This Week in Doctor Who

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:09 AM PDT

Since 1998, This Week in Doctor Who has provided a valuable record of Doctor Who transmissions from around world.

Creator and maintainer Benjamin F. Elliott stepped down from compiling the list earlier this year, and Doctor Who News would like to keep his work going by providing a detailed list of where and when you can watch Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

To do so we need the help of contributors who would be willing to update our database on a regular basis. We are looking for people who would be willing to take on responsibility for updating a particular channel, especially in countries where we are not represented at present. In return you will get a name credit on the TWIDW page.

If you would like to help please end us an email to twidw@doctorwhonews.net stating which channel you would be able to update and in which country you live.

Torchwood: The Categories of Life

Torchwood: Miracle Day episode 5 has the intriguing title of The Categories of Life – but unfortunately someone's let Gwen get hold of that flipping video camera again.

Obviously, this means it's time for more video diaries while the world goes to hell on a handcart.

Here's the programme copy:

Torchwood goes undercover and discovers the terrible truth behind the "miracle"; but the enemy is closing in, and death is about to make a shocking return, as the new series, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles, continues.

The cast also features Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman and Alexa Havins, plus recurring guest stars Arlene Tur and Lauren Ambrose. Episode fives also welcomes William Thomas (Doctor Who), Sharon Morgan (Mine All Mine), Fred Koehler (Lost), Teddy Sears (The Defenders) and Marc Vann (CSI).

The Reign of Terror to Reign Again

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 07:55 AM PDT

The Doctor might point and laugh at archaeologists as they scamper about in the dirt, picking over the remains of some lost civilisations chamber pot but there are certain periods of time that not even he can ever appear in again.

There's no doubting the incredibly myopic decision to delete archived episodes of Doctor Who during the 70's but now thanks to the archaeological work of animators in Avoca on the Central Coast of Australia fans will be able to once again see a time period once thought lost.

Theta-Sigma (the nickname used by the Doctor during his time at the Time Lord Academy) and their director of Production Austen Atkinson are working in conjunction with the BBC and Big Finish Productions to bring the missing two episodes of The Reign of Terror – the 1964 serial starring William Hartnell and set in the French Revolution – back to life.

Atkinson – who grew up watching Doctor Who – has promised that the company's hand drawn likenesses (rather than computer generated images) will be something to behold:

"This will be a wonderful piece of history restored for Europe and Australia to see."

Using original sound recordings, photos, and scripts Atkinson and his team are restoring parts 4 and five of the incomplete serial.

The entire six parts of the serial will be re-released on DVD and are expected to be screened on television in the near future.

Just Like Robin Hood

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 11:16 PM PDT

In tandem with the return of Doctor Who to BBC One at the end of this month, Matt Smith has been talking a fair bit about life as the Doctor and his thoughts and feelings on the show. And what an inspired fella he is too, coming out with some very astute arguments in terms of Doctor Who. To give you an idea of how on the ball he is with certain issues, here are a few choice quotes from some questions that have been thrown at him.

Matt was speaking to the Daily Mail, which we wouldn't usually mention but the interview is accompanied by some smashing images.

On the character of the Doctor:

'He's like Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes, an enduring character in a fairy tale you can just keep reinventing,'

(Interesting that these are two characters that the BBC has revived in the past few years.)

On the subject of Doctor Who receiving some complaints as viewers felt it was getting "too dark" and "too grown up for children":

"I think it's clever, too. Have you ever watched The Simpsons with your son and laughed at different things? Isn't that one of the virtues of a show like this, when you can see something and look over and go, "Know what? In a few years, you'll get that one."

On building his incarnation of the Doctor's unique persona:

I learned a lot about him from watching children, the way they question the things that are put in front of them, like sniffing a cup of tea. I also watched older people, because although he has lived for more than 900 years, he's always open to new things.

And on his future in the role of the Eleventh Doctor:

"I've got a lot of work ahead of me with Doctor Who before I can even really contemplate what comes next."

So, some choice words from Mr Smith there and some very interesting thoughts as well. It seems that Matt has put in a lot of effort into Doctor Who which means that we've hopefully got a lot more to come from Doctor number eleven yet!

Lady McGillan?

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 10:03 PM PDT

Fair Scottish Maiden Karen Gillan has called upon the spirits to fill her top-full of direst cruelty in order to fulfil a life time ambition of playing Lady Macbeth in 'The Scottish Play'.

Speaking to the Daily Record Gillan revelled her desire to take to the stage as the manipulating partner of her desirous husband Macbeth- who in a Shakespeare 2 for 1 Matt Smith has offered to play alongside her.

"I want to be Lady Macbeth, it's a role I have always wanted to play.

Matt, 28, added: "And I want to be Macbeth, so let's do that. I'd quite like to do a play."

There you go- not content with putting children through the wringer every Saturday night they now want to punish them further and make them sit through Macbeth like it's a wet Wednesday afternoon in classroom 2E all over again.

It might be a small step on the way to regicide but Gillan also revelled she's been practicing a little voodoo in her new flat:

"I have just moved into a new flat and have nothing to decorate it with other than a lot of Doctor Who merchandise. It's really sad. I even have a knitted doll of Matt. Not in my bed. I don't cuddle it to sleep. It's in a box in a spare room and is not coming out. I stick pins in it."

Precedent has been set for Who actors waxing their iambic pentameter- David Tennant and Catherine Tate can currently be seen in Josie Rourke's production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

So lets hope she can dispatch the milk of human kindness and get Matt Smith to screw his courage to the sticking place and make a truly memorable Mr and Mrs Macbeth.

Terry Nation Would Had Been 81 Today (Yesterday)

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 06:48 PM PDT

Terry Nation, the creator of the Daleks (with nods to Raymond Cusick who designed them and of course Davros himself) for Doctor Who as well as the creator of the popular British sci-fi series, Blake's 7 would had been 81 years old today (well, now yesterday (8th of August) by the time you are reading this unless you are in Hawaii for the next hour or two). Of course his credits extend further than Doctor Who and Blake's 7. There was The Survivors, and episodes of various televsion series he contributed to both in the UK and US during the course of his career.

Terry NationWe lost him all too soon at the age of 66 in 1997. It was about ten years (give or take) before then when I had an opportunity to sit down with him and interview him. Unfortunately, the audio of that interview has slipped through a time vortex or a crack in space. Hopefully it is re-materialize at some point. I don't even have any photographs to share from that time. Perhaps like so many other cast and crew that I was meeting at that time I assumed there will always be the next time if I didn't get a photo that time. Sadly, there was no next time in my case with Terry Nation.

My memories of Terry Nation is that he was very open about his work. You could tell he enjoyed having the opportunity to speak about it. There was certain intensity about him. He would be quick to correct you if presented with information that didn't jive with what he knew to be the case. Not in a rude a way, by any means.
