Doctor Who Wins Fifth Hugo

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 11:21 AM PDT

Doctor Who has won a HUGO award for the 2010 series conclusion The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.

Written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes, the story was shown last June when it wrapped up the events of Matt Smith's first series as The Doctor.

The story beat two other Doctor Who stories, A Christmas Carol and Vincent and the Doctor as well as The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and **** Me, Ray Bradbury by Rachel Bloom, to win the award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form).

The award is the fourth for Steven Moffat, having previously won for The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink. Last year the award was won by The Waters of Mars written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford.

The award for Best Related Work was given to Chicks Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the Women Who Love It, edited by Lynne M. Thomas and Tara O'Shea and published by Mad Norwegian.

The book is a series of essays which delve into the extraordinary aspects of being a female "Doctor Who" enthusiast. Essays include Carole Barrowman discussing what it was like to grow up with her brother John, columnist Jackie Jenkins providing a Bridget Jones' Diary-style memoir of working on "Doctor Who Magazine," and novelist Lloyd Rose analyzing Rose's changes between the ninth and tenth Doctors.

The Hugo Awards are given every year for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.

Hugo Awards have been presented every year since 1955. The 2011 winners were announced on Saturday evening, at Renovation, the 69th World Science Fiction convention held in Reno, Nevada.

Doctor Who Flesh Figures

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Series 6 Wave 2 Flesh toys

Remember when toys were really cool? They had fun little accessories that took them beyond just being a figurine. Toys from the film Terminator 2 had a special skin that could come off revealing a robotic exo-skeleton underneath, while the Ghostbusters range had lots of different extras that helped your imagination spin out wild tales.

And as for Transformers…

These days, an action figure release normally encompasses just the figure and not a lot else which is why it's refreshing to see that some items in the Series 6 Wave 2 range of Doctor Who figures will have their own "flesh" and "flesh masks" meaning that kids can finally have some proper Gangers-style fun with their toys rather than just looking at them!

As you can see, Wave 2 will include the Eleventh Doctor and his Ganger (who looks a lot like serial killer Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise), both with flesh masks, River with her own flesh mask (interesting…), The Astronaut (a little girl in a spacesuit), Idris with a collection of cubes and Uncle – also with a flesh mask. Whether any of this means something or Character are getting over-excited by their use of flesh, we're not yet certain.

These figures retail at £9.99, but you can purchase from Forbidden Planet using the links above for just £8.99 per item! You should note, however, that Wave 2 features flesh-less figures, so be careful which items you select.

All Series 6 Wave 2 figures stand at five inches and are fully articulated. If you're a fan of the figure range, these figures are certainly going to be high on your list of "wants"!

2|entertain to YOU-Entertain in October

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 07:45 AM PDT

It's a busy old October for 2|Entertain – not content with providing parents much needed digital media-based sedation for their half-term holidaying off spring and lining the pockets of Ricky Gervais with more The Office-based cash there's also a raft of new Who to expel cash on.

Up first is the release date for Doctor Who Series Six: Part Two which will be hitting shelves on the 10th October and can already be pre-ordered from Amazon for £15.93 (and while we're at it, let's start a campaign to get the non-finalised artwork to be finalised – it's fantastic!).

If you like your Doctor Who a little more Pertwee then on the 3rd October take a trip to the Colony in Space – the Third Doctor classic comes with a raft of special features and is also available to pre-order, for just £14.99.
.

Finally on the 31st October sees the release of the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which included the Doctor, Sarah Jane, Jo Grant summit meeting that was Death of the Doctor.

The special features have yet to be announced but if it doesn't include a tribute to the late, much missed Elisabeth Sladen then we'd be very surprised.

The set is also available to pre-order from Amazon for just £12.99.

Night Terrors are Coming!

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 07:21 AM PDT

The BBC has released details for the ninth episode of Series 6, Night Terrors, written by Mark Gatiss.

"The Doctor receives a distress call from the scariest place in the Universe: a child's bedroom. Every night George lies awake, terrorised by every fear you can possibly imagine – fears that live in his bedroom cupboard. His parents are getting desperate – George needs a doctor. Fortunately for George, his desperate pleas for help break through the barriers of all time and space and the Doctor makes a house call. But allaying his fears won't be easy; because George's monsters are real."

Gatiss has previously written The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern, and last year's Victory of the Daleks, which introduced us to the controversial new paradigm, and appeared as Lazarus in 2007's The Lazarus Experiment.

Night Terrors, which follows the (sort of) half- season premiere, Let's Kill Hitler, is set to broadcast on 3rd September and features Daniel Mays (who you may know as Keats in Ashes to Ashes) and some very creepy dolls!

We'll bring you a full preview of the episode next week, just as soon as we've finished off Hitler…
