| “Shocking Twists” in Day of the Moon! Posted: 27 Apr 2011 06:20 AM PDT Some people in the world have seen Day of the Moon already – and as a result they're able to taunt us with "spoiler-free" teasers from the conclusion to The Impossible Astronaut. One major culprit is Digital Spy, who with their clever list of ten teasers tell us so much, but leave us knowing so little. We've had a browse through some of their hints and made a few suggestions as to what this might all mean… "You're building me the perfect ****** and it still won't be enough!" Could this be a TARDIS? As we've already seen in The Impossible Astronaut, the apparent TARDIS from The Lodger is present in this story… so just what are The Silence up to? The TARDIS swimming pool plays a vital role in a daring escape attempt. Could the Doctor's "draw them into the TARDIS" ploy from The Invasion of Time be called upon to defeat the Silence? Will we finally see the interior of the new machine beyond the control room? At least one of the shocking twists from last week's episode is called into question, but who can the Doctor really trust? This could be Amy's pregnancy or the Doctor's apparent death. Who can the Doctor trust? Probably himself… The Doctor has a new experience, while River does something for the very last time. Our thoughts on this one are a little vague; it might be the last time River sees the Eleventh Doctor, for instance, before travelling to The Library… The final scene contains an absolutely shocking twist. Does this mean that the serial is the beginning of a massive series arc? Or perhaps the end of one…? As always, these types of hint ask more questions than they answer. All of our responses are nothing more than speculation, so if you have any thoughts of your own, let us know in the comments below! | ||

| Posted: 27 Apr 2011 04:47 AM PDT Another year, another series, another round of apocalyptic naysayers crying the imminent end of Doctor Who. It's business as usual in 2011. Christian already told you about Chicago Now's Matthew Milam earlier this week, who essentially called for the permanent end to the TV series just because he doesn't like it as much as he used to. But now another bonkers American (I feel no shame in saying that, being one myself) – Kate Kotler of Bleeding Cool – has jumped on the demise-of-Who bandwagon. While admitting the most recent episodes have been top-notch, she argues that the BBC's attempt to broaden the appeal of the show will gradually begin to make it substandard, until it eventually falls off the airwaves altogether from the same lack of love that killed the show in the late 80s…
She may or may not have meant it this way, but I read that as, "I think Doctor Who's in good hands, except I don't." To back up her point, Kotler uses the new Amy-narrated intro to The Impossible Astronaut that appears in between the pre-credits teaser and the title sequence (which you apparently won't have seen if you watched the episode in the UK).
Okay… but I still don't see what's wrong with that. "Flashier and bangier" effects aren't a problem at all when the story's good like it's proving to be so far; it's when they're the story's crutch that they become an issue, which arguably hasn't happened since Matt Smith started Doctorin' the TARDIS. And in the UK, Doctor Who already does appeal to non sci-fi fans, and many of the women who almost dropped out post-Tennant gave Smith a chance and loved him. But that's beside the point. What's the beef with making Doctor Who more accessible? It's not like it hasn't happened before. Russell T. Davies was responsible for the show's "Ultimate Regeneration" (to steal the title of the Kasterborous book) that turned the show from a cult classic to a popular phenomenon. Some fans, myself included, owe their absolute obsession with the Doctor Who as a whole to the new-series' successful audience-boosting attempts. And has the story quality suffered, barring much of Series Two? Go re-watch The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways, Blink, Midnight, The Waters of Mars, A Christmas Carol, and basically all the other episodes made since 2005 and tell me they're not still ridiculously superb entertainment. Don't listen to all the wolf-criers; Doctor Who is a strong as ever! | ||

| Posted: 27 Apr 2011 04:01 AM PDT Once upon a space, the Doctor, Amy, Rory, and River took command of a Judoon army and sent them to Bo Go Mo the Flo So Jo out of a brigade of Smilers. Unfortunately, the rhinos were gradually deleted by Cybermen before the Doctor was cornered and trampled on by a pair of Pandoricas, causing the premature end of the universe. Sound like a ridiculous game of chess? It is. The Doctor Who chess set, so brand-spanking new it's not even out yet, features the blue King Doctor and Queen Amy, along with Bishop River, Knight Rory, Rook TARDIS, and Pawn Judoon up against an army of black Series 5 villains, who aren't easy to make out in the only image currently available, but it looks like the pawns are Smilers, the queen's a Weeping Angel, the knights are Cybermen, and the rooks are Pandoricas. If anyone can make out the king (a Dalek, possibly?) and the Bishops, we'd be much obliged. The battle takes place across a Pandorica-faced board with handy camps for captive pieces on either side emblazoned with the Doctor Who logo. Long-time Whovians may recall that this isn't the first Doctor Who chess-related merchandise to hit the market; back in the '90s a pewter collector's set was released with 66 interchangeable pieces (about half of which are quite hard to come by) including all eight classic Doctors as options for Kings, as well as the Master, the companions, and Dalek and K-9 pawns. It came with a carefully-crafted board and, if you were especially With all the rare parts included, the pewter set is worth £2,995; a slightly higher price than the Series 5 set's retail value of £29.99. If you'd prefer to have prisms with the characters' faces in them for pieces rather than actual miniature statues, or if you just don't want to pay 100 times as much money for said figures, pre-order the newer set. | ||

| The Doctor's Wife: ‘Mad' and ‘Magical' Posted: 26 Apr 2011 07:00 PM PDT You know when someone who gave Fez Emporiums the length and breath of my imagination a second boon describes a fellow writer's episode as 'mad' it must genuinelybe crazier than an armadillos armchair- but that's how Steven Moffat has described The Doctor's Wife, the upcoming episode by fantasy and sci-fi author and screenwriter Neil Gaiman (Coraline, American Gods) Chatting away to Entertainment Weekly, the man who killed the Doctor (The Impossible Astronaut) raised fanboys blood pressure with a few teasing details about Gaiman's effort, which guest-stars Suranne Jones as "Idris"…
Although it would appear, even with a writer of Gaiman's quality, that working on Doctor Who may have flexed creative muscles that no other project could tweak. It may be hard to imagine Gaiman struggling (well perhaps in a Poe sense of the word, quaffing blood-red wine, lamenting, scowling at the moon, possibly while wearing a gentleman's waistcoat) but Moffat, unsurprisingly, said:
It might seem odd to get excited about someone struggling (there are websites for that) but can you imagine what that mind could do when forced to escape a creative bear trap? (via Digital Spy) |
