Return of the podKast!

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 08:10 AM PDT

Well, it's taken quite a bit of work to get this far, but I am delighted, ladies and gentlemen, to announce the return of the Kasterborous podKast (with a "K", remember?).

It is a remarkable that we started with the very first one back in 2007, and in the intervening years it is fair to say that we have been summarily trumped by Podshock and DWOCast who regularly issue good quality and compelling podcasts.

Except… they're not Kasterborous, are they?

Now the story of our 10th podkast (with a "K", yeh?) is an interesting one that goes back to September last year. At the time of his trip to the UK, Brian A. Terranova and myself had hoped to record a lot of traditional podkast material, but sadly this didn't transpire.

This is one of the dangers of running a website between two different timezones.

So prompted by our own Patrick Riley – who might well be launching a side project of his own in the future or at the very least teaming up for the new podKast paradigm (as I've been rather pretentiously, yet satisfyingly, describing it) – we've pushed on with a slightly different take on the traditional Kasterborous podKast (with a… oh sod it).

We're breathing new life into the old girl with what we hope will be a team approach. Patrick and Brian will hopefully be taking part  at some point in the not too distant future (along with any other Kasterborous team members who happen to be free and on Skype) but this time around I'm very happy to announce the first podKast in a very long time presented by myself with admirable support from podcasting veteran James McLean, the powerhouse behind the Millennium TV show campaign podcast BacktoFrankBlack.

Big thanks must go to James for editing down our first chat about Doctor Who – we'll be bringing you more podKasts in the near future with a selection of interesting interviews.

In the meantime, join me as we get to know newcomer James McLean in the first of what we hope will be a regular new Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast!

What is particularly interesting is that some versions should show the grey-style alien (a Silent?) while others don't…

Day 17. One day I'll be rid of it. One day. If you'd like to help spur me on, do click on the widget top right. We're nearly there! To sample from your comments on that page: Christian, I absolutely, definitely, promise not to let the beard eat you. Thanks, my lovely editors, Wil Moss and Dave Bradley, for your donations. And Nightsky, the beard says it will indeed spare you. Thanks, everyone.

I can't believe how much I'm doing at once right now. But it all still seems to be working out. First up, I'd like to thank Mark Salter, who's generous £200 donation towards the Japan relief effort gets his name featured as a Metropolitan Police Sergeant in my new novel, out next year from Tor. Well done, Mark.

I look forward to seeing some of you at my signing at Chaos City Comics in St. Albans tomorrow, from 1pm. I've done an interview about it (and my writing in general), for the Herts Advertiser. And you can see three preview pages of what we're mainly talking about (I think that's as many as we dare show for fear of giving the game away), that is, Action Comics #899 here.

I hugely enjoyed C2E2 in Chicago. What a brilliant audience, many of whom hadn't been to a comic convention before. I signed and signed and signed, notably an enormous combat spoon, and did many interviews, of which this first video one is up, with Newsarama. The beard takes on a life of its own in that. It's like they've captured bigfoot. Also out of the blocks is the (thankfully on audio) Word Balloon Comics Podcast. The lovely Gene Ha has many pictures from the convention floor, and also from the dinner we shared with Bill Willingham and the invited guests of Fables. That was a brilliant night, as was the one where the Middleman crew met the Chicks Dig Time Lords crew. And there was much partying, and much random wandering of halls and bars and room parties. It was great to be on the DC panels as well, and to meet so many new friends. Thanks to one lady's generosity, I now have a Shaun of the Dead cricket bat, which I have promised to somehow use for the beard appeal. I await your suggestions.

Speaking of conventions, at the forthcoming Kapow Comic Con in London, I'll be part (alongside many other creators) of an attempt to set the record for 'Most Contributors to a Comic Book'. Should be fun to do something like that with an official from the Guinness Book on hand.

On Sunday, I'm off up to Manchester, to record my new horror play for BBC Radio 4, 'Something in the Water'. I'll do my best to get cast photos and stuff. It's meant to be on sometime this autumn, and is produced/directed by the wonderful Nadia Molinari, who also did 'The State of the Art'.

Anyway, must dash, so until I see you in my travels, Cheerio!

Exhibition in Cardiff to close its doors this weekend

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:35 AM PDT

This weekend marks the end of an era in Cardiff as its Doctor Who Exhibition will be closing its doors. The exhibition – which has been visited by over 500,000 people since its launch – will be closing this Sunday to make way for the Doctor Who Experience, which is to be relocated to the city in 2012. However, as Wales Online reports, Graham Jones, who runs [...]

Cardiff Exhibition Closes this Weekend

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:12 AM PDT

With the Easter holidays just around the corner tourists from all over the world will be flocking to the Doctor Who Exhibition in Olympia, London generating a healthy revenue stream for BBC Worldwide and the surrounding area.

While the revenue for the soon to be closed Doctor Who Exhibition at the Red Dragon Centre, Cardiff Bay will still be spooling into BBC Worldwide's account, one place it won't be helping to improve the economy is the area now most synonymous with Doctor Who: Cardiff.

This Sunday sees the exhibition open its doors for the last time – to be replaced in 2012 with a new Doctor Who Exhibition at a different site.

The year long gap between competing exhibitions means that the Cardiff Bay area will lose out on thousands of pounds in tourists money. The site has drawn more than half a million visitors since it opened in 2006.

One person not taking this lightly is Graham Jones, who currently runs the Doctor Who display at Cardiff:

"If you want to see wee kids crying then you ought to come  down to the Red Dragon this Easter because they will come  down here to an empty shell."

Graham is aghast at the BBC's decision to close the centre during one of its busiest periods:

"We thought that they would  have respect and regard for their fans…It does seem that this decision  has been made in a way that is  not very compassionate towards Cardiff."

A BBC Worldwide spokesman said:

"We announced the consolidation of our three main  Doctor Who exhibitions in the  UK last September, including  plans to close the Cardiff attraction this coming weekend.

We're delighted that our relationship with the home of the  show will continue as we plan  to bring the Doctor Who Experience to Cardiff in 2012 at a  new site."

What do you think of the closure? Did anyone have plans to go to the Cardiff Bay Exhibition over Easter?

Episode 2: Day of the Moon for Easter Sunday?

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:18 PM PDT

Since the announcement by BBC America that Doctor Who would premier in the USA on the 23rd April, speculation has been rife within UK fandom as to when The Impossible Astronaut would premier on BBC1. This is widely expected to be broadcast on the same date as the States, based upon the 'traditional' Saturday evening series start to Doctor Who seen to date.

Being this is the first time the series is to commence with a two-part story, the second episode Day of the Moon has also been subject to intense speculation as to whether it too would be shown over the Easter period. An intriguing piece of information has emerged via the CV of actor John Mash; as well as being cited as playing a character called Grant in the episode, the CV also includes an entry that states that episode two will be broadcast on 24th April.

This entry certainly lends credence to the suggestions that both parts would be shown over Easter!

However, at this time the BBC have only confirmed via the end of the Red Nose Day special that The Impossible Astronaut will see its premier on BBC1(HD) over Easter 2011.

Schedules are generally not 'locked' until around a fortnight before broadcast, so any information published via the Internet prior to then may not accurately reflect how the show will eventually be broadcast.
