| Martha Jones arrives on BBC Entertainment Posted: 28 Aug 2010 09:38 AM PDT The BBC's internationally broadcast channel BBC Entertainment (formerly BBC Prime) is to start broadcasting the third series of Doctor Who, starring David Tennant and Freema Agyeman, in the Autumn. The channel is currently available to watch in Europe and the Middle East.Says the press release: Following on from the phenomenal success of the first two series that have taken British television by storm, the third installment of Doctor Who is full of new thrills, new laughs, new heartbreak and some terrifying new monsters. From the moment the Doctor (David Tennant) walks into the life of medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) he changes it forever. Together they find themselves travelling through time and space encountering extraordinary events, amazing worlds and faces both old and new. They come face to face with the ruthless Judoon, a vicious plasmavore and the Doctor's sworn enemies, the Daleks, who have been hiding in 1930s New York with a terrifying plan for humanity. Strangely, BBC Entertainment's home page features David Tennant and Catherine Tate! | ||
| Posted: 28 Aug 2010 09:22 AM PDT The BBC have appointed media accountant Alun Jones as the Programme Director for its new Drama Village being built at the Roath Basin, Cardiff. Mr Jones has worked in the media industry for some seventeen years, including HTV and most recently as integration director for the Capital Radio/GWR merger. He said: The drama centre is a unique project in Wales and I am delighted to be joining the team at this stage of a development which, in addition to allowing BBC Wales to build on the success of its current drama productions, also presents a fantastic opportunity for the wider creative industries in Wales. The Drama Village is expected to be completed during the summer of 2011, with Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures due to start filming there from 2012 - meaning the former's 50th Anniversary series will be produced at a brand new studio! There is an ambitious timetable of work to be completed in the coming year, and I'm confident that it will be achieved through the combination of the outstanding talent within the team and the excellent partnerships that have already been put in place. Previous news items on the Drama Village were reported in January and May. | ||
| Doctor Who & the Licence Fee Posted: 28 Aug 2010 07:30 AM PDT It's all go in Edinburgh this weekend as the International Television Festival pushes on, with big talks by BBC Director General Mark Thompson and an appearance by Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat.
Steven Moffat knows.
Of course, he's generalising here. A cut to the licence fee needn't necessarily affect television. Given the vast outlets for BBC programming both on TV and online, not to mention radio, should a cut be enforced, with the right management any cutbacks would be applied to services that don't have the same profile as the BBC's main channels or programmes. Reducing repeats and channels that are missing a genuine purpose and direction would be a good start. (Did someone say "BBC Three"?) (Via Digital Spy)

At this point the cover is still going through a color finalization stage so the cover below may change in that respect, but the art itself looks fantastic doesn't it? With respect to the original release, this cover drops the cut and paste look and gives us some real artistic design showing us that someone took really good care of this release, which is very much appreciated. While the TV Movie seems to split fans, I think there is no debate over the fact that fans will be relieved to see the TV Movie finally getting the star treatment like so many other Classic Series DVDs. And if the current trend of retrofitting the United Kingdom cover art for the North American market continues, then it seems those of us in America and Canada will be in for an even greater treat than just finally being able to own this film on DVD when it hits our shops. Wow – the Doctor Who TV Movie on DVD in the USA and an exclusive cover art for the Region 2 area? Someone, please pinch me. Special thanks to Dan Hall for giving Kasterborous the honor of debuting the R2 TV Movie cover, and for more updates on this release, follow @classicdw on Twitter!

| The Return of Comic Con Stuff! Posted: 28 Aug 2010 02:07 AM PDT Remember that Comic-Con-exclusive Eleventh Doctor and Dalek Scientist set we told you about back in June? Guess what's just been made available for pre-order online! That's right! Go to Forbidden Planet right now and place your order for the Flesh and Stone Doctor and the orange Moffat Dalek! Those Scientists from Skaro, whose image is debatable at full-size, actually look kinda cute when they're small! Plus, the Doctor comes with a detachable sonic screwdriver! All you have to do is shell out £26.99, and Forbidden Planet will send you a windowed box containing these two figures! Unfortunately, that's about all the information provided by the site at the moment, except for the obvious fact that they're made out of plastic, and the bad news below… Foreigners will start to feel the leftover pangs from the long wait for Doctor Who: The Adventure Games when they learn that these figurines, once only available at a couple of booths in San Diego, are to be shipped to British and Irish consumers, and no one else. The proof is quoted below:
Unfortunately, collectors from elsewhere will have to wait a while (if they're a Mac user, they'll wait forever) or beg a friend from the Isles to mail a set to them. But enough of all the doom and gloom! The end of the world only happens every spring when Doctor Who's on the telly! If you're a Brit or an Irishman, pre-order your DoctorDaleks now, and they'll be shipped to you when the stock arrives at the Forbidden Planet warehouse on 12 September!

Mr Jones has worked in the media industry for some seventeen years, including HTV and most recently as integration director for the Capital Radio/GWR merger.
All focus – thanks to the Murdoch-backed media and a few pointless cases – is on the BBC licence fee, and whether it should be cut. We'll hang fire on that for the time being and ask the more pertinent question – what effect would a cut on the licence fee have on Doctor Who?

With the imminent release of Project: Infinity, a Seventh Doctor adventure that reintroduces The Forge, you can now get the Doctor's earlier encounters with the shady organisation in Project: Twilight and Project: Lazarus for five pounds each. Both are excellent plays that really push the standard of what Colin Baker can achieve as the Sixth Doctor and Lazarus is worth picking up just to hear the Sixth Doctor's impression of the Seventh! Infinity is long awaited conclusion to this trilogy so if you want to find out what happened before, now's the time.
Pranksters at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have materialised a TARDIS on the roof of a building in Kendal Square.
