Merchandise is (Somewhat) Cool

Posted: 18 May 2011 06:40 AM PDT

We're only four episodes into Doctor Who Series 6 Season 32 and already merchandise relating to all three stories we've seen are up for sale!

From manufacturer Half Moon Bay and available through Forbidden Planet, a new range of Doctor Who merchandise including t-shirts, mugs, and folder bags has hit the market.  They're really rather simple concepts – each item just mentioned essentially has a picture of a character or characters from any of this season's already-broadcast adventures with a quote beneath relating to him/her/them.  For example, one of the folder bags and one of the mugs features a hexagonal image of Matt Smith's Doctor and Suranne Jones' Idris with the caption "You are my thief!  My beautiful thief, look at you!"

Here's the full range of t-shirts, shoulder bags, and mugs that have been created.  Note that several items have sold out, so if you want any of those you'll have to watch their respective spaces.  T-shirts are listed by colour.

The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon

The Curse of the Black Spot

  • Doctor – "Please ignore all my theories up to this point."  Bag; Mug
  • Amy – "What kind of rubbish pirates are you?"  Mug

The Doctor's Wife – Available Sunday, May 29th

  • Doctor & Idris – "You are my thief!  My beautiful thief, look at you!"  Bag; Mug
  • Nephew the Ood – "Nephew was broken when he came here…"  Bag; Mug
  • Uncle – "Sorry about the mad person, she was supposed to  be dead!"  Bag; Mug

Admittedly, this is all fairly default stuff.  Nothing too creative in terms of concept; you get what it says on the tin: picture + quote on gifty sort of item, the manufacturer's way of cashing in on Who fandom's most current vibe.  Many would likely be more inclined to spend their hard-earned money on the more unique Whovian gems like the Tom Baker/Peter Davison costume t-shirts, but if you're the sort who likes your stuff to sport the freshest Doctor Who one-liners available, and you don't mind paying £24.99 for the folder bags, £16.99 for the t-shirts, and £5.99 for the mugs, more power to ya.

Jack Gets His Doctor

Posted: 18 May 2011 06:29 AM PDT

We've been aware for a while now that Captain Jack Harkness, like many TARDIS companions before and after him, has a slight case of unrequited love for everyone's favourite time-travelling madman, but has never and more than likely will never have the Doctor all to himself.

While many a Davies fan yearning for another Time-Lord-and-human romance might be dismayed by this knowledge, we can all take comfort in the fact that Jack actor (Jacktor?) John Barrowman will be awarded a Doctor all to himself!

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama will present Barrowman with a Doctor of Drama at its graduation ceremony this summer.  So no, he still won't be getting a clever alien, but at least he's got a shiny new addition to his resume!  Receiving the same honour alongside John will be actor/writer/producer David MacLennan, while singers Moira Anderson and Judith Howarth will each be given a Doctor of Music.

We would just like to congratulate the oft-seen John Barrowman for this honour, and wish him well.

The July 5th ceremony comes three days before the July 8th American premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day on Starz.  The UK broadcast date on BBC One is still unconfirmed.

Only three more episodes of Doctor Who (not to mention a massive cliffhanger we'll have to recover from) to go before we're thrown into full-on Torchwood-Anticipation Mode.  Are you ready to be immortal?

Torchwood: Miracle Day - Production Roundup

Posted: 18 May 2011 01:55 AM PDT

Starz have issued a press release on the cast for Torchwood: Miracle Day; in addition to those reported previously like Wayne Knight, Ernie Hudson and Christopher Thomas Howell, and John DeLancie, a number of new names are also associated with the show:

Nana Visitor

Nana Visitor is perhaps best remembered for her role as Kira Nerys in Deep Space Nine, other notable television roles include Dr. Elizabeth Renfro in Dark Angel and Jean Ritter in Wildfire, plus several voices in the cartoon hit Family Guy.

Mare Winningham

Mare Winningham has had a prolific career in film and television, as well as beign a singer/songwriter. Notable films include St. Elmo's Fire, Turner and Hooch, Georgia and Brothers. Recurring television roles include Dr Amanda Lee in ER, Susan Grey in Grey's Anatomy, and Ida in this year's Mildred Pierce.

Frances Fisher

Another actress with a career spanning from the seventies, Frances Fisher has appeared in Titanic, Gone in 60 Seconds and The Lincoln Lawyer, with television roles such as Dr Liz Carter in Becker, Eva Thorne in A Town Called Eureka, and Rita in The Shield.

Principal Photography has now been completed for the show, with the cast and crew enjoying their wrap parties over the last couple of weeks as filming completed; post production is now in full swing to get the show ready for previews and the television broadcast from 8th July - this includes the soundtrack being composed by series veteran Murray Gold. Thus far there have only been a few teasers for the show on US and UK television, but this is expected to ramp up over the next couple of months as the series premiere approaches.

Details of production over the last few weeks became scarce as the crew buckled down to finish filming against their punishing schedule, though the occasional tidbit did make its way into the public eye, including traditional Torchwood high-rise stunts and big explosions!

One actor unmentioned above is David DeSantos, who plays a character named Agent Baylor in episode eight; he has had small roles in television shows like Numb3rs, CSI and House, and films like Delta Farce. During his week or so on production he kindly provided us with some glimpses of his co-stars on set:

Review: The TARDIS Mini-Set - Toy

Posted: 18 May 2011 01:20 AM PDT

Manufacturer: Character Building

RRP: &ound;9.99

Release Date: 13th May 2011

Reviewed by: Doctor Who Online

Review Posted: 18th May 2011

The third and final of the currently available Doctor Who Mini-Sets from Character Building that DWO is reviewing, is The TARDIS Mini-Set.

This is very different to the previous 2 Mini-Sets. For starters there is no base, which is a shame as it would be nice to add around the TARDIS with your own custom builds / snap in characters.

Unlike the Dalek Progenitor Room and The Time of Angels Mini-Sets, this isn't a set in the scenic representation sense of the word, but a 'what you see is what you get' construction.

Build time is between 10-15 minutes (depending on how good you are at applying stickers), and with just 53 pieces, is the smallest of the Mini-Sets - both in number and in physical size.

Whilst not as enjoyable to build as the other two sets, it's great to have your own representation of the TARDIS in this construction range - even if it is only three inches high.

The set is priced at just &ound;9.99 and includes two Micro-Figures of The Doctor and Amy Pond, which are also available in the blind bags currently available in the shops for &ound;1.99.

Big Reaction to The Doctor's Wife

Posted: 17 May 2011 10:24 PM PDT

We've had a few days to get our thoughts in order concerning the magic of The Doctor's Wife, and in that time Doctor Who seems to have attracted far more attention than normal.

Could it have been the script? The acting and direction?

Or could it have been the presence of one Neil Gaiman as scriptwriter?

Certainly Doctor Who Series 6 has been the subject of more online reviews than any other, which is why we've held off with our round up of reviews while we waited for them to be published.

Let's start at the top. If The Doctor's Wife had been a stage play, it would have had a cast reunion at the end to bow to the audience, who on their feet would be applauding and throwing flowers.

'The Doctor's Wife' is one of, if not the, best episode of Moffat and Smith's run up to this point The tone is fabulous, the writing is perfect, the acting is spectacular and the monster is every bit as threatening as he should be considering the stakes. As far as stand alone stories go, I predict this will be at or near the top of many Whovian's top lists for years to come.

Meanwhile Sam Morgan at Hollywood.com offers a lead-in to a review of the episode that I can completely sympathise with; I've still got the bruises…

Who has had a long history of attracting great British sci-fi writers (Douglas Adams to name the most well known) and I believe The Doctor's Wife can go right along there with Adams' City of Death. Had this not been written by Gaiman though, it would still be a classic. Personifying the TARDIS so the Doctor can finally speak to her? Absolutely brilliant.

That's the kind of idea you see and smack your head while repeatedly cursing to yourself "Why didn't I think of that? It's so simple and brilliant!" At least that's what I did and why Gaiman is married to a rock star chick.

One respected online review source is Crave Online who were right to heap praise on guest star Suranne Jones, in a remarkable turn from the actress who once brought us the terminally stroppy Karen McDonald in Coronation Street.

Of the guest stars, Suranne Jones was a knockout with her manic portrayal of Idris; who almost seemed like Helena Bonham Carter on acid. One of my qualms about River Song as the potential wife of the Doctor is that I don't think she's a good fit for his personality. The opposite is true for Idris as the TARDIS personified.

Everything seems to come together so perfectly in The Doctor's Wife; in terms of the regular cast it is of course Matt Smith who is rightly the star this time around, considers the popular TOR site.

…Matt Smith's heartrending performance of The Doctor meeting the love of his life for the first time was a perfect balance for hers… By the time he tearfully speaks to the TARDIS for the last time, I was crying buckets. That guy can act.

Now here's an interesting one. Viewers on BBC America are getting episodes of Doctor Who this year with an opening narration from Karen Gillan, in character as Amy Pond. Various people have criticised this over the last few weeks. MTV say you're wrong, however

…once again get Amy Pond's narration, which gives us the rundown of everything we need to know about Doctor Who. And it's come to my attention that some people don't like this. Some people: you are wrong. This season of Who, in particular, is not new viewer friendly, something that the past forty years have strived for. So any olive branch to a new viewer is important.

Doctor Who - The Doctor's WifeLast week we ran an article on the number of times Rory had been killed. It seems that tricking us into thinking that Mr Pond is dead is something that is just going to keep on happening. However, the moment which it occured was pretty disturbing for some viewers (this one included!), not least Pajiba's C Roberto Dmitri.

We were inflicted with Rory death fatigue for the second week in a row, but I did think the payoff of Amy's hallucination of his rotted corpse and walls scrawled with mad ramblings of how much he hated her was a creepy enough payoff to justify it.

Over at BlogCritics, Gaiman's punchy dialogue is the real winner. There were plenty of gems in the episode, none moreso than pretty much everything that Idris utters in her "all moments at once" manner.

Special mention, however, must go to the line: "Biting's excellent. It's like kissing, only there's a winner." Only a genius of Gaiman's calibre could've come up with that, and I was so enamoured with the line that I immediately texted it to my girlfriend with the thought that she might appreciate it. (She did.)

Local paper The Shropshire Star often features Doctor Who-related content; sometimes good, sometimes bad. While every other review we have featured here comes from the pen of a blogger with a name, it seems that in Shropshire it's not good form to share these details when you're slating the current run of Doctor Who

Fantastic stuff – clever, witty and enjoying playing with the idea of time and spacey wayceyness but without being smug or clever for cleverness's sake. Although it wasn't entirely perfect – the climax, where they finally defeated the mysterious House – was over a bit too quickly, but that's a small gripe.

Blimey. I'm actually really excited about next week's episode. And that can mean only one thing.

Yup. They're bound to cock it up again.

Pillock.

Speaking of which, Gavin Fuller managed to pay attention this week, which means the man who continues to dine out on his Mastermind success answering Doctor Who questions 20 years ago had something good to say. Naturally his early drafts will have had references to Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, not to mention Philip Hinchcliffe, but his editor sensibly edited those out. He still managed to be trivial, however…

Not since the beginning of the 1980s have people with a track record in the sci-fi/fantasy field got as far as having a story commissioned, and unlike Christopher Priest and Tanith Lee, Gaiman has seen his story come to fruition.

Doctor Who - The Doctor's WifeThe reviews just keep on coming, as you can see – The Doctor's Wife was hugely successful, a rare case of a much-anticipated TV event actually coming off. Den of Geek's Simon Brew was suitably excited:

Yet, the understandable and entirely correct excitement over Gaiman's maiden Doctor Who script (and please, if you're reading, Mr Gaiman: write another) shouldn't overshadow the many other things that went right here. Director Richard Clark had a massive task here, capturing an episode that was, by turns, emotional, sinister, scary and action-packed. He turned out to be absolutely the right choice, and – matched by some brilliant production design and effects work – he turned in a superbly shot piece of television.

IGN have also offered a review that praises Matt Smith's performance and Neil Gaiman's ability to add to the relationship between Rory and Amy.

Smith was given free reign to explore sides to his Doctor we haven't seen as yet (from vulnerable to bad-ass in one fell swoop) and – despite budgetary restraints restricting Rory and Amy's torturous Groundhog Day riff to the same bland corridor over and again – Gaiman managed to add subtle layers to their relationship in poignant style.

Curiously, Digital Spy (who otherwise enthuse about the episode) have this rather dull opinion of the defeat of House, one that kind of misses the point…

The means of defeating the seemingly-invulnerable House (an unrecognisable Michael Sheen) is also slightly disappointing, as the death of Idris's human body leads to a literal deus ex machina resolution.

How did they miss that the "literal deus ex machina resolution" is actually bloody clever? How often do we see a literal deus ex machina in modern fiction, as opposed to last minute, cack-handed attempts to screw the reader because the writer got it wrong earlier in the plot?

Doctor Who - The Doctor's WifeOver at SFX, the champions of British sci-fi and fantasy contrast the episode with The Curse of the Black Spot.

Considerably more rewarding in every respect than last week's pirate yarn, Neil Gaiman's first dip into the waters of Doctor Who does not disappoint. The Stardust and Coraline scribe has created a story that is enmeshed in the show's mythology but isn't self-indulgent or inaccessible to non-acolytes: that's thanks to a script that provides both an endless stream of brilliant dialogue and has a remarkable knack of following funny with emotional with scary with funny with emotional with scary – and so on.

The popularity of Neil Gaiman might not be the sort of thing to impress the man in the street – after all, he hasn't reached J.K. Rowling levels of success – but he is big enough to be a considerable catch for any TV show, in the way that perhaps getting Douglas Adams to write a script in the mid 1980s might have been. ScreenRant are certainly aware of this, and rightly use this fact to spread the word about Doctor Who.

If you're reading this, you are probably a fan of Doctor Who too. If you're not, I highly encourage you to start watching the show, because it really is something special. How many shows out there can land Neil Gaiman as a guest writer?

As you can see, respect for The Doctor's Wife is massive, and it genuinely feels like a modern day classic. I personally don't like to get over excited about things like this but I reckon Monsters and Critics have a point:

All in all this was one hell of an episode and I'd love to see Neil Gaiman write more Doctor Who. In fact I'd go as far as to say that this is a potential HUGO Winner.

So there you have it – The Doctor's Wife was as rare and unusual a treat in every way possible!

Torchwood: Web of Lies

Posted: 17 May 2011 07:26 PM PDT

Torchwood: Miracle Day writer Jane Espenson has confirmed via Twitter that there will be a web-based story to accompany the television series, Torchwood: Web of Lies. Alongside this, she also teased followers over potential casting for this addition to the show:

Jane Espenson: There is going to be Torchwood web content.
So in addition to #TorchwoodMiracleDay there is #TorchwoodWebOfLies
Enjoy all the TW brands!
Jane Espenson: We have faith in Torchwood: Web of Lies. #hint
Jane Espenson: It's tru; there's an echo of my past work in #Torchwood: Web of Lies.
(I know you already solved my little puzzle, but this is fun.)

The last two tweets have led to speculation over the identity of the who has been cast for the story, with actress Eliza Dushku being suggested - she has played roles in several series Espenson has written for in the past, including "Faith" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Tru" on Tru Calling and "Echo" on Dollhouse - further fueled by the actress herself retweeting a mention of the remarks via a tweet from Zap2It.

However, at present there have been no official confirmation of casting for Web of Lies, or whether the story will be available online worldwide or only in the United States.

Media Coverage includes: Zap2it; io9; Digital Spy.

A new teaser for Torchwood: Miracle Day from Starz has been released, which shows some new footage from the series:

The PodKast's Wife!

Posted: 17 May 2011 07:19 PM PDT

This week's podKast (with a "K") features Christian Cawley and James McLean (and improved sound quality!) discussing the wonderful episode The Doctor's Wife as only they can, as well as the recent Torchwood: Miracle Day teaser trailer and a couple of Dalek-related book releases!

There is little criticism that can be levelled at The Doctor's Wife, but Torchwood is a different matter, so fans of the first two series of the out-of-control alien-sh*gging drama should probably avoid this section.

However if you have £30 burning a hole in your pocket and like Daleks, The Dalek Handbook and The Man Who Invented the Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation are both featured this week.

Remember that there are other ways to listen to the Kasterborous podKast beyond the convenient player above;  you might use download link, pick it up in iTunes or subscribe to the RSS feed and use your preferred media player to download and sync our current run of increasingly popular podcasts.

Also don't forget that we will address any comments that you have and give you a mention, so feel free to leave your thoughts below!

The Time Monster Set

Posted: 17 May 2011 05:05 PM PDT

Doctor Who: The Time MonsterRecently there has been some concern that some of the Doctor Who action figure sets that have been released have been simple "re-hashing" of old sets. Reused Daleks and only ever so slightly changed incarnations of the Doctor that may not be worth shelling out extra amounts of money on, in some people's opinion.

However, the latest set to be released is something that certainly seems more than just a simple "re-branding and re-boxing". The Time Monster set sees a rather splendid casting of the Roger Delgado incarnation of the Master along with his TARDIS, disguised as a computer bank. Alongside these you also get little extras as well including the Master's Tissue Compression Eliminator, a Kronos Crystal fragment and a time sensor device that actually belongs to the Doctor.

Whereas before some of the sets released may have included figures that have been available, this set certainly provides something unique for the buyer.

This little item is available to pre-order now from Forbidden Planet's website and is priced at £19.99. Shipments will be heading out from 2nd June 2011.

As usual, you are under no obligation to go out and buy this set however it does have a wonderful sense of detail to it that should be carefully considered!
