Early reports coming from British fans who have the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (pictured above) indicate that the issue contains an intriguing news item that would be of interest to US (and presumably North American) fans. There apparently is to be a new montly Doctor Who magazine produced out of the US, to be entitled Doctor Who Unlimited. It will be a 44-page magazine with different content from that of Doctor Who Magazine (and not sold in shops in the UK, other than by import presumably). At the time of writing this blog entry it is unknown when this magazine will launch in the US (and presumably Canada), nor is there much idea as to how the content shall be different (other than apparently there will be more "fan interaction" - whatever that means). It has not been revealed whether Doctor Who Unlimited will also contain a comic strip (as DWM always has), although it will include free posters. It is a (positive) sign of the times that Doctor Who has become successful enough in North America that someone is willing to have another go at producing a US based Doctor Who Magazine. The first attempt was a US Marvel comic in the mid-80's which re-printed DWM strips in colour with a few additional DWM-like factual features and commentary, which lasted a few years. This will be the first attempt to do a magazine with completely different content, if the early reports are to be believed. Whatever happens, it should be interesting!

| Davies: Torchwood ‘a different form of Sci-Fi' Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:09 AM PST Not affraid of a bit of hyperbole Russell T. Davies has been chatting, along with stars Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), Bill Pullman (Oswald Danes) and Mekhi Phifer (Rex Matheson), at a Torchwood: Miracle Day panel for the Television Critics Association – promising fans that the upcoming co-production between Starz and BBC Worldwide will be something brand, spanking new for Sci-Fi fans. Torchwood: Miracle Day sees the population of Earth witness a miracle- for one day no-one dies. Then the next day, then the next. The Earth suffers an overnight population boom, while the old get older and the dying continue to die- but never quite pass away-the global situation becomes critical and in the middle of the mystery stands an immortal, suddenly not so unique, and his new team. Davies, understandably, is chuffed to bits with his new 'forum':
In keeping with Davies' new 'forum' they'll be no easy answers, no quick resolutions:
And that shape is set to make an indelible impression on us when it airs this summer:
Torchwood: Miracle Day will air this summer simultaneously on BBC 1 in the UK and on the Starz Network in the USA. (via Afterelton)

| Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:09 AM PST With most of the roles from the novel being filled Peter Jackson has been busy reuniting members of the Fellowship for his upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit- with the former Doctor rumoured to be taking the role of Orlando Bloom's father Thranduil the Elvenking (so he's to blame!) In The Hobbit, Thranduil the Elvenking holds the realm of Mirkwood where Bilbo and his band of Dwarves are held captive for not revealing the intentions of their journey (Mirkwood is kind of like a Middle Earth Customs Desk) to swipe Smaug the Dragon's gold only to be rescued (SPOILER!) by Gandalf. Bizzarly the role of Thranduil was played by Austrian film director Otto Preminger (The Man with the Golden Arm) in the animated nightmare that is Jules Bass/Arthur Rankin, Jr's 1977 adaptation. Previously, the Tenth Doctor had been linked with the role of Hobbit-in-chief Bilbo - a part that eventually went to Martin Freeman (Sherlock) – and the role of Bard the Bowman, a grim archer from the town of men, Esgaroth. Despite the rumours being unconfirmed by anyone involved with either The Hobbit or David Tennant, he is listed on the first part of a planned two part saga's oh so reliable IMDB page (which includes roles for Leonard Nimoy as Smaug and Brian Blessed, who seems to be on there for just being BRIAN BLESSED.) A listing that unfortunately hasn't been granted to the former Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy who was confirmed as Radagast the Brown. So, is this an early scoop or some very clever Hobbit fan letting their imagination fly after hearing yet more rumours that Orlando Plank (Elizabethtown) will be returning to Middle Earth as Legolas? Already, the New Zealand filmmaker has brought both Sir Ian McKellen (X-Men) and Andy Serkis (Burke & Hare) back to reprise their roles as Gandalf the Grey and Sméagol/Gollum. (via SlashFilm) | ||
| Posted: 11 Jan 2011 11:55 PM PST On Saturday, February 19th, I'll be taking part in an event at Orbital Comics on Great Newport Street in London, in the company of indie comic creator Paul Rainey. I'll be signing from 4pm, and then taking part, from 7pm, in a panel discussion with Paul. Here's the rather lovely poster, which makes me look somewhat skewed and oblong, but at least interesting. Perhaps I should change my name to Ygor. Anyway, since it's on the same day as Picocon, I may well pop over there first and say hello (ooh, free admission for past Guests of Honour!) I hope I see you on at least one of those occasions. Until then, Cheerio! | ||

| Posted: 11 Jan 2011 10:16 PM PST Steven Moffat has announced changes to the episode order for the 2011 series of Doctor Who.Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, the executive producer revealed he has shuffled the running order of the series with the Mark Gatiss penned story moving into the second half of the season, due in the Autumn. The story was originally scheduled to run in the first part of the series due in the spring. The empty slot will now be filled by an episode written by Steve Thompson. Although new to Doctor Who, Thompson is an established writer who is best known for his work with Moffat as the author of the second Sherlock episode, The Blind Banker. He won the Arts Council's Meyer-Whitworth Award for new writing for his fist play, Damages, in 2004. Thompson's script will run as the third episode in the series, with the long awaited Neil Gaiman script moving into position four. | ||
