| Planet of the Spiders - DVD Cover and Details Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:40 PM PDT 2|Entertain have sent DWO the cover and details for the April DVD release of Planet of the Spiders. What begins as innocuous research into ESP turns into a deadly mind battle, with the terrifying spiders from the planet Metebelis Three pitted against The Doctor, his friends and Time Lord K'Anpo. At a Tibetan-style spiritual retreat deep in rural England, a clandestine circle of chanting brethren unknowingly call upon the evil powers of the Metebelis Spiders, whose quest for the perfect blue crystal leads them straight to the Doctor. He must travel to the alien planet to meet the Great One, merciless ruler of her spiders and human slaves, who plans to take over Earth. The future of the entire universe is in the Doctor's hands, but if he is to face the fear the Great One sees in his mind, then he must face the certainty of total destruction. Could this be the Time Lord's final death? Special Features: Disc 1: • 6 x 25 mins approx colour episodes with mono audio. • Commentary - stereo. With actors Elisabeth Sladen, Nicholas Courtney and Richard Franklin, producer / director Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks. • Coming Soon - a trailer for a forthcoming DVD release. • Programme subtitles. • Subtitle Production Notes. Disc 2: • The Final Curtain – five years after its re-invention in colour and its rise to massive popularity, it was time for Doctor Who’s charismatic lead actor Jon Pertwee to move on… and with him the production team that had guided the show throughout that period. This documentary looks at the background to the Third Doctor’s swansong. With actors Jon Pertwee and Richard Franklin, producer / director Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks, designer Rochelle Selwyn, visual effects assistant Mat Irvine and actor and author Mark Gatiss. Narrated by Glen Allen. • John Kane Remembers… – actor John Kane memorably played the gentle, slow-witted Tommy, reborn through the power of the Metebelis crystal. An accomplished writer and series creator, Kane now lives in France, from where he looks back on his memories of the story. • Directing Who with Barry Letts – Barry Letts is perhaps most famous as producer of Doctor Who, but he was also responsible for directing some of the show’s best-loved stories. Barry looks back on his career as a director in this documentary. • Now & Then – the latest instalment in our ongoing series takes a trip back to some of the locations used during production of the story. • ‘Planet of the Spiders’ Omnibus Edition – the full-length omnibus edit of the story, presented here totally unrestored. • Omnibus Trailer • Photo Gallery - production, design and publicity photos from the story. • Radio Times Listings in Adobe pdf format. + Planet of the Spiders is released on 18th April 2011, priced &ound;20.42. + Compare Prices for this product on CompareTheDalek.com. | Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:30 PM PDT Big Finish Productions have issued a press release confirming Tom Baker's involvement in future Doctor Who audio adventures: We’re delighted to announce that Tom Baker will be playing the Fourth Doctor in a number of audio adventures for Big Finish, to be released from the beginning of 2012. Storylines and scripts are already at an advanced stage, and we plan to start recording early in the summer. The first season of six single-disc releases will begin in January 2012, with a second season of seven single-disc releases to follow at a date to be confirmed. There will also be a five-disc box set entitled Doctor Who: The Lost Stories – The Fourth Doctor Box Set... The producers across the Fourth Doctor adventures are Nicholas Briggs and David Richardson. “As many of you will know, we've been talking to Tom for a long time,” says Big Finish executive producer Nick Briggs. “David Richardson and I went to visit Tom at his home not long ago to chat about it all. We had a really great time. At that point, I sincerely felt that had we taken a microphone with us, Tom would have started there and then - but, of course, there are always finer details to sort out. Now that our plans are in place, and Tom has enthusiastically told the world that we're going ahead, we thought it best to follow-up with our own announcement. Rest assured that in the coming months we will be releasing news on this as soon as we are able.” Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: "I am delighted that Tom will be joining the Big Finish audio adventures of Doctor Who. As a small child, I remember how charismatic and engaging his performance was each Saturday tea time - and we are all looking forward to recreating that era again." We can confirm that the companions in these productions will be Louise Jameson as Leela and Mary Tamm as Romana, and some familiar monstrous faces from the past will be popping up too. In early 2010, DWO interviewed Tom Baker, who expressed interest in possibly working with Big Finish. Listen to the Big Finish portion of our 90-Minute interview with Tom Baker below:

Former Doctor David Tennant was nominated in the Actor (Male) category for Single Father, but lost out to another "Doctor", Jim Broadbent, who won the award for his role in Any Human Heart (Broadbent was one of the Doctor's short-lived incarnations in Moffat's Comic Relief special, The Curse of Fatal Death). The results were published 'live' during the course of the evening via the Society's media feed on Twitter.

| Posted: 15 Mar 2011 05:24 AM PDT After months of rumours, speculation, hints, announcements from Tom Baker and nothing from Big Finish, the producers of original Doctor Who audio dramas have finally confirmed that the legendary Fourth Doctor actor is indeed on board with them and will record a 6-part series during the summer for release in January 2012! This isn't Tom's first foray into audio drama of course – he's already taken part in two excellent audio series for BBC Audiobooks alongside Richard Franklin as Mike Yates in Paul Magrs' Hornet's Nest and Demon Quest. These are cosier, more traditional types of audiobook, however, as opposed to the full-cast audios that Big Finish produce! In addition to the first series of 6 adventures, a 5-disc boxset of Lost Stories and a second series of 7 adventures are also scheduled, meaning that Tom isn't just popping in to say hello, he's on full alert as the Doctor once again!
Tom will be joined in these adventures by Louise Jameson as Leela and Mary Tamm as Romana I… and the wording on the Big Finish website doesn't make it any clearer than that!

| Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:50 AM PDT Last week we took the unprecedented step of closing the Big Finish forums, after some remarks made on certain threads moved away from discussion of Big Finish and audio drama and into realms we felt were unacceptable. After a few days of reflection, and listening to the thoughts of our loyal customers, we have decided to reinstate the forum as of today. As many of you have said, it would be a shame for all the informative debate, close contact between Big Finish and its listeners and sheer camaraderie to be curtailed just because of the misjudged behaviour of a few. We would like to stress that we know the vast majority of our listeners are sensible people who would never deliberately entertain indulging in prejudice, bigotry or bullying. We will not be seeking to ban anyone from the forum in this instance, in the hope that we can all make a fresh start. However, we would like to make it clear that we are now operating a zero-tolerance policy on unpleasant, anti-social, prejudiced, bigoted and bullying behaviour. The Big Finish Forum is meant be a fun place for people to express their views on Big Finish productions. With the continuing, loyal help of our listeners, we hope it will continue to be so for a long time to come. To help achieve this aim, we are now looking for voluntary moderators who might be willing to donate some of their time in supervising the content of the threads (in line with guidelines that we will draw up). If you are interested please send in your details to enquiries@bigfinish.com | ||

| Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:33 AM PDT You know I've got this urban fantasy novel coming out from Tor next year? Well, more of a metropolitan fantasy, in that it's set in modern London, and involves the Metropolitan Police. Anyway, if you'd like to have a police officer in it named after you (real names only, no net names), and donate to Japanese disaster relief while you're at it, why not take part in the auction here? And do take a look at what other authors have offered interesting things for you to bid on here. You've only got until Sunday, so act quickly, as they say! Cheerio! | ||
| Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:15 AM PDT He might be stuck sorting out a problem if two Amy Ponds for this year's Comic Relief, but Doctor Who star Matt Smith reckons he fancies taking part in one of the annual challenges. Rather than doing something "funny for money" celebrities do something pretty serious – like embarking on desert expeditions or climbing mountains. Speaking to TV & Satellite Week, Smith confessed that the opportunity would depend entirely on his busy Doctor Who schedule.
Smith, also recalled his own favourite Comic Relief moment – which just happens to be The Curse of the Fatal Death, the Steven Moffat-scripted Doctor skit which featured Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor and Jonathan Pryce in excellent casting as the Master back in 1999. Also featuring Daleks and a host of regenerated Doctors, The Curse of the Fatal Death is now available to watch on the Official BBC Doctor Who site.
Set your alarms for 8pm on Red Nose Day (this Friday night) when you will be able to tune into the first of this year's Moffat-scripted Comic Relief Doctor Who specials, Space followed later in the evening by Time.

| Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:23 PM PDT We've got a LOAD of non-series news to get through today, but one of them (this one) is more important than the others. It's comic relief week, and people around the country are fundraising to help those less well off than ourselves. One such person is Cameron McKewan, best known to online fans as Blogtor Who, who will be hosting Aberdeen Student Radio's online show The Big Mix Grill this evening from 5-7 pm UK time. We're expecting there to be a tiny bit of a Doctor Who theme to proceedings! Done in a good cause, for the two hours they're on air Blogtor and his co~host aim to raise as much money as possible for Comic Relief through the JustGiving page. Remember that Comic Relief doesn't just help schemes abroad in third world countries – they also fund good causes in the United Kingdom, something that might become ever more relevant in the coming years as goverment cutbacks lead to the culling of vital services. You don't really have an excuse not to listen to at least part of the show, which you will be able to pickup online at aberdeenstudentradio.com or view on ustream.tv/channel/thebigmixgrill. You can also show your support by joining the FaceBook page. Best of luck to Blogtor for this evening, hope it all goes well! | ||

| Posted: 14 Mar 2011 07:52 PM PDT Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, has recently joined twitter and can be followed at @SawbonesHex,Baker, who calls himself as an 'Actor, columnist, writer, husband, father, Wycombe Wanderers fan, grumpy old man', also has an official website at colinbakeronline.com. Colin Baker has also paid tribute to the late Nicholas Courtney. In a post on the website he describes Courtney as 'the guvnor' and a true gentleman. He talks about attending Courtney's funeral which took place last week. It was a substantial turn out, many of those attending from the world of Doctor Who, which was a tribute to the great man that Nick was. I remembered that whenever I met him he never failed to ask after my daughters whom he enquired of by name. He was an impressive man with great memory for people and a great interest in them. I gather there will be a memorial to him later in the year and have no doubt that the attendance at that will be huge and we will hear countless stories of his charm, humour and thoroughdecency. I will miss him hugely and can only imagine how Karen, his wife, will be feeling. My heart goes out to her. |
