Christmas Episode Poll Results!

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 05:24 AM PST

Over the past six weeks on Kasterborous, we've run two polls to gauge our readers' feelings about Christmas Doctor Who episodes.

There's nothing heavy in it – no surveys asking if the Doctor's angel-accompanied ascension in Voyage of the Damned is anything more than RTD being cheeky – simply a chance to rate your favourite Doctor Who Christmas special before A Christmas Carol… and after.

We had a great reaction, with around 1000 votes cast altogether, indicating that both polls were read and voted on by the same number of people, and in many cases the same people; this last part is important.

Now before continuing, a few things to note. First of all, Christmas specials are all self contained stories, except The End of Time. This might be worth bearing in mind when checking the results. Secondly, all Christmas specials feature some interesting casting with the exception of The Christmas Invasion which largely makes use of characters we have already met, much like the quintessential regeneration story, 1974′s Robot. All subsequent Christmas episodes have what we might once have referred to as "stunt casting".

Finally, only one of the episodes stars current Doctor Matt Smith and is written by Steven Moffat. As you probably realise, the others are all written by Russell T Davies, and all star David Tennant

The first poll was run in late November, with the initial results as follows:

  • The Christmas Invasion 30.28%
  • The Runaway Bride 14.79%
  • Voyage of the Damned 14.08%
  • The Next Doctor 17.61%
  • The End of Time 23.24%

As you can see, despite airing over 5 years ago, The Christmas Invasion remains popular, more than likely because it is the Tenth Doctor's first adventure. Similarly The End of Time (which refers to the Christmas 2009 episode rather than the entire story or the New Year's Day 2010 conclusion) saw success, although noticeably lower than the first special. As you can see, the "in-between" episodes have similar ratings.

A week after Matt Smith starred in Steven Moffat's A Christmas Carol our second poll was run, and this tells quite a different story…

  • The Christmas Invasion 20.32%
  • The Runaway Bride 6.09%
  • Voyage of the Damned 5.42%
  • The Next Doctor 6.09%
  • The End of Time 13.54%
  • A Christmas Carol 48.53%

Doctor Who A Christmas CarolWhat is most interesting about the results, isn't the strong showing of A Christmas Carol (something that can be attributed to it being the most recent episode; think of the Favourite Doctor polls in DWM) but rather the way the spread of the voting on the other episodes has stayed almost constant.

It is as if fans of earlier Christmas episodes liked them for a particular reason but A Christmas Carol spoke to them in a much more powerful way, prompting them to vote in such a way; the results basically show that the results for the older episodes were "shaved" with A Christmas Carol receiving the bulk of the votes.

Fascinating stuff; love it or hate it, A Christmas Carol certainly did what it said on the tin and maybe this is the reason it has so far proved so popular – it's just so Christmassy!

Ghosts of India Free from Audible

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 03:52 AM PST

There's something about the word 'free'. It makes food taste better, makes buying one extra item of the same thing make more sense and has helped Tibetians escape China occupation of its country (well, maybe not the last one) but now to you dear Doctor Who fan, itis going to help you hear the DoctorDonna's adventures in India, for free!

Doctor Who: Ghosts of India, narrated by David 'son of Patrick' Troughton (The Curse of Peladon, Midnight), has the Doctor and Donna team up with Mohandas 'Mahatma' Gandhi (who I'm told can wield a mean nun-chuck) to solve the mystery of the 'half-made men' – ghostly figures of white who have shadows where men have eyes – and could be about to unleash an ancient, all-powerful god of destruction upon the Earth.

A free sample of the audiobook is available from Audible, where you can choose either this title or any other audiobook (not that we're biased or anything) for free when you sign up with the site.

K-9 Creator at SFX Weekender

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 11:54 PM PST

The SFX Weekender event is getting closer and closer for those of you lucky enough to be attending and for all you lucky ticket holders who are Doctor Who fans (if you're not, why on earth are you here?) there's another treat in store as it's just been confirmed that Bob Baker, one half of the partnership that bought us K-9, will be attending the spectacle!

Baker who alongside the late Dave Martin co-wrote classic Doctor Who serials such as The Three Doctors, The Invisible Enemy and The Armageddon Factor, will be coming along with Paul Tams – a man who not only has had an illustrious career illustrating Terry Nation's Dalek Annual and several other Doctor Who books but has also been involved in bringing the character of K-9 back to life with his own series since 1997.

Now that Baker and Tams have finally got their project off the ground and K-9 finally has his own series (Doctor Who has three very successful spin offs, what other show can claim that? And no, Star Trek doesn't count-so there!) they'll be attending the weekender event where they will undoubtedly spill all the beans on the making of the show!

It's a must for all and some tickets are still available if you call 08700 11 00 34 or visit the SFX website at www.sfxweekender.com/tickets. The event takes place on the 4th and 5th of February 2011 in East Sussex.

Lance Parkin On Reprints

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:52 PM PST

Our friends at the Doctor Who Reprint Society have published a fascinating interview with esteemed Who novelist Lance Parkin, author of such greats as Dying Days, Cold Fusion, Just War, The Infinity Doctors, and more recently The Eyeless.

The discussion includes Lance's thoughts on the similarities between the books and the modern television series, which books he would like to see reprinted, and a definite answer as to whether or not the Eighth Doctor is the Doctor seen in The Infinity Doctors.

Revealed in this excerpt is the Parkin point of view on Doctor Who canon.

"There's no 'canon' for Doctor Who, everything's available for use.  Both new types of Daleks look more like 'movie Daleks' than anything from TV, and the movie Daleks look like the Daleks from the Annuals and comic strips.  Human Nature was hugely influential on Doctor Who for ten years before anyone pointed a camera at it, far more so than, say Galaxy 4 or Terminus."

Now here's a question for you.  Do you think Doctor Who has canon?  And if so, we'll bring back memories of the Series 3 debates and ask which one's correct – Human Nature for the Seventh Doctor or for the Tenth?  Or might they both be?

You'll more intelligent discussion on Doctor Who novels if you read the full interview!

Tom Baker vs Jon Pertwee

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:31 PM PST

Digital Spy and tabloid The Mirror have observed Tom Baker's comments that he made in Doctor Who Magazine a little while ago regarding his thoughts on his predecessor Jon Pertwee.

Bakers' remarks are a little cutting and if you're a fan of Jon Pertwee, you may not like what he had to say. Remarking on his focus for work Baker commented:

"He liked the idea of big sums of money for voiceovers, so I would say in Jon's earshot that someone had offered me £15,000 for a voiceover, but I turned it down because it was going to take a whole hour…this wasn't true, but I could hear Jon's heart pounding. In fact, he died of a heart attack shortly after that. I think that's why."

Pertwee died in 1996 due to a heart attack but it's highly unlikely that that was actually the cause. Many who worked with Jon remarked that he was a perfectionist when it came to creating his roles, some may have thought of that as being difficult but it was really more of a need to get what he was doing right, which is what someone who is good at their job does.

Maybe Baker felt slightly inferior to Pertwee, taking over the role from his impressive and well received five year stint as the third Doctor. Baker threw a second blow by describing the actor as:

"Jon Pertwee was an insufferable know-all… Jon found it physically impossible to buy a drink."

Baker's words may ring with a touch of "pot calling the kettle black" but at the same time it could well be that Pertwee did not get on with everyone. However it is rather curious that Baker only feels he can share this information with us now…
