No Daleks for Moff?

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 08:04 AM PDT

Information on the  2011 series of Doctor Who has started to surface more and more and show runner Steven Moffat has revealed another juicy titbit about what may (or may not) be in store for the Doctor.

Doctor Who boss Steven MoffatAccording to Moffat, the Daleks will not be appearing in the new series.

In a report run by Digital Spy, the Executive Producer commented:

"There will be a Dalek story when we've got a good idea for a Dalek story. [When that happens], there will be lots of different kinds of Daleks."

Some of you may be overjoyed at this news as there has been rumblings over the past few years that Skaro's finest were appearing once too often. Some of you may be disheartened to hear this news as the Daleks may be the only reason you watch Doctor Who (as if!), but let's not forget that the new series will be split into two halves next year so Moffat could be considering them as two separate series. When it comes to Doctor Who, there's always a twist in the tale!

Over the last five years we've been treated to some absolutely wonderful Dalek tales (Dalek, The Parting of the Ways, Doomsday, Journey's End) and some not so wonderful (Daleks in Manhattan, Victory of the Daleks) and maybe a year off to let them regroup and come up with another truly inspired plan may be the best course of action.

After all, we still have to find out what role the Eternal has to play…

TV Producers Block iPlayer Abroad

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:19 AM PDT

Independent Television producers have vowed to block the BBC's plans to make the iPlayer available overseas to UK licence payers.

Under ideas laid out by BBC Director General Mark Thompson at his MacTaggart Lecture to the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival overseas licence fee payers such as servicemen would be able to access VOD from anywhere in the world.

BBC iPlayerBut this new definition of the iPlayer's boundaries under cuts the current 'terms of trade' with the BBC and independent TV producers.

John McVay, CEO of the sectors trade group PACT commented that no agreement had been reached and that they would resist such a move:

"The terms of trade DO NOT allow for the iPlayer to be accessed outside of the UK as this cuts across the commercial rights of independent producers."

The 'terms of trade' were first negioatiated with the BBC for commissioning contracts in 2004 with an additional clause added in 2006 allowing independent producers to commercialise there wares on other VOD services after a period of exculsivity with the BBC had concluded.

However this agreement only covers rights in the UK. Even if an admittedly interesting technological development does occurr which allows the BBC to authenticate UK licence payers using the overseas service either seperate to or part of the iPlayer, the terms of the agreement would be stretched.

Rights agreements are staunchly nationalised. The oft muted "International iPlayer" for BBC Worldwide revenue streams in America where Doctor Who is part of an expanding British Invasion of shows, has faultered because of such rights boundaries.

On the issue of BBC Worldwides in-roads into new territories, BBC director-general Mark Thompson effectively announced a deadline of one year for the service to embrace this new arm of the business and launch the International iPlayer.

He stated:

"It's the right time to take a fresh look at whether the current terms are fit for purpose … we may need more flexibility from the producers."

McVay believes that the BBC could be cutting off its nose to spite its face if it offers this overseas service for free which could raise issues with BBC Worldwides ventures.

Despite BBC Worldwide syndicating Doctor Who and others to commercial third party aggregators such as iTunes, the chance to profit from a branded online platform using the popuarlity of these shows is going begging.

SJA Book Covers Revealed

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 10:17 PM PDT

Penguin Character Books have tantalised fans by released the book covers for two new Sarah Jane Adventure books The Nightmare Man and more excitingly, Death of the Doctor.

The artwork for the latter features Matt Smith in his tweaked costume and gives fans a first glimpse of the big bad for episodes 5-6 of the fourth series, the vulture-like Shansheeth.

Former Doctor Who executive producer/head writer Russell T. Davies is the writer of these episodes which feature Third Doctor companion Jo Grant (Katy Manning.) The novelisation was written by Torchwood script editor Gary Russell.

The Sarah Jane Adventures novelisations

The cover for The Nightmare Man features the character himself who bares a resemblance to the late Heath Ledger's Joker. The episodes themselves were written by Joseph Lidster who also writes the novelisation.

Since 2010 The Sarah Jane Adventures have followed in the legendary footsteps of Target and entered into the novelisation business with the whole of the first series, two episodes from the second and a further two from the third all receiving adaptations.

The novelisation of The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith marked the first time the Doctor had appeared in the format since the adaptation of the TV Movie in 1996.

Both Death of the Doctor and The Nightmare Man will be released on the 4th November.

The fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures will air in the Autumn.
