| Posted: 27 Mar 2011 08:15 AM PDT There seems to be a lot of Doctor Who t-shirts around these days, and even more 24 hour t-shirt offers – a few weeks ago you could purchase an "Amy, Doctor and the Crack" vest, and now it is time for one enterprising online retailer to sell something a little more stunning… Available as the t-shirt deal of the day at RIPT Apparel is this Doctor Who-inspired shirt with a stony stare! Called "Weeping Angel Part 2″, the tee is by an artist with the superb name of The Other Mike and it went on sale today, Sunday, March 27, 2011, at midnight CST. The shirt is available for just 24 hours and as it has already been on sale for several hours, you will be unable to buy one on that site again (if indeed, anywhere, ever!) Based on the 2007 Doctor Who episode Blink and no doubt inspired by 2010′s The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone these t-shirts are available in men's and women's sizes for $10 each in black, while kids sizes are unusually more expensive at $15 and onesies for babies are a massive $18. Meanwhile the hoodie version is a more obvious $38 – and every single one available is in black! | ||

Monsters Who Came Back for More!Featuring Nick Briggs and DWM's Peter Ware, this is a light hearted look at many of Doctor Who's returning foes over the course of its history. | Posted: 27 Mar 2011 04:08 AM PDT Radio Free Skaro is always essential podcast listening for the Doctor Who fan but for Canadian fans this week's episode in particular is essential listening. There's a great interview with Mark Askwith at Space where he talks about Space and the scheduling of the series. Mike Doran gives some great personal perspective and talks about organizing Who Party conventions and there's an interview with some guy named Graeme Burk about the history of Doctor Who in Canada. Not sure who he is… (OK, it's me. If I made any mistakes blame it on the fact that I was up until the wee small hours the night before). Well worth your attention, even if you aren't Canadian! | ||
| Posted: 27 Mar 2011 03:07 AM PDT Big Finish have announced that the forthcoming series of Doctor Who audios starring Tom Baker are now available to pre-order! As reported several weeks ago, Tom Baker is making the move from BBC Audio to Big Finish where the Fourth Doctor will finally return for full-length, full-cast audio dramas typical of those produced by the company over the past 10 years or so. These will be more straightforward adventures rather than the wonderfully idiosyncratic Hornet's Nest and Demon Quest series by Paul Magrs. The first series will be released in January 2012, and are likely to be a massive event in the Doctor Who calendar! Co-starring Louise Jameson (Leela) for the first seasons and Mary Tamm (Romana I) for the second, Jameson also appears in the Lost Stories. The first series can be pre-ordered for just £50.00, while the second (release date TBA) is available at £55.00. Meanwhile the Lost Stories boxset will be available for £45.00, while an all-in-one package featuring both new series and the Lost Stories can be purchased in advance for £135.00. These special pre-order prices will be valid until July 31st, 2011, so get in early! | ||
| Posted: 27 Mar 2011 12:54 AM PDT Since its opening in December 2005, the Up Close Exhibition based in Cardiff Bay's Red Dragon Centre has provided a focal point for Doctor Who fans visiting the spiritual home of the 21st Century series, and also a popular venue for the public visiting Cardiff Bay, with some half-million visitors over its five years. However, today sees the exhibition close for the final time, as preparations begin for a new permanent home for the Doctor Who Experience, due to move to Cardiff in 2012 once the current operation at Olympia in London finishes. The exhibition's manager, Graham Jones, had been campaigning to keep it open, and believes that the closure today is ill-timed; speaking to the South Wales Echo, he said: It is damaging to the economy of Wales and the economy of Cardiff. We thought that (BBC Worldwide) would have respect and regard for their fans. It does seem that this decision has been made in a way that is not very compassionate towards Cardiff. f you want to see wee kids crying then you ought to come down to the Red Dragon this Easter because they will come down here to an empty shell. BBC Worldwide, however, have great expectations for the Doctor Who Experience's arrival next year: We have consulted with the city council for the past two years regarding our plans and we are confident that the attraction's features, size and location will draw many more fans to the Welsh capital from across the UK. The closure follows that of the Land's End Exhibition at the beginning of the year. The Doctor Who Experience officially opened in London last month. | ||

| Posted: 26 Mar 2011 10:36 PM PDT At the beginning of Prisoner of the Sun we find the Doctor already knee deep into one of his adventures. And what a satisfying change that is. Once in a while, we'll be introduced to the Doctor midway through events of a story and it's nice to play catch up. School Reunion does it, Partners in Crime as well and to an extent even The Seeds of Doom enjoys a scene where the Doctor has already been called on to investigate and we don't have to endure a tedious set up scene. This is part of the reason why you'll enjoy Prisoner of the Sun so much; it's fast-paced and throws you straight into the story juxtaposing the fact that at its core, it's a quite touching drama. The Doctor has got himself involved in the middle of some galaxy spanning trouble all of which has resulted in him needing to maintain a very unstable sun from collapsing otherwise it will kill billions. The lonely Doctor does this from a high tech complex located within the heart of the star, watched over (and more or less held prisoner) by the unscrupulous liquid guards The Mercurial's. Hence the title of the play. It's certainly a bit of a gamble for Big Finish to put this somewhat slow paced piece in-between an Ice Warrior two parter and the season finale featuring the Daleks, both of which seem to be filled with action galore. But if you relax and listen carefully you're going to be rewarded well because Prisoner of the Sun is a melancholy break for the Eighth Doctor before things take a turn for the worse. It's a credit to writer Eddie Robson that he captures this particular Doctor's vulnerability and innocence so well. Only with this incarnation can you imagine that he really would sacrifice six years of his life to maintain a computer system on his own, something that Doctor number eight does without hesitating. His relationship with his android helper Daphne is rather sweet as he teaches her day to day operations whilst trying to stave off his loneliness by programming her to have familiar personality traights. Nothing lasts forever in the Doctor's world however and it's not long before rebels arrive to take him away from his duties for their own gains. This is where the story enters it's deepest faze as the Doctor tries to reason with the moralities of the people surrounding him. His dilemma is simple: he would love to leave but the sacrifice he would make, that of billions, is too great. For this Doctor even one life is worth being stuck in his molten cage. We're taken on quite an emotional ride through this adventure and McGann's performance reflects this excellently. His Doctor is often melancholy, his purring tones reflect a sadness that is played out well here. His counterparts all react perfectly with his character, trying to take advantage of someone they believe to be a walkover but is in fact fully in control of the situation the whole time. Take your time with this play; it deserves your full attention. And before you ask, Antony Costa from boy band Blue isn't too bad at all. | Posted: 26 Mar 2011 08:00 PM PDT Hmm… the headline should actually read "The Boot Gets Doctor Who," but we figured, in this case, putting the words in the wrong order might grab your attention! As we reported back in January, the Great Cowboy Footwear of the Sea, otherwise known as Italy, has been given a special treat this year. Thanks to a broadcast with a night-to-night television schedule similar to what we all experienced with Torchwood: Children of Earth, but on a much larger and more awesome scale, Italians tuned into Rai 4 have been able to watch Doctor Who nearly every day, from Rose to A Christmas Carol! We're bragging a bit, but we think it's safe to say that we covered France's experience of Series 5 fairly thoroughly, and it's only fair that we do the same for Italy! So, without further ado, the report: Matt Smith's Doctor came hopping out of a sideways TARDIS that translated all his speech into Italian for any Rai 4 viewers who might happen to be listening in The Eleventh Hour on Friday, and just this weekend he and Amy fell into the mouth of a space whale who seemed to mistake them for cuisine from Olive Garden in The Beast Below. Whovians from Italy sadly won't get anything new today, but from today through next Saturday (except for the Sunday in the middle) the remainder of Series 5 and A Christmas Carol will pan out on Mediterranean screens, concluding on April 9th. A particular must-see if you're from the nation in question is Episode 6, The Vampires of Venice, on Thursday March 31st – though it wasn't filmed in Venice, or even Italy that matter, it's still a sort-of recognition of your home base! Rai 4 plans to remain tight-lipped about the ratings this extensive Who run has achieved until after it's finished, but the channel has mentioned a 1% audience share, which is apparently better than what all the other shows on the two-year-old network are getting. For a complete list of Doctor Who Series 5 broadcast dates in Italy, visit Doctor-Who.it (assuming you can understand the language)! (Grazie, Francesco!) | ||
