mrs. Robinson": You remember when Donna suddenly appeared, or when the Titanic crashed into the TARDIS and the Doctor exclaimed, "What? What? What?" Feel free to do that now. Yes, that's River Song with a Kovarian-style eye-patch. Yes, that's a sarcophagus behind her. No, it's not Autumn yet. This looks like episode twelve, which also features Craig, Sophie, the Cybermen and probably something Egyptian. In the search for Melody Pond, does the TARDIS team find a very different River Song? "The Pandorica will open, and Silence will fall": Haven't we seen you somewhere before? The Silence were last seen being gunned down by River, but warnings about them have been stretched across the series ever since Moffat took control. The Saturnyne (from Vampires of Venice) "ran from The Silence" and while the Doctor was imprisoned, they caused the universe to end by blowing up the TARDIS. Now what are they up to…? And, looking at the bubbles rising, could Matt Smith be getting his wish in this episode (most probably the series finale)? In Doctor Who: The Brilliant Book 2011, he told Darren Scott he'd like to pilot the TARDIS to Atlantis: "I think it's the mythology of the sea for me, really, which is amazing… I like the idea that it's all underwater; it has a magic to it." … Sorry, what were we saying? "That which holds the image of an Angel becomes itself an Angel": The Weeping Angels are back. The blink-and-you'll-miss-'em aliens first appeared in series three and returned in last year's two-parter, The Time of Angels/ Flesh and Stone. They'll probably be in The God Complex as somebody's nightmare made real. At the series six press launch (all those moons ago), Steven Moffat said: "You make Doctor Who frightening to appeal to children, and children absolutely rank Doctor Who stories in order of frightening-ness. That's what it's all about. The jokes and the silly bits; they're for adults. But the scares are in for the kids." Oh, and sorry about the image. You'll be fine: just don't blink. "Trust the plastic": Doctor Who has a history of creepy dolls. Feel free to make jokes about Dapol all you want, but we were thinking more of Terror of the Autons in which a troll gave children nationwide (and Mary Whitehouse) nightmares for weeks on end. Little is known about Mark Gatiss' Night Terrors, but it's fair to say the special effects will be better than 1970s CSO. "Y'know, this isn't nearly as bad as it looks": Another scare from The God Complex. We've seen Minotaurs before; maybe this one's a further evolved Nimon? I know, I know; don't even joke about it. "Of course, if you muck it up, I am going to be really cross. And dead": Run, Rory! This looks pretty scary… Okay, so not the Nimon then. Is Rory wearing the same shirt in The God Complex as he is in Let's Kill Hitler? The last time anyone wore the same checkered shirt twice, they turned out to be Flesh… "Your country salutes you": Rory punches Hitler. Need we say more? "An impossible astronaut will rise from the deep and strike the Time Lord dead": On the TARDIS monitor, the Doctor gets us back up to speed. As if we could forget. "Would you like me to repeat the question?": Forget 'heads will roll'; when the Cybermen are about, heads will explode. Yes, it looks pretty spectacular, but just for once, can we see a Cyber-death of old – a shaky yell, dramatic clenched fist and a tentative fall?! "Haven't you figured that one out yet?": Who is the astronaut? Who is the good man River kills? What's the Silence's plan? Exactly which 'one' question are you referring to, Doctor? Not long to wait now… "Oh, look at you! Five years later and you haven't changed a bit, apart from age and… size": Wow. Amy Pond has either aged quite a bit or had an allergic reaction. Either way, that's one odd-looking costume. This shot could be from episode ten, Tom MacRae's The Girl Who Waited. "Thank you. | Posted: 28 Jul 2011 06:52 AM PDT This week sees a charity auction of Doctor Who goodies in order to raise money for various charities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital, Children with Cancer UK & Maggie's Centres for Cancer Care. Fundraiser Twelveby12 has organised the event, they have already raised a staggering £20000 since 2006 but that is only just the beginning! The Ultimate Doctor Who auction, as it's being called, has a myriad of artworks (one hundred and ten, count 'em!) as well as some signed items that you can get your hands on. All these pieces are created by "Doctor Who cast, creatives and other celebrities" so you know that you are getting your hands on a rare piece of work. This is all in aid of some of the best possible causes so it's time to dig deep into your pockets and buy a little "exclusive" merchandise that you can't get anywhere else. Remember, this auction is taking place this week and this week only so you don't have much time left. Rather than just putting some money into a jar, visit the auction website and do something a little fun and a little different to help out! | Karen and Matt Tease with Hints Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:45 AM PDT Fresh from this year's ComicCon are a lovely batch of reveals and possible spoilers. For those of you that want to find out more, keep on reading. For those of you who want to find out as little as possible and do not in any way want to know anything about the future episodes of Doctor Who, then you might want to go to a different page on Kasterborous… First up is Matt Smith's desire to see a darker side to the Doctor. After nine hundred or so years of flying around the universe righting wrongs the Doctor obviously carries some emotional baggage with him, feelings of guilt that we've seen actualised before in the forms of the Valeyard and the Dream Lord. But how far can the Doctor take things before we see his less favourable side? And what would really tip him over the edge? Karen Gillan certainly knows what we're going to see on our screens very soon as she subtly yet slyly commented:
What on earth could the good Doctor have been lying about? Matt also revealed that he hopes the Dream Lord will make a return to the show. Not just because of the brilliant character that was bought into being by Simon Nye but also because of the actor who played him, Toby Jones:
An army of Dream Lords all bending reality around the Doctor? There's a way that we could see some past Doctors for the show's fiftieth anniversary! And maybe, just maybe, we'll see a return of the Daleks in season "6b". Piers Wenger hinted that they may come back this year by candidly answering the question of their return with the reply "spoilers". As we've already seen from the trailer, we've already got Cybermen, Weeping Angels and Silents. Daleks may just mean an even more explosive finish for an explosive years worth of Doctor Who! | ||

| Robots, River and the Doctor’s Death Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:52 AM PDT Newsarama has a great interview with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. They talk about a whole bunch of Doctor Who topics and give more hints on what's coming up in the remainder of Series 6. Here are some highlights: | ||
| Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:30 AM PDT DWM asked John Barrowman, could Jack ever return to Doctor Who? Yes, I want to come back! The beautiful thing about Doctor Who is, it's time travel. Matt's Doctor could go back before Jack met his Doctor. Or Matt's Doctor could meet a darker Jack...? That's fine too. There are ways to do it. When he's in Doctor Who, Jack is very different to the Jack that's in Torchwood. Everybody knows my love of Doctor Who, and I would do it at the drop of a hat. Also in this issue:

| SDCC, Squee, the Horsewoman and the Vatican Observatory, Whee! Posted: 28 Jul 2011 01:48 AM PDT Hello. Yes. Finally back at my desk, tired but happy, after the joyous alternate existence that is San Diego Comic Con. I felt very much at home this year, in tune with this board game version of my work life that stretches from the Hilton to the Hyatt to the CBR Yacht to the parties in the Gaslamp District. (Heavy carpet in the hall, miss a turn.) It was great to hang out with three of the gangs I'm part of: Lou Anders' SF mob; my fellow creators of DC Comics' 'New 52' and the Wild Cards gang led by George R.R. Martin. It was great to run into and randomly drink with the Oni Press guys, Dave Gibbons, Javier Grillo-Marxuach (who showed me his Anthony Ainley cosplay photos), Jonathan Hickman, Bill Willingham and many others. In terms of panels, I was proud to be part of the 24th annual Gays in Comics Panel, chiefly talking about Apollo and the Midnighter in Stormwatch (I ought to get a t-shirt saying 'yes, they're still gay'). That was an entertaining time mainly thanks to the witty Chip Kidd (no, you can't date Faceoff from Knight and Squire, he's fictional) and the affable Robert Kirkman. The Wild Cards team took the stage in an enormous hall where most people were waiting for the Castle panel, but this being George Martin, and our current book being a police procedural, he proceeded to sell it to loads of them. I've seen the two DC panels I was on described online as being 'tense stand offs', but that wasn't the feeling in the room at all: we writers of the September relaunch felt we got an initially sceptical crowd hugely onside. There aren't, after all, many 'tense stand offs' in which people get up to offer the other side little gifts. I came away from the weekend feeling much closer to my comrades on the line, talented people like Scott Snyder, Josh Fialkov and Eric Wallace. The chance, on the Edge/Dark Panel for us all to pitch our titles to the audience made us all feel very passionate about September, I think. You can hear both my panels as podcasts: The New 52 and The Dark and the Edge, and there's a list of all the DC/SDCC podcast and picture goodness here. (The audience is picked up on audio a lot less than the panel, so please, let me assure you, there was loads of applause, really!) I missed everyone famous at the Time Warner party, in order to go out on the town with my editors, and I feel I got the best end of that deal. I went to a publishing party where there was a mechanical bull. There were actual ticket touts on the street corners, pedicabs with Game of Thrones seats, posters that took up whole skyscrapers. I had a huge and wonderful time. Every geek should go at least once and see how much we've won, and how much the world changes when there are thousands of us in a town. And, to put the cherry on the cake, when Karen Gillan, on the Doctor Who panel, was asked what writer she'd like to see on the show, well, modesty doesn't quite forbid. A character who's appearing in Demon Knights who I'm particularly proud of is The Horsewoman. She can ride, but she can't walk, she communes with horses, and she's the greatest archer of all time. You can see some character designs, read my write up, and get a taste of her in action here. Now I'm back, there are loads of announcements to make. Action Comics #903, the penultimate issue of my run, is out now, and you can see a three page preview and the alternate cover here. The SF Squeecast (me, Seanan McQuire, Kat Valente, Liz Bear and Lynn Thomas) has released its second episode, where we squee about John Wyndham, Phineas and Ferb and David Bowie, amongst others. Or you can find us on iTunes. Please leave a comment at the site, we welcome your replies. We have some very special guests coming up in future episodes. And if you're on Facebook, we have a fan page. On November 23rd (a meaningful date) I'll be interviewing Stephen Baxter at the BSFA Open Night in London. Entry free, you can just show up for a pint and an evening of SF chat. On September 30th I'll be talking at Bad Writing ('you were the first person we asked!' they said), an academic symposium at King's College, London, about the value of genre fiction. That 'bad' is very much in inverted commas. And finally, my schedule for Renovation, this year's Worldcon in Reno, has been settled on, and it's a great one. Here it is in full, with my excited comments: Wed 13:00 - 14:00, Tourists: Creating Characters and Stories in an Existing World (Panel), A01+6 (RSCC) 'Writers discuss working within the confines of an already existing world. They'll discuss how they create something unique and original within the space of something already established and loved.' Paul Cornell (M), Melinda M. Snodgrass, Brandon Sanderson, A. C. Crispin, Dean Wesley Smith (Hmm, I'm moderating that. But something I'm very interested in.) Wed 17:00 - 18:00, Ask Doctor Genius (Game Show), A03 (RSCC)'The panelists provide authoritative answers to audience questions.' David D. Levine (M), Paul Cornell , Sam Scheiner. (No idea what the game is, but always glad to play one.) Thu 12:00 - 13:00, Autographs: Hall 2 Thu 14:00 - 15:00, Reading: Paul Cornell (I might read some of the new novel, and some Hamilton. I've got a fifty minute slot to fill!) Thu 17:00 - 18:00, Literary Beer: Thu 17:00 (Literary Beer), Hall 2 Bar (RSCC)Paul Cornell, Seanan McGuire (my idea of a good time. At 5pm!) Thu 19:00 - 20:00, Many Ways to Tell a Story: Narrative and the Visual Arts (Panel), C4(RSCC). 'There are many ways to tell a story: books, comics, TV, movies, and more. How are books different from graphic novels and movies? What makes a good graphic story? How is the storytelling the same among the different media? Paul Cornell (M), Bill Willingham, George R.R.Martin (Bloody hell, me, Bill and George? I'll just ask the questions and try not to hyperventilate.) Fri 12:00 - 13:00, Life, the Universe and Everything: A Dialog about Science, Science Fiction, and Religion (Dialog), A01+6 (RSCC) 'A dialog about everything, and we do mean everything!' Paul Cornell , Guy Consolmagno. (This is me interviewing the planetary scientist from the Vatican Observatory who's popularly known as the 'Vatican Astronomer'. I will have to do my homework, and I can't wait.) Fri 13:00 - 14:00, Cradle to Grave: The Art of Creating a Comic(Panel), A01+6 (RSCC). 'Graphic stories are often collaborative in nature, requiring an intense collaboration between writers and artists. The panel looks at the life cycle of a comic from idea through publication.' Bill Willingham, Paul Cornell, Winona Nelson. (An excellent idea for a comics panel.) Fri 20:00 - 00:00, Masquerade (Event), Tuscany Ballroom (Peppermill)(I'll be running Just A Minute with our usual celebrity contestants as the half time entertainment. Will John Scalzi retain his Worldcon title?) Sat 09:00 - 10:00, Stroll with the Stars - Saturday (Activity), Stroll Meeting Spot (OFFSITE). 'A gentle, friendly 1 mile stroll with some of your favorite authors, artists and editors.' Stu Segal (M), James Patrick Kelly, Bill Willingham,Lou Anders,Paul Cornell, Lev Grossman,Farah Mendlesohn, John Picacio. (What good company. As always, I'll try and say hello to everyone.) Sat 11:00 - 12:00, Generation Gap? Is the Conversation in Written SF Fractured by Cohort? (Panel), A09 (RSCC) 'Elizabeth Bear noted there are different conversations amonst the Greatest Generation, the Baby Boomers, and Generation X. How differentiated (or segregated) are the different generations editors and writers conversations? Is the on-going conversation between SF writers, the playing with each other's ideas restricted to writers of a roughly similar age?' Liz Gorinsky (M), Robert Silverberg, Alvaro Zinos-Amaro, Paul Cornell , Ginjer Buchanan (I'm on a panel with Robert Silverberg! I hope I'm not 'the young guy', I really do.) Sun 10:00 - 11:00, The Superior Form: How Short Fiction Remains the Cutting Edge (Panel), A05 (RSCC). 'Novels may get more attention, but short fiction has many advantages, and much of the best fiction, both inside and outside of the genre has been short. The panel looks at some of the best short fiction of recent years.' David G. Hartwell (M), James Patrick Kelly, Paul Cornell,Jack Skillingstead. (I think I'll be just about able to keep up and make some recommendations.) Sun 12:00 - 13:00, Wild Cards (Panel), A01+6 (RSCC)George R.R. Martin (M),Carrie Vaughn, Melinda M.Snodgrass, Ian Tregillis, Paul Cornell, Kevin A. Murphy, Daniel Abraham, David D. Levine, Walter Jon Williams, Ty Franck. (It's us again!)
