| Posted: 23 Aug 2011 01:43 PM PDT Anne Ridler played Gemma Corwyn the second-in-command of Space Station W3 in the 1968 Doctor Who story The Wheel in Space. After appearing in five episodes of the story she sacrificed her life to help the Second Doctor defeat the Cybermen. Anne Ridler had a long and distinguished career first appearing on television in 1955 and going on to work on over 5 movies and 29 TV serials. Her first screen role was on TV with a regular spot alongside Francis Matthews in the Francis Durbridge series My Friend Charles. Her breakthrough came as a regular in Dixon of Dock Green, appearing as WP Sgt. Chris Freeman from 1962 to 1964. She had guest roles in Moonbase 3 in 1973 and The Tomorrow People in 1975 abd in the 1980' s she played voice of Kate Kestrel, Cy-Star and It-Star in Gerry Anderson's puppet-animated Terrahawks series. She had small roles in the Hammer film Camp on Yangtse Incident (1957), the Michael Anderson-directed Blood Island (1958) and 633 Squadron (1963). She played Jacqueline Shaffer in the Big Finish story Master. | ||
| Posted: 23 Aug 2011 01:08 PM PDT Noel Collins appeared in 3 episodes of the 1989 Doctor Who story Battlefield where he played Pat Rowlinson, the landlord of the hotel in which the Seventh Doctor and Ace stayed while investigating an inter-dimensional distress call. Collins was best known for his role in the long running BBC police series Juliet Bravo, where he played Sergeant George Parrish throughout the six year run of the show. He also appeared in Play for Today, When the Boat Comes in and the comedy series Bread. Collins retired at the age of 60 after being diagnosed with lung cancer and undergoing an operation which involved removing a lung. In the 1990's he joined 52 other claimants in a £17million lawsuit against cigarette giants Gallaher and Imperial Tobacco arguing that the companies had been negligent in not reducing the tar content in their cigarettes between 1957 and 1971 once it became obvious that smoking caused lung cancer. Although the case was dropped in March 1999 Collins retained his anti smoking stance until his death. His widow Helen Collins paid tribute to her husband's bravery in the face of his illness. "He was content in his life but also stoic during the bad times. He became very anti-smoking but he lived through his illness as best he could. Even in his last week he was still getting Juliet Bravo fan mail which he found amusing. He loved the theatre and really enjoyed his career, but without being pretentious or boastful." Noel Collins died on 15 August after losing his long battle with cancer. | ||

| Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer: update Posted: 23 Aug 2011 08:28 AM PDT Will Brooks, co-author of the forthcoming Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer, has informed us that the pre-order date for the book has been pushed forward to 10:00pm this coming Friday, 26th August - this is in order to be able to launch the book as scheduled for 10th October. Those who pre-order the book will have their names printed inside the book as a special thanks. For a Doctor that only made one TV appearance, in the 1996 TV Movie, the Eighth Doctor has lead a long and eventful life on audio. Since 2001, Big Finish have produced more than sixty audio plays featuring Paul McGann giving the character a life beyond the small screen. In Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer, two dedicated Doctor Who fans set out to listen to each of these audio plays, one episode a day every day, in an attempt to experience a true 'Eighth Doctor Era'. Along the way they discover the highs and lows of the series, from 2001's Storm Warning through to 2011's To the Death, via a short series of Sixth Doctor plays featuring ongoing companion Charley Pollard. Written by Will Brooks (Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space) and Nick Mellish (Nick's Little Bit of Net), sometimes examining the literary origins of the Eighth Doctor's adventures, sometimes commenting on the strength of a story, and sometimes merely praising (or otherwise) a particular cast member, Memoirs of an Edwardian Adventurer is the definitive account of two fan's experiences of the Eighth Doctor's travels in time and space. | ||

| Posted: 23 Aug 2011 06:54 AM PDT Prepare yourselves, Matt Smith has hinted – that's HINTED – that he has planned his exit from Doctor Who. Speaking to the Radio Times, Smith suggested that he knew what age he would be when he left the show but stopped himself before he revealed said age. This may well be something that he has decided for himself and not something that he has officially put in writing yet but it does look as if he has plans to move on.
Of course, this is no bad thing. Matt is a revelation as the Eleventh Doctor but this era of Doctor Who is at such a fast pace, we're lucky to have an incarnation of any Doctor for more than two years. There may be a lot of speculation that comes from this over the next few months but don't forget that Matt is going to be in the role of the Doctor until at least 2013, so sit back and enjoy the ride rather than worrying about what's coming next! | ||

| Posted: 23 Aug 2011 04:39 AM PDT It's almost time: Doctor Who is back on our screens this Saturday and it looks like we're about to have a load of BIG secrets revealed. We last left the Doctor as he jumped into the TARDIS and hurtled off into time and space to rescue little Melody Pond. Now we're about to find out how that mission went and if things will ever be the same for Amy and Rory. Leading up to Let's Kill Hitler and the other five episodes that remain of Series 6, there's quite a lot of media coverage to keep viewers slobbering until the transmission dates arrive. SFX magazine has an interview with the man himself, Matt Smith, about the remaining episodes and what we can expect. Some choice quotations include his view on Let's Kill Hitler:
Tom McRae's new episode:
And the all important episode thirteen, which may include such words in the title as "wedding", "the", River", "of" and "Song":

| Classic series DVD production update Posted: 22 Aug 2011 11:57 PM PDT Some news on future DVD releases emerged at the Fantom Films conventions held over the weekend: Back in 1964, the story Planet of Giants had originally been filmed as a four-part story, but had the latter two episodes combined into one in order to tighten the plot for a better paced series opener. Though the original recording no longer exists, actress Carole Ann Ford, who played the Doctor's grand-daughter Susan, mentioned at the Dalek Invasion Earth convention that she had recently recorded an audio version of the original script for that fourth episode, The Urge to Live, which she believed is to be for the DVD release of the story. Further 'lost' material also seems likely to see the light of day. Back in 1979 the final story of Season 17, Shada, had to be abandoned due to BBC strikes with only parts of the studio sessions completed; appearing at the Timelord Tales convention, both Victoria Burgoyne (Clare) and Daniel Hill (Chris) reported that they'd been involved in a new audio recording of the script for the unfilmed material, in which other original cast members participated including Lalla Ward (Romana). They also discussed the missing scenes being recreated in animation, and believed this could form part of a DVD release of the story in the future. (Producer Ian Levine has confirmed that the actors were talking about his production, but that the cast hope for an 'official' release.) A recent fire at the Sony warehouse facilities in Enfield led to loss of much of the DVD and CD stock held there, including Doctor Who DVDs due to be distributed by 2|Entertain. However, the company has reported that this will not affect the release of Day of the Daleks, due out on the 12th September (available to pre-order). The Restoration Team have recently revived their website that delves into the technical issues involved in restoring the classic Doctor Who stories for DVD release - the site had been in mothballs since The Space Museum/The Chase back in January 2010. The site is in the process of being brought up to date, and new articles have now been added for the first Revisitations boxed set and for Mannequin Mania. Further snippets for DVD production have been tweeted by the Restoration Team; this includes an appeal by Chris Chapman for anybody who could provide contact details for Peter Walker (the young boy in The Reign of Terror) - if you can help please let him know. 10 Aug ClassicDW: Something on COLONY DVD betrays original release date. | ||
| So the TARDIS is Solar Powered? Posted: 22 Aug 2011 11:33 PM PDT There have been many explanations as to what powers the TARDIS- The Eye of Harmony, the heart of the TARDIS, Mercury, Zeiton 7, Mr. Fusion, Leaded, Unleaded, you name it – only from now on it appears as though it'll be powered by something a little more within our own Solar System. Business Green reports that solar panel suppliers Krannich Solar and installation specialist Ecofirst have announced they have completed the installation of a 50 kw Photovoltaic solar array at the new BBC Wales Studios which is set to become the primary filming location for the series. Commissioned by nPower the project consisted of building 200 SunTech solar panels and three inverters in time for filming to commence next month. Juan Romera-Wade, Chief Executive at Krannich Solar said:
No pun intended. A further boost from the 50 kw capacity of the solar array also means that the BBC avoid cuts to the Feed-in Tariff incentives offered by the Government that came into force from this month on installations with over 50 kw capacity.

| Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:36 PM PDT With less than a month to go until the launch of the new Bernice Summerfield box set Epoch, Big Finish Productions is pleased to unveil Alex Mallinson's impressive redesign and artwork for the forthcoming releases. 'We felt that, with Benny moving into box set territory, it was time for a nice revamp,' explains producer and director Gary Russell. 'Adrian Salmon's beautiful, stunning covers have always been one of the true delights of the old Benny range but as we head into a new decade, it seemed right to move into a more photographic design. And this gave us the chance to finally put Lisa Bowerman on the cover. 'Lisa is so inextricably linked with the character now, it seems almost bizarre that we've never featured her photos before. Alex Mallinson has done a great job in transforming the whole look and feel of Benny. We discussed actual costumed photoshoots - oh yes, no photoshopped costumes here, folks - a stark, slightly Frank Miller's Sin City feel to the whole thing and a colour palette that will gently change across subsequent box sets to reflect their mood and location. And that's what Alex has given us. I'm truly proud of this whole new look and feel to Bernice's adventures - it takes us forward towards a new and exciting future for Benny, particularly with the twentieth anniversary of the character fast approaching!' Epoch will be launched at next month's Regenerations convention in Swansea, and comprises four all-new audio adventures, and an exclusive DVD featuring behind-the-scenes documentaries, together with the recent Dead and Buried animated feature. | ||

| Posted: 22 Aug 2011 08:10 PM PDT Torchwood episode six! This should really be heating up now, right? We're past the half way point… Well they SHOULD be heating up (oh my: "heating up" – that's really wrong considering the subject matter, but hey, what can you do?)… It's getting there. I think. So, the plusses for this weeks Torchwood: it seems likes things are getting a bit more serious for the Torchwood team. One of the new key players has died (I'll spare you who in case you haven't been following totally yet) and what an odd choice too – one of the best characters. We've got the entire team in the thick of it trying to get to the bottom of the mystery of the Miracle and finding out some dark secrets. And there has been no, or little straying from the main story line to satisfy the networks or RTD's need for some "misplaced" sexual content. Yet while these dark secrets that the team are investigating are giving them something to do, they still aren't finding out anything new about the Miracle are they? (That's aside from Jack, but more on him later) Rex and Gwen have found out about the incinerators for the "Category One" humans but where does that get them? These are just the effects of the Miracle not the cause. They are finding out how us humans will deal with such a horrible situation rather than finding out who or what is the cause. While they ultimately get to use this information to expose the full horror of the Miracle, nothing is changing higher up. Now, Jack, he found himself a Phicorp exec (Ghostbusters' Ernie Hudson) who gave him some good information, which means – if you're keeping score – Jack is the only one actually working on the issue at hand. Score one for Batman.. er, Jack! The rest of the Torchwood team is just out trying to expose the mean old government for the way they are treating "the dead" or trying to save family members while at the same time exposing themselves to the very people who they are on the run from. One more sad note for this week story is the lack of Bill Pullman as Oswald Danes (the most engaging of the new characters in this series of Torchwood). Of course he'll be back, I'm sure they are not done with his story, but his presence is sorely missed. I know this review is coming off sour, but believe me it's not because I don't like Torchwood, I am trying very hard to like this series, after all Children of Earth set the standards so high that I was expecting to love this series. But sadly it is falling short for me. That said, there are good moments. Such as Marc Vann as Colin Maloney – the man in charge of the military base housing the top secret incinerators. Colin is a character we've come to expect for a Russell T. Davies drama. He's just as scared as anyone else in the face of this new world and willing to do what it takes to survive. He shows us that murder can still happen in a world where no one can die and he shows us that sometimes people will do things they never would have thought possible in the face of world shattering events. Thankfully this week's episode took a serious tone to the story-telling which really made me feel that this series may finally have found it's footing and could be on the right track for the rest of the series run. If the Torchwood team can get their act together and find out just what caused the Miracle and prove their worth, then Torchwood: Miracle Day just might prove the same to me. | ||
