Ian McNeice Joins Tom Baker

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 05:02 AM PDT

There's only a few months left of 2011 which means that we're getting even closer to the start of a new era at Big Finish, as the company prepares to release its exclusive Fourth Doctor range starring Tom Baker.

Such a momentous occasion requires a momentous cast which already contains Louise Jameson reprising her role as Leela and Mary Tamm reprising her role as Romana.

And now we have the wonderful Ian McNeice to face off against Tom as well!

McNeice is best known in the Doctor Who world as Winston Churchill in 2010's Victory of the Daleks and The Pandorica Opens. However, the actor is no stranger to Big Finish, having previously appeared alongside Paul McGann in 2007's Immortal Beloved.

The Fourth Doctor adventure that he's just recorded sees him playing the mysterious Harcourt, whom the Doctor and Leela encounter when they land in a sleepy English village…

If you haven't got a Big Finish subscription or have become estranged from the range, this is the ideal stepping on point for you.

Find out more about the Fourth Doctor's new adventures at www.bigfinish.com

The Mazes Of Time – Android Review

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 01:17 AM PDT

I was delighted to read on this very site that BBC Worldwide have released The Mazes Of Time game as an mobile app on the Android Market, so naturally I rushed to the online shop and downloaded it. However, to say it's a full release is about half-right. For the price of sweet F-A, you get about 4 levels. For the dedicated player, it works out at about 10-15 minutes of gameplay before you have to start forking over the cold hard cash to unlock the rest of the game (something that is beyond my abilities). Also, once you've completed the initial free session, the only way to go back to the later levels is creating a new save file (I named my second file Kasterborous). Not that it makes a blind bit of difference whether you do or not, as you have to go through the tutorials when you reopen a save file anyway.

You play as The Doctor and Amy, trying to navigate your way around levels and occasionally coming across Daleks, Cybermen and Silurians. Each character has an ability that the other does not and has problems that the other hasn't, so you have to make them work together to get through the levels. For example, The Doctor can't walk over certain areas of the floor because he's too fat, but he can clamber over obstacles in his way and push boxes around. Amy, for her part, can crawl through small spaces (her crawl animation is hilarious) and generally serve as an assistant to The Doctor. Bizarrely, both of them regenerate upon dying.

Doctor Who - The Mazes of Time on Android phones

The gameplay itself is rather fiddly, with the on-screen joystick sometimes not working quite as well as you'd like it to. One time, it took me about a minute and a half just to get in the right position to move a box. You also unfortunately cannot run properly, no matter how much you move the joystick. All you can manage is a bit of a light jog. The animation is pretty good and the design is done in the same style as the recent Adventure Games.

One area that works well in the game is the dialogue between The Doctor and Amy. You get the feeling that writer Oli Smith has a handle of the characters and how they talk to each other. This helps to add to the feeling that this is indeed a Doctor Who game, not some cheap knock-off called Doctor What-Where?

Overall, the game's not that great. It has its moments and it's a nice little way to pass the time. I'd recommend trying out the free version and seeing what you think. If your Doctor Who loving children are of an age to possess an Android phone, then they'll probably like this as it's not too difficult and you get to play as The Doctor. If that's not worth doing for free then I don't know what is.

Fright Night is Here!

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 12:04 AM PDT

In a cinema near you soon, David Tennant finally shakes off the shackles of television and starts, hopefully, a Simon Pegg–style rise through the ranks. By this we mean making the successful transition from popular television actor to Hollywood movie star.

David's new film, a remake of the 1980's movie Fright Night, sees him playing the role of Las Vegas magician Peter Vincent, who is enlisted to stop a vicious vampire (Colin Farrell) from destroying a quiet neighbourhood.

Tennant has had plenty of television work since he left Doctor Who but film work has been here and there. However, Fright Night is receiving good reviews and a sequel has already been rumoured with Tennant taking even more of a lead role.

Looking very bad-ass (and a little bit Russell Brand-y as well) the actor has never looked so different then he does now. And in approaching the character and bringing him to life, Tennant also had a different and refreshing approach then he did to playing the Doctor:

David recently spoke about his new role and mentioned returning to Doctor Who in an interview with www.shocktillyoudrop.com.

"There's something very appealing from an acting point of view about a reluctant hero…someone who is struggling to do the right thing, who needs a drink to strap his stake gun on, I think that's a very interesting area…It's also fun to have the freedom to swear as much as he does."

Fright Night opens in cinemas on Friday, September 2nd.

We're particularly excited about this new site, as it gives long-term Kasterborous designer (each version of the site has come from his amazing, creative mind) a new home on the web at long last with a great site that showcases the work that he has done for Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Big Finish, BBC Books, and of course the amazing Doctor Who DVD boxsets for 2|entertain!

The thing that is really great about WhoPixels is the fact that Anthony is also planning to sell prints of his work! We'll let you know when these are available, but in the meantime head over to the site and cast your eye over some of his remarkable work…
