| Torchwood – Whoniverse or Not? Posted: 23 Jan 2011 08:34 AM PST Doctor Who genius Russell T Davies was recently at the Television Critics association to promote the latest series of Torchwood that's due out this year. The former show runner commented that he is very pleased with how the new series, under Steven Moffat's reign is unfolding:
Davies is still Executive Producer on the two Doctor Who spin off series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures but how exactly do the three programmes connect these days? Russell remarked:
Both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor's have appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures in the past year with only the tiniest of cameos at the end of Torchwood series one. But how embedded in the Doctor Who universe is Torchwood? There have been cameos from Torchwood monsters in Doctor Who but never a full on meeting of the lead characters from both shows. Certainly Torchwood is a much more adult show and encouraging children to watch it is something Russell T Davies is keen to avoid. Captain Jack has dipped in and out of the Whoniverse and Gwen and Ianto have been involved in Dalek escapades but will Torchwood ever truly align with the Doctor Who world? We'll have to wait and see… (Via AssignmentX)

| Posted: 23 Jan 2011 05:26 AM PST Items of clothing worn by Tenth Doctor David Tennant when he worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, are among more than 10,000 costumes and accessories that go on sale next month at the company's rehearsal rooms in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The sale, on 12th February, includes over 1,000 pairs of shoes, 500 shirts, 300 hats, Egyptian head-dresses, a variety of military uniforms, cloaks and clerical outfits. It includes numerous items worn by Tennant, including his understudy costume from the 2008 production of Love's Labour's Lost, a green brocade doublet with bronze ornate buttons, breeches, leather boots and socks and his backstage slippers. Tennant himself was a guest at the 2011 British Comedy Awards which took place at London's O2 Centre on Saturday evening, where he presented the People's Choice Award to comedienne Miranda Hart. Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, has revealed on his blog that he is currently filming an episode of the BBC daytime drama Doctors. Baker has appeared in the series three times before, in 2001, 2006 and 2009. His theatre tour playing Inspector Morse in House of Ghosts has now finished, although Baker notes there are plans to try to get a tour list together either in the Autumn of 2011 or Spring of 2012. Fourth Doctor Tom Baker, who celebrated his 77th Birthday last week, has said on his Forum that he has decided on two projects for Big Finish Productions. Baker indicated in the past that he is keen to work with Big Finish. He has completed two stories for BBC Audio, Hornets' Nest and Demon Quest. | ||
| Posted: 23 Jan 2011 12:07 AM PST Popular toymakers Underground Toys – the company associated with Doctor Who action figures in the USA – has secured a deal with BBC Worldwide to create Doctor Who plush toys in all territories. This collection of soft toys will incorporate characters from the current series, while a separate range will feature characters from the previous eras, and all will produce unique noises tailored to each model. If you're not sure what a plush toy is, it's a sort of soft toy styled as something other than a teddy bear. For an idea of what Doctor Who fans can expect, Underground Toys has a Star Wars plush toy range Robyn Morgan is the licensing director at Underground Toys:
Richard Hollis, head of UK licensing at BBC Worldwide, added:
Set for release in June, the range will be previewed at Toy Fair on the Gear 4 Games stand (E160) later this week. (Via Licencing.Biz)
| Posted: 22 Jan 2011 09:33 PM PST Website theolismith.com has shown some example of what can be achieved on an iPhone with a bit of artistic flare and a useful app! Pixel Artist is available to download via the Apple app store and is perfect for creating cutesy little pictures. If you have a talent like Oli's then you can create the samples that he's posted on his website, including a self portrait and some tiny versions of the Fourth and Seventh Doctors. Smith's work isn't the first time he's turned his attention to the world of Doctor Who however, he's not only written several fiction books (Nuclear Time – an Eleventh Doctor story), short stories and comic strips-he's also the writer of some of the Doctor Who games that are available including the Nintendo Wii game Return to Earth, the Nintendo DS game Evacuation Earth and the most recent game for the iPhone and iPad, The Mazes of Time. But Oli's drawings are only the start, for those of you with access to the Apple app store, why don't you try a hand at drawing some Doctor Who pictures and showing us the best results that you can muster up? No prizes for the winner except a feeling of overwhelming brilliance that your creation was better than anyone else's… (Thanks to Matt) | ||
| Tucker Teases Experience Exhibit Posted: 22 Jan 2011 08:29 PM PST Special effects designer Mike Tucker, a chap whose resume is practically drowning in involvement on both classic and modern Doctor Who, seems to be heavily engaged in preparations for the upcoming most attractive attraction of all time, The Doctor Who Experience. At the very least, Tucker's in on it enough to warrant an interview with SFX, where he discusses monsters, Zygons, potential childrens' reactions, Zygons, Daleks, Ice Warriors, and Zygons. You may hear about a Zygon or two as well. Here's Tucker on how all these monsters will look when we finally get to see them up close:
What about the Autons? Will they be posed like shop window dummies? Nah. That'd be ridiculous. Also, whatever you see when you line up in London on opening day may not be all there is to 'experience.' Tucker and the rest of the design crew haven't ruled out making occasional additions and surprise appearances of various Who critters/robots during the expected long life of the exhibition.
The Doctor Who Experience will be unveiled in the capital city of England, where it'll hang around for a while before settling down in a permanent Cardiff home.
