| Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:36 PM PST At least in the case of Forbidden Planet, and perhaps for all other British comic shops too (do let me know), today is the first day that new comics arrive on the shelf at the same time as for American comic stores. Which means that, in future, I won't have to do that little Wednesday/Thursday awkwardness, and we all get to see our comics at the same time. (Well, I don't, because I have to wait for my subscription package to arrive.) So I'm pleased to say it's today that Batman and Robin #19 (the last part of the Absence storyline, in which her real motivations are revealed, check out the preview pages here), Knight and Squire #4 (preview pages here) and Secret Six #29 (the finale to the Action Comics crossover, by Gail Simone) are out worldwide. Also, Alex Ross' gorgeous alternate cover for the forthcoming Action Comics #900 has been revealed... ![]() There are days when I'm so pleased to be in this business! Until next time, Cheerio. | ||

Most of you will remember that the recent Doctor Who Series 6 trailer featured River Song (Alex Kingston) and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) with mysterious tally marks all over their skin in scenes from the opening two-parter. Many had assumed a connection between the characters as the pair were the only ones seen with the markings.

| Posted: 11 Jan 2011 07:19 AM PST Kasterborous contributor Joe Siegler has been extremely busy recently, compiling and editing a marvellous compilation of Doctor Who clips from every every single episode (and then some) between 1963 and 2010! Covering all eleven Doctors and featuring almost every companion, these clips aren't exactly the obvious ones either, so it is well worth setting aside 40 minutes or so and enjoying what is possibly the ultimate tribute to the world's longest-running adventure series, Doctor Who! Incidentally, the charming opening picture of the Doctor and Amy is courtesy of Joe's daughter. Doctor Who History 1963-2010 from Joe Siegler on Vimeo. | ||

To help raise money for Children in Need, they will be showcasing their collection of Doctor Who replicas for all to enjoy. Foes of note include the Scarecrows (from Human Nature/ The Family of Blood), the well dressed Clockwork Droids (from The Girl in the Fireplace) and some Autons (Rose, The Pandorica Opens and a couple of classic stories) as well! The fearsome creatures will then make an appearance in The Pitt Building at The Cambridge Science Festival on the 19th and 20th March 2011. If you're in the area, now's your chance to come face to face with some of the Doctor's most terrifying enemies. | The Kasterborous Forum: Reborn! Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:50 PM PST Well it has taken a few months and lots of planning, but the new version of the Kasterborous Doctor Who Forum is now live and waiting for you to join! For too long the poor brother of the main Kasterborous website, we've decided to give the forum a shot in the arm with some very interesting new content that you'll be able to view over the coming months. In the meantime, signing up will bring you into a warm, fluffy world of Doctor Who fandom, a close-knit Doctor Who community that is possibly the nicest I've ever seen, anywhere. You know when you go down the pub and always feel nice and cosy with your usual crew, but venture to speak to slightly scary (but it turns out, knowledgeable) chaps propping up the bar? Well, that's the Kasterborous Forum! In addition to reasoned argument and a strict no trolls policy, the Kasterborous Forum will soon feature:
In fact we'll be starting with the forum exclusive competitions later on today – so sign-up now and keep an eye out, or check back to the Kasterborous Doctor Who news pages to see what we're giving away and how…
| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:34 PM PST A new season of Dark Shadows Dramatic Readings will be released later this year this year in advance of Tim Burton's big-screen remake starring Johnny Depp. The six self-contained horror stories are read by members of the original cast with contributions from some familiar faces to fans of Big Finish. The series, now produced by James Goss and Joseph Lidster, opens in May with The Blind Painter by Jonathan Morris. "It's a story about a man who wants to be the greatest artist in the world but he's simply not good enough," says Lidster. "A beautiful woman offers him the chance to be everything he wants to be but at a price." The story stars Roger Davis as Charles Delaware Tate and Nicola Bryant as the mysterious Eloise. Also available in May is The Death Mask by Mark Thomas Passmore. "This one's a bit different," says James Goss. "A lawyer, Tony Peterson, arrives at a millionaire's party, only to find that one of his fellow guests is the witch Angelique – calling herself Cassandra Collins. Soon, a man lies dead and Tony and Cassandra have to work together to try to survive the night." The series then continues in June with Simon Guerrier's The Creeping Fog – a chilling tale set in a London museum and D Lynn Smith's The Lost Girl which sees the damned soul of Josette Du Pres making a final journey. July's releases are The Poisoned Soul by James Goss and The Carrion Queen by Lizzie Hopley. The Poisoned Soul features Nancy Barrett as respected pillar of the community Charity Trask, whose body is possessed by the spirit of music hall star Pansy Faye. Charity's father, the evil Reverend Trask, features alongside Angelique in The Carrion Queen. "The previous stories have been a huge success," says Lidster, "so it's been great to follow on from that." "Dark Shadows was a phenomenally successful US series of the 60s and 70s," says Goss, "and we're thrilled to be able to celebrate its 45th anniversary with six more tales of the macabre." | ||

| January Podcast 001 - 11 January 2011 Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:30 PM PST Yes, it's the first podcast of January 2011 (the clue was in the headline), and it's CRUNCH TIME... or is it? We asked you if you approved of crisp eating during the podcast. And you wrote in to tell us what you thought. Now, it's decision time. Nail-biting stuff. Or not. YOU DECIDE! Nick Briggs (now with added beard, great on audio), David Richardson (quaver traitor) and Paul Spragg (self-confessed office manager) present another feast of Big Finish nonsense, with a clip from the upcoming Jago and Litefoot second series and a cliffhanger guaranteed to at least mildly interest you. There are also some tantalizing clips from the upcoming Eighth Doctor finale. So if earnest, in-depth podcasting is what you're after, please avoid this podcast at all costs. | Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:28 PM PST It's all change at SFX.co.uk as they've created a list entitled "16 Sci-Fi sex changes"! The list includes some popular, some bizarre and some downright odd changes of gender that popular science fiction characters have gone through over the years. Those of note include Red Dwarf, where the ship's computer Holly remodelled his pixalated face into an alternative version of himself he met in another dimension called Hilly, a film based on Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde "cleverly" redone as Doctor Jekyll and Ms Hyde, Dizzy (the female lead in Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers) who was originally a male trooper in the novel the film was based on, H G Wells changed into a woman in an episode of Warehouse 13 (quiet, Timelash fans!) and Spot, a cat from Star Trek: The Next Generation. But of course one of the most notorious (and hilarious) sex changes to occur in the world of science fiction happened in 1999 on Comic Relief night when the Doctor, bereft of all his regenerations spontaneously regenerated into a woman, namely Joanna Lumley. As the Doctor got through body after body during a series of unfortunate events, he ended up in this shapely guise, and seemed more than pleased. SFX wrote:
Now make of this of you will, as it was written by Steven Moffat himself! Will this one day become canonical, will the maestro of time meddling stories weave this one into his rich tapestry? Probably not but it's funny to think what could be! You can see the full list at http://www.sfx.co.uk/2011/01/08/16-sci-fi-sex-changes/3/
| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:28 PM PST Okay, this one was a long time coming. The connection between Doctor Who and a bloke who called himself a Doctor and wrote about Who people was too much of a given… a picture like this one was bound to happen sooner or later! This Seuss-Who combo was envisioned and illustrated by Bill Mudron, who appropriately titles this masterpiece The Cat in the Hat Came Back (Eventually). So what's the best bit? The oversized-bow tie paying homage to The Cat in the Hat? Rory as Thing 2? Amy as Thing 1? Prisoner Zero in a fish bowl? Or the fact that the Doctor's balancing on an Atraxi eyeball? Here's Mudron on why he did what he did:
Now really. It's easy to compare Moffat stuff to Seuss stuff, but to do so negatively like whoever wrote that criticism, you'd have to have the heart of a BBC One controller in the late 1980s. Dr. Seuss stories are easily as brilliant for their ridiculousness as modern Doctor Who. Now, we know the Doctor likes fish fingers and custard. But does he like green eggs and ham?
