Matt Smith talks Isherwood to the Radio Times

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 11:02 AM PDT

This week's issue of the Radio Times sees Matt Smith feature on the cover for the first time this year as he returns to Saturday evening - though in this case "The Naked Doctor" is representing his new role as the gay icon Christopher Isherwood in the BBC Drama Christopher and His Kind, which will be broadcast on BBC2/BBCHD this coming Saturday at 9:30pm.

In an interview with the magazine, the actor compares Isherwood's experiences in 1930s Berlin to those of his time-travelling alter ego, the Doctor:
"He left 1930s England and arrived in Berlin, a place that in comparison was an alien planet," says Smith, whose role as the young author is the first major drama he has taken on since being cast as the Time Lord. "There's this burgeoning doom of Nazism emerging. It feels like there are vampires walking through the city. There are these brown shirts who are becoming more and more prominent and more and more vocal. They've started ransacking shops."

The new issue of the Radio Times is available in the shops from today.

You can also read an interview with Matt Smith on his role via the BBC Press Office.

Isherwood in the Radio Times

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 11:01 AM PDT

In this week's Radio Times, on sale today (Tuesday, March 15th) you can find out more about the forthcoming drama Christopher and His Kind, which stars Matt Smith, who graces the cover in character as writer Christopher Isherwood.

In an interview with Radio Times, Matt Smith compares Christopher Isherwood's experiences in 1930s Berlin to those of his time-travelling alter ego, the Doctor.

This certainly looks like must-see viewing for any Doctor Who fan. Christopher and His Kind also stars Lindsay Duncan, Imogen Poots, Toby Jones and Douglas Booth and airs on Saturday, March 19th at 9.30-11.00pm on BBC TWO and BBC HD.

Big Finish Day – June 11th!

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 09:00 AM PDT

A big day for Big Finish is on its way, appropriately referred to as the second annual Big Finish Day, when Big Finish's big stars will all gather together at Barking Abbey School in the county of Essex to celebrate the best Doctor Who dramas the world has heard but never seen!

Topping the agenda is the announcement of the Doctor's next audio companion, who will be present to speak at a panel and sign autographs.  Big Finish is, at present, tight-lipped about the identity of the companion; we don't even know which Doctor he or she will accompany (though it may be the Eighth, as Lucie Miller actress Sheridan Smith, pictured, is scheduled to make her departure at the end of this month in the highly-anticipated To The Death).

An unbelievable quantity of guests will be in attendance so you can give them your autograph, and perhaps pay them for theirs.  Signatures manufactured on the spot by their owners will be available for purchase from Bernice Summerfield actress Lisa Bowerman, Dalek voice and BF Doctor Who top man Nicholas Briggs, writer Nev Fountain, audio and Dalek writer Robert Shearman, writer Andrew Smith, voice actress Beth Chalmers, and voice actors Duncan Wisbey and Toby Longworth.

There will also be free (FREE!) autographs from about a million BF behind-the-scenes personnel, from writers to cover artists to sound designers to pretty much everything else.  While there are too many names to be able to display them all on this page, we'll tell you that they include BF exec Jason Haigh-Ellery, Gallifrey and Bernice Summerfield producer and current TV series script editor Gary Russell, and cover artist/Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried animator Alex Mallinson.  For the full list of guests in attendance, see this announcement at Tenth Planet Events.

Of course, we can't forget the most important deal of the day: deals!  That's right – show up on Big Finish Day and encounter discounts aplenty on a wide selection of Big Finish stories, including Doctor Who!  It's unclear presently whether any of these bargains will extend to the internet, where last year's Big Finish Day exclusively took place; we'll keep you posted if we hear anything.

Big Finish Day takes place on June 11th from 10AM to 4PM.  Barking Abbey School, where the event is located, is on Longbridge Road, Barking, Essex, IG11 8UF… right here on Google MapsTickets are £25; get 'em at Tenth Planet Events.

Colin has been online for a few days now – we were given to understand that his presence on Twitter was a secret, but thankfully he's opted to embrace the online Doctor Who community that frequents the Twittersphere, which is pretty superb!

You can check out what the colourful Sixth Doctor actor has been tweeting about recently just below…

Matt Keeps Covered

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Popular red-top news-today-chip-paper-tomorrow rag The Sun claims that Doctor Who star Matt Smith was asked to keep his clothes on for the biopic about writer Christopher Isherwood, which you can catch next week on BBC Two.

Christopher and His Kind tells the story of Isherwood's journery to 1930s Berlin and subsequent sexual discovery in the city's pre-war homosexual "scene". As such this is a considerably departure from the family viewing of Doctor Who, and quite a departure for Matt himself.

While Matt played key parts in various adult dramas and movies over the past few years (Womb sticks in the memory) Christopher and His Kind was apparently the first time Matt had to get used to stubble rash.

According to the paper, a source said:

"Because Doctor Who is a firm favourite, we thought it would be better if we didn't show Matt's behind in his new drama."

You know, it's good that Matt's main career was given such consideration by the BBC and his agent, presumably, but seriously – this was a news item?

This is one of those stories that you could make up – a famous person, an interesting situation, some logic quoted by an unnamed source – and whether true or not, it does make you wonder exactly how much we read in any paper is genuinely true and sourced and how much is sourced from other means (like the imagination…)

New Series Episode Titles!

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 07:07 AM PDT

Fresh from Twitter, BBC entertainment bod Lizo Mzimba (found at @lizo_mzimba) have this evening revealed the titles of the first two episodes of the new series!

Series 6 is high likely to kick off on BBC One on Saturday, April 23rd (known as Easter Saturday; this is yet to be confirmed, however) with The Impossible Astronaut opening the run. This is episode one of a two-part adventure that may or may not be concluded the following day with Day of the Moon. These episodes were shot largely on location in the USA, notably in Utah, last December.

Written by Steven Moffat and starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as the Doctor, Amy and Rory, these episodes guest star Alex Kingston as River Song – so watch out for clues and potential revelations from her!

Here's Lizo's original Tweet:

Just got invite to screening of first two new Dr Who eps. "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon". Gosh, the year's gone quickly.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who Magazine have since revealed that:

DWM has the titles for the next five episodes too – but we're going to sit on them for now. They're for our next issue's news page…!

Doctor Who Series Six Opening Story Titles Revealed

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 07:05 AM PDT

Screenings for the opening two-part story of Series Six of Doctor Who are now being arranged, and invitations have revealed the titles of those episodes to be The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon.

The BBC's Entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba first revealed the titles this afternoon: "Just got invite to screening of first two new Dr Who eps. 'The Impossible Astronaut' and 'Day of the Moon'. Gosh, the year's gone quickly." This was confirmed by Doctor Who Magazine, who also mentioned they would reveal further titles soon: "Invites for the DW press launch have been sent out today, confirming titles for Eps 1 & 2 as The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon. DWM has the titles for the next five episodes too – but we're going to sit on them for now. They're for our next issue's news page...!"

The date of the premier on television in the United Kingdom has yet to be announced by the BBC.

Putting together the 2011 Stories

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 06:59 AM PDT

So based on the news from Doctor Who Magazine and from various places over the past few weeks, here's what the year 2011 gives us in the world of Who

Episode 1 & 2 (The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon) by Steven Moffat
Episode 3 by Steve Thompson
Episode 4 by Neil Gaiman
Episode 5 & 6 (Gangers / The Rebel Flesh) by Matthew Graham
Episode 7 by Steven Moffat

SUMMER BREAK (Boo!)

Episode 8 by Steven Moffat
Episode 9 by Mark Gatiss
Episode 10 by Tom MacRae
Episode 11 (The God Complex) by Toby Whithouse
Episode 12 by Gareth Roberts
Episode 13 by Steven Moffat

Do I have that right? Does this mean we're not getting a big two part finale? Or is the idea that since the Christmas special is so near, it will lead into that?

It seems so very odd to not have any two parters (aside from the resolution of the mid-season finale) in the second half of the season whatsoever…

Lost Stories Update

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 12:30 AM PDT

Fans of Big Finish's The Lost Stories can shout "Hooray!" as the company has announced more details for its series three release which will commence in October 2011.

The first three stories to be released all feature the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa and all come from scripts that were intended to be made for television but never got the chance for a multitude of reasons.

The Elite is the first release of the series. Written by John Dorney from a script by Barbara Clegg (Enlightenment), Producer David Richardson promises:

"It's a big roller-coaster ride for the Fifth Doctor, which builds to a wonderfully cataclysmic and exciting climax."

The November release is Hexagora by Paul Finch from a storyline by Peter Ling (whose previous writing credits include The Mind Robber) and Hazel Adair. The cast will include Jacqueline Pearce (Blake's 7) and Toby Hadoke (Moths ate my Doctor Who scarf).

The Children of Seth is the big December release. Originally penned by Christopher Bailey (Kinda, Snakedance) and now adapted for audio by Marc Platt (Ghost Light, Spare Parts), you couldn't hope to have two better Doctor Who writers handling a story! David Richardson explained:

"[The script] is dark and political, and filled with some interesting characters with their own agendas. And we've got Honor Blackman, David Warner, Vernon Dobtcheff and Adrian Lukis all in the same Doctor Who story – how great is that?"

There are more stories to be announced for the third series. Keep your eyes peeled for more information!

Dark Dimension Animated?

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:57 PM PDT

A rather fascinating interview with future Hobbit wizard and former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy has appeared at ShadowLocked, where the actor reveals some of his recent work – including reference to The Dark Dimension

For the unitiated, The Dark Dimension was to be a 30th anniversary episode of Doctor Who (originally intended as feature length although it might have been episodic) and largely centred on the Seventh and Fourth Doctors in an alternative history in which the Fourth Doctor never regenerated. Featuring a time-bending villain (to be played either by Rik Mayall of BRIAN BLESSED! depending on which source you believe), redesigned Cybermen and a new Dalek (the inspiration for Dalek Storm), The Dark Dimension would have been an interesting new direction for Doctor Who.

Thanks to the work of Philip Segal in securing the rights to make Doctor Who in the USA (the eventual TV movie starring Paul McGann) the 1993 anniversary episode was shelved, despite a fascinating script and the verbal agreement (as far as we know) of all five surviving Doctors.

So – what's happening with The Dark Dimension now? Well according to Sylvester in this interview at ShadowLocked, controversial fan Ian Levine is:

…putting together a piece of work that didn't get completed over the years, and I was there as The Doctor to kind of 'Doctor Who' them up. There are pieces that have been done too for The Brigadier and The Master that were never quite completed, so that work will make them a rounded whole. Also there's the 30th anniversary show of Doctor Who that was never made, and we're going to do a cartoon version of that. I was doing my role in that as well.

…there were a couple of projects that we were doing. One was actually filming to beef up a piece that's already been done, and the other was recording voices with camera so they can do a lip-sync for the cartoon.

There are a few…Downtime – that's one that's got a lot of dialogue. The[inaudibleVortex – much shorter. Search Out Space; and Destiny Of The Doctors…also some audio lines for Dark Dimension.

If accurate (and we have no reason to doubt Sylvester) then this represents a very exciting project that fans around the world will want to see finished. Thanks to the shelving of The Dark Dimension, loyal Doctor Who fans in 1993 were "treated" instead to "Dimensions in Time", and had to wait another 3 years for a new episode and a total of 16 years between series.

As soon as more news about this thrilling project emerges, we'll have it here on Kasterborous!

Seventh Doctor Trilogy!

With a new month comes new news from Big Finish unveiling their next Doctor Who trilogy.

Starting soon, we have a brand new Seventh Doctor trilogy that kicks off in July and the first story contains some very familiar enemies of the Doctor. Robophobia sees a return of the Vocs, Dumbs and Super Vocs, the robot menaces that gave the fourth Doctor a tricky time in The Robots of Death.

Featuring as a direct sequel to the classic 1977 story, Robophobia also branches out into new realms as Executive Producer Nick Briggs explains:

"[The story] goes in an entirely new direction, and I don't just mean out into space."

The story will feature Nicola Walker, who is known for playing Ruth in the BBC series Spooks but also starred in Steven Moffat's teacher sitcom Chalk.

The trilogy will take a short break in August for the celebratory release of Big Finish's 150th Doctor Who story and then is back in with a double bill in September with the final two titles including The Doomsday Quatrain by Emma Beeby and Gordon Rennie, where the TARDIS land in seventeenth century Florence and the Doctor encounters Nostradamus. Finally, the trilogy ends with House of Blue Fire by Mark Morris within which we're promised:

"There's an isolated house, a bunch of terrified squaddies, a legendary monster…"

It looks like it's going to be an interesting summer…
