| Posted: 22 Mar 2011 08:33 AM PDT BBC Books have announced the forthcoming publication of a novelisation of the great 'lost' Doctor Who serial Shada! Retelling an adventure that never made it to TV screens (despite several subsequent attempts), prolific Doctor Who TV script writer Gareth Roberts has adapted the original Douglas Adams draft scripts and production notes as well as original designs and the various completed material. For long-standing fans of Doctor Who this is one of those "holy grail" moments. Previous attempts to restore the tale have come and gone, with the Tom Baker-narrated bridging work on a BBC video release in 1993 and a BBCi-produced audio/animation starring Paul McGann and Lalla Ward coming closest. So notorious has the story become that it became the subject of a Radio 4 series, Shelved, in 2009. The reason this release is so notable is that production of the planned finale to the 1979-1980 season of Doctor Who was halted part-way through due to industrial action at the BBC, and as such the story was never completed. The only footage from the story that fans will be familiar with is the punting sequence from The Five Doctors. Published with the full support of the Estate of Douglas Adams and Adams' agent Ed Victor at Ed Victor Ltd, Shada will be the first ever novelisation of Douglas Adams's work on Doctor Who, and will be published by BBC Books in March 2012 as a £16.99 hardback. | ||

| Novelisation of Shada to be published in 2012 Posted: 22 Mar 2011 06:27 AM PDT BBC Books have announced that they are to publish a novelisation of the "lost" Doctor Who serial Shada. Shada retells an adventure that never made it to the screen. Production of the planned finale to the 1979-1980 season of Doctor Who was halted part-way through due to industrial action at the BBC, and the story was never completed. Now, drawing on drafts of the script and production notes as well as original designs and the material that was completed, prolific Doctor Who TV script writer Gareth Roberts tells this unique story, featuring Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor, in full for the first time. Published with the full support of the Estate of Douglas Adams and Adams' agent Ed Victor at Ed Victor Ltd, Shada will be the first ever novelisation of Douglas Adams's work on Doctor Who. The book will be published by BBC Books in March 2012 as a £16.99 hardback. | ||
| A Novel(ization) Idea Part 2: Doctor Who and Shada Posted: 22 Mar 2011 05:11 AM PDT
Here's something Doctor Who fans have wanted for 30 years: a novelization of Shada, the 1979 story featuring Tom Baker and Lalla Ward that was written by Douglas Adams. Production was only partly done when a strike killed it. It remains to be the only unfinished Doctor Who story. Douglas Adams was asked to novelize it (and his other Doctor Who stories, City of Death and The Pirate Planet) many times throughout the 1980s but by that point he was a very famous author and the going rate for Doctor Who novelizations were a bit below his pay scale. Fans had to make do with fan novelizations produced by the New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club. Until now. Blogtor Who reports that new series writer Gareth Roberts is writing a brand new novelization of Shada that will come out in 2012. Fans who recall Roberts' exquisite Season 17 pastiches as part of the 1990s Missing Adventures range of novels will tell you they couldn't have picked a better author to write this. This is sensational.

| Posted: 21 Mar 2011 11:51 PM PDT Another year and another round of awards to be handed out to various artists, SFX.com however, has decided to do something slightly different by introducing for the first time ever, the SFX Blog Awards! Encapsulating all those lovely bloggers from that well known place we call the internet, the SFX team has worked hard to find not the money making sites but rather the ones that are run by "fans of the genre" who are simply running their blogs due to passion rather than prof- Right, STOP THIS! Hold on a minute! Now, I've noticed a tendency for this website to get rather silly in the past. Now I do my best to keep things moving along, but I'm not having things getting silly. This so-called SFX Blog Awards is extremely silly indeed! Now, nobody likes a good laugh more than I do…except perhaps my wife and some of her friends…oh yes and Captain Johnston. Come to think of it most people likes a good laugh more than I do. But that's beside the point. The point is, how has the noble website of Kasterborous been overlooked? Did no one on the SFX forum nominate it? Did the longest-running Doctor Who news blog fall down the back of the sofa? Still, no point being bitter, is there? Make sure you vote for all of the Doctor Who options people. Now, let's have a good clean healthy news item. Off you go, Mez!) Right, thanks. As I was saying, there's plenty of Doctor Who related sites to vote for as well. In the "Best SF Podcast" category is The Doctor Who Podcast, in the "Best Fan Community" section you can vote for Gallifrey Base, in "The Best SF News Blog" category you'll find that the Doctor Who News Page is in the nominees, in "The Best Franchise Specific Site" section there are two Doctor Who sites: Life, Doctor Who and Combon followed by Who Fix (who?-Ed) and finally in "Best Celebrity Blog" section there are three mysterious Doctor Who related writers: Paul Cornell, James Moran and Neil Gaiman. If that wasn't enough to get you happy voters to, well, vote, then SFX is also running a very silly but very funny Doctor Who related poll in order to celebrate the return of the series next month. Questions about the Doctor's gender and political stance come into the equation! So, go on over to the SFX site for the Blog awards and or vote on their bonkers Doctor Who poll, it's the most fun you'll have voting all year! | ||

| Baker Sighting Leaves Locals Shaken Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:19 PM PDT CAMBRIDGE: Last Saturday, in the Pitt Building on Trumpington Street, Colin Baker, the man who is believed by authorities to have portrayed the sixth incarnation of the central character in science-fiction serial Doctor Who between 1984 and 1986, was spotted writing his name all over other people's property at the Cambridge Science Festival. Witnesses on the scene insist that he was doing so on request; however this may be a mere cover story contrived by a mysterious underground organization known as F.A.N.S. (Fellas And Nerdy Sisters) who were also seen in the area attending a Doctor Who exhibition as part of the Festival. Mr. Ben Steele, seven, was one such bystander who found himself violated by Mr. Baker's signature:
Steele was one of many present who were declared incurably insane after making preposterous comments similar to the affirmation that Daleks aren't real. Medical practitioners have directly linked this condition to symptoms of English calligraphy reading "Colin Baker" existing somewhere within a twelve-foot radius of the patient. It seems Mr. Baker has since left the premises and investigators are sounding the all-clear, nonetheless cautioning the public against future appearances of Colour-Coated Colin. An anonymous insider (definitely NOT the writer of this article) provided these instructions to ensure your personal safety:
Meanwhile, if you wish to attend the Doctor Who exhibition, which features Smilers, Judoon, Clockwork Droids, and Daleks, or just the Cambridge Science Festival in general, you have until Sunday 27 March to do so.
