What's In Store for Amy?

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 03:07 AM PDT

Website i09.com had the good fortune to be able to sit down with the lovely Karen Gillan at the recent San Diego Comic-Con and ask the actress a few questions about Amy Pond's future in Doctor Who.

Pond recently learnt that River Song is actually little Melody Pond from the future but was still left to fret as the baby was kidnapped and taken away through time and space with only the Doctor to track her down.

Having been through so much with the Time Lord from such a young age, is trust something that comes easy to the character of Amy or is it something that's in short supply? Karen remarked:

"Because of what happened to her as a child — that never quite leaves her, I think. So that's really interesting. But we might see that trust begin to grow, and then something's going to happen to that trust in the next part of the series. Something really major."

Very ominous indeed, what cataclysmic event awaits the TARDIS travellers? Certainly there's going to be a lot of unanswered questions that need tending to, there's also the interesting angle of River and Amy and what their relationship will be like now that they both know they're mother and daughter, with Amy possibly being the Doctor's mother-in-law:

"That's a really weird thought and it really disturbs me. [Laughs] It's definitely going to be explored. All of the relationships change in the next half of the series. What's really fun is the relationship between Amy and River. That's really explored."

If you want to read the full interview, note that it also features a little bit from Toby Whithouse on his new episode.

Don't miss Doctor Who on Saturday evening at 7.10pm on BBC One and BBC HD!

“Midnight” Planet Discovered!

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 02:15 AM PDT

About 4000 light-years away (which is in the Milky Way, although still stupidly far away), a planet has been discovered orbiting a Pulsar star. Pulsar stars are dead neutron stars that are, in astronomical terms, peanuts compared to space.

The diameter for the Pulsar star involved here is about 12 miles across. The planet itself is a bit larger than Jupiter and about 20 times denser, so it's mostly solid. What makes it interesting to the layman (and indeed, the Doctor Who fan) is that the carbon base of the planet would be crystallised, which amounts to a planet that is pretty much made of diamond. Rumours of a mimicing monster have yet to be confirmed.

It orbits the dead neutron star in an orbit that would fit inside our own sun, so that a year on that planet (which they should let Russell T. Davies name) equals two hours and ten minutes. More than enough time for a couple episodes of Doctor Who or Torchwood!

According to Ben Stappers (quoted in the article linked to below), the planet won't look quite like the one in Midnight, but you could probably make a fortune from mining it (once the cost of mounting a space mining expedition becomes cost-effective, of course).

It's an interesting discovery, especially for Whovians, and makes one wonder at just what else is out there. If there's any more of these planets going undiscovered, then the skies are truly made of diamonds.

Matt's Fond of Who

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Matt Smith may have a date in mind for when he'll hang up the bow tie and braces but for now he feels 'privilaged' to occupy the role he has become so fond of.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle on the eve of Doctor Who's return to our screens with Let's Kill Hitler this Saturday Smith said he couldn't see a reason to leave the show after signing on for another year:

"Why would I quit? I've got Steven Moffat writing scripts, but not only that, Toby Whithouse (The God Complex) and Richard Curtis (Vincent and the Doctor)…ball these great writers. It's so funny, I read other scripts and I just go, 'Not as good as Doctor Who!"

With Smith signed up he'll be the incumbent Doctor when the show celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Clandestine plans have been drawn but thus far Smith refuses to be drawn on what fans can expect:

"Well, you saw the celebrations for Coronation Street… it was huge wasn't it? And Doctor Who is an institution, so to be part of the celebrations will be a real honour."

While feeling both privelged and honoured to be a part of Who Matt has also leapt to its defence against critics who've called the show far too complicated for children to understand:

"Ah, the critics…My response is it's like The Simpsons, which can be received on many levels. It's only as complicated as you choose to make it. One of the reasons it's doing well in America is there's great detail and many layers, and in a sci-fi culture that's what they want."

Let's Kill Hitler airs this Saturday at 19:10 on BBC One and BBC One HD in the UK and BBC America in the USA.

City of Death: Action Figure Collectors Set

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:13 PM PDT

Doctor Who - City of DeathThere's no doubting the pedigree behind the 1979 serial City of Death – number eight on DWM Mighty 200 – written by Douglas Adams, starring the at-his-peak Tom Baker and international movie villain Julian Glover.

Put simply, any related merchandise would have to have a certain… bouquet.

So behold the new Action Figure Collectors Set: City of Death, featuring the Fourth Doctor (complete with Sonic Screwdriver accessory) and Count Scarleoni, who comes with a pistol, Mona Lisa painting accessory, and interchangeable Scaroth head.

For those not in the know: City of Death saw the Doctor and Romana II (Lalla Ward) investigating a fracture of time in Paris where upon visiting the Louvre, and obtaining an alien bracelet from the Countess Scarleoni (Catherine Schell), the pair become embroiled in a conspiracy by the Count to sell duplicate copies of the Mona Lisa (all original) to fund his diabolical time experiments.

The set is available to pre-order now for £26.99 and are expected to arrive in Forbidden Planet's mysterious Warehouse of Wonder on the 19th October.

(Note: bouquets not included.)
