Nick Briggs in The Pit and the Pendulum!

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

We've just heard that voice of the Daleks (and any other Doctor Who monster you care to name) Nicholas Briggs is treading the boards later this year in a touring production of Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum!

A chilling theatrical experience with a mystery twist in the tale, The Pit and the Pendulum tells of William Trevelyan's mission to rescue his young wife from the clutches of a wicked and lascivious Hellfire Club, where he little expects to find himself their captive, tortured by the nightmare of a living grave, the nameless dread of a fathomless pit… and the inevitability of the swinging pendulum with its razor-sharp blade!

Nick – who has of course also appeared on TV in person in Torchwood: Children of Earth – appears alongside Mark Homer (Tony Hills in EastEnders) in a production that has received some great reviews to date:

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM: "utterly convincing … the larger than usual first night audience balanced precariously on the edge of their seats with rapt attention … hours later the adrenalin was still racing" (Derbyshire Times); "adapted and directed with nothing less than genius" (Wimbledon News).

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM …

… a feast of delicious Gothic horror

"so good, it's scary" (Times)

The world's most terrifying tale from the horror story to end all horror stories is touring theatres nationwide in Autumn 2011 – find out more at www.rumpustheatrecompany.co.uk/future.htm

Also a Daak comic strip, written for DWM by Steve Moore in 1980 but withdrawn after a disagreement with the editor, now finally brought to the page by DWM artists Martin Geraghty, Adrian Salmon and Roger Langridge.
  • The first in the series of DWM editor interviews with a fascinating chat between Dez Skinn and Tom Spilsbury. We also chat to Paul Neary, Alan McKenzie, Cefn Ridout and the elusive Sheila Cranna.

Matt Smith on The Late, Late Show

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 10:48 PM PDT

Did you see Matt Smith being all modern and youthful on his return to The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson? No…?

Following on from Karen Gillan's appearance – which actually aired first resulting in some Timey Wimey-ness outside of its usual Tardis based setting – the Eleventh Doctor took time out to reflect on his time baiting American geeks at San Diego Comic Con, his love of Hip Hop (East Side baby!) and the prospect of a Doctor Who film.

In between all that there also a rap featuring Matt beat boxing (yet another string in his bow after this musical performance) and lots of that American chat show thing where the host talks about social occasions shared with the guest and then pretend its not just a mundane thing but a mundane thing WITH A CELEBRITY! And therefore must be funny.

But the rest is good – see for yourself.

New Benny Books

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 10:20 PM PDT

Big Finish Productions is pleased to announce that brand new Bernice Summerfield hardback novels will be published to accompany the audio series, commencing with the February 2012 box set, Road Trip.

'Benny's life in prose has always been an essential ingredient in the success of the character,' says producer Gary Russell. 'She started life in print and it has always been a pleasure to ensure that she carries on in books as well as audio and animation. When Scott and I first took on the mantle of overseeing Benny's life and adventures, I wanted to get back into the full-length novels rather than short-story collections or anthologies, and at the same time make them feel part of the ongoing story - by tying them into the themes of the CD box sets without making them impenetrable if you haven't heard the concurrent audios. Similarly, they are a bonus to the audios; you don't need to read the books to enjoy the CDs. Best of both worlds really!'

'Our first audio box set, Epoch, due for release in September 2011, is effectively a single serial comprising four linked stories,' explains assistant producer Scott Handcock, 'which meant that, from a practical point of view, fitting a novel into that overall storyline would have been difficult. Plus, we have four CD adventures in Epoch - and the Dead and Buried bonus DVD - so it's a packed opening instalment!'

'From Road Trip onwards, however, the audio adventures revert to a series of standalone stories across three CDs, making it a perfect opportunity to reinstate the novels into the range and expand upon Benny's exploits, releasing a brand new adventure alongside every box set. Titles are still to be confirmed, but Benny's first two novels are being tackled by Matthew Griffiths and Xanna Eve Chown, neither of whom are strangers to the world of Bernice Summerfield prose - so she's in safe hands!'

The CD box sets and novels are available to pre-order separately, or can be purchased together as a bundle at a discounted rate. The first box set, Epoch, will be launched at the Regenerations convention in Swansea this September, with the Road Trip CDs and hardback due for release in February 2012.

For those who've already pre-ordered Road Trip and/or Legion, you can upgrade your subscription so it includes the book as well. Simply click on the 'box set + book' subscription and the price will be adjusted automatically on checkout.

Pre-Order Vworp 2!

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 09:32 PM PDT

Fans of the rich history of Doctor Who Magazine and their long running comic strip will probably be aware of the legend that is Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer, and he takes centre-stage in the new edition of Vworp Vworp! magazine – pre-orders for which are now being taken!

If the prospect of a new Doctor Who fanzine release isn't enough to get your juices flowing, perhaps the Weetabix-inspired free gift, pictured above, is?

So what else is in it? I'll let editors Gareth Kavanagh and Colin Brockhurst explain:

  • The first half of our exhaustive Abslom Daak tribute, including interviews with writer Steve Moore, and artists Steve Dillon and David Lloyd. Also a Daak comic strip, written for DWM by Steve Moore in 1980 but withdrawn after a disagreement with the editor, now finally brought to the page by DWM artists Martin Geraghty, Adrian Salmon and Roger Langridge.
  • We're kicking off our series of DWM editor interviews with a fascinating chat between Dez Skinn and Tom Spilsbury. We also chat to Paul Neary, Alan McKenzie, Cefn Ridout and the elusive Sheila Cranna.
  • Ex-Doctors Tom Baker and Colin Baker talk about their comic strip selves.
  • Dave Gibbons, Steve Parkhouse and Mick McMahon discuss The Tides of Time and Junkyard Demon, and we take in The Lodger with Gareth Roberts and Mike Collins.
  • We've got, The Housekeeper, a comic strip written by Paul Magrs and drawn by Bret M Herholz starring Mrs Wibbesey and the Fourth Doctor.
  • And we've got an fantastic free gift in the form of a 'Vworpabix' board game. Based on the 1970s Weetabix game, ours has 16 character cards by Adrian Salmon and boards by Paul Grist, Jon Pinto, Leighton Noyes and Graeme Neil Reid.
  • Two covers: a wraparound Abslom Daak cover by Mike Collins, and an early Doctor Who Monthly pastiche featuring Junkyard Demon (with Jason Fletcher and Ben Willsher's take on Daak on the back cover).
  • … and much more!

So, featuring interviews with Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Dave Gibbons, Paul Cornell, Paul Neary, Dez Skinn, Lee Sullivan and many others, the most professional and polished fanzine you will ever see outside of Panini Towers focuses on various elements of Doctor Who Magazine and its legendary strips – what's not to love?

We've got a hot preview of the magazine coming soon, but in the meantime feast your eyes on the accompanying images and head on over to www.vworpvworp.co.uk, click on Order Vworp Vworp! You can pick up Vworp Vworp! #2 in either of two covers, both £5.99 plus postage.

As for the stunning cover…
