| Posted: 28 Apr 2011 08:47 AM PDT That's right: everyone's favourite singing man-servants are back to soothsay and do that glowy eye thing for Neil Gaiman's hotly anticipated episode The Doctor's Wife – and the storyteller extraordinaire has been speaking to SFX about them, budgets and just what is lost inside the TARDIS. Giving us a sneak peak of whats in store in SFX #209 (on sale next week) the bods behind those precious words have given us a sample of Gaiman chatting about the constraints of television budgets. And it appears the old adage that limitations breed creativity:
This being Neil Gaiman though they won't be the same, no they'll be slightly (snigger!) Ood!

| Posted: 28 Apr 2011 07:15 AM PDT Miracle Day is coming. This year sees the return of Torchwood after a two year absence and things are looking good. Movie-like posters have been released by the BBC and Starz and they make the show look more epic than ever. But now we start getting to the real meat, if you will as the two channels start to launch the very enigmatic trailers that they have prepared for all you Torchwood fans out there. Nothing is spoilt by watching this and absolutely nothing is given away. In fact, not a single member of the cast is shown and neither is a single piece of footage from the upcoming drama. But that's exactly what you want, to have your appetite whetted and your anticipation built up. The teaser trailer itself has a voiceover of various news channels reporting the phenomenon that is "Miracle Day" in which none of the population of Earth dies for the entire day. And then the next and then the next… It's a great concept which raises the terrifying point: If no one were to die, just how overcrowded would the Earth become and just how quickly? We're about to find out this year as John Barrowman, Eve Myles and a star-studded supporting cast show us just how high the stakes are about to get for not only team Torchwood but also for the entire planet! Torchwood: Miracle Day will be airing in the middle of this year on BBC One in the UK and the Starz channel in the US. | ||
| The Master Will See You Now… Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:32 AM PDT John Simm made an appearance on The One Show this week, where he revealed that he would "certainly consider" returning as the Master in Doctor Who. Simm was last seen in The End of Time Part Two, where he sent Rassilon and the Time Lords back into the time-locked Time War where they rightly belonged. But what became of the Master after that? Well, in all honesty no one knows. The Master has always found a way back into the Doctor's life, evading a natural death in The Deadly Assassin and The Keeper of Traken, inexplicably evading his crispy doom in Planet of Fire and even evading total extermination by the Daleks on Skaro in the TV Movie. So logically it would not be that hard to bring him back to menace the eleventh Doctor and his friends. Simm revealed that:
Now, if there's talking about it, it looks like it may be all the more likely. Matt Smith revealed that he would like a rematch against the Master and it's definitely something that Steven Moffat could write a beast of a script for. But the real question is how much more of the Simm model do we want to see? Certainly his portrayal of the psychotic Time Lord was fantastic but it was paired evenly with David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. So is it now naturally time for the Simm model to regenerate into a Master that reflects Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor? We'll just have to wait and see…. | ||
| The Curse of the Black Spot prequel teaser online Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:29 AM PDT The official site will be revealing the prequel to Episode 3, The Curse of the Black Spot, after Day of the Moon on Saturday, and you can watch a teaser of it below! | Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:59 AM PDT This just in from BBC America – Inside Doctor Who clip number five! Entitled "On the Set," this latest installment in BBC America's series of Doctor Who behind-the-scenes promotional segments depicts Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill having the time of their lives doing anything in front of the camera except actually filming their scenes, with commentary from producers Beth Willis, Piers Wenger, Steven Moffat, Marcus Wilson, and others. Judging from the set's hotel-like corridors, there's a very high probability that the majority of the video below was recorded during production of Toby Whithouse's episode The God Complex, which we won't be seeing until autumn. Frankly we can't help but notice that Karen Gillan, like David Tennant before her, is a Scot who can pull off a fairly decent English accent, but not such a fantastic American one. No harm done though, because like fangirls watching the Tenth Doctor, the male Kasterborites among us still can't get enough of her! Doctor Who will be back again in TWO DAYS (Saturday) at 6PM on BBC One, 9/8 central on BBC America, and 8/7 central on Space! | ||

| 6.2: Day of the Moon - DWO Spoiler Free Preview Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:33 AM PDT DWO have seen 6.2: Day of the Moon and have put our spoiler-free preview together: It's been 7 days and the nail biting can finally end as the resolution to last week's cliffhanger is finally here… 6.2: Day of the Moon, doesn't immediately pick up from where last week left off, however. The final moments of the previous story are revisited in a fragmented form which feels more like a stylistic resolution than what we have come to accept from traditional cliffhangers. We're also treated to one of the longest pre-title sequences in the show's history - over 6 and a half minutes in total! As with our previous preview, it's an incredibly difficult episode to describe without giving too much away, but we can tell you that it's set 3 months after the events in The Impossible Astronaut, there's another prison with The Doctor's name on it and there are more shocks here than the previous episode. Day of the Moon actually feels a little more complex than The Impossible Astronaut, even with a couple of answers to some niggling questions (no, not THAT question…yet) - your brain will literally hurt after the 45 minutes are up. Moffat displays once more just how talented he is on every level, delivering a story that takes the show to new exciting levels and possibilities. But the cherry on this proverbial cake of an episode comes in the final minute - in a scene that will have you screaming through your television set in a way that makes Maureen Lipman's portrayal of 'The Wire' look diluted. May the nail biting begin…AGAIN! Five things to look out for... 1) Rory's addiction to a little red light. 2) A certain picture in a frame. 3) 2 body bags filled with people The Doctor cares about. 4) River makes a splash! 5) Video Phone. | Posted: 27 Apr 2011 10:58 PM PDT Time travel is an unbalanced and, some would say, unfair proposal. As we saw Saturday when out of the great blue came a homicidal astronaut to blast our hero to death mid-regeneration: was he invited? Did the Doctor know he would be there? Had the Doctor been there before and now knew what was to come? Taking the fun out of everything, Physics would decry this as stomping merrily over the consistent histories approach, where even in a universe that allowed time travel you still have to abide by the laws of physics. This is mostly a concession to free will: how exactly could the 1103 year-old Doctor interfere with his own time line, while remembering what had happened, and thus not be able to break with events that he had already seen? Breaking it down further, it means Baby Hitler won't be smothered in his cot and your Great, Great Granddad will be spared a nihilistic death by 'curiosity'. Of course, the caveat here is that this is human free will, not Time Lord free will… well that and "it's a TV show!". There consistent history seems a little vague. The Time Wars are a no-no for meddling but then again so was Pompeii. So what is Space: 1969? An ancillary event to the fixed point of the Doctor's Death? A warning from a dead man to his younger self to see what is happening around him, to stop The Silence from doing whatever evil they have planned? And just who gave him that slender warning, one that he knew the TARDIS couldn't resist? Let's back up a bit. Amy Pond is certainly a free spirit as your granddad or Jerry Garcia might call her. While questioning why the Doctor would recruit himself her first reaction is, he wants to save himself. Amy imposing her free will on the Doctor (though free will is just a fancy way of saying 'those humans… they'll do anything!') A Time Lord, despite the ponderous piety, is a noble creature. We've seen the lengths the Doctor will go to, to save our humble blue planet. So, being that he knows how Amy is going to re-act and his own apparent apathy over saving us once again ("Humans, I thought I'd never tire of saving you") what are the Doctor's motivations for sending his younger self back? Did he even do it? But then again who else has the power to unite all of the Doctors friends and himself together…could it have something to do with The Silence's TARDIS – last seen squatting on the roof of Craig's house in The Lodger? Does he want to save himself? Avenge himself or simply correct the mistake of an old man who missed what was right in front of him? Does this mean the man regularly seen wearing outdated headgear is in fact vain or like Time Crash he knew to send himself back because he remembers himself being around Washington in 1969? |
