Having arrived home from Bath at 10pm on Christmas Eve before wrapping my presents I just wanted to say a very Happy Christmas to anyone who is mad enough to want to log on to my blog over the Christmas period! When I say "mad" - it is a flattering 'madness' that you should even think about me at Christmas! I have been panto driven for the last two weeks having gone straight from Noises Off, via Chicago, into rehearsals for Jack and the Beanstalk - but I wanted to be sure to thank you all for your support and interest over the last few years and a special thank you to the wonderful, uncomplaining and diligent Rob Cope for keeping this website so informative and interesting even though I am not always that good at keeping him informed. To Rob and to all of you - thanks and have a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Come and see me in Bath until the 25th January if you have the chance - it is a fun panto and everyone in it is both good and lovely!

More after Christmas - I promise!!!

The Automatic Man

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 07:00 AM PDT

What do you get when you combine two icons of genre fiction, one world wide web and many hours of procrastination? Genuinely brilliant works by those mastercraftsmen; the fans.

Sherlock Holmes versus Cybermen by Dan McDaidDan McDaid, British comic book artist/writer on such DWM strips as The First and Hotel Historia has taken a fans wish to see an unforseen adventure between the Doctor and Sherlock Holmes and made it into a one page masterpiece.

The Automatic Man sees Sherlock Holmes, in a top hat rather than his familiar Deerstalker, and Dr Watson getting caught up in an intriguing Cyberman plot involving human hybrids – with the Tenth Doctor bursting through the scene.

Each character is more representative of their various images rather than realistic models and his heavy shading recalls a lot of classic British comics like Dan Dare.

The piece was one of the many commissions that McDaid draws for anyone with a bit of spare cash and an over-active immagination.

More Series 6 “Split” Details

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 05:37 AM PDT

As you will no doubt have heard by now, Series 6/Season 32 of Doctor Who has been split by the BBC and Steven Moffat – resulting in a series at Easter and a follow on in the Autumn.

The announcement was made at the Edinburgh International Television Festival this morning as Steven Moffat and Karen Gillan took part in a Q&A called "Doctor Who: The Masterclass".

Initially, this has been reported as a split – however, this is not the case, according to Steven Moffat.

"I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything.

"The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series."

So there you have it – 2011 will not feature Series 6/Season 32 of Doctor Who. It will, instead, feature Series 6/Season 32 and Series 7/Season 33!

Conspiracy theories about why the BBC are doing this are of course, nothing more than theories. If they wanted to get rid of Doctor Who, the BBC would cancel it. By bringing the show home to its traditional Autumn/Winter setting in late 2011, this is a further demonstration of their long-term committment to the show.

Sylvester of the Shire?

Posted: 28 Aug 2010 10:00 PM PDT

The Dunoon Observer has reported that former Doctor Who actor Sylvester McCoy has commented on rumours concerning his casting in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit.

The Seventh Doctor Who - Sylvester McCoyThings certainly seems to be looking good – he told the paper that although he isn't in the running to be cast as the younger Bilbo Baggins, he is being considered for one of the "wizard parts":

"I am being cast in The Hobbit,' he said. "We're currently in negotiations – there are two of us under consideration. It's not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger."

McCoy was in the area in his capacity as the Cowal Highland Gathering Chieftain, an invitation that he clearly relished.

"It was an honour to be asked to be chieftain," he said. "I'm the Chuffed Chief of Cowal Games. I grew up with the games – it was a big part of my childhood. I remember trying to sneak in without paying – and usually succeeding!"

It would of course be superb news to find that the Seventh Doctor actor had been cast in such a massive movie – fingers crossed!

TWIDW Special Report - 2011 Doctor Who Series Split Into Spring/Fall

Breaking news about the 2011 Doctor Who episodes is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/08_august/29/doctor.shtml . Doctor Who

Split Series in 2011!

Posted: 28 Aug 2010 09:39 PM PDT

Steven Moffat's Q&A at the Edinburgh International Television Festival has been full of surprises – not least confirmation of the rumour that Doctor Who will be broadcast in two runs during 2011!

While he wasn't describing Matt Smith's chin as "truly terrifying", or declaring the impending end of the regeneration limit:

"I think you might find that contradicted some time soon. It was mention in an episode but look, do you know what? If the day came that we had to have a 14th Doctor, we'd envoke the emergency protocol. We'd make something up,"

…The Grand Moff was busy comfirming what we have already speculated on this morning.

"The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

So – to clarify: Doctor Who returns in the Spring, breaks for the Summer, and returns in the Autumn in 2011!

Scheduling & Format

Posted: 28 Aug 2010 08:15 PM PDT

We've already seen today how the next series of Doctor Who will commence shooting in September – quite a bit later than usual.

So what is the long term impact of this? BBC chief Jay Hunt has apparently told Digital Spy:

"We're talking about what form Doctor Who will take. I think the interesting thing with having Steven [Moffat] running that show now is it will be very much a creative decision. He will decide what he thinks is right for the show."

But this doesn't necessarily tell us much about scheduling – it seems to allude more towards the format of the show.

Kasterborous has long been an advocate of Doctor Who being aired across the winter months – imagine watching The Empty Child for the first time in cold, dark evenings of December rather than sunny June! However there is more to this. Rumours have reached us in the past of possible changes to the schedule, and there was even talk of splitting Series 5 in half to accomodate the World Cup this year.

A change of format, however – this is a quite different kettle of fish. 90 minute episodes, as great as they were for Sherlock, probably wouldn't work for the show in its current form and tone. A series of two part episodes, on the other hand, might work quite well, although there's also scope for a series of 26 half-hour episodes.

Disagree?

Go and watch Rose and The End of the World without the "Next Time" trailers…

Karen of Christmas Future

Posted: 28 Aug 2010 07:20 PM PDT

Did you get the chance to meet Karen Gillan yesterday? The Doctor Who actress appeared at the Glasgow branch of toy store Hamleys to promote the new Amy Pond figure from Character – and had a few interesting things to say.

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan at the Edinburgh International Television FestivalIt seems that Karen Gillan – who this morning is lining up alongside showrunner Steven Moffat at the Edinburgh International Television Festival for a Q&A called "Doctor Who: The Masterclass" – doesn't know too much about the future.

When asked if she would be appearing in a third series of Doctor Who, Gillan replied:

"Who knows? I'm just taking it series by series and I'm just having fun. So, I don't know. I have no idea."

Meanwhile, she was happy to give a few hints about the Christmas special, which has recently finished filming with guest stars Katherine Jenkins and Sir Michael Gambon.

"We've finished the Christmas special so that's all in the can and it's a good one.

"It's really funny but it's also heartbreaking and you get a glimpse into Amy and Rory's honeymoon, which is an interesting one.

"There's a really, really scary one (monster) in the Christmas special."

Series 6/Season 32 of Doctor Who commences shooting in September. Which seems a little late to us…

Here is Sarah Douglas talking about her role in the Doctor Who Adventure Game as the "blob-like entity" / Professor Meadows in this short video. We had assumed it may have been another BBC "Red Button" interactive Doctor Who episode before learning of the new Doctor Who Adventure Game series.

On a personal note, it was a real delight spending time with Sarah this past spring. We had her on our show when she during the early stage of this video game project, we would love to have back to speak more on it sometime in the future.
