Revisitations 2 – Discs 5-6: Resurrection of The Daleks

Posted: 06 May 2011 07:59 AM PDT

After the triumph of Revisitations Set 1 comes the eagerly anticipated second volume, this time around containing the Patrick Troughton escapade The Seeds Of Death, the Jon Pertwee romp Carnival Of Monsters and Peter Davison's dark adventure Resurrection Of The Daleks.

To give the set the coverage it deserves this review has been split into three parts. As I've said, the final adventure in this set is Resurrection Of The Daleks, one of Peter Davison's darkest stories but has time retained its impact?

Doctor Who - Resurrection of the DaleksThe Doctor and his companions are captured in a Time Corridor and are forced to land on 20th Century Earth, diverted by the Doctor's oldest enemy – the Daleks. It is here the true purpose of the Time Corridor becomes apparent: after 90 years of imprisonment, Davros, the ruthless creator of the Daleks, is to be liberated to assist in the resurrection of his army. But not even the Daleks forsee the poisonous threat presented by their creator. Indeed, who would suspect Davros of wanting to destroy his own Daleks – and why?

Dark, sinister and a tad creepy, this was one of Davison's most memorable adventures, not because of the Daleks, but because the story is genuinely disturbing. It also marks the end of Tegan's tenure in the TARDIS. No long farewells here, she leaves not as you'd expect all shouty but with an emotional turn that Janet Fielding was so rarely given. Terry Molloy does the impossible and almost out does Michael Wisher with his take on Davros. Davros was a great baddie but like most became overused so enjoy him at his most evil. But the show belongs to Maurice Colbourne as Lytton the blood thirsty mercenary. He gives this two dimensional baddie an unflinching, dark soul and is as enigmatic as you'd want a bad guy to be. The casting of Rodney Bewes as Stein raised a few eyebrows when first announced and you can see why here. Bewes is a great comedy performer but lacks the menace the part deserves and sometimes the more dramatic scenes lack power because of this. It also has some laughable costume designs, the Dalek helmets are just awful.

Eric Saward's script is energetic with some nice action sequences to keep the story moving along nicely. It's helped along with some strong direction from Matthew Robinson and it made sense to learn that he also directed the Colin Baker story Attack Of The Cybermen.

Extras Disc 5

Transmission Episodes – Presented for the first time with its original mono soundtrack, this is the two-part edition of the story. It really does work in this format, probably more now than before because we're used to the 45 minute format. The addition of an optional Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is a nice touch but it's a bit on the weak side and could have done with a tad more bass.

Commentary - Terry Molloy, Eric Saward and Peter Wragg all join in for a gag track that's moderated by Nick Pegg.

Casting Far And Wide – Toby Hadoke interviews Roger Davenport, Del Henney, Leslie Grantham, Jim Findlay and William Sleigh about their acting experiences on the story. A nice piece that allows these fellows to quickly reminisce about this adventure but it a shame that it suffers from lack of time as each piece is a bit rushed.

On Location – Good old JN-T is here alongside Matthew Robinson and Eric Saward reminiscing in London's Shad Thames where some of the story was shot. It's nice to see JN-T again, shame he never got the chance to really make his mark with the BBC DVD releases.

Extended And Deleted Scenes – Here be extra material culled from early edits of the episodes. Some are time coded and a tad rough but it's good to see what was chopped and cropped.

Breakfast Time – Ahh, BBC Breakfast Time, a cosy and warm magazine show that had uncle Frank Bough and big sister Selina Scott at the helm. Anyway, Janet Fielding and JN-T are on hand to be interviewed by Guy Michelmore and Sally Magnusson about JN-T's Companions book. Also Malcolm Clarke and Brian Hodgson chat about the music and sound effects.

Trailer - Taken from the original transmission this is a very posh promo for the serial.

The Last Dalek – This is a behind the scenes look at the Ealing studios filming for 1967′s epic Dalek story, The Evil Of The Daleks. Made possible by the 8mm film shot by BBC designer Tony Cornell its an engrossing piece of black and white footage. Visual effects designers Michaeljohn Harris and Peter Day provide an enlightening commentary.

Doctor Who Revisitations 2 DVD boxsetTARDIS Cam No 4 – Another vignette from the old BBCi website which will be viewed once and once only.

Isolated Music – The option to view whilst listening to the score only.

PDF Material – Pop the disc into the CD-ROM of your PC or MAC and read the original Radio Times listings.

Extras Disc 6

Commentary - Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and director Matthew Robinson chat merrily about the making of this story even if they do suffer a slight technical malfunction!

Come In Number Five – David Tennant presents this affectionate look at Peter Davison's tenure as the Doctor. This is the extra most will turn to first and they won't be disappointed. Jam-packed with anecdotes and comment I'd like to see a documentary in this style for each Doctor.

Tomorrow's Times – The "What The Papers Say" sort of feature which looks at the newspaper stories that crept up during the Fifth Doctor's era. Fan favourite Frazer Hines presents and proves himself to be a natural presenter.

Walrus - A Welsh woman comes face to face with a Dalek who is determined to make her speak monotone! Yep, you read that correctly, this bizarre extra (and a round of applause for the researchers here) is one of those gems that this range always lavishes the purchaser with.

Photo Gallery – A collection of production snaps culled from the archives.

Subtitled Production Notes – Wohoo, love these pieces of textual information, well worth viewing.

Coming Soon – That Planet Of The Spiders trailer which is a beauty.

Dark and sinister this is a cracking adventure with the cast and crew firing on all cylinders. Revisitations 2 is another solid set from the BBC and puts many movie releases to shame with its quantity and quality of extras.

The Revisitations 2 boxset has an RRP of £39.99, but you can still order now from Amazon for just £29.93!

Pirates You Didn't See Coming

Posted: 06 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

Yes, Doctor Who is going to have pirates this weekend, and yeah, Hugh Bonneville and Lily Cole are in it, and sure, it'll be on at 6:15 pm on BBC One this Saturday, blah blah blah.

We've all heard it a dozen times, and while no doubt all of us are looking forward to seeing what The Curse of the Black Spot has to offer, the fact that it'll be broadcast is hardly news anymore.

What is news is the fact that another cracking pirate story is in the works outside the realms of our favourite show, where in another dimension, another Doctor teams up with another pirate captain whose actor's name is Hugh to sail the high seas and play with swords 'n' stuff.

Just from the knowledge we're going to give you in this sentence that The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists, a.k.a. thickhead-friendly US title The Pirates! Band of Misfits, is a creation of Aardman Animation (Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run), you should be able to figure out that this upcoming film adaptation of Gideon Defoe's book will be stop-motion-animation.  But that's not the aforementioned "other dimension."  We bet you'll never guess that this film will be in 3D!  Why?  Because no massively-released stop-motion feature film has ever been 3D before.  Well, okay, there was Neil Gaiman's Coraline.  But Aardman still haven't given the gimmick art form of depth a shot… until now.

It's just occurred to us that we've yet to give you any substantial Doctor-Who-related information in this article, so it's probably worth mentioning at this point that David Tennant will be in it.  His character, a "haplessly smitten young scientist," will be teaming up with a pirate crew including Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit) and Russell Tovey (Voyage of the Damned, The End of Time, Being Human) with lead actor Hugh Grant "in his first animated role" as the captain.  The rest of the cast includes BRIAN BLESSED! (Mindwarp), Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brendan Gleeson, and Ashley Jensen.

But back to David Tennant's character – haplessly smitten young scientist?  Sounds like the return of the Tenth Doctor to us!  Or maybe not.  Hey, a website can dream!

Doctor Who Dominates iPlayer

Posted: 06 May 2011 03:09 AM PDT

Trouncing Royal Weddings and topping its own records, Doctor Who is absolutely dominating the BBC iPlayer service.

Kate & Wills' nuptials  received a right royal bashing from Doctor Who. The ceremony was beaten in iPlayer downloads by Day of the Moon which has been viewed 1.07 million times in the four days it has been available compared to the 0.62 million times The Royal Wedding Service has been downloaded since Friday.

That's not the only good news. The Impossible Astronaut could very well over take The Eleventh Hour as the most downloaded programme ever!

The series opener has already accessed over 1.2 million times in the 12 days since its transmission, nearly three times higher than any other programme available over the same period. During the first week the show has been accessed 1.38 million times compared to The Eleventh Hour's haul of 1.27 million during the same period.

6.3: The Curse of the Black Spot - DWO Spoiler Free Preview

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:26 PM PDT

Any episode following on from the series 6 two-part opener would have a tough job on its hands, but Stephen Thompson's The Curse of the Black Spot, has delivered a mighty fine story that will unreservedly and undeniably buckle your swash.

The adventure begins on board a 17th-Century pirate ship that has been stranded for over a week. Members of the crew are falling prey to a curse of a black spot on their hands, which promptly summons a beautiful but deadly siren, played by Lily Cole.

The TARDIS team appear to be stowaways on board the ship - a situation that Captain Avery (Hugh Bonneville), doesn't take too kindly to. After a few scuffles and a re-pegging of authority, the hunt begins for a cause, and indeed a cure for the curse.

It all feels very classic who, but yet unmistakably new who too, and a little bit Moffat-y in places also, but one of the biggest winning elements here is the wonderful atmosphere that the story and indeed the set, paints.

It's also good to see Rory being used more this season, and we certainly get to see some different sides to him in this adventure.

Expect some shocks and a couple more signature plot twists that Doctor Who is becoming famous for, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable 45 minutes, made more enjoyable by the fantastic guest cast.

If there is anything negative that could be said about the story, it would be the final scene, which, without giving too much away, feels all too similar to the penultimate scene from 6.2: Day of the Moon.

Rating: 8/10

< /strong>

Five things to look out for...

1) The tiniest scratch could mean death.

2) The brief return of the mysterious eye patch lady.

3) Shiny treasure isn't always rewarding.

4) I'm a _____. I can teach you how to save me!

5) Positive / Negative?

Time Shift for Gaiman's Episode!

Posted: 05 May 2011 08:55 PM PDT

The BBC have confirmed a schedule change for Doctor Who in light of poor overall Saturday evening audience figures in which the show has been an unfortunate tent pole for lower performing atrocities.

Depending on how you might feel about the 6pm air time, you might see this news as the BBC admitting that the new time might be a reaction against blows from ratings nerds and scar(y)mongering Mail articles. However this really shoudl be seen as a show of faith.

From Neil Gaimans' , The Doctor's Wife, the series moves forward to 6:30 pm, switching places with the insipid So You Think You Can Dance Live and sparing UK audience from catching the end of the mind bogglingly awful Don't Scare the Hare (where was the Daily Mail article on that?) which has been cast to the Pre-Evening News Slot of the Damned.

Unsurprisingly the move is seen as a vote of confidence in the show which is the only programme in the Saturday Night Lineup to have achieved strong ratings: The Impossible Astronaut took a 43.3% share of the overall telly viewing public while Day of the Moon took an equally impressive  30.5%.

In an exclusive chat to Digital Spy Dan McGolpin, Head of Planning and Scheduling for BBC One, planned and scheduled this:

"Like last year, this series of Doctor Who is scheduled at start times between 6pm and 7pm on a Saturday night, where it attracts a very strong audience including a large proportion of younger viewers.

Very few drama series on any of the UK's channels achieve audience volumes of this size."

Doctor Who continues with The Curse of the Black Spot Saturday at 18:15 on BBC 1.

Arthur Darvill: from Doctor Who to Doctor Faustus

Posted: 05 May 2011 08:22 PM PDT

The Shakespeare's Globe have announced casting for their forthcoming play, Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus; the titular role will be played by Paul Hilton (whose television credits include Silk), with the evil spirit Mephistopheles that 'serves' him in the story to be played by Arthur Darvill - the actor is, of course, currently starring in Doctor Who as TARDIS traveller Rory Williams.

The press release reports:
Arthur Darvill, who is best known for his role as the Doctor's current companion Rory in BBC's Doctor Who, will play Mephistopheles in Shakespeare's Globe's first production of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. Paul Hilton, who was recently seen in the BBC drama Silk, will play the title role of the scholar who makes a pact with the devil in exchange for knowledge. The production will run from 18 June to 2 October and is directed by Matthew Dunster and designed by Paul Wills. They will both collaborate with Puppetry Director Steve Tiplady, former Artistic Director of Little Angel Theatre Company, to transform the Globe in to an arena of wild spectacle with larger than life puppets and illusion. Huge flying dragons and horned stilt walkers will help to bring this dark fantastical world to life.

Doctor Faustus is one of the greatest tragedies in English before Shakespeare, and is being staged for the first time at the current Globe. Restless for knowledge and power, Faustus forsakes scholarship and makes a pact with the Devil: In exchange for giving his soul to the Devil after death, the evil spirit Mephistopheles will serve him for 24 years, providing him with magic and knowledge beyond his wildest dreams.

Prequels and Body bags

There's something a'stiring in the murky waters. There be something out there taken men from the good ship Fancy. An accursed…oh forget it… I can't do it. I even tried to go method I'm writing this in the bath while wearing a tri-corner hat and I contracted scurvy and for what?

Well so that BBC America viewers could get a taste of the prequel to this weeks episode The Curse of the Black Spot.

Join Captain Avery (Hugh Bonneville) as he pens a warning for history! See the empty decks of the Fancy! Her what sounds like the soothing sounds of a siren call!

If that seems a little too spoilery then there's always a fluffy piece of nothing from the just released Doctor Who Insider episode 2 where Karen Gillan shares her insight into being shot and lying in a body bag. Apparently one's fun and the other isn't. Try to guess which one! I think you'll be pleasantly surprise…
