American Awakening

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:12 AM PDT

This year is certainly another good year to be a Doctor Who fan as the amount of merchandise continues to grow!

One of the most popular items is of course the BBC's "classic" Doctor Who DVD range which has been stepping up the number of releases over the last couple of years to get the entire existing back catalogue for Doctors one through eight made available to the public on shiny disc format. It's been a busy start to the year in the UK with eight releases taking us up until the end of March 2011 (remember when there used to be one every two months?!) and the same is taking place over in the USA as well, with the BBC stepping up their release schedule  for the good American people.

With that in mind, anyone who's building their collection of digital Doctor Who in the land of the free might like to know that you've got not one but two releases coming your way in July. Those that were worried that there was only going to be one and that the BBC were going back on their promise of two releases a month, don't panic!

BBC and distributor Warner Home Video have announced that the 1966 First Doctor story The Gunfighters will be released with the final Peter Davison story to be released on DVD, The Awakening.

Over in the UK, the two releases comprise a box set called Earth Story; whether that will remain the case for the US release is yet to be seen. But rejoice, your collection is almost complete, hooray for that!

The Gunfighters will be a single disc release consisting of four episodes. Extras include a commentary, two featurettes, PDF files and the brilliant production subtitles which, as always, offer a fascinating insight into the making of the story. For the Fifth Doctor's adventure, The Awakening, you're going to be treated to three featurettes, audio commentary, extended and deleted scenes, a photo gallery, PDF materials and production subtitles. Both stories will be in full screen format, English mono soundtrack and English subtitles.

A release date has been (more or less) confirmed as July 12th 2011 with The Gunfighters costing $24.98 SRP and The Awakening priced at $14.98 SRP but as ever, things are subject to change so keep your eyes peeled.

Gaiman Happy with Who

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Writing on his blog recently, Series 6 scriptwriter and fantasy author Neil Gaiman revealed how pleased he was with the final edit of his forthcoming Doctor Who episode.

Featuring Suranne Jones and Michael Sheen in guest roles, the episode is scheduled to appear fourth in the new run, expected to begin on April 23rd (although this is yet to be confirmed). Stardust and Sandman creator Neil Gaiman also blogged that the show looked polished:

"I just saw the finished version of my Doctor Who episode. I was happy. There were moments and even scenes I missed, but that's always the way."

"Mostly I was just impressed by the performances, direction and music… They spent money on this one and it shows."

Gaiman's involvement with Doctor Who sees a continuation of Steven Moffat's policy of using writers who are well-known in other genres. Scripts in Series 5 came from usual suspects such as Mark Gatiss and Toby Whithouse along with big names like Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love, Actually) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly),

Weeping Angel Bust Unleashed!

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 05:38 AM PDT

Just how evil is a bust of an already quite menacing statue? If you buy your collectibles on the strength of their evilness (using the standard 1 to 10 scale on the Davros-o-meter ) then this must surely have the highest evil credentials of any toy since Mattel's Pagan Fun Barbie.

Modelled on their debut appearance in Blink, the 8" art deco bust is the last in the Doctor Who Masterpiece Collection of finely crafted busts and is beautifully sculpted – setting back anyone brave enough to purchase it £49.99 from special retailers such as Forbidden Planet amongst others August 28th 2011.

But just how evil can a bust be?  Will it waddle over to you and smash your toes? Will you find yourself, startled out of a deep sleep with the Bust reaching out to grab you? Or in the ultimate act of evil will it transport you back in time and make you buy another one?

The only way to find out is to buy one… oh and don't blink. I think that goes without saying.

The Best Doctor Who Poems in the Universe

It's June 2011 and Series 6 is in its mid-season break and a unique new Doctor Who book has been published - but it needs your contributions NOW otherwise it will never happen and could cause no end of wibbly wobbly timey wimey problems!

Just like the Tenth Doctor and Shakespeare used the power of words to defeat the Carrionites, this book needs you to use the power of words to create poems about Doctor Who. They can be about the Doctor, his companions, his enemies or even what Doctor Who means to you and is open to everyone.

For example:

Daleks, Daleks, everywhere
On the ground, and in the air.
You hear their voice and you know your fate
Because they are only here to exterminate!

But I'm sure you can do a lot better than that!! There will also be a special mention to anyone who can rhyme Raxacoricofallapatorius!

Please email your entries to: drwhopoems@GJBpublishing.co.uk

• Include your name, age (if you want!) and location.
• Open to any age
• Poems can be a maximum of 30 lines in length.Maximum of two per person.
• All work should be your own and not previously published.
• Winning contributors will retain copyright of their work.
• The top 100 poems will be selected. The editor's decision is final.

We also are looking for budding Vincent Van Gogh's to send in your
Doctor Who line drawings to decorate the book. (Your name will be credited alongside your work).

Pictures to be sent via email, and need to be 300dpi jpegs and under 10MB
You can submit a maximum of two.
Deadline for entries: 14th May 2011

The Tides of Time archive

The eighth Doctor can be dismissed merely an embodiment of lost hopes and promises unfulfilled or broken. However, he was salvaged by the fans of Doctor Who and has enjoyed innumerable adventures across a fractured multiverse of print, audio and comic strip. Coverage of the books and audios will feature in later releases, but for now here are some responses to his one television appearance, in the 1996 TV Movie, as well as some original fiction with different takes on the eighth Doctor's fate. These articles were published in The Tides of Time between 1996 and 2002, except for one which though dealing with the Oxford Doctor Who Society's viewing of the TV Movie in 1996 was published in the last (to date) issue of Skaro in 1997. All the PDFs bar Independence Day (which has been reset for this release) are scans from the original photocopies or printouts of Tides, and reflect the technology used to make the originals.

Reportage
  • West Coast Story. An optimistic outlook on Doctor Who's prospects written shortly before the broadcast of the TV Movie, misreading some of the auguries, by Matthew Kilburn. Published in Tides 19 (1996)
  • Independence Day. An account of the society's reception of the TV Movie's broadcast, by Matthew Kilburn. Published in Skaro [vol. 5 no.] 13 (1997)
Fiction
  • An End to Things by David Bickley. A new psychologist at the Institute is drawn to patient number eight. Published in Tides 25 (2000)
  • Have We No Workhouses? by Derek Haywood. The eighth Doctor enjoys a post-TVM career as a media executive in the age of Cool Britannia, while his previous selves suffer. Published in Tides 27 (2001)
  • Reliquary Man, part one by Alexandra Cameron. The Doctor and his goddaughter Chandra meet Alexis de Tocqueville – but what are Polaroids and automatic weapons doing in mid-nineteenth century France? Published in Tides 28 (2002)
  • Reliquary Man, part two by Alexandra Cameron. An old foe waits for the Doctor. Published in Tides 28 (2002)
Retrospective

Eighth Doctor fiction by Alex Cameron can also be found in Tides 30 (2005), Tides 31 (2005) and Tides 32 (2006), all of which can be downloaded in full as PDFs.

The Doctor Who Bar!

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Hey – have you been to the Doctor Who Bar yet? No?! The Doctor Who Bar is a ever growing group of Doctor Who fans who get together every Saturday from 7.00pm – and watch episodes from the show's 50 or so years.

The USP here is that The Doctor Who Bar isn't an actual, tangible bar – instead it is an online group of people that all watch Doctor Who in the comfort of their homes and then discusses it on Twitter as they watch!

Episodes (DVD, VCR or online) play at 7.30 pm, and then quotes, reviews, thoughts, ideas and general discussion take place in the Twittersphere using the #DoctorWhoBar hashtag.

After the episode, the Twitter discussions then appear on the official Doctor Who Bar website www.doctorwhobar.posterous.com and membersof the group can vote for the next episode they wish to watch the following Saturday!

Sounds like a great idea, and the first serial the group will be watching/discussing is Logopolis!

The group is also looking out for anyone who might be able to help out in anyway – contact them on doctorwhobar@gmail.com if  you are interested.

The Tweeting Tease!

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 09:30 PM PDT

When he's not impressing the known universe with his writing/producing/general Scottishness Steven Moffat also likes to tease questioning fans via the magic of Twitter.

The pestering tweeters have been pressing Doctor Who's Lead Writer and Executive Producer on numerous fronts but the two that perked most fanboys were: Will we see two River Song's in the new series?

"Well. You'll have to wait a bit, but…"

Now we all know that cloning plays a part in Matthew Graham's double header The Rebel Flesh and Gangers so could we be seeing two River Songs – which will no doubt fulfil some fan fantasies.

The second most intriguing nugget of info comes from a half finished sentence during the Comic Relief Specials Time and Space. Amy's opening gambit to the Doctor seemed to be quite an important point but was soon cut off by a skirt related mishap. Moffat confirmed that whatever Amy was about to say, well, it was quite important:

"That WILL come back. But not for a while. Oh, how ANNOYING!!"

So if you're not already scrambling back to watch and listen to the specials closely, go now!

And then when you've done that, don't forget to follow @KasterborousDW on Twitter, where you will find updates to all of our news and reviews!
