| Torchwood: Week Nine Production Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:56 AM PDT It's week nine in the production of Torchwood, and the end of the second month of the shoot! However, there's still some three months of filming left to go so no time to wind down for the production team - as usual there was filming in progress by two or more units over the course of the week, both around Los Angeles (with scenes taking place at places like the beach and an old stadium) and on the Warner Bros studio backlot. Plus, a rather important birthday to celebrate ...Cast highlighted this week included John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Ernie Hudson, Dichen Lachman and Alexa Havins - not to mention of course the silent majority of supporting actors, extras and stand-ins working on the production! The BBC Production Office reported that this week would see filming commence on Jane Espenson's episode five. Two new directors were also revealed as working on the production, Gwyneth Horder-Payton and Guy Ferland. Horder-Payton's credits include Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy and The Shield; Ferland has also directed for the latter three shows, with other credits including The Mentalist, Human Target - IMDB reports him as working on John Shiban's episode six of Torchwood: Miracle Day.It was also reported elsewhere that John Wells is one of the producers for Torchwood; his credits include Southland, Shameless, E.R. and The West Wing. Times cited within reports below are in Los Angeles local time, except where indicated Monday Torchwood hits the beach! It was one of those rare occasions when the production was in an open place, with members of the public appearing in the background if they so wished (as long as they agreed to the conditions laid out on the notices!).Eve Myles and Mekhi Phifer were on location today, with filming taking place by the DogTown skate park on Venice Beach. Tweets from Dichen Lachman suggested she was enjoying the beach, too! 16:00 AF After thinking it was going to rain all weekend, Paul Sauser was also on hand to see some of the action at the skate park, including Eve Myles apparently being filmed as Gwen on her mobile. Additional photos of her were published by Caught on Set.
Tuesday - WednesdayAfter such a public location on Monday, the production disappeared into relative obscurity once more. However, it was possible to infer that one of the units was present at the Inglewood Forum based on snatches of conversation on Twitter:07 20:48 CS Working a show for Starz called Torchwood Allyson Floyd chatted a little bit about the life of a stand-in: 08 14:53 AF I spent more time wrangling with UPS today than I spent on set! :P Oy. Meanwhile, the BBC Production Office were prepping for two kinds of activity later in the week ... 08 14:45 BBC We have a birthday coming up soon, 3 days to be exact. ThursdayTwo locations were listed for activity Thursday, the James Oviatt Building (home to the Cicada Restaurant), and the Yard, a kick-boxing club - however, reports indicated other locations were visited throughout the day, with at least two units operating! Matthew Arnold reported that filming was taking place on a street at his uncle's, and this unit included Alexa Havins.Meanwhile, another unit had to contend with a minor disaster on set: 09 17:18 AF Then it's back to work on the set of
| Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:30 AM PDT (Note: title does not mean 4 more people watched Doctor Who than last week.) This weekend in France, Doctor Who's Series 5 finale "La Pandorica s'ouvre" (The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang) got a nice increase on some of the previous weeks. While retaining around the same audience share, "La Pandorica s'ouvre" was watched by 340,000 viewers on France 4 on Saturday night – that's 1.5% of the total audience, and means more French viewers tuned in than the previous week. The Series 5 audience figures in France have been up and down, with the middle of the series attracting a bit of a slump, so its good to see a strong ending for the episodes which marked the end of Matt Smith's first full series as the Doctor. A comparison with previous Series 5 audience figures here can be found at Beans on Toast – meanwhile for a general overview of French audience figures on all the main TV channels on Saturday evening hit tele.premiere.fr/Audience-tele (With thanks to Aurélie Demonchaux) | ||||||||||||||||

This TARDIS was constructed out of 250 balloons by Chris Florey. It took him about 12 hours from start to finish.

| Posted: 13 Mar 2011 06:53 AM PDT It really must be like a fandom soap opera round at The Grand Moff's house, where the keeper of all things Doctor Who gets to write new episodes, read other people's new episodes, talk about the series all day long – and berate his smarter offspring! We've already seen in the past how Steven Moffat's children seem to be as into the show as he is, but this latest example is a cracker – so much so in fact that we've decided to begin a new semi-regular feature called Moff-Watch, were we keep an eye on the Who-Keeper's Twitter feed for more gems of domestic bliss. The first concerns the Weeping Angels, notably referring to The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone two-parter from 2010…
Brilliant, isn't it? Steven Moffat's kids out-smart him and spot plotholes! Just like every family in the UK, but with added TARDIS! (Incidentally, you can also follow Kasterborous on Twitter – we're quite chatty from time to time too, and provide updates to all of our news and reviews!)

| Posted: 12 Mar 2011 11:10 PM PST Canadian Channel SPACE have revealed the last series of Doctor Who had an average of 391,000 viewers. The news was in a press release noting that January was the most-watched month in the channel's history and looking forward to the new series of Doctor Who which is expected to be shown on the network shortly after its UK premier. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan return as The Doctor and Amy Pond for Season 6 of fan and critical darling. Filmed in North America for the first time ever, the two-part opener finds the Doctor, Amy, and Rory (Arthur Darvill) on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the Utah desert to the Oval Office in 1969. Alex Kingston (ER) reprises as River Song, while Mark Sheppard (SUPERNATURAL) guest stars as Canton. | ||||||||||||||||
| Posted: 12 Mar 2011 10:33 PM PST Flavour of the month actor James Corden is to return to Doctor Who for an episode of Series 6 (or whatever we're all calling it now). The rumour mill is chugging overtime about what this story will contain and old foes have been spotted – but how will it all come together? Corden's character of Craig Owens didn't really stretch his acting ability so we're all hoping he's given more to do than be a lovelorn lost soul. By the pictures and updates he's been posting on Twitter recently though he and Matt Smith seem to be having a whale of a time. It came as some surprise to us all, however, to find that Matt Smith actually has to sit in makeup to get his famous Eleventh Doctor hairstyle! Be warned though, his Twitter account seems to be giving away some of the secrets his (or other episodes) may contain, so if you subscribe to his feed read updates with extreme caution. | ||||||||||||||||
| First Statue, Second Doctor, Tenth Planet Posted: 12 Mar 2011 07:46 PM PST
The first announced member of this set of collectible Signature Edition statues depicts none other than the Second Doctor himself, Patrick Troughton, as he appeared at the end of the Season 4 William Hartnell finale The Tenth Planet. This full-colour likeness is accurate, despite the story's black-and-white recording, thanks to numerous behind-the-scenes shots of Troughton in costume. It's a work of art that stands 9-inches tall (an inch taller than the Maxi Busts on their stands) and comes boxed ready-to-display with an individually-numbered Certificate of Authenticity, so you can prove to all your friends that this isn't one of those "fake" Patrick Troughton statues floating about. You can pre-order your Patrick Troughton Signature Edition Statue at the Forbidden Planet website for just £49.99… that's 17% off the £59.99 RRP! However, you'll have to wait a few months – Forbidden Planet doesn't expect this Second Doctor replica to be in their warehouse until July 15th. But if their description and that image up there are anything to go by, it'll be worth the wait!
| A New Twist to Our Meet Up: The Post Gallifrey One Party [Video] Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:29 PM PST Keeping with the theme of Gallifrey One's Catch 22: Islands of Mystery, our Post Gallifrey One Party which was our Doctor Who: Podshock and Gallifreyan Embassy seasonal meet up and party on Second Life taking place the following Sunday (27 February 2011) after Gallifrey One had a tiki feel to it. Victor Mornington @vic1st and his fellow owners of the land of Katrina (The Doctor Who Experience, which will be or has recently changed its name (to possibly the Doctor Who: Exposition?)) out did themselves once again flooding the area, making it a huge pool of water complete with inflatables to cruise on for the stage area of our party. The stage and dance floor were on a giant deck. Traditionally our meet ups start with TARDIS tours across various Doctor Who themed areas of Second Life led by Victor. This time we did things a bit different. Instead we had a Podshock TARIDS Mod Exposition taking place in that time period. I had the pleasure and honour of being one of the judges for it along with our own DWP Correspondent Ian Bisset @The6thDoctor and a representative from Hands of Omega (one of the leading TARDIS simulator providers in Second Life). Together we explored various TARDIS console mods along with the rest of their interior and chose the best within three categories. | ||||||||||||||||

| The Loss of an Icon: Nicholas Courtney Posted: 12 Mar 2011 04:20 PM PST
It's been more than a couple weeks now since word first traveled across Twitter of the sad news that we lost Nicholas Courtney. For many we us, we were in disbelief and shock. If you heard the latest episodes of Doctor Who: Podshock or The Sonic Newsdriver, you will know that I was literally on my flight back from attending Gallifrey One 2011 in Los Angeles when word first came to me. After such a 'Doctor Who high' that was Gallifrey One, to have this news come on its heels... well, it's never a good time for news like this, but we can be grateful it was after, not during the convention. I want to thank Correspondent Graeme Sheridan @The2ndDoctor for posting the news to our site (see: R.I.P. The Brigadier, Nicholas Courtney Dies at Age 81). I had meant to follow it up, posting some of my thoughts, but I found it difficult to do. I was even dreading having to record the next episode of The Sonic Newsdriver only because I would have to report it. Though now that has come to pass. |
