| Torchwood: Escape to L.A. Preview Posted: 03 Aug 2011 07:10 AM PDT Torchwood: Miracle Day continues this week on BBC One with episode 4, Escape to L.A. (really!) in which our heroes attempt to infiltrate PhiCorp… Let's face it, Jack and co have been outwitted at every turn so far, so it should come as no surprise to learn that…
Hmm. Doesn't sound good. But at least the scenery is impressive! We've also got a modest gallery for you! Staring John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman and Alexa Havins with Arlene Tur and Lauren Ambrose, this week's episode features appearances from C Thomas Howell (The Outsiders) and Mare Winningham (Brothers, Grey's Anatomy) and airs at 9pm on Thursday, August 4th on BBC One.
| Posted: 03 Aug 2011 06:56 AM PDT It doesn't matter that you only got into Doctor Who because your dad used to watch it in the seventies, you fancy Karen Gillan or you liked Russell T. Davies' writing in the past. There's no excuse not to indulge in Classic Who. Classic DVDs burst onto shelves every month, but money is tight. There's a recession going on, you know. With an RRP hovering around £20, you might not want to cash out on the likes of The Twin Dilemma and Time and the Rani straight away. But wouldn't it be great to have a complete collection? Well, you might want to send a 'thank you' card to Amazon.* Forget £20; you can get The Twin Dilemma for £5.49. Time and the Rani? £5.75. Okay, well, maybe they're going cheap because, let's face it, they're no Inferno. Actually, in terms of price… they are. Inferno's £5.49. (Incidentally, on a parallel Earth, Primords are a joke, compared to the terror of the Tetraps.)
That's all well and good, but there's no way the boxsets are really cheap too. Well, you'd be wrong. This is your lucky day! You can get The Space Museum and The Chase for £10.99; The Time Monster, Underworld and The Horns Of Nimon for £21.97; and The King's Demons and Planet of Fire for £10.99 too! Yep; lucky, lucky you. ** You can even pick up The Key To Time for £22.99; the Doctor would've saved a lot of time by knowing that. Elsewhere in the Whoniverse, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' excellent Sherlock is the number one bestseller on Amazon's BBC store. The first series also includes an episode written by The Curse Of The Black Spot scribe, Steve Thompson, while the third and final mystery –written by Gatiss – is repeated tonight on BBCOne. And at number nine is this month's Who release, The Sun Makers, which also resides at number one in their Doctor Who store, closely followed by the complete series five boxset, The Torchwood Collection and Torchwood: Children of Earth. What are you waiting for? Don't just take my word for it! *** Indulge in the Classics. You might even discover that The Twin Dilemma and Time and the Rani aren't really that bad. I did. *Best not. It's a bit wierd. **You may mock, but did you know that 11% of reviewers of the Kamelion Tales boxset on Amazon have given it five stars? That's a whole three people! ***All prices are correct at the time this article was written. Don't complain if you read this in 2012 and Inferno's now skyrocketed three pence, while The Twin Dilemma is now just £84.93. Thanks.

| Moffat ‘Appalled' at No Gay Characters Posted: 03 Aug 2011 06:14 AM PDT Everett Canton Delware III (Mark Sheppard) wasn't just an amazing supporting character in this years opener The Impossible Astronaut – his inception allowed Steven Moffat to address the one criticism that he ever took to heart. In an interview with AfterElton Moffat said he was 'appalled' at the lack of gay or bisexual characters in his first season in charge because it didn't feel like Doctor Who:
Bringing that sense of fun back Canton's sexuality was devised as a way to make 'a whole other life unfold in your head' and also as a way to set the character apart from being just another agent to an agent more likely to side with the Doctor over the fiercely conservative Richard Nixon. Speaking also of cheeky and fun Moffat spoke again of the possible return of Captain Jack Harkness to the Whoniverse:
More unlikely – but by no means less desired – was AfterElton's suggestion of a return of Midshipman Frame (Russell Tovey – the man once tipped by Russell T. Davies as a potential Doctor) who was last seen indulging in a bit of the Captain at The End of Time:

| Podcast - Cuddlesome - 03 August 2011 Posted: 03 Aug 2011 04:02 AM PDT It's time for the latest story podcast, and this week it's Cuddlesome! Formerly to be found snuggled up with Doctor Who Magazine issue 393, this full-cast Peter Davison story is written by Nigel Fairs and directed by Barnaby Edwards. Do you remember the eighties? The Rubik's cube... Duran Duran... deelyboppers... and the Cuddlesomes - pink vampire hamsters, the must-have toy of twenty-six Christmases ago. For so long now, the Cuddlesomes have been forgotten, lying in attics and junk shops. But now they're waking up. And they want to give us all a cuddle. A long, slow, deadly cuddle... Landing in an England gripped by a strange new plague, the Doctor is soon on the Cuddlesomes' trail. But the toys are just part of a twisted plan to wipe out a whole generation... Cuddlesome stars Peter Davison (The Doctor), Roberta Taylor (Angela Wisher), Timothy West (Ronald Turvey), David Troughton (The Tinghus), Matthew Noble (John Dixon/New Cuddlesomes), Kate Brown (Miranda Evenden/Cuddlesomes/Dr Cooper/Vehicle) and Nicholas Briggs (Newsreader). Sound design and music was by Nigel Fairs, it was produced by David Richardson, and the executive producers were Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs. Next week we'll be taking a short break from the story podcasts to provide a brand new Robcast! That's right, we recorded Rob Shearman at the recent launch of his book, Everyone's Just So So Special, and now you too will be able to hear him in conversation with Matthew Sweet and some of the guests. Come back next week for that, but in the meantime why not do some research by buying a copy of Rob's book? Just click here. Now, while you're waiting on delivery of that, enjoy Cuddlesome! | Posted: 02 Aug 2011 10:58 PM PDT Karen Gillan is set to star in her very own film, a comedy about a writer with writer's block bought on by happiness and success. Not Another Happy Ending, directed by John McKay (Crush), will see Gillan's character go through turmoil as she suffers the block until her publisher decides to help her out and get her writing again only to discover that (shock, horror) he's in love with her. The film will also star Emun Elliot (Game of Thrones) opposite Gillan, McKay remarked:
And indeed that is something to be excited about. What does create an ominous feeling however is that filming is due to start at the end of 2011 or possibly early 2012. Isn't this when Karen should be filming more Doctor Who? Recently, the BBC announced that the next batch of episodes of Doctor Who that they ordered would be shown partly in 2012 and partly in 2013. Could part of the reason for this be so that the stars of the show can pursue other roles whilst remaining in Doctor Who? Or could it just be that it's time for Amy and Rory to move on from their life in the TARDIS and finally settle down in upper Leadworth? Guess we'll find out soon…

| Posted: 02 Aug 2011 07:45 PM PDT A church in Cardiff has come up against a few complaints after it used Doctor Who related pictures to raise the profile of its religious summer club that is due to take place. Using images of the TARDIS, the adverts invited children to come and meet "the ultimate Time Lord". BBC Wales has already gone on record to state that the event is far from official and is nothing to do with the corporation; they did wish the event the best of luck however. Lorraine Barrett, a Humanist, was less than impressed the use of Doctor Who alongside religion, stating:
The fairly obvious answer would be that it's very difficult to get children interested in religion these days and a bit of prompting with Doctor Who is bound to do the trick for them. Not everyone follows the same religion or even any religion at all but surely a child should be allowed to make that choice for themselves? If the church is trying to make the summer event a little bit more inviting with the use of some Doctor Who related activities then so be it. The event starts at the end of August.
